Hi marpar95, did you get your machine repaired? I'm in the same situation. In the middle of sewing my son's costume for halloween and the timing seems suddenly to be off. I can't fix it myself but it should be easy to repair for someone who deals with sewing machines.

Also have a look at Al Reef Villas behind the airport. That's where we are living. All nationalities mixed and house prices are a bit lower. We pay 170,000AED/year for a 5 bed with garden and pool. It's only 35min to the city center and 50 min to Dubai and only 10min from Yas Island. It's a nice development with an European atmosphere but you find Emiratis, Europeans, Americans and Aussies there. It's very well mixed and a perfect environment for families with kids as it is a huge enclosed community and the kids are playing on the road and in the park in the evenings together and all the maids are friends with each other and meet up with the kids int he afternoons. There are a lot of dog and cat owners and we have tennis court, communal pools and little gyms and this week two little shops are opening within the compound. It's definitely worth a visit and considering. But you definitely need 1-2 cars out there.

Hi gazelle. The agency helps you just to find someone. They don't really do anything else and charge you exorbitant fees and of course if you don't know where to start it's your only choice. We didn't have the best experience with agencies as they aren't really concerned about finding the right person for you and they don't allow to get in touch with the maid before the fees are paid. The only thing you know is about the person what's written in the short 1 page CV provided. Well, that's the experience we and some friends made. I would suggest to ask around in the neighborhood. Most maids here look to bring some family members over or know of someone who want to change families or who's contract is expiring soon. Look for someone who is already here, then you can arrange a face-to-face meeting. We met with 3 or 4 girls before we met the right one and now we are glad having done it this way because certain things look perfect on paper but it's different when you meet in person. An agency wouldn't compensate your fees and you would have to go through all the trouble again to find someone else. Tha's just my experience but I didn't see the point of an agency if there is other ways that are more convenient.

Hi, I also posted a general thread in the Abu Dhabi section but I'm desperate to find a nanny, so I thought I also look here. boysboysboys, is your nanny still available and would she be prepared to move to Abu Dhabi? We are a German/Irish family with a two year old boy.

Hi, I moved here 5 months ago with our almost 2 year old son. I'm working full time and live out near the airport in Al Reef, but I would be still interested in getting to know people, especially with young kids in my son's age group. It just makes meeting up more difficult.
