I second Shop n Ship. Overnight to your UK delivery address then 2-3 business days to your door for perhaps 50-100dh extra, depending on parcel weight. Great stuff!

Wipe down and flush with a solution of vinegar and warm water maybe? Try one part white vinegar to four parts warm water, perhaps. Good luck! edited by explo on 22/07/2014

Well, I may see you there! Our EDDs are only 7 days apart so we could very well overlap in our stays if I'm a little late and you're a little early. I hope you have a good delivery in any case.

That's a shame, Zee, I'm sure you'll have excellent care in any case. You could just use your doctor's stand-in? Al Zahra is so midwife-focused that it a normal delivery there is very little for the obstetrician to do anyway. Best of luck!

I flew the day I received my positive test. Hadn't even been to a dr yet. I last flew at 27 weeks and had to have anti-clotting injections. It was much easier earlier on!

Rentals go very quickly here. You need to be ready to get a deposit down immediately if you see something you want. Best do your research on specific areas prior to viewing properties you intend to apply for. No harm in scoping out various villas as part of your research, but until you're in the position to jump on something you like immediately (content you know exactly what you're after and where) it might help to manage the kids' expectations a little or not take them on those recces. Good luck finding your dream home!

I believe the generic brand you are looking for is Wondfo. They are just the inner strips that usually come inside the branded plastic contraptions. Perfectly functional. I successfully used them 8.5 months ago :)

if you are going to Life Pharmacy, take great care on the stairs, they are extremely slippery, such a ridiculous design and I cannot image who would have thought of putting in stairs like this for a pharmacy of all places where you have to go upstairs for all the disability items. I thought exactly the same thing as I waddled up the stairs to find the maternity hosiery. They have wheelchairs and crutches up there too. How are those customers supposed to access them? Ridiculous.

I've used Geant. Was very happy with them, especially as I could save the order for next time. They arrived on time and I even had frozen items delivered properly. There was one item they didn't have in stock but refunded me on the spot for it.

I second the suggestion for Dr Christian Jozsa without hesitation. He works out of Healthbay Polyclinic as another poster suggested. I know three women who've delivered with him, two with complications. I am about to do so later this month and have seen him all the way through my pregnancy. He is cool, calm and collected - and very personable. He presents information and options to you and allows you to make your own decisions. He is pro-natural and is very respectful of a mother's choices at every step, but, as my friends have said, he is in a class of his own when performing emergency c-sections should circumstances not go to plan. ETA: if you cross to the Pregnancy board, or search his name here, there are plenty of good recommendations for him there too. edited by explo on 14/07/2014

Hi Zeegurl, she will have a stand-in. Call her nurses or reception staff to get the details. I'm delivering at Al Zahra with Dr Jozsa and he is currently on leave. At my last appointment he gave me details of his replacement should I go into labour while he's away. I'm not due until after he gets back though.

Can anyone shed any light on the pre-authorization process for insurance purposes at Al Zahra? Their team have listed a whole lot of items (that they refuse to itemize for me in a schedule) which totals 8k more than their package rate for the same normal delivery. The result is that my insurer has blocked access to my entire remaining maternity allowance based on their over-zealous requests. This means I have nothing available for obstetric care for my final weeks of pregnancy. Any hints on what options I can pursue? I've asked them to seek pre-approval for the basic services only and they have pretty much refused. They're very cagey too, not providing me with a list of what they've requested on my behalf. I feel completely sidelined by them! edited by explo on 07/07/2014

Congratulations mums, hope all is going well with your pregnancy,I just had a tour today at Al zahra and I was really comfortable .I would like to know if anyone here willing to deliver with Dr. Christian Jozsa? I'll be delivering with Dr Jozsa at Al Zahra in a few weeks and have been seeing him throughout my pregnancy at Healthbay. I cannot recommend him highly enough. He delights in his role, is cool and calm and very reassuring. I have two close friends who have also been with him through what others may consider difficult births who say the same thing. His nurses at Healthbay are also amazing, as is the general organisation and supportive vibe at that clinic.

Do your research on using secondhand mattresses. It is NOT simply a question of how comfortable you are with the concept of used items. There have been causal links made with use of secondhand mattresses to SIDS and many advise not sharing mattresses even between siblings. But you should make your own informed decision based on reputable information. The research is only a Google away.

Healthbay Polyclinic rents them on a weekly basis. They recommend booking them to have on hand at home from 37 weeks. Email them on midwives at healthbayclinic dot com. I have mine reserved and will be taking it to Al Zahra. When we did our hospital tour there a couple of months back they did not have any machines but were happy for us to bring our own.

And you might get more feedback if you post this on a general board rather than this one which is specifically for pregnancy and children.

I find their service very useful. I've never had a discrepancy. Was there much difference in actual price? The weight differentials are quite broad aren't they, 500g? But if you feel you were undercharged the first time and overcharged the second it seems like you don't have much to be irate over.

Well done! For future reference, it is of course possible to change names on your Emirates ID. I changed mine as soon as I changed it on my passport. And last time I went to KV, that sandy parking lot had been closed so everyone was forced to use the too-few paid parking spots.

5 days doesn't seem too long for family at all. Do you have any reason to believe her husband is upset about it? I don't think it has anything to do with being "Western". I agree with PP, chat to your Aunt about it.

Hi Bips, have a look at HealthBay Clinic's website. It has contact details for antenatal classes. Google them too. I saw a TimeOut article that summarised a whole range, including private classes that can be fast-tracked. I'm sure you'll find plenty of options. Mine haven't started yet. I'm really looking forward to them though. We both are! How is everyone else doing? I've started to feel pretty tired again this last week but couldn't be healthier so I can't complain!

Not Saffron! Friends of ours took their little ones to the Mina brunch (several restaurants combined at Mina a'Salam) and they have a nice little kids corner with activities. The best one for kids is Al Badia golf club but they've just closed for summer (being outdoors).

You might want to search for/enquire about 'glass engraving' instead. Places like Minutes in all the malls might do it. We had beer coolers printed o/s for our wedding, in large numbers then shipped over here. It may work out cheaper to have them done abroad.

They sound like horrible experiences! I've only had excellent experiences buying (and selling) secondhand. I think one thing that needs to be mentioned is about choosing a seller you trust. I don't know how to put it delicately, but we look for cultural similarities in the people we trade with. It isn't failsafe, but it does take some variables out of the equation when doing business with strangers in an economy with relatively few safeguards.

I have just left ADCB. Horrible service. They apparently wanted me to fill out a customer survey but "couldn't reach me" (no phone, email or postal contact received) so they froze my accounts. The only way to deal with it, they said, was to visit a branch. I did so and asked to fill out the survey and they said I couldn't. Because I'd been married, they needed me to sign up as a new customer and transfer my accounts to the new customer record. After five years with them to be treated like that was despicable. I told them I'd be signing up as a new customer at a different bank and did. ETA: it's not just a process that went wrong either, it's the way they dealt with it and their administrative issues right to the core. They would promise feedback or action and not deliver. They would give themselves deadlines and not respond. They would fail to communicate with each other or keep records of progress on the issues. They wouldn't follow up, they would close customer query files saying issues were resolved before even making initial contact with me (or investigating, let alone resolving, the problem). They also say whatever they can to fob you off. I was even told outright untruths by the manager of ADCB's MOE branch. He said I'd receive a clearance letter in three days, when the bank's policy is no sooner than 45 days. I even had to involve the UAE Central Bank's investigations department when they took too much money from my account to close my credit card then said they would forward me a cheque for a refund, then suddenly had no record of owing me the money. I constantly asked for assurances in writing and was told these were not possible, and urged to "trust them" (which has amounted to months of nightmares!). I feel very strongly about ADCB's ineptitude! My advice? If you come from a western home country with expectations of a western banking system, join an international bank with international procedures. Do not join a bank that only operates in the UAE. edited by explo on 12/05/2014

As written on your previous post: The best thing about buying secondhand in Dubai is that the RTA does a full vehicle check as part of the registration transfer process (at cost to the seller) so you won't be landed with a hidden defect. We recently sold my car and they found an oil leak we didn't know was there so they failed it, I got it repaired and the buyer wasn't left having to deal with it. I was mortified, but glad I had the chance to fix it. Dubizzle is fine for private sales this way. Follow your gut though, if someone sounds dodgy, or it doesn't feel legitimate then back out. I've always gone private. Sellers will reasonably want cash however, unless you have a bank cheque, but it sounds like you aren't getting a loan. Don't hand it over until you are at the RTA, they will guide you through the process. It's worth paying VIP at the RTA too, (I think it's about 100dh) the seller should pay this, though if they don't want to you could offer to split it.

FaceTime is not enabled on any official UAE-market devices (i.e. ones bought from Etisalat or Du), but there's nothing stopping it working within the UAE if you already have it on your iPhone or iPad. You can buy it to run on your Mac as well. And if you know about the evasi0n jailbreak, you can make it magically appear on UAE-market devices too :) edited by Madge_Gustard on 10/05/2014 Great to know, thanks Madge!
