Hi, A group of us mums would love to go out dancing - perhaps to 80 and 90s music. I have heard of Societie but welcome other suggestions too please. TIA Sadly there aren't many decent places here which play decent music Societe is okay but fills up with drunken letches as the night goes on plus it is really smoky in there Yes I have head the same about societie ...thanks for the confirmation sarahlou123! There must be places where we can go dancing ... to songs we can sing along to would be an added bonus hehehe

How far will you be living from each of the houses? Which curriculum do you prefer for your kid(s) DIA and EIS both have IB for higher grades but RWA for different curriculum depending on the grades and back to IB for the grade 11 and 12.

Hi, I am in JVC... and in Mirabella ... been here for nearly 2 years. There is no district cooling here - and yes for the space you get for the money you pay, this is good. You need to see which Mirabella it is, as some have construction right outside your door. We have construction in front of our house but has been laying dormant for nearly a year now ... The downside of the Mirabella is that it is a "hot" house and doesnt cool off like other houses we have lived before. Other than that, I think the Mirabella houses are great, close to exist #2 to Al Khail road.

They talked on the radio recently that there had been a few incidents recently with tourists being attacked in Zanzibar, therefore the prices are quite low at the moment. It was on the travel show. Someone from Dubai had been attacked by a gang with machetes. Check with a pediatrician as well if they think it's safe to bring a small child there, as there is malaria in the area. Thank you for this. Will dig more info.

It all depends on the curriculum you want your child to be in. One is a 12 years school program and the other is 13 years school program. What a KG-2 kid learns in a 12-years school program will be the same as what a Grade 1 kid learn in a 13 years school program. English curriculum is based on 13 years school program. FS1 = Pre-KG in a 12 years school program. I am surprise that the teacher said so - maybe she was trying to say, that RIS is not a good school?!?!

We lived in the same house for 4 years, and had to move out at the end of last month 2014. Our landlord’s representative (landlord doesnt reside in UAE) gave us notice a year ago upon contract renewal as he was going to use the villa for personal use from July onwards. He put a non renewable clause in the contract and made us sign a paper that we would move out in 2014. We moved out 3 weeks ago but have now found out that he has rented the villa out again for a much higher rent to another family. (the reason why he wanted us out in the first place it seems now). In our case, he never once informed he he wanted to have XYZ amount for rent increase. Has anyone taken their ex landlord to court as I read they can't rerent the place in the first 2 years and what kind of court fee can we expect? Rowellian if you are reading this, would you recommend us to go thru the hassle you went thru? TIA

I went to Goa earlier in the year and spent 7 days of Yoga, and Ayurveda massages and treatments. Here is the link to the place: http://www.ayurvedagram.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ayurvedagram?fref=ts I loved it - I didn't go out of the area, cause all i wanted was to "chill out" and enjoy the quitness, calmness that the place offers. Dr. Manu and his staff were brilliant and all the massages and yoga classes offered by Guru Mohanty was great. (I loved the outdoor yoga sessions the most). I came back and felt totally refreshed, my chakras were aligned (and apparently it showed on my face too how relaxed, calm and refreshed I was). The food offered was all South Indian dishes - vegetarian. At first I didn't think I would like it seeing that I am not much of Indian cuisine lover, but it was totally different and I didn't miss eating meat at all! I would love to return to this place, and perhaps next time go for the detox option. Many European guests come there to detox earlier in the year. Note this place is 'not'a luxury hotel, it is actually registered as a hospital, but no way you felt you were in a hospital :) If you need more info, happy to help you - just email me to chiquitabanana29 at gmail.com

Although the LL (actually the greedy agency) wanted to sell the property last year, just checked the tenancy contract and it says RENEWABLE but "NOT NEGOTIABLE" Sorry for the panic but I am glad we double checked the contract just to make sure we will not be evicted comes end of our contract. Happy days! I find this confusing. The tenancy law clearly states that a tenant can only be made to move out under strictly defined circumstances, ie landlord moving in, villa being knocked down etc. and that the landlord must give 12 months minimum notice. If the landlord does not have a valid reason for you to leave, then on what basis can he issue a non renewable contract, if your contract to date has always been renewable? The way I read it, is that the landlord must give you the correct notice as required by law, and then on renewal ie the start of the 12 month notice period, he can issue a non renewable contract. There are no other circumstances under which you contract can be altered, right or wrong?? Technically, yes, the landlord should have delivered a letter by registered mail/notary public stating that he was giving 12 months' notice (with reason), as well as a non-renewable contract. But Flower_girl was aware of his intention to "sell" when signing the non-renewable contract because she had already demanded 12 months' notice from her landlord. She could appeal to the Rent Committee on the technicality that she wasn't given 12 months' written notice, only a non-renewable contract, but I honestly don't know where she would stand under these circumstances. It would depend on the individual scenario for me. If I knew he didn't really want to sell and was just looking to increase the rent, I'd do everything in my power to stay. But if he genuinely is looking to sell, I would move on as he gave the additional 12 months that was requested the last time.

Sorry to hijack this thread ... but am now "confused". Last year we got "told" they wanted to sell the villa we live in with 6 weeks notice ... so in the end we got to renew the contract, with no written notice from them about the 12 months notice BUT a standard contract with "non renewable" part mentioned. Reading from below, I am now worried that come in May when we are to give our 60 days notice (as per contract) we won't be able too. Can someone shed some light what our situation will be please .... TIA

Baros Maldives... It was surreal how beautiful that resort was, and the service was excellent. It only has 2 or 3 restaurants but the food was great. Not good for children but more for a romantic getaway for couples. totally agree with newmom83 - snorkling around the island and dive right outside your room....

With regard the 12 month notice, does anyone know if the LL can give this at any point or does it have to be done at the expiry of the current contract? My understanding on this matter is that the 12 months notice will take place STARTING on the new contract - eg. your rent starts March 2013 but landlord gives you notice on 1 Dec 2012 - the 12 months will start only from March 2013. The written notice MUST be a registered mail too - and not an email or just a piece of paper handed over....

It is not about the company - they are somehow 'related' companies and provide same service. It is about he MAID you will hire. I changed 4 maids within 9 months, and Inshallah, this last one (the 4th) will remain LONG TIME with us :) Just make sure you get to interview the maids as soon as they are finish with their training - so you'll have a better 'option' of maids. Good luck!

TSI - Can't help you for timings - DH takes him to nursery and I head out to office on my own time. Food wise, I usually give my DS either sandwhiches for his lunch or a pre-cooked meal already in boxes which I leave in the fridge the night before and once at nursery they will heat it up for you, if required.

Hi, I am planning to organise an iftar some the labourers working close to our community. I don't however know how to start. To begin with, which catering company should I contact to provide Iftar food and what is the normal cost of such a 'package' per person? If any of you have organise Iftar for labourers before, please share the process and contact details. Thank you and an advance Ramdan Kareem.

Perhaps it was because a 3D type of cinema ... but he was 'scared' cause it was dark and sound was loud he said .... For first timers maybe best to do a normal 2D movie instead of 3D .... will try again in a years time i think :)

IB v A level has been an argument for a long time. I do not believe that one is better than the other as a generalisation, I DO BELIEVE that one might suit a particular and individual student more than another. Both are globally recognised by universities and employers so IMHO it comes down to what is right for the individual student in question. The IB offers a breadth of curriculum that allows students to keep their pathway at university or career goals wide open, to maximise their learning in multiple subject areas by picking one subject from each area (1 maths, 2 english, 3 a further language, 4 humanities, 5 science and 6 arts). The IB core elements of TOK, EE and CAS extend the students outside of the classroom and give them an opportunity, whilst managed by the school as it is a requirement of the IB, to get involved in worthwhile activities that allow development of skills outside of the curriculum. This can only be a good thing. The IB works for students who are all rounders, hard working and still interested in many areas of study and is a very demanding and rigourous course. However it has its limitations; as the student is forced to pick a subject from groups 1-6 with the only allowance being that you can drop an arts subject and substitute it with an extra science or humanities this means that students who want to specialise early on in sixth form cannot do so. Finally the IB is an umbrella qualification: 'if you fail one part you fail the diploma'. This effectively means that students who excel in a number of subject areas but fail another could be at risk of failing the Diploma and this is a huge risk....as I said it is a rigourous course over 2 years and requires the student to be focused and very determined throughout. Having said all of that the universities know this too and undestand the strength of the programme and how hard it is, which is why UCAS allocates so many points on the UCAS tariff to the IB. A Levels on the other hand offer an opportunity to specialise in 3 to 4 (and rarely but occassionally 5) subjects in sixth form without any core element requirement. This means that if a student hates languages, sciences, Maths or English they do not need to do it. A Levels allow students to select individual subjects even if they are all similar. For example Art, Design Technology and Media, or Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Maths. If a student wishes to do this the A Level programme will allow this as each A Level is a stand alone subject. If a student passes two, three or four of their A Levels in each individual subject, even if they failed another one, they will still have obtained A Level qualifications in the subjects passed. In addition sixth form students studying A Levels can complete year 12 and take their AS Exams as a qualification in their own right, therefore being given the option to leave school with qualifications, which as a two year final exam programme the IB does not offer. The disadvantage of this is that the student, at a very young age, could be narrowing their future choices as taking subjects in the same or similar curriculum area will limit their university choices and career paths. However, one element of the A Level that universities and employers like is that A Level students are NOT required to do any extracurricular activities but can if they wish get involved in activities outside of school such as D of E, work experience and many other things. which the majority do. The advantage of the A Level programme is that students are not assessed on this extra curricular involvement (as they are for the IB Core) as it is not part of their overall grade and is not compulsory but elective. Therefore when students do choose to do this, universities and employers respect that they have taken the initiative and been involved in something that they were not forced to do by the school or by parents. A Levels offer students a freedom of choice that the IB does not, A level students are not forced to commit to a curriculum that they have no interest in but are encouraged to play to their strenghts. Again A Levels are not an easy option and require a different type of learner to the IB, but each A Level requires commitment, focus and motivation if that top grade is to be achieved. Sorry for such a long post but felt I had to do it as been in the same boat. I hope this has helped any parents out their who are in the difficult process of choosing which curriculum is better. I honestly do believe that one is not better than the other, IMHO it really is about what best fits the student / individual in question. FINAL WORD. Both the IB and A Levels are acknowledged and accepted by Universities globally and by Employers globally as outstanding school leaver (sixth form) qualifications! WOW - thank you for this! Great feedback on both curriculum!!
