Very unfortunate situation.... and no doubt been made alot harder now due to MIL reaction. Two years is along time to have something that ultimately you treat as a child and love to then be taken away from you even though you were told it was temp. I can see why they are so upset and clearly love the pooch very much hence the reaction. My folks used to be sad when we'd get back off our hols having looked after our 2 lads for just a fortnight.. We did bring ours straight out with us, I couldn't have come here without them. You've done that hard bit of leaving her behind, if she is settled, happy, healthy and sounds as though well looked after I would try very hard to not think about the comments made by MIL and think what is best for the dog.... there are so many needy dogs here that you would get such a massive sense of satisfaction helping one of them.. I don't envy your decision, but sure you will make the right choice for the dog.

I can't think of the name of the apartments but it is the one next to the Marriort at the Marina, they allow dogs, and am pretty sure there are 2 or 3 others, but can't remember the names. I am sure that somebody will know on here later....

I agree if you one child who is scared that it will disrupt the class but they have to start somewhere to overcome their fears. However, I had a very disappointing experience with Active Sports. They had sooooooo many kids in the pool it was just ridiculous, and there was no order of level, some could swim others had aids. Far too much going on to learn anything. I asked for my money back after the 3rd lesson and was asked to give it a bit longer.... I did but gave up with them after the 6th lesson and cut my losses. As another has already said, we found Lisa at Supersports and she is amazing. Max 3 in a class, more often than not only 2. They get max attention and it is not a free for all...... daughter loves her and can't wait to get in the pool... although already a fairly decent swimmer for her age, she has come one leaps and bounds with Lisa... highly recommended...

Thanx ladies so it looks like 20k a year extra is about right, that's what we were thinking of being in the region of. And BMAP I have only been here since Aug last year, but I find it too chilly for a swim at the moment, going from such an extreme temp to a much lower one albeit still very nice is a huge adjustment..... We went to Wild Wadi in Nov with some friends and found that too cold in the afternoon.....

Are you happier having your own pool than using a community pool? Just wondering about the pro's and con's of having your own private pool versus the alternative. Do you find maintenance of a private pool a hassle? Was also thinking a community pool might facilitate making friendships in your local community, but the downside is that you have to get organised to get the family there and it might be crowded too or not maintained to your standard. Wondering whether we should be looking for a villa with or without a pool... We have no community pool so have membership at a club so from that point of view we get to meet people. But then there is also the hygiene side of community pools that I try hard not to think about..... the convenience of having a pool at home would be nice.

Our landlord put a pool in only because they plan on living in the villa in 6 years time. we paid an extra 20 k on the rent ...as they put in a huge pool and we were very inpressed with it. We also moved in before the work started took about 3 months do complete the pool and all the landscaping. Can you remember who installed the pool? Are you at The Villa?

Not sure whether to move on to where there is one already done or ask LL if he is open to putting one in. If so, do you know how much additional rent you would be looking at paying for having the pool? TIA

Maldives is nice but depends if you've been there seen it done it already... and how much of a completely relaxing holiday you want. If you want to get out and about but not too much air time then I would be heading Sri Lanka or India.

I think for a single girl in her 30 s it will be different to living in the UK I think it would be extremely difficult for her to find a long term partner here ( see previous threads ) but if she is just career driven and coming here for money and experience then yes Personally I feel Dubai is best suited to married people as it can be lonely for singletons JMHO This is what I felt, but not being in that position or knowing any singles I wasn't sure.

We have a sweet lady in once a week for 4 hours, her cleaning is OK not the best but quite like her. We leave 20 AED each visit.

Hi SunDevil It is stomach churning isn't it? They are just family and the thought of them travelling alone had me a nervous wreck. I shipped my 2 boys in August last year. There crates came a few weeks before take off so they got used to them and they also had the house smell on them. We took them to the airport and I cried when I put them in their crates and said goodbye.... such a baby. Then I saw them from the departure gate being lifted into the plane, the guys on the ground kept going over to them and talking to them. When we arrived at DXB we were sat right above where they take them out so had I been able to open the window I could have almost touched them. So we watched them being unloaded. They looked calm throughout the whole process, the only thing I did was to ask the staff just outside of the plane to please ask the ground crew to get them moved, as they had been down on the ground for 15 mins, which isn't long but it was Auguest right.... and I waited until they had been moved so I knew had been collected. They were then delivered to us about 3 hours later, very pleased to have a massive hug but in no way stressed. Neither had soiled their crates, but then our flight was just over 6 hours. Very relieved to have them arrive safely and I appeared to be the only stressed by it all. As long as your baby is fit and cleared by your vet I would bring them in a heartbeat. As already said sedation is not allowed, it reduces there blood pressure and then add to that the different pressures which can occur with flying it is extremely dangerous for an animal. We flew with Emirates and Dubai Kennels & Cattery handled the DXB side for us. Good Luck with your decision.

Same thoughts as Claire, went to a party there last week. Kids had a great time, but have to say the ease in which the kids can walk down the corridor and straight onto the street was fairly stressful. They do have somebody on the door, but if she is dealing with somebody coming in or on the phone I suspect it would be very easy to just walk out unnoticed. We too had lots of kids coming off requiring ice pack and lots of friction burns from the slides I guess, so long sleeves and trousers...

Dogs are not allowed off the leash in the Springs. Please report this dog and owner as soon as possible. I live in the Springs and my children play in the parks and an aggressive dog roaming free is not acceptable. Dogs are not allowed off the leash in ANY residential area! Actually, dogs must be on a leash in any public place (ie outside of your yard). "Dangerous" breeds as identified by the DM must also have a muzzle in public. I really dislike animal owners who act irresponsibly as it affects every one else! Dog owners have to have more restrictions put on them, non-owners are fearful of dogs attacking them...it's a real lose-lose situation! It isn't just non-dog owners who are fearful of being attacked. I have 2 dogs who I always walk on a leash, they have done training and socialisation, however, if a dog approaches them while they are on leads it always ends up with blood shed. I don't understand why an owener would just let their dog roam out on it's own or without a leash. First of all it puts people at risk, it puts other animals at risk, it is illegal for it to be out without a leash, and nobody is picking it's poo up!! If you can't be responsible don't have animals.

We're moving to 'The Villa' from Arabian Ranches next week - at 'The Villa' we're getting a 4/5 bedroom detached villa with a private pool, for 120k (one or two are a little cheaper). The Villa is situated on Emirates Road between Arabian Ranches and Al Ain Road, behind Falcon City. On Arabian Ranches you could get a 2/3 bedroom terraced townhouse, with a garden, and communal pool for the same money. Edited to add that usually it's advisable to live somewhere near to where DH works, or where the children will go to school. edited by assisi on 21/01/2011 Glad to read you are still coming...... another animal lover on site... yay..!!

DD had a friend stay over last night, so having tidied the chaos in the bedroom we then did a bit of Kinect'ing.... watched some Monkey Life and am about to iron some Hama Beads..... oh and I've done the boring weekly shop.

Hi, tried calling but no answer. Is the code like DHP or something? If so then that is the distemper, canine HEP and Parvo vaccination. When we applied for the boys import permits the Ministry wouldn't accept the coded description on their records. So we had to get the UK vet to write each one exactly and then restamp before they would release the permit...... got here in the end.

We had the same thing, I think they have a set trawl. So guessing you have been shown places in Springs, Victory Heights, Arabian Ranches, they seem to be the usual areas the relo's like to roll out. When we asked about Silicon Oasis we were told it was in the middle of nowhere and there was nothing or nobody living there... LOL... As you are now doing we started the hunt ourselves and ended up at The Villa...

We've always enjoyed great snow in Flaine, fly into Geneva. The Montsoleil apartments are lovely and it is a true ski in and out :) Not pretty like some places but the skiing is excellent. <em>edited by emlsnre on 16/01/2011</em>

Hope you find her soon... maybe try seeing if you can get her a little harness to walk her in. My boys used to slip their collars off so tey they have harnesses now so no escape.... Good Luck.

Yes if you are already living in Dubai then I should think it would be relatively easy to sort it out yourself so long as you are 100% with your paperwork. I think it takes 2-3 days for the import to be granted.

We used DKC Dubai Kennels and Cattery. They sorted out the permit, collected it and did the licencing too, collected the boys from the airport and delivered to the Villa. I have 2 half sisters, and as already said I wouldn't expect to receive anything from their father's side when he passed on. But if a child has been brought up by a man as his own since a very young age and had no contact with the bio father then it is very harsh to be treated in this way. It is so final and had you not told her then she would probably have felt very confused and frustrated at not being able to ask her step grandmother why she would do this (unless there is a history already there.). Not to be acknowledged at all not even in a very small way is very sad. :(

I wouldn't rule any schools out until you have actually been to see them. Before moving here we did alot of research and the school we thought would be perfect wasn't our final choice once we'd visited them all. GWA didn't feel overwhelming at all when we had a look, so I would certainly take a look for yourselves. As Claire has said already we too have friends with children there and they are very happy with it. Good luck and I am sure once it has sank in people will be happy for you all albeit a little sad to wave you off....
