Whilst I agree with you 100% chezmoi, regarding information being given etc. People also need to take responsibility to research where they are going and to know the do's and don'ts - that should be standard practise for every traveller going anywhere. There's also a lot of misconception and lack of awareness about the UAE, you only have to read comments in some papers, to see that people clump it in with other ME countries and think that beheadings, stonings go on here, women are forced to be covered etc. So on the one side you have the UAE advertised as this glitzy and glamorous touritst destination, on the other people think it's Saudi. Go figure.

The courts should have a quick judicial process for tourists over something very minor like this matter. They've actually just announced, that the government are doing exactly that. Having a spsciel court to deal with tourists quickly, who find themselves in trouble. That's a good thing.

Well no surprise, the international, press has picked it up and the Dubai/UAE bashing is in full swing in their comments sections. And assaulting a police officer, is what happened to my cousin and ended his career! The whole thing is blown out of proportion.

Whilst I agree the tourist went overboard, there are other factors - language barrier etc. He was charged with assault and molestation - er someone needs to look up the definition of those, because he did neither. A fine and warning would have done. 6 months in jail is overkill. Gives a really bad impression of the UAE. Wait till this gets picked up. He shoved the male police officer that came over to help his colleague and then resisted arrest - wouldn't this be classed as assaulting a police officer in most countries? That would yes. But call me a cynic, but I don't believe half the details of these stories and remember we're only getting one side.

You will need export papers from the country you're leaving, import papers from Dubai. Their vaccination cards, recent rabies blood tests. IATA approved travel boxes. If you do a search, this topic has been covered extensively.

I remember dating a guy years ago who used to say of people: "You have a face for radio." I didn't care for this gal's voice from the first promo, and I now turn their show off where I used to listen frequently. Voice is very important in radio -- in my opinion. Face for radio means they aren't attractive  Yet that certainly isn't the case here for the majority lol Voice training and coaching isn't hard and most people could do with it. But that's where you can tell the ones that do all the voiceovers, they much more control and don't shout.

Voip services are banned and blocked in the UAE. You only have a choice of two service providers, DU or Etisalat - both government owned. If you have an ipnone you can use facetime and also skype, but for pc to pc calls. You need three letter device, which cannot be named here, to use voip.

But why do so many people have an issue with her accent? I'm surprised that in a place where you hear so many different English accents all day long that hers is a problem. Personally I don't mind it! Some accents are harder to listen to and understand than others. (sometimes I have to listen for a while before I can click into it) If you were in the UK and drove up and down the country, you'd get different accents depending where you are. However, somewhere like the UAE where the majority of the population don't speak English as their first language, it can be even harder to understand someone. Personally speaking, when it comes to broadcast, I prefer neutral accents - you can still tell which country someone comes from, but they don't have the extra local accent on top. But that's just me. edited by FairyDust on 22/04/2015

Pick either. So long as it's not the country you're travelling to, I think it would be fine. Interesting question. Never thought of that.

Well there's obviously quite a few local networks - ARN, Dubai Media, Gulf News Broadcasting, loads of local production companies. Many of the jobs don't get advertised locally, but on international media forums, or it goes round by word of mouth - the old 'who you know, not what you know' scenario. There are a few LinkedIn and FB groups for local media bods, might be worth taking a look for those.

I live in Remraam and you can hear the cars when they are racing, all the way over there. Also bear in mind that the Autodrome has been sanctioned as an F1 testing and practice track, so that might be coming in the not so distant future. Motorcity is really nice though. Lots of good little shops, coffee shops, takeaways. Sport city is close by. It's nice there.

It's recommended for all animals that fly to not have food 12 hours prior to the flight time! Just in case they get sick, as somebody mentioned, there's no way to clean the travel box during the flight, so just water is allowed. It's strange the cargo guys told you they get fed right before the flight! This was over a decade a go. I'm sure things have changed since then.

When I flew my animals with Emirates into Dubai, the cargo guys were excellent. They told me that they would be fed and watered before the flight, but could not have food during - in case they vomit. They did have a small attachable water bowl to their crates though. Good luck and I hope all goes well :)

What exactly is nasty about not liking her voice or finding it annoying? Nobody says she's not a nice person. For a radio personality a voice is of the utmost importance. If I was Chanel 92, I would want to know if people switch channels because they have a problem with my new morning person's voice. er because you employ someone for more than their voice? Their personality, the ability to be interesting and engaging. She's only been there a week and already you're crucifying her. Give the poor girl a chance. And the head of station wouldn't have employed her, if they didn't think she was up to the task.

I do wonder if people realise that their comments can be hurtful. Just because people are in the public eye, doesn't mean they don't have feelings. Would you like it if someone walked into your office and started pulling you apart - I think not. As the old saying goes 'if you have nothing nice to say - shush' and change the station. edited by FairyDust on 19/04/2015 That's nonsense. If you choose to be on the radio 5 days a week you can expect feedback. Both positive and negative. edited by Oopsiedaisy on 19/04/2015 It's not nonsense at all! There's 'constructive criticism' then there's just being nasty. No need for the latter. 'I don't like someone's voice' is not constructive - that's YOUR problem, not the presenters. That's like someone saying 'I don't like your face' - can you change it? Nope! edited by FairyDust on 19/04/2015

We used Virgin to fly our dog from UK to Dubai as we were told by the pet relocation company in the UK that they have someone check on the animals during the flight. Who on earth told you that? There's no way anyone goes into the hold during a flight. It's the reason airlines will not take animals that are sedated - because you can't get to them.

Geez so many moaners. Go on, have a pop at Radio 1, 2, Virgin and the rest of them. I do wonder if people realise that their comments can be hurtful. How do people manage to wash their hair just once a week? I go to the gym everyday so it has to be a daily hair wash for me :( organic shampoo and conditioner without the chemical nasties seems to help though .... and definitely the shower filter. After gym, let your hair dry and just use a dry shampoo, then wash every other day. Washing my hair too much destroys it.

I think people do it, until they escort the maid to the airport and see them on a flight out the country, or sponsorship is transferred to a new sponsor, because until that point, the sponsor, although the visa is cancelled is still technically responsible for them.

Yes in Al Quoz. About 3 years ago. My instructor was so nice. Once you start riding around the industrial estate though it can get a bit hairy. Just be aware that riding a motorbike here is not for the faint hearted and car drivers have zero respect for you as a road user. But it's a whole lotta fun :)

I did my motorbike lessons and test with Al Ahli - they were very good. You'll need to sign a waiver that you're happy to have a male instructor and you will be learning with mostly guys. I think the requirement is 30 lessons, broken down into 10's with an assessment after each 10, then the final road test. Also you obviously have to do the theory as well.

To add, you only have to see news stories from the last couple of years and see in general the nationalities maids are abused by, to understand why they would be wary of working for some people and want to steer clear. It's a really sad situation, but people have to understand, that how they treat their employees can be turned into a stereotype and be damaging for everyone else.

Best bet is to call the police at the traffic department and ask! I was told my father could drive my car whilst he visited. He is no longer a UAE resident, but still holds a UAE drivers license and the police said that was ok. So go figure. My husband also drove on his UAE license after his visa was cancelled with no issues.

I agree with Beebers here, in that given the issues you have I would let your partner come here first, work through the probation period, come and visit him with the children and then see how it goes. Things change here in a second and he or all of you might decide that it's not for you. Better to be apart for a few months and be sure, than to relocate and then decide the place, job etc is not for you. On the marriage front, it would be far easier for you to do it in the UK than to wait and do it here - bearing in mind that your partners company can do nothing about sponsoring you or the children until you are married and you can't hang about on visit visas given your current situation.

His major issue is going to be when he has a drink, he's going to want to smoke, as the two invariably go hand in hand. Most people I know who've quit completely and decided to be non-smokers have just gone cold turkey, which is possible when you put your mind to it.
