Four Seasons in Langkawi overlooks the cement works and is extremely expensive. Tanjung Rhu is nearby and has a far better view (no cement) and a perfect beach and a fantastic deal where you pay something like $50 a day per room and get all food and all soft drinks for free. Also recommend Bon Ton Resort but you need to like cats (google it). The food is very good and reasonably priced. The "rooms" are houses taken from traditional malay villages and then reconditioned. They are huge and gorgeous. I have stayed at the Taj on Rebak island. The beach is rubbish and and planes fly right over you so it's not perfect but it isn't expensive and kids can cycle all over the island and it feels very safe for them. The service is sweet and well meaning and you can get a very good deal on a 2 bedroomed suite should you have kids.

We would like a tortoise so if Fiat500 is still looking for someone to adopt one, please let me know. We have a large garden but it has a pool; does that matter?

Pleased to hear your cat won and I hope he's ok. If the white terror comes back, do turn the hose on him. It will work, although it may take a few attempts.

I'd go for VH over FC. FC is still under construction in areas and isn't terribly green and most of the Wonders that were promised haven't appeared, as far as I'm aware. VH is much more established although not so convenient for Downtown.

Thanks for that. The children didn't say anything; that's the odd thing. They told us that he said he'd been looking on google and saw that the pool had been filled and told them. This seemed very odd since I doubted that google would be taking images on a daily or even weekly basis as it would be very costly. They would have no reason to know anybody that lives near us or even in the UAE but that wouldn't stop them sending some form of PI to take a look. Creepy!

You're quite right wuffles, and thanks for reminding me. She knows much more about fb than I do. I have her password and I need to login as her from time to time just to check that all is okay. One thing I have always told my DD is that she can always tell me anything and, fortunately, she still seems to. Also, from a young age, I told her that if anybody, and that includes family or really close friends, tells her to keep a secret, she needs to come and tell me straight away. I told her that there were some bad people who looked normal but were actually monsters in disguise. There weren't many and hopefully she'd never meet them, but one giveaway sign was if they asked her to keep a secret or to do anything that didn't seem right. Also, as she got older and started to play on Club Penguin or Moshi Monsters, I told her to be very careful and never tell anyone anything about her. I explained that the kid she was playing with online could actually be one of those monsters just pretending to be a kid. This way, I hoped I was keeping her safe whilst letting her play with these really fun games.

For some reason, a lot of UAE residents dismiss this, as they think the laws here are so strict etc and nothing happens here, and all of these case studies are based in the UK or US......but it is going on a lot. I now know of 2 cases of fb abuse within the UAE, and nobody is monitoring their teens laptops, and when they do find things, they are deleting or dismissing. Ahh yes, just reading (properly this time) your OP. It's really difficult with FB - I would never dream of letting my girls on it yet I know so many friends who actively encourage it and even send me friend requests from their children - unbelievable I don't know if I have done the right thing, but I do allow my DD on fb. She is my friend and I have her password so i can check everything that happens on it. With mobiles and laptops and all sorts of other ways to access fb and other social networking sites, she could have easily gone behind my back and got a fb page without my knowledge. I'd rather she had one and I knew all about it. To me, fb and the internet in general does hold plenty of potential for harm to our babes just as going down to the woods or out to play did when we were young. Our parents didn't stop us going out because they knew we had to learn independence and they taught us to be very careful and they kept an eye on us and knew where we were going. I have tried to take the same attitude to the internet today, but I don't know if I'm doing the right thing or not. I fear that she could be targeted if she's online but I also fear that if I prevent her from using the same social media that all her friends use, she'll just do it behind my back which is far more dangerous. What do EWers think?

I also have very straight hair and had the poodle perm in the '80s (and didn't look cute...). Do you colour your hair at all? If so, I would really advise against perming as well. Colour + perm = ruined hair that will break as soon as you look at it. A decent stylist can give your hair lots of bounce and volume which looks way better than sad perm curls. I do understand your frustration. I could never understand the fashion for really straight hair when that's what nature had blessed me with and, in my opinion, is really unattractive. Have you thought about a fringe? What about straighteners? I know that sounds ridiculous but they can be used to give you really nice waves. A curling wand can do the same but straighteners (because of how you do it; it's as if you were curling a ribbon with a pair of scissors) have a longer affect. Layers can help give bounce. Go and see a top stylist for a consultation and avoid the poodle look if you can! edited by emmsie on 18/10/2012

Thanks to all you have answered, and for the generally helpful suggestions. I understand the upset it causes when a healthy animal is put down, and I expected some concern/criticism on the board for it. It is never a position I expected to be in as we are a family of animal lovers and have always commited to our pets who travel from country to country with us. That includes this cat - we spent over AED 10,000 that we couldn't really afford on his vet bills after his accident to get his broken legs pinned and fixed (he healed really well). He spent one month caged at the vets and I don't know if that time cooped up damaged him behaviour-wise but that was back in May. If it was just me and my husband we would stick with him, but I have to prioritise my daughter. She is getting scared of him, although she is still sweet with him despite countless bites and scratches. But we had a close call with a scratch near her eye a few days ago and I would never forgive myself if she was permanently hurt. I have advertised twice on Dubizzle and once on EW. I have now emailed Bin Kitty (thank you for that lead). I emailed FF a few days ago although have had no answer so I will try phone them. He has been neutured but that didn't help, and has been on tablets from the vets but that hasn't made enough of a difference. I'm not on Facebook so if anyone has any contact numbers for the other organisations that would be helpful. Likewise please ask around in case anyone is willing to give him another chance. I'm not going to set him free. He hasn't been in the wild since he was 4 weeks old and I would rather have him die in a controlled way at the vets then suffer a slow starvation if he couldn't fend for himself or got injured by other wild cats. I think you are doing absolutely the right thing. Setting an animal "free" to roam the streets and potentially starve to death sounds like an odd liberation. Whilst such freedom may soothe some people's conscience, I agree with you and think humane euthanasia is a far kinder and better option. With any luck, you won't have to do either. Fingers crossed.

it seems I did this in school, it was just called penmanship though :). Our penmanship teacher was the Principle and she was tough on us. Our round letters had to be round and perfect, tails in the right spot, straight lines straight. We learned to write with our arms rather than just our fingers.. All her students ended up writing beautifully and above all, it was readable!!! Sounds to me that is what is now called cursive writing :) it is not a bad thing, it is a good thing and does no harm in the least. It teaches the children to form proper letters that they will always remember. so, I hope all children have a Miss Iveson to teach them how to write and link properly so it is readable :) now reading below responses it seems cursive is more detailed than plain penmanship. Could someone put a cursive sentence up here? A learning morning for me. Cursive is penmanship. I learned English cursive at school. Apparently though, now a good majority of teachers do no know how to teach cursive properly. I would imagine that would be a problem. What I find amazing is that there seems to be so much discussion of this. There is printing in block letter when a child first starts, then they learn to link the letters to make it writing. The letters in writing are a bit different though than block printing. Both forms take practise. Being an old person, I learned to write with an ink nib pen and an inkwell lol...and let me tell you, Miss Iveson was a stickler that no messes were made. Anyway, just my input. edited by SueB on 17/10/2012 edited by SueB on 17/10/2012 I wish I had had your teacher at school. My handwriting is dreadful and a source of great embarrassment. Didn't stop me academically and I did very well at school but I wish I had better handwriting. It looks so slovenly and messy. I think it is important to try and get kids to write beautifully. Not all will manage it, although if they had Miss Iveson teaching them; they probably would all be fine.

Sad music on an advert can do it for me! The score from The Lion King gets me going every time. My daughter knows that I can't read to her from the Lonely Scarecrow or Abandoned (both are poignant) without rivers of tears. Pathetic? Sad? Probably. Hasn't stopped me from kicking corporate butt all over the world and negotiating billion dollar deals though. It never comes out in relation to important stuff, even personal emotional stuff, so I think it's a good thing. Tears produce healing endorphins and remind us of our humanity (or some such rubbish!).

Yes, Nomad, it was my puppy who was sold with papers saying the wrong birth date. It was only by a month. It should be noted, however, that most top breeders take puppies away from their mothers at 8 weeks and my puppy was shipped at 12 weeks so he had 4 more weeks with his mother than a puppy from an ethical breeder in the UK or US might have had. I checked with the vet and I was assured that this is common practice so that the puppies can travel at 3 months rather than 4 months which is UAE law. It does not affect the puppies in terms of missing out on time with their mother since it has been established by the Kennel Club that puppies can leave their mothers at 8 weeks. I believe that it is wrong to consider that dogs go through "trauma" by travelling at a young age. They are not aware that they are in an aeroplane, they are in a crate which most puppies find secure and comforting. They do not know they are travelling at 500mph or that they are 38,000 feet in the air and they are not traumatised by it. I think to consider that they are is an arrogant imposition of human values onto a different animal. Some may be confused or tired, but that is not trauma. I think you are completely right about considering adoption and suggesting it but I fear that the tone of some of the pro-adoption posts may indadvertedly come across as dogmatic (excuse the pun...), aggressive and bullying and it doesn't help your cause. I say this not to be unpleasant but to explain why you get some very negative reactions.

Not anymore it doesn't and I'm not referring to the old new use of the word "gay". For that, use the word "fabulous". "Gay" now means rubbish or...lame! Teenagers used 'gay' for 'lame' when I was growing up in NZ twenty years ago! I would have thought hte PC brigade would have banned the use of the word gay to mean lame...... You would but rather fabulously they haven't. Most male fabulous people I know use the word "queer" which is about as un PC as it gets.

What can I cook using Radish and Okra. I have looked online (still looking too) and the ones that pop out are all salads. Except I have lots to put in salad already any "cooked" ideas please? Also, i find okra really slimy and never usually buy it so can't quite stomach it normally. Any solutions to this? thanks :) Blanche the okra in boiling water for two minutes and then plunge it into really cold, iced water. Then don't add it to the stew or whatever you're cooking until about 15 minutes before you're ready to serve. That way it doesn't overcook. The blanching and ice water seems to stop the slime. Good luck and let me know if it works for you. I did okra last night using this tip and had no slime!

Yep here we go again....people TELLING other people what they should do. Why not just point people in the direction of information and allow themselves to make their OWN choice...whether it be right or wrong? People can make their own decisions, but others stating their are breeders in the UAE when there aren't is wrong! If you see the state of many of the poor dogs out there and the ones dumped by people who've brought in pure breds etc then you'd feel as strongly about it as I and others do. I will continue to give actual FACTS, then people can make up their own mind. But the simple matter is that there are so many abandoned animals here we really don't need more bringing in. And if people bothered to search the forum and look up all the threads on these subjects, then we wouldn't have to keep repeating ourselves. edited by Chocs01 on 09/10/2012 My post has nothing to do with dogs..it is to do with dictating to others what they should or shouldn't do. By all means inform but telling someone "do NOT buy a dog from a pet shop or a breeder" is dictating That's MY opinion and I'll state it knowing exactly how pet shops operate here! People should NOT buy from pet shops here - end of! CHOCS01 - I love your passion even if I am not necessarily in agreement with you. Could you tell us how you know that EuroPuppy and all pet shops here only purchase from puppy farms? You state that it is a FACT that they do and yet I am not aware of any evidence. I am not saying you're wrong. I am just interested in how you are so sure.

I wasn't wildly impressed. I can't really see that it does any more than a tinted moisturiser. I certainly didn't feel that it compared to a moisturiser, primer and foundation or whatever it claims to do. Does anyone know if it includes an SPF? Thanks! My DD has had Lyme Disease so I'm a little freaked out by ticks and very wary of them. My cats used to get them in the UK all the time but I haven't see any on them here or on my dog. I'll keep an eye on them though. Is there a particular tick "season"? TIA Very similar to a dog tick is common here, they live in the sand and catch onto dogs pads as they walk - they're indestructible little critters - not interested in cats or people though. There has been a tick explosion of these kinds in some years, usually around spring time. Presumably I need to check around my puppy's paws as we often walk in sand. What am I looking for or is it obvious? Do they travel up the leg or just stay in the paw area? I groom him quite often, but I don't tend to spend any time on his legs or paws. Perhaps I need to take a closer look?

The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to eat less, exercise more and drink plenty of water !! Absolutely agree. There is no easy way, unfortunately. Need to learn to eat very small portions of anything you normally eat, like two tablespoons of rice or potatoes, 100 g of meat, tiny sliver of cake-- all very hard to do, but in the end you do get used to it and it is the only thing that works, or at least, has worked for me. I lost about 10 kgs 14 years ago and have kept it off, just by eating smaller portions. I would like to lose more, but it doesn't seem to be happening and I'm "normal" (whatever that is) weight according to my doctor's chart. I try to exercise, but oh well.... can't always stick to it, just do as much walking as I can. What helps a lot is to keep busy. Don't you get really hungry though? What do you fill up on or do you just use willpower and ignore it?

This is from the BBC website - don't know how long he'd been in Dubai A man is being treated in complete isolation in Glasgow after being confirmed as having Crimean-Congo Viral Haemorrhagic Fever. The 38-year-old man is said to be in a critical condition in the city's specialist Brownlee unit. He was admitted to hospital less than three hours after returning to Glasgow on Emirates flight EK027 from Dubai. The tick-borne tropical disease, which is extremely uncommon in Western Europe, is fatal in up to 30% of cases. The Brownlee unit at Glasgow's Gartnavel General Hospital specialises in infectious diseases. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said the risk of person-to-person transmission of the virus is extremely low. However, as a precautionary measure those who have been in close contact with the patient are being contacted to ensure that there has been no transmission. Continue reading the main story “ Start Quote We are confident that his close contacts subsequently within the city were minimal” NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde This includes tracing three of his fellow passengers on the flight from Dubai to Glasgow which arrived at 12:35 on Tuesday. They were seated in close proximity to him on the flight. The three passengers are being contacted directly as a precaution to ensure that there has been no transmission. The risk to all other passengers on the flight is said to be very low, but if they have any concerns they should contact NHS24 on 08000 85 85 31 for advice.

Donating used/old make-up? Surely that's not very hygienic. Make-up has use by dates and should be binned. Can't people donate new products? I don't think I've ever seen a use by date on make-up (and I have rooms full of the stuff!). Am I blind or just not looking in the right place? It probably should be thrown out after a while, but I must confess to still using 10 year old make-up to no ill harm at all. Mascara is one product (because of it being both liquid and being used so close to the eyes) that definitely should be replaced after 6 months and stops being so good sooner than that as it dries out. Lipsticks and lipgloss do, eventually, go off but you can tell as their consistency or smell changes and lipsticks can last for many, many years. Other than that, most powder make-up seems to last for ages. Am I taking a great risk by using make-up beyond a certain time limit? Mascara should be changed after 6 weeks, especially for those with sensitive eyes. Oh dear...I've been wearing it for over 30 years (not the same one!) and have never changed it after six weeks. Six months if you're lucky and frequently not even that often. I definitely have a really nice Givenchy waterproof that I bought last summer and it's still going strong. Can't remember the last time I had an eye infection so it's my guess that changing it every six weeks might be a little zealous although I bet your mascara is always in perfect condition. Random question but what do do you all think is the best mascara? I love Giorgio Armani's Eyes to Kill and I really like YSL Faux Cils. I love trying new ones and it sounds as though I need to be a little more diligent about throwing away old ones and buying some new ones so what do people suggest? I want length and volume (don't we all?). edited by emmsie on 04/10/2012

I would second the Peak - altho that depends if it's a cloudy day or not. There is a lovely walk around the top of the peak (takes about an hour but through forest and with amazing 360 views of the city). What about taking the cable car from Tung Chung up to the big Buddha? She could do that in a morning. Tea at Peninsula would also be on my list - it's a real experience. Failing that, dim sum at a traditional tea house. In all honestly, HK is just a great city to walk around and take pics. She might also want to take a junk on the harbour - the Duk Ling is operated by the HKTB and is the last remaining traditional junk that sails round the harbour. Am sure she will have a fab time! Yes, that walk is gorgeous. I've also done the walk from The Peak to Stanley (quite a distance) and saw a wild snake which seems extraordinary when you consider how close it is to Central!

Thanks alot Ladies, a huge amount to think about here. We'll speak to the shelters here rather than buy from a shop. We had thought about bring one over from the UK but I think getting a puppy and within days putting it in a crate and flying it around the world is a bit cruel. Admittedly I don't know a great deal about keeping a dog however I didn't know a great deal about babies either and both have survived to tell the tale! One BIG consideration needs to be saving to take any animal with you when you leave! This is a reason why there are also so many abandoned pets. People get a dog or a cat and then something happens and they don't have the funds or haven't done the paperwork, blood tests etc to take the animal with them, nor have they thought about quarantine costs etc of the country they're going to. Also to note that these days airlines refuse to fly certain breeds, especially the ones with reduced breathing capacities. These are also considerations to take into account when getting a pet. Good luck in your search. For me personally I've always had the Heinz 57 mixed mutts, they've always had excellent personalities and seem more well rounded than pure breds. Maybe go to the shelters and take a look, sometimes you can be looking specific, then totally fall in love with an animal that is the complete opposite. Dogs definitely choose you sometimes. I never thought I'd become the adopted mum of a disabled dog, but he's the most awesome pup ever and everyone just falls completely in love with him. Just open your mind and your heart :) Never thought I'd be writing in defence of Chocs01 since we disagreed fairly vehemently over pet shops etc. I do agree, however, that sometimes you can be looking for a certain dog and end up with the opposite. I wanted a female dog and ended up with a boy and I definitely did not want a certain colour. I met my puppy who was exactly the wrong colour and the wrong gender but he was perfect for us with the nicest nature you can imagine and he completely won me over. If I'd stuck to my silly, rigid set of what I wanted, I wouldn't have my puppy and that would have been such a shame. Have a look at the shelters with an open mind, you may find just who you're looking for. If you don't find your perfect pooch at the shelters, have a look at EuroPuppy and Pets Habitat; I simply don't believe they're as bad as some make out and that's from personal experience of dogs from both. Chocs01 is also right about making sure you can afford to fly your pooch when you leave Dubai since it isn't cheap. Everyone's financial set-up and expectations about the future are different, but it's worth being secure in the knowledge that you can afford to get your dog back home as and when you leave. edited by emmsie on 03/10/2012

EFT is very good as is EMDR. I also recommend meditation and mindfulness. I have posted about this before so perhaps you can have a look at that. If you're interested, I'd be happy to give you more information. All of this can be done at the same time as taking anti-depressants; it's not instead of, it's as well as. Very best of luck.

I know I'll get shouted down by lots of very well meaning animal lovers (again) but here goes... If you can find the right breed for you at one of the adoption centres here in Dubai and want to adopt that animal then that is wonderful and the best outcome for all involved. If that doesn't suit you, however, there are alternatives and whatever many other posters will say, I do not believe that all the puppies at all the pet shops are from puppy farms but I could be sadly mistaken. I guess it depends on how much you are prepared to trust people. EuroPuppy, for instance, swear they do not use puppy farms and that all their puppies are kennel club registered. If you're interested, I suggest you contact them directly. I got my dog from a pet shop in Al Barsha called Pets Habitat and again, they say they don't use puppy farms. They write quite passionately about it on their website. I could not be more delighted with our dog who is quite the sweetest and most perfect little boy. I couldn't adopt since there were no hypo-allergenic dogs available for adoption when I was looking. I would love to adopt a dog if I could. I'd run a refuge if I could! I wrote about buying my puppy from Pets Habitat (and my desire to breed dogs) on EW as one of my first postings and was shocked by the outrage and hatred I provoked. Good luck with whatever you decide to do and I hope you find the perfect dog for you, whether that's through adoption, EuroPuppy, a pet shop or anywhere else. Okay, who will be the first to write about how I am a horrible, immoral animal hater?

I've been told (although I haven't tried it) that most of the hotels offer these beach clubs and will allow you to try them out for free for a day. You could probably spend a few months trying all of them in your area.

I don't know any ME brands but the hair mask by Molton Brown is brilliant and I can also recommend the very reasonably priced almond and coconut hair mask by Boots. I use a hair mask at least twice a week and am always trying new products and those two are my favourites.
