Thanks Greenish. I actually looked in New Look the other day but didn't see anything. Might go back and have a second go. It was so crowded, perhaps I missed the hanger. They have to be somewhere here! I see plenty of girls wearing them (I thought perhaps they were last season's since I can't find them anywhere). Perhaps I should put on my Big Girl Pants and start accosting people and ask them, LOL. Just don't want to appear to stalker-ish! Thanks for the lead.

Late in, you've probably gone somewhere by now, but I use Janice at Hairworks in Ibn Battuta (next to Lime Tree Cafe) and she seems to have a really intuitive sense of colour and will work it in so it's not so obvious as it grows out. Been very happy with her work.

Iamam and Vercrj I'm very sorry for what your sons and your family have been through. That is horrendous. I hope you all find some way to overcome it in time. Perhaps to try and regain some power and control in the situation you should make a formal complaint to the school board and/or KHDA so it does not happen again to anyone else's child. Best wishes to you both.

There are heaps around. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding one. I have seen them recently at Ace, Geant and only last week at the new Union Co-op in Al Barsha.

I don't get it. Can someone please enlighten me on the attraction of Juicy Couture? So many people here seem to be into this label, but certainly not in my home country. Aren't they just tracksuits with sparkles? How are they better than any other tracksuit or lounge wear? Is it just the bling? I saw an overly plump lady wearing a bright pink suit a size too small with high high heels the other day. It looked seriously bad to the point of embarrassing. I wondered why she was such a slave to fashion when it actually detracted from her looks. Clearly the label is highly desirable to some. Serious question from the fashionably (or maybe athletically) challenged.

No...no surprise. She was a ticking bomb. Very sad though, she had a beautiful voice when she was well and so vibrant when she was young and not drug addled. How old is her child now?

... my only advice would be that please please put all passengers in a car seat, especially the children and if possible a booster seat. Thanks, but not necessary. I would never compromise my kids' safety (or anyone else's for that matter). If they can't use the booster and the safe fit, we won't be going.

Thanks for this thread. Have family coming and was thinking of taking them on one of these, so this is very timely. Can I ask - would they fit 6 people in one car? Would be 4 adults, 2 kids (and one child is still in a booster seat).

We leave our water heaters turned off in 2 of our bathrooms as they don't really get used apart from washing hands. Other than that, I would only turn the water heaters or electricity switches for washer / dryer off if you are going away for a week or more. Reluctant to do it any more frequently than that for fear of the contracting and expanding of the heater might shorten it's life (we've had one go on us already in 6 months and were told they have a shelf life of 2 years!)

JMO but I think you should go. Jools Holland has such a rich musical history you might be surprised at how much you enjoy yourself. Take a listen to the piano solo in The The's song "Uncertain Smile" - that was him playing! He is amazing! Seriously one of my all time favourite pieces of music! This is it live, so not as well mixed as the studio version, but still fantastic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR2ImlS3v3c&feature=related

Oh sorry, I misread. I thought you meant the really big lake in the middle - behind Meadows 5, down around Meadows 6 and the Springs areas. That is 11 klms. Realise now I missed the number "1". Mea Culpa!

I for one will be very happy when it is built and they can get rid of those slimy men patrolling the pedestrian crossing. I watched someone's 15 year old daughter walk across that crossing the other day going to DBS as the patrol guy leered at her and then followed her with his eyes looking up and down her body as she strolled off into the distance. I will swear he was almost salivating. No focus whatsoever on the cars. I felt like honking and yelling at him but worried that the car in front might have thought I was honking at them.

Oh, stupid me! I've been looking for them in sealed jars amongst the pickles etc like we get them at home. Didn't think to check the fresh olive area. It's obvious to me now. Iwonder why none of the store managers pointed that out to me? Thank you all so much! Does anyone know how long they'd keep for when you buy them fresh like that and put them in a jar at home? Wondering how many I can get away with buying at once...

Cool, thanks ladies. Have been meaning to go to Global Village to get some of that Argan Oil. The Preserved lemons will probably be in the same pavillion. That recipe looks good Greenish. And it does sound easy! I might actually give it a try and make my own too, though as you say, you can't use them immediately. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Sorry, I've just scraped myself up off the floor... Are you saying that they have changed the name of Vegemite to "Australia" ? Are you serious??? Are you absolutely sure they have done this? This is not some PR stunt or early April Fools? First trying to turn it cheesy and now this??? I'm sorry, call it what you want, but anything other than Vegemite is UNpatriotic! Oh, and yes, *ahem* I totally agree about Fairybread *blush*. _______ scrap post, just saw it's till Australia Day only. Phew! _____________ edited by The Fairybread Thief on 23/01/2012

OK, so just wrapping this up (sorry for the pun) in case anyone else is looking for similar items in future. Popped into Mercato Mall a couple of days ago to check out Wrapt!, most of their paper was modern or single colour bold, but they did have one islamic style geometric print which I bought. What a fabulous shop though! The examples of their service/product were just exquisite! So thanks for the suggestion, I'm glad I found the shop in the overall scheme of things. So then I headed to Gallery One in Dubai Mall. They have some lovely arabic stylized paper - similar to their larger frames - Lady Fatima's Hand with henna tattoo, some Arabic geometric prints, but unfortunately all too big for what I was looking for which was a small repetitive pattern. So I think I will do the job with the Wrapt! paper and make that work. Thanks to all for your suggestions - through all of them I got to know a bit more about Dubai that I didn't know a week or so ago.

Appletiser - did you find your tissue salts? I was in Mercato Mall (checking out Wrapt as you suggested) and they sell them in the Aster Pharmacy there although I have a feeling they didn't stock above number 12. But it is new packaging since I last purchased them so perhaps the numbers have all changed around? Their phone number is 04-344-8333 if you want to call them and check. 38 DHMs per 80 tablets. edited by The Fairybread Thief on 23/01/2012

I have a school friend who's child was there last year. The way she describes it is positively Dickensian - a soul destroying atmosphere - your children would learn a lot, but there is no laughter or fun.

OK, a report back on the Creative Art Centre. You will find it just off Jumeirah Beach Road, almost opposite Choithrams on the south side of Town Centre (hope that makes sense). It is basically on the corner of 88st and 77B st in Jumeira 1 if you have a GPS. It was a let down where paper was concerned. They only had one design. It was gold with black calligraphy in both arabic and english, spelling the words happiness and health or something like that. The calligraphy was big - at least 3 inches long with lots of space in between words so not suitable for what I had in mind, but would make nice wrapping paper for a larger present for any occasion. Apart from this, they had some arabic artifacts nicely presented in shadow boxes, some lovely old maps of Persia and Arabia framed, water colour postcards, loose and framed, and various other framed paintings (none of which I particularly liked as they weren't really contemporary). They are having a sale on at the moment so if you happen to need a gift for someone overseas, one of the shadow boxes might be interesting for example. They also do custom framing in case you had your own things you wanted done. I think I will next look in Gallery One. I think I may have seen some gift wrap there a while back...

Is there a clause on your lease that says there is a renewal fee? It might be in the addendum section.

when is your contract up for renewal, the contract is automatically renewed at the same amount plus agreed increases by law, if you do not give notice. if you want to change the contract or leave you must give 90 days notice, and the same goes for the landlord. if he wants you out to move in, then he has to give you 12 months notice, and also the rera will tell him off for renting out the villa in the first place, so he is trying it on but then again a lot of them do. Do changes on the lease over-ride the above by-law? For example, if your lease says 8 weeks' notice, do you or the LL only have to give 8 weeks' notice and not the 90 days?

Yes, the lease does not say "non-renewable" but there's that clause that implies it's entirely up to the Landlord which worries me because we have had some issues with our landlord over the course of the tenancy, so I'm worried he might be vengeful and just ask us to leave for the sake of getting us out. It does say on the addendum that you have to pay a renewal fee plus a service charge so I guess the implication is that the tenant can renew. I guess we just wait and see what happens. Other than that, I take the lease to RERA and ask them what my rights are regarding renewing when it says it's at the LL's discretion. I just don't like surprises when it comes to big things like looking for a place to live. I would rather be in the driver's seat!!!

Thanks HP38. Unfortunately the lease is signed because we were told it was standard. Now I've read other comments on here, I'm thinking that the clause "Renewal of the Tenancy is at the discretion of the Landlord." is NOT standard because it suggests strongly that it is up to the LL whether you stay or go at the end of the first year and this contradicts previous advice regarding standard leases on here. So I guess my question still holds - if we wanted to remain in this property, would the LL still be able to tell us to go at the end of the first 12 months regardless of his justification because we have signed a lease with this clause in it?

My understanding from reading past theads on here was that: 1. with a standard lease in Dubai, it was the tenant's right to determine whether they wished to stay on in that tenancy for a second year, the Landlord could not force them to go. And; 2. that the landlord did not have the right to increase the rent until the conclusion of the second year in the property. Is that correct? I have just read the following clause in my lease, which I was told at the time was a standard lease: [i'> "Renewal of the Tenancy is at the discretion of the Landlord. If the Tenant does not renew the Tenancy on Expiry date he will have to pay the rent as demanded." [/i'> So, I guess my questions are: 1. Is this an abnormal clause and NOT the same as for a standard lease in Dubai? And; 2. Does this mean even if we want to take on a second year at these premises, the Landlord could chuck us out given the appropriate amount of notice? Thanks for your input.

What a good idea! We have grandparents arriving for the first time in a couple of months. Might talk to DH about doing this for them. Is Ahlan expensive, does anyone know? OK, now seen the prices - AED160 per adult for premium service How exactly do they help someone through immigration? And what is the purpose of their lounge? Do their clients actually get to rest in the lounge while they go get the visas stamped etc? I would have thought the person had to be present for that part of it. What a bummer they don't also have a driver to bring them home. http://ahlan-dia.com/Services.aspx?Id=1 edited by The Fairybread Thief on 15/01/2012

Yeah, but you don't necessarily get songs that are motivational to you. It's like those mixed CD's there's always chaff with the wheat because the record companies are trying to promote other less popular artists or just trying to fill the album with less expensive acts... I prefer to pick my own but that's just me.
