Damn it. That's not good news then. Basically leaves us with Meadows 5 and 6 I think unless we are prepared to compromise on space or location. Thanks for that link Sam7. 2 community pools? Toga Party?? Gawd, haven't been to one of those in about 20 years! Can't imagine they'd be terribly debauched over here though *scratches chin*. Could be a good way to get to know your neighbours, LOL. edited by The Fairybread Thief on 04/01/2012

Oh, that's good, but as you suggest, you never know with these blokes, do you... Thinking of you both and hoping it all goes as smoothly as possible. Hmmm, that was what I was worried about - that the only 5 bedrooms were in the Meadows. Doesn't leave us with many options I think. How do you find living in Meadows 2? We looked at a villa there originally but it was so run down didn't consider it. The community itself looked ok though and I guess it's nice and close to SZ Rd.

Thanks October, that's a lovely offer, but I'm not in need of a rental yet. I still have 6 months to go where we are. But we are starting to talk about where our options are. We would like to stay in the central area around the big lake because we all love to ride our bikes adn I don't want to grapple with crossing the busy roads etc. So that leaves pretty well Meadows 5, 6, Springs 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 I think. Our PRO when we arrived told me there were no villas in Springs the size that we wanted (5 brms), so I'm just checking my facts as it doesn't leave us with many options if Springs is out... How are you doing? So very sorry to read about your MIL. How is your DH faring?

our puppy has had a tick already - and at 11 weeks old we can't 'doctor' her against them. That's from our garden in Meadows. Yikes, I'm in Meadows/Springs/Lakes area too. Better investigate anti-tick stuff next time I'm down in Town Centre...

1. Not have expectations of ppl as I will only be annoyed/ dissapointed and have myself to blame 2. To spend less time with ppl who use me and give nothing back I like Freckly's first 2 and think I will adopt those as my own too. Beyond that: 3. Getting fit and reaching my goal weight by mid year. 4. Less time on PC and more time fulfilling my creative side.

Where abouts are you guys living? Are your dogs out and about being walked in parks etc or are they picking up the ticks in your back yard? This is making me nervous!

I'm sorry to hear of your sad news Cheeky Monkey. I would echo what many of the others have said. Everyone grieves differently. My DH is a very logical person so seemed to cope with the loss better than I, but in hindsight, I think he was trying to be strong for me. Speaking to someone neutral is a good idea. We didn't have this opportunity and regret it now as the platitudes from family really hurt at the time - in their defence, there's no way they could understand how you feel when they haven't experienced such a loss themselves. It's a loss of innocence and hope. I had always thought pregnancy was a pretty straightforward exercise. For so many it's not and I found support in my girlfriends who had also experienced miscarriages. But the boys don't talk, do they, so you might have to push him towards a counsellor perhaps? My period returned pretty much on 4 weeks with all my miscarriages. But I was always a clockwork kind of girl. Thinking of you at this sad time and sending prayers to your little angel.

Not according to this http://gulfnews.com/business/property/uae/failure-to-register-rent-contract-will-result-in-fines-for-tenants-1.957466 Cool! Looks like they are changing the process from 2012. Quote from article: "The decision is effective on every new contract to be signed in 2012; however, Rera is prepared to allow individual tenants with existing contracts to wait until these are due for renewal before seeking registration," Bin Ghulaita added. " Our LL / REA has not registered ours and I was told at RERA that I could not do it, but that it would not impact on our ability to take our complaint to the Rent Committee. Looks like in future though, if the lease is not registered, you may not gain access to these services. Thanks for the update, I had not seen that article.

Is there a good place to view the fireworks around the Burj but from a distance so you are not caught up in the chaos? I too have young kids and keeping them out all afternoon till past midnight (assuming the fireworks go off here at midnight) just doesn't seem possible.

Hmm, OK, well I can say where I haven't seen them, LOL. Not the Blue Souq, not MoE, not Dragonmart, not the souq under Wafi or the souq across from Dubai Mall. Probably not much of a help, but it might at least eliminate some places...

Simples, there's a chess board with pieces carved out of camel bone in that eclectic shop opposite Tavola in Town Centre. Not sure if that's what you mean by "camel pieces". It's quite expensive though. If you're looking for chessmen in the shapes of camels, I haven't seen one in my travels and I've been checking out chess sets since we arrived here.

Aroha, keeping my fingers crossed that it all works out in time and another villa pops up. It doesn't sound like that LL is particularly cooperative. Glenffidich: very sorry to hear the upshot of your story. I had hoped by now the LL had come to his senses and realised he was a victim of a scam artist as much as you were. edited by The Fairybread Thief on 19/12/2011

You're a good mum. What a lot of rigmarole though! I haven't bought the DEET repellent yet. Did you find that easily? I am concerned I may only be able to get it in aerosol form and aerosols aren't allowed on the plane... Just found out today it's been raining steadily where we're going, so presumably the mosquitoes will be out and about :-/.

8-O OK, so this is what I was told by our GP (who seems to know his stuff)... the American Hospital has them, but they will only give them to you when prescribed by one of their doctors - he has had patients rejected from there before. His clinic is affiliated with the City Hospital so I don't know whether that helped, but I had no trouble getting them from City Hospital and there was no mention of whether or not he was connected to them. They cost us nothing via SAICO insurance. 1200 DHS is a significant add on cost to a trip! Ouch!!!!

YEs, malaria tablets are a must as we are going to a high risk area. Dr prescribed Malarone and we collected it the following day from the City Hospital Pharmacy. No charge... all on our insurance. Probably cheaper for them to provide us with the tablets than ship us home if we catch it ;-).

Crikey, I am spending a lot more than 500AED a week on food for a family of 4! I'd be lucky to get out of the week without spending 1,200 I reckon! Might start paying more attention. It's the meat I find most expensive. And I am starting to cut back in this area and find alternatives.

I read an article (I think in Gulf news) about whole buildings being threatened with having their electricity and water cut off because certain landlords were in arrears with DEWA. THe comments suggested it had affected people on the Palm, Silicon Oasis and Interenational Village. It seems their only saving grace this time, was the security guards who begged DEWA not to cut off yet until the building management had contacted the landlords. But the up shot was that even if other tenant's landlords had paid, they would still lose access to their facilities because of the number who hadn't. Now this.... There has to be a better way of managing these buidlings in accordance with tenants' rights.

Yeah, I've heard about this. But what do you do in the following scenario: Your kids are at school. You and your DH have decided to meet up for lunch to celebrate a special occasion. On the way back from lunch, you are involved in an horrific accident on SZ Rd. You are both taken to hospital, unconscious and totally unable to communicate to anyone about collecting your children from school let alone pass on any passwords. What happens then? Who do people have as their emergency contact for their children's school out here when you have no family with you?

He probably doesn't even know what or when Christmas is! Lol True, why would he? Because he buys food and drinks from Spinneys who are playing Christmas Music, have Christmas decorations up and selling Christmas food. Because he works in an expat community where people are putting fairy lights up, wreaths on their doors and Christmas trees in their windows. And finally because he was talking about it with me yesterday. He may not have had the same opportunities as you or I, he may not be as educated as you or I, but he is trying to make something of himself and he is not stupid. He observes what is going on around him and he talks to people.

He probably doesn't even know what or when Christmas is! Lol That's pretty offensive. Were you trying to be funny? I never said I wanted to make sure it's a Christmas Bonus. It's just that time of the year when you think about the people who have added value to your life. I can just as well call it a New Year's gift. It makes no difference to me, I'm not a raging Christian. I won't be in this villa next Eid. I will have moved on.

You were all so helpful in answering my question about Hairdressers and tips, I have another Dubai ettiquette question: Do you give your Gardener a Christmas bonus and if so, how much? Did you give him an Eid bonus? That seems more logical if he is a Muslim. edited by AnonDubai on 06/12/2011 Nope. Had only just arrived then so he'd only been with us a couple of weeks.

By the way, as a result of this thread, a couple of mates have asked me offline who the hairdresser was - it was Janice at Hairworks, next to The Lime Tree Cafe at Ibn Battuta. And if you mention that you got her recommendation from this forum (as I did) they give you a discount.

I told my 7 year old exactly what's been happening and what to do if it happened to him. No use hiding the truth. Same. Even went through scenarios that might be used: eg my 6 year old loves animals and will chat to anyone. If someone came to him and said, help, I've lost my puppy, 2 years ago, he probably would have followed to help look for the dog. I hope, based on some of the scenarios we've covered over the last 2 years, that these days he would not. That being said, my kids are never left without adult supervision anyway (as I know your DD isn't either Aroha). BUt you are right, they still need to know about these things. At the end of my most recent discussion, I tried to empower them by talking about strategies they could put into action if they did see something suspicious happenning down at Town Centre (for example). I think that helped them leave the discussion on a more positive note.

I only have a list of the banned companies: Mona Landscaping Shadow Landscaping Dreams Flowers Company Happy Garden landscaping Springs Collection Trading The memo from Emaar to residents of the Meadows said: "...This action is in line with our observations that staff from the above mentioned companies have carried out many acts of illegal nature, violating UAE regulations, community rules and security within the Emirates Living communities. The local authorities have been involved on many occasions, both by residents and the community security and several warnings as well as notificiations have been issued to the management of these companies; however their staff and management have still not complied iwth the terms of the community rules..."

Not sure if this has already been reported on here within the last week, but the following letter was forwarded to me this morning by a local friend. It is an email from the Principal of DBS to the parents dated last Monday. I thought I would post here to get maximum visibility as I know other schools in the vicinity of Meadows have not been so diligent in keeping their parent body informed. Kudos to Mark Ford. In addition, there is a letter to 7 Days this morning on the same topic: http://www.7days.ae/letter-detail/kids-need-know-what-do-around-strangers So it seems the preliminary incident where a teenage boy was approached outside the school (about 6 weeks ago) was not random. There was a note attached to this one which was personally signed by a parent so I did not feel comfortable publishing it, but it seems - via a conversation with the Headmaster - the Police are speculating that this is the work of an organised Child Abduction Ring from Eastern Europe. Keep your kids close, people. Date: Mon, 28 Nov 2011 18:41:12 +0400 Subject: Security: please be alert Dear Parents, Following my email at the end of last month, we have again received reports of children being approached by strangers in the vicinity of the school. We have been notified today that a female secondary school student was approached by man in a car at the end of last week. Fortunately a parent from our school was passing and escorted the girl to a group of friends. In addition, a primary pupil was approached by a Western woman in the ‘Town Centre’ complex today and asked to get into her car. Fortunately, his mum found him before anything more serious happened. Again, please be especially vigilant at this time and reinforce with your children that they should never get into a stranger’s car. Also, where ever possible, they should walk in groups. We will also be highlighting these issues once more in school assemblies and in the classroom. We are looking further into this and have once again alerted the police and Emaar security and they will be stepping up their presence in the area. Mark Ford Principal Dubai British School

OMG! That is frightful! I'm so sorry for your little cat. The groomer must have really manhandled her for that to happen and probably been hanging on to that leg while she tried to escape him. Terrible! I hope she recovers in time. She is lucky to have such a caring owner who took immediate action and took her to another vet.
