As long as they can cut European hair, I don't care what their nationality is. (although I do understand that some nationalities hair is harder to cut than others). My colleague knows of a British mobile lady who covers Mirdif. I am just waiting for her details then will post Her name is Maureen and she lives in Mirdiff 050 5353382. Maureen is a great hairdresser and very popular. In fact when the time comes to start colouring my hair I would have her do it as she is brilliant at colour, especially blonde - I have friends who use her and their hair looks completely natural and in good condition.

This is not meant a negative comment I'm genuinely interested to know... Are there grown up ladies here who are attending the 1D concert? I thought they were of a tween sensation. I know a few people who are taking 4 and 5 year olds to the concert... the mind boggles! Well at least mine does anyway...

Hi, Do xpressmaids bring their own cleaning products i.e. vacuum? Thanks I don't know as I am 100% certain that my friend would only have used her own cleaning products regardless of whether they supplied them or not. I do know that whenever she called them to rearrange times/ dates they were always very accommodating and helpful so perhaps you can call them and ask.

Has anyone tried XpressMaids before. Wanted to know before I try them out ? Thanks in advance. A friend of mine used them on a part time basis for several weeks whilst looking for a new maid; she was very happy with them as they sent the same woman every time. Once she found a new maid she was able to cancel the service with 48 hours notice. I think they have a minimum of 3 hours hire.

I have eaten at Lambs restaurant on Sheep street quite a few times - it is in one of the oldest buildings in Stratford. It is full if character and the food is good - it gets really busy so it is best to book in advance.

The only piece of furniture I bought there was a couch as I had spent months looking for one and it was exactly what I was looking for. After 9 years it is still looking good and it is the most comfy couch I have ever sat on - all my visitors say the same. In fact when my brother and his wife were looking for a new one their main criteria was that it should be as comfortable as mine. So it's a thumbs up from me for Home Centre. Forgot to say that the price was very reasonable as well.

In the 24 years I have been here I have had three accidents - all caused by the other driver and all of them Emirati. In each case they got the ticket and I was in the clear. Two were straight forward as I was rear ended whilst stationary ( in a traffic jam and at a red traffic light). The other was more complicated as a car shot across my path at speed from the right hand road entering a roundabout as I was driving straight for the middle exit. I had no way to avoid him but by braking hard and slightly swerving I managed just to hit the rear side of his car rather than a full on crash. He was an Emirati and an Iman and we were the only two cars in sight so no witnesses. The policemen both only spoke Arabic ( this was in Al Ain) and the guy was insisting it was my fault as I hit him. He still got the ticket and not only that he was made to wait at the police station whilst my car was checked and then give me the money in cash before he could leave as he lived in RAK. So in my experience the police here are very fair regardless of nationality.

In Marks & Spencers ( Wafi Mall) a few weeks back they had a large range of winter coats and jackets. Back in the UK they sell padded down filled jackets that are "storm proofed", they might have them here. They are not expensive and have generous sizing up to a 22/ 24. You could also try North Face ( Dubai Mall 1st floor next to Gallerie Lafayette) or there is another sports shop that sells winter gear on the ground floor ( also near Gallerie Lafayette more or less opposite where North Face is). North Face is more expensive but those types of jackets cost around £100 - 150 in the Noth Face UK stores so should not be 2000 aed here. The other shop ( sorry can't remember the name) also has very good sales - you might be lucky and catch them selling off the winter stock. edited by Genie on 23/02/2015

In the past I have seen them in the music shop on the plaza level at Rimal 1, the musical instrument shop that is on the first level of DFC ( behind M & S if you take the walkway through to the hotels) and on a stall on the lower ground level at Dubai Mall. I have not been to any of those places recently but they may be worth checking out if they are not places you have already been to.

Sounds extortionate and strange that they burnt the bill. All hospitals and clinics have to display the price list of treatments in a public area where they can be seen - by order of the Dubai Department of Health. Some display them in reception ( you may have to ask to see the list) and some on their websites. So it may be worth your while to check. I think that is way overpriced. For instance a quick Google shows that the Neurospinal clinic charges 500 aed for suturing wounds up to 3cm ( which 3 sutures would be less than). Add on around 100 aed for local anesthetic ( if it was used) and even if it was 400 aed for the doctors fee that is still only around 1000 aed. I would go back and check their prices (and complain to the Department of Health as it seems way overpriced.) ETA - forgot to say that I suspect that the 500 aed for sutures includes the doctors fee (and maybe the local) so it possibly should only be around 500 aed - which sound more likely as it is a small quick procedure that would only use one packet of sutures! edited by Genie on 14/01/2015 edited by Genie on 14/01/2015

Anyone know where I can buy black clothes dye before I head to the shops. Thanks park and shop are the only place that sell Dylon but it is hit and miss if you can get black. The one on Al wasl is the best. Try and call them first In the past I have bought black Dylon dye at Spinneys, Al Maya and the haberdashery section at Magrudys - it has been a while since I bought any though so not sure if it still stocked by them but it might be worth checking. It was in the laundry section in the supermarkets.

My husband and I have been to SensAsia both on the Palm and at Emirates Golf Club -- you could have a drink outside afterward probably in either place. Genie -- the reason that some couples go for massage together is that it's the only (legal) way in the UAE for a man to have a female massage therapist and some men (my husband included) aren't comfortable with another man providing the massage, so it's a preferred option for them/him. Aah- that makes sense now - thank you.

Genuine question - what is the attraction of a couples massage as I have seen several threads requesting this? For me when I have a massage i like to totally zone out and hopefully even fall asleep, I would not want to be distracted by someone on an adjacent table chatting or oohing and aaghing or whatever. I would prefer somewhere like Cleopatra's that has both womens and mens facilities where you could have a simultaneous but separate massage and then go to one of the bars upstairs, Perhaps I am just not romantic enoiugh? to me a massage is totally chilled out me time - not to be disrupted by anybody ;)

I am glad to see that the majority of posters seem to be pro - vaccination. Over the course of a 34 year nursing career I saw plenty of people adversely affected by entirely preventable diseases; in the 1970's children permanently disabled by having respiratory / cardiac arrests from whooping cough and measles, then children that that died from the disease; babies born disabled to women who had contracted Varicella (chicken pox) during pregnancy, adults die from Varicella encephalitis (one a fairly young grandmother who caught it from her 3 year old grandchild sticks in my memory as particularly tragic). Because people no longer see how awful these diseases can be there seems to be a burgeoning complacency about them and people forget the only reason we do not see the high morbidity and mortality anymore is because of herd immunity - something the anti vaccine-rs will wipe out with their ignorance and complacency. Their complacency would vanish in a nanosecond if one of their loved ones ever developed the more serious consequences of these diseases. edited by Genie on 07/01/2015

I have been shipping books from the UK this way for several years now. I think initially I worked out the price and it worked out more or less the same as having them shipped directly. With the direct shipping you pay no VAT but I think the postage was more expensive than S&S so in the end it was more or less the same. However the reason I use S&S is that with the direct postal service, the postal service here lost the packages twice - they then turned up months later. Amazon were excellent and replaced and posted the lost items, at no cost me, immediately when I reported it and even told me to keep the originals when they eventually turned up, but who needs the hassle? S&S is much quicker and hassle free. I know that the Book Depository ships free worldwide but again you may have the local postage service to contend with. edited by Genie on 07/01/2015

Possibly old fashioned now but when I was a child left over roast beef was always made into a sandwich spread. It was minced with butter, onion, mustard or horseradish and then used as a sandwich filling. There are still quite a few recipes around for it - using a food processor now instead of a mincer they would definitely not be dry as most contain mayonnaise now like this one: http://housewifehowtos.com/cook/roast-beef-sandwich-spread/

I find the picture of that baby on the front seat pretty shocking. Who would leave a baby like that? You would not even leave them in that position if you were sat next to them! It would be so easy for them to slip back - head first - down into the footwell and damage their neck. God knows I have seen enough children injured from the simplest of accidents that have profound consequences and that looks like an accident about to happen. The mother must be a either a complete fool or suffering from some sort of mental health problems, not only to leave them unattended in the car but the baby in that position.

I wonder if rents and property prices are about to change with the fall in the oil price. Today was black Tuesday in the UAE stock exchanges. Emaar shares have dropped 40% this year and 14% has been wiped off the Dubai benchmark price in the last few days. The Russian rouble is in free fall and interest rates have just been raised there to 17% today. This will surely impact both tourism and inward investment, there may be investors looking to liquidate their assets here. I am no financial expert by any measure but I would say hang on and see what happens. Interesting times are afoot. edited by Genie on 16/12/2014

I have just come back from Melbourne and funnily enough there was a very popular salon near where I was staying - a sort of walk in nail bar place that was always busy -and 3 out of the 6 nail technicians were men. They seemed to have plenty of customers as it was always full. I suppose it is all a matter of perception and what you are used to.

If you live in Deira then a more direct route would be to get the metro to Rashidiya station. From there a taxi to Global village should take about 20 minutes along the E311 as it is a direct road from there to the Global village.

Hi We are thinking of moving to Australia, I have a year old daughter and husband who's an electrical engineer and I myself am a qualified pharmacist from uk. Ideally I want some where they have good schools, nice community, [b'>not too overpriced[/b'> for rent or activities and some where we can both work. I don't know where to start looking for the best place area to live! Does any one know where I can start to look? Or they can recommend a city. Would appreciate your help! Thanks You can rule out Sydney, it's mind boggling expensive. I've got a few friends who have well paid jobs but left Sydney as the cost of living is so high. One moved to Adelaide and loves it, housing is much more reasonable. I find the cost of living in Australia has gone up extraordinarily since I lived there and it is a very expensive place to live now. Although wages seem high they are negated by the cost of living. Melbourne is the same, really expensive, I go every 2 years and cannot get over how much things cost. In fact I am off there again in a few days time but am happy to see that the exchange rate is slightly better this time around. OP - Australia is a great place to live, especially to raise a family but the cost of living in cities is high. There are some beautiful places to live outside of the cities but it would obviously depend on the job market. I would do some research on the job market and then narrow your choice down to one state, it is such a huge place that it is difficult to be specific about areas to live. Also think about what type of climate you would like to live in as it varies quite a bit - Queensland - very hot and sunny, Victoria -proper cold winters , NSW more of a temperate climate etc etc edited by Genie on 05/11/2014

W[b'>here you get a job and you would have to start at the bottom too with lower salary than the average Australian as you dont have the 'australian experience' on your resume.[/b'> Most jobs are in the big cities and all cities are expensive so you will just have to make the best of it. Melbourne,Brisbane,Perth,Sydney,Adelaide are options. edited by Appletiser on 05/11/2014 Is that really the case now? When I lived and worked in Australia ( Sydney) I was actually paid more than most of my Australian colleagues as I had additional qualifications and experience ( that I had been specifically recruited for). I can't imagine that they would do that in most professions, as surely it is a form of discrimination. edited by Genie on 05/11/2014

Noodle Box is awesome http://www.noodleboxme.com/ I went from Thai Wok to Kitchen of Thai to Noodle Box. I only ever have the green thai curry but I reckon its the best.... I tried their other outlet - Curry Box- as a lot of people were raving about it and I was very disappointed. I ordered 3 different veggie curries and each one tasted exactly the same and not good at all. Very greasy and tasted like they had been made with curry powder ( rather than fresh spices). They reminded me of a takeaways from a bad UK curry house ( rather than a good one) It would put me off trying their take on Thai or Chinese food. But maybe that is their selling point and why people like them as it is a take on these cuisines that they are used to ( rather than more authentic cooking). It is certainly the case with the Curry Box.

Its the same as in India, someone mentioned that the milk we use in the UK is different to other countries. I miss my Wispa and Mint Aeros.. only thing that taste the same to me here is bounty and M&MS You can buy mint Aeros ( from the UK) in Spinneys and in Park n Shop, Al Maya at al Murooj and Choitrams. I have also seen Wispas in Al Maya and I think Park n Shop ( all from the UK - the chocs from the UK are in a cluster usually at the end of the choc counters) ETA the ones imported from the UK are more expensive but worth it for the taste ( compared the equivalents made regionally) edited by Genie on 02/11/2014

I always notice that some celebs wear high heels that appear to be a size too big ( there is always quite a big gap at the back by the heel) I presume there is a reason for this and that it makes the shoes more comfortable or easy to walk in. Start as you mean to go on and set the rules now. Changing things after a behavior has become established only causes resentment. Your house your rules. Set, within reason, what those rules should be and stick to them. Is there anyway she can skype on a Sunday when you get in from work?

Yes you can download onto iPlayer before you leave the UK and then watch it here. You don't need the 'thing that shall be nameless' to watch programme back, or even be online :) How do you manage that then? When I try and watch anything on i player without using one it tells me that the programme is not available in my area.

I shall be arriving in Dubai on Saturday, purposely didn't watch it as I thought I wouldn't get it in Dubai!! What do you watch it on and how? Can I get I-Player? Thanks in anticipation!! You need that which cannot be mentioned .. a vee pee n .. Just Google the initials to find one. I am not tech savvy enough to know if you can download one that will work here before you arrive - might be easier - perhaps someone else can comment on that. If not just Google and download one once you have internet services here and then you can download programmes through BBC i Player. Though there are other routes through free to air TV channels - again it would need someone more tech savvy than me to explain. I have already downloaded the first episode through the i Player and after reading the reviews am looking forward to watching it :) edited by Genie on 30/10/2014

First of all - STOP PANICKING! I pretty much guarantee you it is NOT a bat bite. They only types of bats you find in the UAE (all 3 or 4 species of them) are all insect eaters, apart from one fruit bat. They have NO interest in biting people or sucking blood and they certainly would not be crawling about on the floor. I got bitten by mozzies out on a run the other night and you should see the size of the bites - they're massive, because I have a bad reaction to insect bites and have to take antihistamines for them. The same is probably for your son, he's just had a bad reaction to one bite. [b'>There is no prevalence for rabies in the UAE. There was one death in 2009 and that was the first in a decade.[/b'> ETA - all the mozzie bites are clustered around my ankles and several close together, looks like one huge bite - very painful and very itchy. edited by FairyDust on 28/10/2014 Not only that but in that case the rabies was acquired outside the UAE as he was bitten elsewhere- in India I think- and he fell ill when he returned here. There was one other case a few years ago, an American tourist but again he acquired it in Thailand but fell ill when he arrived here.

Hello Genie Foolnightsleep (EWer) and I are very taken (read obsessed) with our UAE stunt jets, Al Fursan, who fly every morning at 7am, practising hearts and palm trees in the sky. You can see and hear them (usually 6 planes) if you are up the back of Dubai that early in the morning, so on the Bypass Road or at the back of the whole Silicon Oasis/Falcon City/Villa/Skycourts area and the Global Village end of the Ranches. It's a fabulous display every morning and well worth a little breakfast picnic outing! :) Thank you Tattie - it makes sense now - I thought foonighsleep must be the name of some natural phenomenon that I knew nothing about :D ( note to self - take more note of user names on EW)

Stacey - who has her blog is about the only person I trust about Make Up and products, all tried tested and written about - http://www.expatmakeupaddict.com/ I hate the women in these shops, I now run in, make a beeline for my product, grab it and run to the till - NO EYE CONTACT seems to work! I have developed a policy for shopping here and no matter what kind of shop I am in and no matter what I am looking for I always apply it. I wait until the assistant starts following me then turn and smile at them and wait for the magic words " what are you looking for" or " Can I help you". Then I always reply " I am looking for something I like" . It works 9 times out of 10 as it seems to stump them and they leave me alone :D On the rare occasion that I need help there is either no-one available or they say "No stock" - even though I usually find the item 10 yards later ;) edited by Genie on 27/10/2014

My husband is the one that mentioned it! And he keeps on asking 'wht do u think she did and how?' She has had a visible eyelid fashioned where previously she had none as she had classically hooded eyes. She does not suit it - the proportion of her eyes look all wrong now and that's what makes her look a bit weird IMO ...Oh as well as the usual suspects - botox and fillers. You can see that more clearly in the photos in this article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2802261/are-renee-zellweger-s-unkempt-anti-cara-eyebrows-reason-looks-different-lick-photoshop-drastically-alters-appearance.html ETA - Her make-up is not helping either - she seems to have bronzer applied the middle of her forehead and highlighter to the temples ( instead of the other way around) and it makes her forehead look large and almost domed looking. edited by Genie on 22/10/2014 edited by Genie on 22/10/2014

There are several species of bats in the UAE and you do see them swooping around at dusk and they fly fairly low but I doubt they would have swooped in and bitten his legs. You would have noticed if a bat bit his legs whilst is was happening and he would have more than a red lump. I can't imagine them swooping into bite and I have never been bothered by them when I sit outside in the evenings even though they swoop fairly low and close by. edited by Genie on 22/10/2014

I hope you find a buyer for your dress OP... But if the bride decided to change the theme after you had already spent that amount of money surely she should bear some of the costs? Otherwise it makes her seem like a bit of bridezilla expecting you to be out of pocket and make yet another dress because she changed her mind. Good luck with finding a buyer - it is a nice dress. thanks Genie... i hope i find someone too... she changed the theme in an absolute huff and unfortunately is turning out to be quite the bridezilla (aren't they all the month before the wedding!)... unfortunately she's close family so i can't vent much and will just need to get another dress stitched... this time round though i intend on making it with some cheap satin instead of spending a crazy amount on pure chiffon... in all fairness though she gave us the colour and we could come up with any style or material we want... i like an IDIOT went and picked the most expensive fabric in town... and now at an absolute loss coz i never wear western formal wear anyway... being from india most of our formal functions would involve wearing formal indian wear... She should pay for the new and old one. I was a bridesmaid for my best friend In the Summer and she wouldn't of dreamt of charging us for the dresses/alterations. I hope you manage to sort it out I agree.. but if she will not refund you for the original one she should at least be paying for the new "change of theme" one.

Thank you Lolacat and mairam. Are flies/mosquitos a problem in winter? I would say yes to both - flies if you are outside eating food during the day and mosquitos in the evenings ( I notice the latter especially as I am very allergic to them). Friends of mine had the square, rectangular umbrellas that stand to the side and hang over the table but had to replace them as they broke after a few months, ( both the original and the replacement) they were not cheap ones either, so that would put me off buying one of those types.

"we are in financial trouble now that reeva's dead because she looked after us" ... is what they said in one of their very first interviews. lost respect for them then. and you are right mum2girls, if this didnt come to light, they would probably never have returned OP's money. They have been paid 6000 rand a month by him since a month after Reeva's death ( 18 months total) They have also been paid by Hello magazine and other media for interviews and the mother is about to publish a book of her experience. Does not sit well with me - it is almost as though they are trying to gain financially from her death. We had some in one on a friends significant birthday so it is obviously do-able. To be honest at the time it never occurred to me that it may not be allowed - it was just there in the limo when we got in. As it was a few years ago ( and I did not book the car or arrange anything) I do not know which company it was.. It was a stretch Hummer..Perhaps if you ring a few and ask them directly they will be able to tell you.

Don't know that but I know a few people who use those foam pool noodles under the sheet at the edge of the bed and it works to stop the child rolling out.. They are easy to find here.

after he started giving her money she apparently said if he didn't carry on she would tell me and found out where we lived Tell you what? about him giving her money or something else? If it was about him giving her money why would that be a big enough thing to be able to blackmail him with? It all sounds a bit implausible to me and I suspect that you think so too (given that you are posting on here after knowing about it for a few months). I think your gut instinct is telling you something and that you should listen to it. Sorry I hope you find a resolution soon.

I have and have a mixed experience. All of the items I ordered were of excellent quality and a real bargain however their delivery is a bit hit and miss. Initially everything I ordered was delivered within a few days ( by courier) or a week at most. However I stopped using them as a couple of things I ordered were never delivered and took some chasing to get an answer and a refund. One item was delivered months after I ordered it when I had given up hope of ever receiving it. So for quality and value - yes - BUT - check that the item is actually available and the estimated delivery time before ordering - they have an online chat facility and I would use it for that. But I was very happy with all the items that I did receive.

30,000 DHS!!! it has to be a joke surely? I don't think I have ever seen anything quite as hideous. The tears you would be crying would be real ones not crocodile ones if your husband surprised you with this gift :D
