DJ Chris Birks <[email protected]> did our wedding last year. He was such a pleasure to deal with. A really lovely guy and definitely had everyone dancing.

The whole point of the PIN is that it is kept confidential and only ever entered by the cardholder. If some petrol station staff are refusing to let customers enter the PIN themsleves, the banks need to be made aware of this. The potential for card fraud is significant. Hear hear, clearly illegal and needs to be reported.

Not sure OP's question qualifies as slander (oral defamation). Their description was very broad and Grumpy's possible explanation is very precise. It *could* be that pipe and that tobacco, but it could be something else. I believe all cultures have a right to be concerned about teens smoking tobacco, or any other substance, in any case. Hope you get a sleep-in this weekend, Grumpy! Sounds like you need it.

Sorry gingerdee, I've only done the tour. If complications develop in my final trimester I will probably switch my preference to City Hospital but am hoping to stay with Al Zahra and not need to find out about their NICU! I'd also like to hear of any other mums' experiences though. Regarding the midwife situation, I've also heard that Sally is back there running it now, which is great news!

From Babycentre's excellent guide to antenatal yoga: "Bikram yoga: also called hot yoga, is generally practised in rooms where the temperature is set at up to 40 degrees C. It's not considered safe in pregnancy, as it can make you overheat." http://www.babycentre.co.uk/a1033241/yoga-styles-in-pregnancy?scid=iOS_MPT_Referral&ModPagespeed=noscript

only some malaria pills have nasty side affects, if you go with malarone thats fine its larim thats is pretty scary and thats what they usally give out here so you just need to read up and not cast all pills with the same nasty side affects as its not true. Malarone's biggest side effect is photosensitivity, which I experienced in South America. It essentially means you need to stay out of the sun. Not great being nocturnal while on a beach holiday to Thailand. I agree with previous poster, read up, don't accept every poster's advice especially those who chastise about generalising on drugs. They offer merely one opinion. Better yet, ask your doctor. I was not given any vaccines or prophylactics for our trip to Phuket last week. I was bitten a lot too because I didn't want to wear repellent with DEET as I'm pregnant, but the mosquitoes don't carry malaria.

Thanks to you both! I went to the Just Kidding workshop last night and was really impressed by the midwife from HealthBay, Dru, who also does the antenatal classes there, so I think I'll sign us up for those. Gotta make sure hubby knows how to play his part! When in July are you both due? I'm on the 31st, right at the end. Leah, did you end up trying Baby Bazaar? I bought loads of books there and clothes too. I didn't find the prices over inflated at all. I've been away for the last couple but will try to make it to the next few. edited by explo on 06/05/2014

I've only ever given a red thumb once when I thought the advice the poster was giving was actually dangerous. I'd already debated the logic with her so it wasn't worth more words from me. I thought it served a good purpose then. I don't think it should be used as a 'sympathy vote' for a poster (agreeing that something they've experienced is horrible).

Hi 2ndbaby, hi Leah, everything going well here. Not counting kicks yet, I'm only 27 weeks. But we've received so many generous hand-me-downs our nursery is sorted! Still keen to hear about anyone's experiences of antenatal classes if you care to share! Cheers!

Thanks Newbie. I've asked my obstetrician about it, and he's "ok" with me getting it but there is no stock available in the UAE! I guess that makes my decision for me. I'm going to ask dad to get the booster in Sydney before coming over as he'll be here before bub is 8 weeks old.

Some antibiotics are perfectly safe if prescribed, as they don't cross the placenta. I was prescribed them for a recurrent infection at around 18 weeks. Trust your doctor.

Rather than contacting the mall, contact Baby Bazaar directly. http://www.babybazaar.org/ They organise the tables. If you can catch it, this month is a good month because they're running it over two days for the first(?) time. Normally it's just the last Saturday of every month. It's always very very busy. Well organised and a good vibe in general. Good luck! edited by explo on 21/04/2014

You shouldn't have been practising any yoga in first trimester. I'm really surprised your instructor still agreed to have you in the class, assuming you were upfront with them. Bikram is not for pregnancy at all because core temperature is raised too high for baby. The fact they don't know this and also allowed you to practise through early pregnancy speaks poorly for them.

I should've specified I need them for an adult bed, a king size. The White Company ones are perfect - they only seem to come in cot and pram sizes though. The ikea one looks lovely too but we'd be fighting over it all night!

Sorry to hijack the thread.....But a question to all the moms who delivered at Al Zahra: I have heard that they do NOT have an anaesthetist for epidural on call. Patient needs to inform them that they would be needing one and the hospital will arrange for one. As many a times women wants to see how much pain they can take and might decide on the last moment that enough is enough and they need pain relief, which is not a possibility at Al Zahra. Also, after calling the Dr. there is no guarantee that he/she will turn up on time..... I am finding this info. a bit hard to believe as it is a big hospital with a large infrastructure......so just wanted to confirm with you all! Also @Carla1, there is a maternity ward doctor on duty at ALL TIMES, so yes, I think you're right not to believe what you were told as it appears to be way off. Thankfully :) edited by explo on 24/03/2014 edited by explo on 24/03/2014

Thanks Dubai Newbie! And big congrats to you! It's very good to know you had a great experience. I went on the Al Zahra tour on Saturday with Emmah and was also really impressed. I am very reassured and had nothing but good vibes and a positive experience. I'm looking forward to delivering there in July/August. @Carla1 I asked about timing a request for epidural and was told categorically that you don't need to book one in advance, that you can decide as late as is medically feasible that you want one and will be accommodated by the anaesthetist. Interestingly, they also have an application underway with the DHA to offer water-birthing. It's a lengthy process but she said it is possible they may have it granted before I'm due. This would be brilliant news. edited by explo on 24/03/2014

Has anyone heard anything about their head midwife, Sally, leaving? A friend did the tour with her only weeks ago and was so impressed with her attitude and approach. I called the labour ward to make an appointment for the tour two weeks ago and they were in a panic saying they couldn't confirm a tour would take place because Sally wasn't there, then the receptionist admitted she didn't know if Sally was actually leaving or not. I emailed them and eventually someone confirmed that Sally had left. I was very very keen to go with Al Zahra for the pro-natural pro-midwife stance and I had the impression a lot of that was to do with the way Sally ran the unit. Anyone know anything further?

Hi @explo. DH got his degree certificate done from the UAE - he spoke to DFAT and also to the UAE Embassy in Canberra, and set everything up from here. He then couriered his certificate to DFAT with a money order (I think) and an envelope, letter and money order addressed to the Embassy [u'>and [/u'>another envelope addressed to him here in Dubai. Once DFAT did what they needed to do, they express posted it to the Embassy with the letter and money order and the envelope addressed to him. The Embassy then emailed him to let him know they had done what they needed to do, and it was ready for collection and popped it into the envelope addressed to him. DH then arranged for the courier company to collect the envelope from the Embassy and it was delivered to him here in Dubai. Phew, hope that makes sense! DFAT and the Embassy were wonderfully helpful and it was a very painless process. Whilst not specific to marriage certificates, it worked for us and I think DFAT and the Embassy are pretty used to dealing with this sort of thing remotely. Good luck!!! That is absolute brilliant news! Very encouraging. I'm going to bite the bullet and go down this path for sure. Thankyou Puck for taking the time to outline it, and to everyone for your helpful comments!

There's attentive customer service and then there is spiteful behaviour and threatening language. The two do not overlap in my book, at all. Anyway, just wanted to call it out as well as getting some advice on how to pursue complaint in UK - but I found the UK Babycentre boards very helpful for the latter. (Apologies for delay in replying, I accidentally deleted my expatwoman ID and had to get it reset by the admins!)

There is an Al Furjan FB page. Ask to join and I am sure the residents can answer your queries. No luck. I asked to join for the purpose of getting a sense of the community as we'll be moving there this year and was told it was for residents only because they exchange private information.

Hi there, I'm a first timer too (pregnancy and on expatwoman) and I'm due on July 31. I'm loving the timing, straight after Eid, if EDD is anything to go by that is. I'm thinking the reduced hours over Ramadan should help me bank those hours of sleep too! I'm with Dr Jozsa, whom I think is amazing, and as yet undecided between City Hospital and Al Zahra but won't be deciding for a few months anyway.
