Here's my 2 cents worth ... I have made 2 lists with items that are significantly cheaper (like 30-50%) Cheaper in Dubai: Home help (obviously!) transport (everything from new car prices, petrol, taxis, public transport, parking fees, traffic violations) Clothes, Shoes, Furniture, and homewares (and soooooo much more variety) Meat (even meat from Australia) Non-fresh consumables and household items Entertainment - movies, free stuff for kids to do everywhere (and I like how welcoming people are about children) Eating out Optical (glasses and contact lenses) Some medications - including the fact you don't need to see a doctor to get a script Tax-free status Household appliances souks jewellery beauty therapies travel - so much closer to so many places for holidays! Cheaper in Australia: Education Medical Fresh fruit and veges - not necessarily the price but the fact it doesn't go off by the time you get home! Sporting activities Non-appliance electronics but not significantly cheaper telecommunications Overall I would say there is no comparison and it is definitely cheaper to live in Dubai. Hope this helps! edited by Embo on 09/07/2011

I was really happy with City for my DS' operation but I have to say that it is the only ER I have been to in the world as a type 1 diabetic where they did not test my blood sugar level. At all. When the reason I went there was because I couldn't control my sugar levels. Thats pretty poor in my book!

Nurse from City Hopsital N: Hello ma'am. I am phoning up about your son's tonsilectomy appointment Me: You mean my daughter's? N Yes thats right Ma'am your son's operation Me: No I think you mean my daughter's operation N: Oh yes sorry ma'am (giggles). I want to make appointment for the tonsilectomy Me: Well the tonsilectomy is already booked for the 29 N: Oh you already made the booking? Me: Yes, the operation is going ahead on the 29 N: Oh ok Ma'am but I am calling to make appointment for aneasthetist check up Me: Oh ok no problem..when do you want to see her? N: When you want to come ma'am? Me: Umm...how long before the operation do you need to see her? N: Day before ma'am Me: Right..sooooo you need to see her on the 28? N: Yes ma'am. What time you want to come? Me: Umm what time do you have available? N: One minute ma'am (sound of scrambling)..Ma'am I am not sitting at computer so I will call you back with the time ok ma'am? Me: UNREPEATABLE Oh this reminded me of one of many "McDonalds" experiences at City Hospital. DS admitted to ward and waiting for surgery and the nurse is constantly referring to him as "her" Me: Sorry, but he is a he Nurse: No ma'am she is a girl Me: Nooo he is definitely a boy Nurse looks at folder: No ma'am, says here she is a girl Me: Ok I don't care what it says, he is definitely a boy Nurse: No ma'am not possible Me: would you like me to undress him and show you? Nurse: Ok ma'am ... oh I see, maybe my form incorrect Me: you think?!

Yikes! Good luck with that SpeedQueen! We have been in City Hospital paediatric ward a couple times recently and agree with previous posters that it is like a hotel room (actually had a better tv than some "5 star" hotels we have stayed at!) Each time the room has had a bed and a cot as DS is 3 and they weren't sure which he would prefer. Anyway, long answer, but I am sure you would all fit in the one room.

Try the Gina Ford book on how to train in one week. It has all the signs to look for in your child. My DD was just over 2 when we started with her but in hindsight she was nowhere near ready and it took AGES before she was totally dry. I started it because everyone in my mothers group was doing it and I thought I should. Each child is different though. My DS is almost three and we are going through it at the moment. Almost from the first day he caught on and it has been much much easier.

Absolutely love it...oh, and so do the kids! The staff are fabulous, and they seem to be happy. I think that is the most important bit. The school got off to a slow start due to issues with a change of Principal after the first year they opened, but Mrs Lloyd has taken it on and seems to have the whole place running very well. My kids were devastated to leave Star when we left Dubai, and it was the first thing they asked about when they found out we were coming back. Needless to say, we are starting there again in September. There are quite a few teachers leaving this term which is a real shame :( but hopefully the new teachers will be good and enthusiastic. We are coming back in September and will see how things go.

I have seen them here in baby stores but I don't think it will be any good for your children - they would be too big. I feel your pain! I am searching for things for my children too - maybe an indoor trampoline?

We will be back in time for school - will hide out from the heat for as long as possible I think. Embo - is it mostly the school run to put you off DSO? Or are there other things about Silicon Oasis that you aren't keen on? The school run was one of the major factors. It felt a little bit like a resort with the beautiful pool, tennis court, playgrounds. But funnily enough, even resort living can get boring! Its a little sterile and I got sick to death of the sameness of the environment if that makes sense? I love driving around Mirdif and sticky beaking at all the weird and wonderful different villas. I love having a hundred different restaurants to order takeaway from. I love having everything I could possibly want at MCC down the road. I love being near school and having spur of the moment playdates. I love the variety of people. DSO became really draconian with rules about how many children you can take to the pool, constant pool closures after poo incidents, nasty emails about pets, ridiculous rules about returning the garden to sand etc etc etc. I will probably get shot down for saying this, and it is only MY experience, but I found most people to be really unfriendly, especially if your husband doesn't work for a particular company. Having said that, we were in phase 1 of Cedre Villas and maybe phase 2 is better. I haven't been back since the day we left and have no desire to. Although, I do miss the pool ...! But we're joining a club so I can take the kids swimming over the holidays.

Seems odd that they would want you to ripp up the garden when surely the fact that a house has a 'mature' garden, its more of a selling point than a sand pit! You would think so, wouldn't you! So much for going green and all the so called green initiatives. I'm out in DSO and have seen this many times. Mature gardens and trees, just cut down and turned to sand. Absolutely ridiculous! But it is a money making scheme. The garden companies benefit, and the landlord doesn't have to water the garden in between tenants. There is no "value" attached to a mature tree here! Very valid points and they need addressing with management, the amount of water that is wasted in DSO is unreal, a bit to keep gardens going would be a drop in the ocean. Oh they love their own trees! I'll never forget seeing the little canopies erected to protect the baby palms from the harsh summer sun. Meanwhile refusing point blank to consider a shade sail in the playground to protect our children! Lol, the photo I took still makes me laugh!

How can you *love* a house that is not your own, in fact how can you love a pile of bricks? Weird concept. How can you *not* love a place that you call home, whether it is your own or not - what is the point of living somewhere/how can you be happy somewhere that you don't love! You are clearly, clearly, not Cancerian! Agree! I have loved every house I have lived in (and some have been really cr@ppy) because thats where so many lovely memories have been made with my family.

Buy a falcon, no more cockatoo problem, or buy tin hats for sprogs. That would be so cool (the falcon not the tin hats). Would decimate the hyper-pooing machine population too!

*chuckle* what are you going to do if wild birds start 'swooping'. That's what birds do when they feel threatened or have a nest near-by. Fortunately the pidgeons here don't have the pluck. I would have them shot too if I could. Seriously though, I grew up with the seasonal swooping of magpies so do understand about nesting birds. However haven't seen too many magpies or other native swooping birds here. And a privately owned non-native bird does attach a rather different duty of care on the owner I would have thought.

Check dubizzle or lost pets to see if you can see an ad for it missing. I doubt any one has let it out on purpose! Do you know how much they cost? I don't know how much they cost but I know how much I would pay to have it shot. Just kidding. Kind of. They let it out every day and when it has had enough of swooping a young boy comes to try and re-capture it.

I don't think the garden thing is correct TBH, there is nothing in the contract that states that. Re pet rules, just things like you have to pick up after them and not have them off lead in the compounds. Common sense really, no reptiles or farm stock to be kept either! LOL It is correct, you will have to return the garden to sand. We are still getting emails from DSO and a little while ago got an email that stated that due to ongoing issues with people not picking up after their pets, they were going to institute a fine system (fining the whole street no less, unless they could identify the perpetrator!) and if that failed, ban all pets. Not sure what happened in the end, maybe someone still living there would know. They can not enforce that and i wrote and told tham as much! LOL Lol good for you!! I thought it was outrageous! Like charging for the poo incidents in the pool!

I haven't seen my contract yet but when I spoke to the guy at DSO regarding this he said yes we do have to if we want our deposit back, if we leave the garden then they keep the deposit DSO rule. I remember reading about this from Greenish hence why I checked with the DSO office. TBH though they've been a dream to deal with and I would much prefer to rent off them than many of the individual owners who have probably bought at very high prices and can't maintain their villas They're not so much a dream to deal with at the end of your contract!! :)

Shaf I was just about to put out a message for you! I have found Zumba and the shop has it in both NTSC and Pal versions. It costs 229 dirhams but includes a belt (?). I am going back to purchase tomorrow or the next day. Do you want me to pick up a copy for you? It would be a lot cheaper on Amazon but if you can't wait ... ETA: the guys in the shop told me that the game box will have either a letter or a number on the front. If it has a number it is PAL and if it is a letter it is NTSC. Maybe the image on Amazon will be clear enough to see? edited by Embo on 14/06/2011 Oh I would love that! But I am in Doha!!! I bought the Mel B one from Virgin and the Dance workout one from Australia (sorry). Someone else mentioned that they bought Zumba from Virgin at MOE and as soon as this month's pay comes in I am going to see if they have at MCC! Otherwise I think I will buy from Amazon (much cheaper). On your original thread someone else suggested good places to buy Wii games. I have checked C4, Hyoerpanda, Plug-Ins, E-Max and a couple of the more independent games shops at MCC and no-one really has a lot of Wii stock. I really like both the ones I have. I use the Mel B workout for toning and then to burn more calories I do a couple of the quick workouts on the My Fitness Coach Dance Workout which really burns the calories!! Its really fun too. DH does the combat workout on Mel B and samurai fighting game on the Dance one! I like the sound of Zumba though and I'm really keen to get it because it sounds like heaps of fun but I don't feel confident enough in my coordination to front up at a gym class so I thought it would be good to practice at home first!! lol! I am at home cos i have 2 young kids.. they sleep and i workout! :) Gonna go check out virgin here today.. i hope they have something in stock! :) Thats my problem too - can't get to a gym! I was running in the mornings but definitely too hot now!

I agree everyone needs an advocate to stand up for their rights BUT i really don't know how some defense lawyers can look themselves in the mirror - this also goes for pressecutors who have convicted innocent people....... really is winning that important that you will sell out your morals / eithics... You're right - it is one of the difficulties with the profession (like any) where you may be asked to defend someone you don't believe to be innocent for the sake of the wider principles of the legal system. If you KNOW your client is guilty because they have told you so, technically your obligation to the courts is higher than the obligation to the client, and you are obliged to resign the case (unless the client intends to plead guilty). I am sure law is not the only profession where people are required to do distasteful things where there may be a clash between your personal views and the duties you are required to perform.

The defense is claiming that she drowned and they know full well that her body was too decomposed to find out if that was true by an autopsy, so they are "safe" with that story and that gets CA off the hook for murder since it was just an "accident" in the pool. I think the defense is hoping that she won't get a harsher sentence and the jury can only get her for not reporting it and dumping the body but are hoping a jury won't convict her on murder since, as the defense is claiming, it was only an "accident". I honestly don't know how her attorneys sleep at night. . In defence of the attorneys ... lawyers can't actually put forward a defence that they [b'>know[/b'> to be untrue. Everyone is entitled to be defended. I don't think blaming the lawyers is fair or reasonable. But they can defend someone using a strategy / defense that they are 99% sure is untrue...... Maybe a grey area? I was pretty sure that you can't even surmise what might have happened unless you know it did. Ie you can say "no that didn't happen" to an accusation but you can't say "but it probably happened like this" unless you know it did. In this case, if the defendant said "she drowned" the lawyers have to believe that that is what happened if they use it as part of their defence. But i think you're right, if they choose to believe her account of what happened then they can put it forward. As long as they don't categorically know it to be untrue.

Although i have brought my ozzie credit Cards, i have been using my Commonwealth EFTPOS here in various cash machines at the malls with no problems. EFTPOS is basicallly a bank debit card, but the australian ones do not have chips therefore only can be used in cash machines. Although not sure what "an internationally enabled eftpos" is?? maybe its a special one?? i didnt inform my bank i was travelling and no problems. Only problem i have had is when using my credit card which i have no pin for and have had a few arguments when been told i need the pin. When i had used it about 20 times already at carrefour, got manager over etc who said no longer available, swore blind it was a new thing implemented that morning when i pointed out had only used in there yesterday, i didnt believe him so went to a cashier a few down and it worked, called manager over and told him not to tell lies. Now if they ask for pin i just override it myself with the enter button or cancel, not sure which but i punch a few in and it works everytime.lol. When my sister comes here she refuses to use her pin and insists on signing as she was told by her bank that they would only guarantee transactions that were signed!

EFTPOS stands for Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale. Basically it just means you use your debit card at the till rather than a credit card. You can of course also use it at ATMs. It will be accepted everywhere I would think.

So have decided on the WiiFitPlus with the Wii console. yaay! Question: Are the fitness CDs like YourShape, Zumba, etc available in dxb? If yes, where? Sorry, but i am brand new into this wii/playstation/nintendo world! :) THANKS! Virgin Megastore seems to have quite a good range. I haven't found Zumba but you can get from Amazon. For some reason they don't seem to stock as many Wii games here as Xbox or Playstation. Not sure why. if u get from amazon, can u play it on the wii i buy here? There is some middleeast version, us version, uk version , etc right? Hmmm not sure but the ones I buy in Australia are fine. Oh but maybe thats because we also bought the console in Australia do you think? Hi I use the Mel B workout which tailors a daily program for you based on your goals. DH quite enjoys doing the combat workout too (so funny to watch!). I also use the Fitness Coach Dance workout which I really enjoy. Both of these are on the Wii without needing Wii Fit. I am also looking for the Zumba game as well but can't find it in Dubai. The advantage is you don't need to go to a gym and can do it anytime. Like all things you can go as hard as you want but you do need to be motivated. We did buy a Kinnect too but returned it as it didn't really work. I think there was some interference from sunlight or something as it kept stopping to rescan my body and reset itself which was REALLY frustrating. Other people might find it different though. We decided to try again when they bring out a second generation version as I think the technology might not quite be there yet. Hope this helps! Thanks Embo. So basically, I can just get the Wii, and get different fitness CDs instead of getting the Wii Fit? Also, what exactly does the Wii Fit have then? I'm not entirely sure what the Wii fit does that you can't do without it. There is a balance board but I'm not sure how you would use that with the cardio elements of the games. Maybe it enhances your experience with the games but tbh I don't think I am missing much!

I read on news.com.au that the issue was that the Embassy advised her not to get involved with the police if she had any drugs in her system but they failed to warn her of the possibility of being charged with adultery. ie they took it on themselves to give her some advice but not full advice. I agree it will be very interesting to see where it goes.

I got a cover for a samsung galaxy and it fits the kindle perfectly! Doesn't have a light though. [i'>Really[/i'> recommend the OP gets a cover with a light if she can. It's proven invaluable when I want to read after dark [and DH is asleep!'>. Can't help you with where to buy from here though [sorry'>; I bought mine from Amazon UK. :) ^^^^ ditto I just use a booklight if I want to read at night - clips on really easily to the cover :)

I have also been on a quest to find one! I have seen them in one of the children's shops in Dubai Mall (sorry can't remember the name). Also Hamleys had a couple varieties.
