basil, thanks for the agent and CBD area info. Someone told me that the KitchenAid Mixer in Australia was $800! But then again, I've noticed that people advise others to buy everything in Australia before coming to Dubai and the other way around, so I I'm a little confused. I guess I'll just buy anything that looks like good value here and get the rest down there. Does anyone know of good DSS deals? Yes, from my recollection that would be correct. And remember that is after tax money so pre-tax earnings of getting up to $1,200 would be required to purchase. We were surprised when we moved here how cheap many of the electrical goods are, but then Dubai is closer to everywhere than Australia, so you don't have the same costs involved in shipping and distribution around the country.

Tell him to think about the competencies, skills, knowledge required for the job and to phrase his answer in that context... For example, if the job requires attention to detail, then think of some examples in his life where he has demonstrated that skill. If it requires resourcefulness, problem solving, customer service attitude, etc etc same same. He needs to go through the job description and identify the skills, knowledge and attitudes the employer is looking for then sit back, think about his life - both professional and private - and have stories ready to tell where he has demonstrated those factors.

LOL You will find weekend are family time for most people here (from my experience anyway). How old are your kids, will they be at school next year? I have made some amazing friends through school as well - from all different nationalities - such an opportunity to learn about people from different cultures! But you need to take a risk, step out and talk to people. Once you've braved the first step, hopefully the rest will follow. edited by The Fairybread Thief on 15/06/2012

I bought a pair of great shoes from Naturaliser the other day. I haven't even had to wear them in, they are so comfy. Good quality leather, wide toes and soft heels. I went to the shop opposite Carrefour but I think there's also one at Ibn Battuta, and perhaps elsewhere, I don't know.

Thanks everyone! I just got back! Success!!!! :-D You were all right, I just needed the receipt, they didn't even ask for the passports or passport copy! Now... finding the Media City Post Office was a whole other story, LOL. In case anyone needs to know it is in Block 8 which is a small building behind buildings 12 and 13 in Knowledge Village, NOT Media City! You can actually park in a vacant lot right behind if you drive down the road past Block 12 (the ID / Immigration Centre) and turn left when you reach the roundabout in front of the Dubai Pearl construction site. You will need to go off-road into the vacant lot, but there is plenty of space and it's free. Then you just walk through the doors that open up onto a square with a cafe iin the middle (on your left if you are looking towards Block 12). Block 8 is then 90 degrees to your right. Hope this makes sense and helps someone in the future. TSI I can't believe what they've put you through for want of a receipt!!! OMG, the frustration!

Just got a letter from our health insurance provider (we have suspended it while here). We have family cover (2 ad, 2 kids) and it is going up to $398 per month from April for Hospital Value cover with $250 excess. And this includes the federal government rebate on private health insurance which is $170.60 or 30% of the value of the cover)!!!! Be aware there are waiting periods for many of the benefits if you are a new member. You may be better off just putting the money aside into a high interest account in case you need it for a medical emergency!

No, when you filled out the original application form, it would have asked you which Post Office you would like to collect from (you probably would have selected the one that your PO box is in) :D So for example if it is Jumeirah (Al Wasl Road) go in and the ID card collection point is on the left hand side, just hand over the form and ít will be there. I filled in 4 application forms at the Typing Centre yesterday and it didn't give you an option for [i'>which [/i'>Post Office just whether you wanted it delievered to PO Box or Post Office. Haven't been to the ID Office yet - do they give you an option for [i'>which [/i'>Post Office there? I am thinking it's got to be either Karama or Media City (which is closest to home but does it actually exist?). Am wondering what's easier for parking... Oh and then this morning DH got an sms for an appointment late August and I got one for late September!

Agent reckons they going in in next few months but I guess a risk if they do not The first lesson when moving to Dubai is do not believe anything the Agent says is promised to you. Sometimes the agent will be outright lying, sometimes the developer/management/Landlord will simply change their minds. Witness all the people on the Palm who thought they were signing up for private beaches, gyms in their buildings, swimming pool access. Now many are having to pay to access these facilities every time they go. The gym in a friend's apartment on Shoreline simply disappeared overnight last weekend, without so much as a notice on the wall, let alone letters to the residents. And how long did the Jumeirah Islands community have to wait for their promised "Clubhouse"? Even with villas, if an agent tells you x, y, z will be fixed before you move in, do not presume that will happen. It certainly did not with us. You need to treat each place you review with no expectations - what you see is what you get. edited by The Fairybread Thief on 19/04/2012

I think it's around section GB or HB where there are quite a few wallpaper shops. They have a good selection too - some very modern stuff and quite reasonably priced. They also sell the paste you will need. You will be asked to pay by the [u'>square [/u'>metre so just go with your wall measurements in mind. This can be a little confusing - if you say for example you want 4 m of a particular roll, you won't get charged for 4 metres, you will be charged 4 metres x whatever the depth of the roll is, so if the roll is 2 metres wide, you will be charged for 8 metres of paper. I don't think I'd be wanting to drag rolls of paper home on the bus, so maybe plan a bus to get there then get a taxi home. But I'm not sure how readily available taxi's are out there as it's a fair way from the city.

S&D, as you know we are in Meadows, so maybe not applicable. We have a study on the ground floor which has it's own bathroom - shower in bath, sink, loo and bidet. I'm not sure about the Springs villas, but that is how ours works.

We are still paid in AUDs and pay tax in Australia, so for us, it's for the life experience and having the opportunity for both us and our kids to mix with people from other cultures and backgrounds. Yes, Australia is lovely, but it can be quite parochial as it is so distant from the rest of the world. For example: Muslims have got a lot of bad press in Australia over the last few years, so one of my prime reasons for coming here was to enable our kids to learn that just because someone is from another religion or culture it doesn't mean they don't want the same things as we do, feel the same way as we do etc. In Australia, their school is pretty much pure WASP. Over here they have friends from all over the world and I love that. There are kids across 78 different countries in their school now. I hope that it will mean as they grow up they won't necessarily take the generalisations, stereotyping and dramatics of the media as gospel and instead think for themselves about the people they have met along the path of their life and judge people on their own experiences of them.

Personally, I'm not sure whether it's the brand that's important, but how the BBQ is made and from what materials. Things I've learned from doing 2 BBQ cooking course: 1. The proper heavy steel grills cook better than those light metal/aluminium ones you see on most BBQs at ACE. They distribute the heat more easily and meat will not broil. 2. The more burners the better - for greater control and a more even distribution of heat. 3. A hood is awesome - you can then roast meats, make damper, bake vegetables etc etc. I miss my BBQ so much *sob*. Have not seen one here I am prepared to buy.

Burger Rings - pretty sure I got some of those from Dubai Garden Centre at Christmas too. Norak - haven't been there for a while, but yes, there is a small section of specialist "gourmet" groceries, mostly Australian produce.

Yum...Twisties... I bought some at Christmas from the Dubai Garden Centre, so you could try there. Never seen Cheezels anywhere. Other than that, Milk and Honey stock some decent Aussie produce. Whether that extends to Twisties n Cheezels I don't know. Oh, just read last post...yes, try M & H.

Embo is right. Pop down to the Daiso store in Al Barsha Mall - 5 mins drive from you and you will find some there in the sewing section though I'm not sure what the widest pack would be.

Hip adductions and abductions on the machine at the gym, Embo. Or you could buy yourself some ankle weights (bought some from Sun, Sport, Sand the other day for about 40 dhms) and do a range of floor exercises at home.

OK, thanks everyone. It sounds like DH has not done his homework. He was adamant it was Jeddah as his destination but told me it was in Jordan. I started to research today and found Jeddah was in Saudi. I think somehow he's got himself mixed up. Perhaps he meant Petra as it's the buildings cut into the rock that are attracting him. I will have to bounce back to DH and clarify exactly which he means - Petra or Jeddah. Very sorry to waste your time.

DH has suggested going there for a few days' break with our children (aged 10 and 6). I am assuming if we go, since it's in Saudi, I will need to wear an abaya. Will I also need a shayla? I am fairly obviously a western woman (light skin, light eyes, blondie/brown hair) in case that is relevant. Would 1 abaya last for 3 or 4 days or would I need several ie do I need to treat them as I would normal clothes or is it more like wearing a coat? Is Jeddah an interesting city for tourists? What has been your experience and would you recommend it? Many thanks for your input.

Dubai Garden Centre has several machines on sale. Whether they are big enough to handle the pressure of retail, I don't know as I have not looked at them that closely. Perhaps give them a call before you head out there to eliminate them if they are only domestic ones. If you find a good place, would you mind letting us know? Ours has just started giving us electric shocks! It is off with an electrician but so far they haven't been able to find a short. DH says maybe the motor has burnt out but I don't know why that would make it " live". In any case, we may be in the market for a new one soon as I cannot put up with having to do the Starbucks run for DH every morning and afternoon for too long!

You may want to go out today if you can, as there is a severe weather warning out for Monday and Tuesday.Very strong winds expected, increasing to 30 knots with 10 ft seas on Monday, and 45+ knots with 20 ft seas by Tuesday. Local sailing clubs are advising all members to check their boat moorings, and remove anything liable to blow away. Wouldn't be too quick to completely mop the house - at least that's my excuse anyway :) Cr@p. Not this week! I need to wash big things and put them on the line! That will teach me to procrastinate. And yes, I would LOVE some rain. Everything's gone pastel from the dust. I'm not partial to pastels :-/.

I have my eyebrows tattooed (but didn't get them done here). You would be lucky to get 2 years out of it. They fade very quickly so be prepared to get touch-ups regularly. If you are fair, you need to be very careful about the colour she uses too as with age, some browns will turn orange, so make sure your artist knows the dynamics of the colouring. Ask a lot of questions before you jump in and get them done.

Thank you! Will do :) Has anyone been to the Open Market at Times Square yet? I believe it's an alternative to the ARTE Souke and includes products made outside the UAE in the rest of the ME. The ARTE Souk is great, but the only art pieces I like there are the mixed media photo's but they are done by an expat lady and we're really looking for someone local. Wondering if that might be an option. I see it's on next Friday...
