Thanks that has cheered me up knowing I am not missing any of the good stuff:) honestly as someone who watches very little TV I have been looking forward to it all week and was feeling very hard done by!

I have scrolled through all the channels and can't find it anywhwere. There is one dedicated OSN Paralympic channel but it does not start broadcasting 'till 11.30pm and the opening ceremony is starting now. Very disapointed, I have been looking forward to it... and given the saturation of channels covering the Olympics I thought they might have had more than one channel covering the Paralympics. I think that it v sad :( edited by Genie on 29/08/2012

I am a single female and have travelled to Kuwait at least a dozen times in the last 2 years, usually just for the day but sometimes for up to 5 days. I always get a visit visa stamped in my passport on arrival without any problem of questions about my marital status - infact the visa card you fill in only asks for passport details and an address in Kuwait. I have a UK passport. In the past many collegues in the UK - mostly UK/ European, but not all - also travel there and get their visa stamped on arrival. If in doubt we use this site and it has always been correct - I have put in your specifics. http://kuwait.visahq.com/requirements/India/resident-United_Arab_Emirates/

Eid should be either saturday or Sunday. ,most probably Sunday. We will know for sure tomorrow after Iftar . Eid Mubarak I have just been told by an Emirati friend that Eid has been called tonight and it is now Eid. As have been teased about Ramadan not sure if this is a little joke or not.. want to check before I send any Eid greetings. He is wrong and misinformed or he is joking with you. Thanks .. the latter probably.

I remember reading in the National newspaper recently several similar cases where people had committed credit card fraud to pay traffic fines with AD police. The article was quite detailed with quotes from AD police and bank etc. However the National paper's search engine is useless and despite several searches with relevant terms I cannot find the article. Perhaps if you contacted the National they could let you have a copy as I think it quoted sources from AD police on this subject - could be a starting point for you as they are obviously familiar with this happening. This is the article I found on Gulf News: http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/general/crook-hacks-dubai-man-s-credit-card-to-pay-abu-dhabi-police-1.1050943 Yes that is the case - well done! OP why not contact AD traffic police directly as they are obviously investigating this reported one.

That Bobbi Brown sounds worth a try. Genie is the makeup expert here if I am not mistaken :) HaHa - don't know about that! I am a tryer though ;) but I do know that after a lifetime of buying powders and then only using them once or twice this is the only one I would recommend, it does actually brighten your complexion as well

I gave up using powder as after trying all the major brands over the years I found I did not like any of them. No matter how fine or translucent (or expensive) they were I found they all made my complexion seem dull - I prefer the dewy rather than the matt look. On a recent trip to London, the woman at Bobbi Brown in John Lewis persuaded me, much against my will, to try their brightening finishing powder and I am so glad she did! It sets makeup without being noticable or making the skin dull - it has a very, very slight sheen to it. In the compact it does not look like the usual powder as it is made up of several shades all of which would seem too dark, but it is not. I don't know if they do different shades, the one I have is called brightening nudes and I would not be without it now.

Enjoying the athletes parade. All that talent, ambition, hope and happiness - it's the best bit I think. I thought it nice that the tricolour the French were waving had the Union jack on the reverse, but who was the German guy giving that very odd salute from the stands?? must check the press for comment on that! Very impressed with those drummers too. edited by Genie on 28/07/2012

Started off Ok but soon descended into a bit of a cringe IMO - in the end started to wonder who and what it was representing. Not worth staying up for but will stick it out to the bitter end to see if there are any decent fireworks or something to justify staying up so late. David Beckham on his way in a speedboat.... But yes the house and beds and twitter thing was confusing Yes he was something worth staying up for at least, going to see who lights flame but at this point I have no high hopes! edited by Genie on 28/07/2012

Once again our building reception of HD channels has gone on the blink, which means I can't watch it on OSN. I am hoping that as Sky news has had nothing but olympic coverage from 6am today that will continue and I can watch it in English on there.. otherwise it is AD sports channel in Arabic...

I always use S&S for my skincare products and never had a problem. Had about 4 deliveries so far. It is creams though, not liquids or shampoo etc Is cream not considered a liquid? Well it is thick and in a jar so I guess not.

I recommend the Atlas Spinal center in DHCC, in fact I cannot recommend them highly enough. I can't recommend them at all. I got transfered from Dubai Bone and Joint Center (DBAJ) to them, specially to Mr. Finnegan as my Doc of DBAJ doesn't trust in Dr. Katie. Scenario began with organizing the appointment. The Arab Lady from the reception informed me that Finnegan has left for vacation (I knew after my first visit that i was a lie) but i could make a new appointment with the new doctor but he wouldnt be licensed at the moment but is already working !!!! (I assume its illegal to work without license anyway). I refused to make any appointment. Again my Doc of DBAJ convinced me to try it as the treatment would finally release me from my back pain. He insured me to talk in person to the center and check all details with Dr. Katie. Ok - 2 days later i had my first appointment at the center with Dr. Katie. She advised that nobody of DBAJ give her my details and nobody was talking to her, even when i saw my medical reports + x-rays of DBAJ in my file. x-rays, first treatment with the machine done and directly after the treatment my back pain increased. She explained that is normal and it will go after i will take a rest at home. My pain increased dramatically, i wasn't able to move properly, cried from pain. My DH called Dr. Katie and she was speechless and couldn't explain the reaction but i should continue my treatment with them. Next day the pain got lesser. Second visit at Atlas Spinal Center Dr. Katie didn't answer any of my questions regarding the my pain. Her comment were: Everybody is different, so there could be pain. Strange that she didn't inform me about that before my first treatment. Discussion continued if i would be interested to continue the treatment which is very important because of my problem with my atlas i need to sign up a contract with them for 20sessions for only 19xxx AED (it was almost 20.000 AED). I refused because first i wanted an explanation for my pain. She continued talking and talking that 10 session for 8900 AED would be ok for the moment and then we will see. I refused again. In the end the new doctor came to convince me that I MUST sign. No luck. In the end the manager Terry showed up as I'm a Dubai Resident i MUST sign and its a MUST in there regulations . I explained that first i want to get proper explanation and then i will check with my health insurance regarding the treatment costs . He almost forced me to sign the paper as otherwise i wouldn't be able to see Dr. Katie again. I went back to DBAJ to talk to my doctor there and he explained me that with the whole thing is fishy. He transfered several patients to Atlas Spinal Center before and none of them ever had to sign a contract, all of them got treated with 2-7 sessions. The treatment might be is successful but I will not return to Atlas Spinal Center anymore after all whats happened. Sounds for my like moneymaking rather than a honest treatment. I signed up for the course of treatment, without any pressure, it cost 16000 and was and is worth every fils. After 10 years of constant back pain, hip pain and developing leg weakness it has now all been resolved. I did a lot of research before signing up for the treatment as well as having a long consultation with Dr Finnegan and Dr Katie where they explained everthing in detail. The consultation was automatically given before any treatment began. The explained that I could sign up for a course or pay for individual sessions as I went along. As I knew my case was complicated and would probably involve a lot of treatment I signed for the course as it would work out cheaper . 5 months later all my treatment is still covered by the initial payment - consultations, muscle work, treatment with the machine and x rays etc. Dr Katie did explain to me that initially I may have more pain as the muscles fought the new alignment - muscle memory meant that they would be used to being in a certain position. I have had times in the first few treaments where I did get some muscle spasms but as I was being seen every other day they were sorted out within 24 hours. I was also told if I experienced anything that was a problem to come straight back and not wait for the next appointment. I am sorry you had that experience -sounds like a communication problem, in my case I was given all the information clearly and knew what to expect. Dr Katie even phoned me at home after my first treatment to see how I was. I can only speak from my experience but for me they have changed the quality of my life for the better. Also I have spent far more money than that in the last 10 years - to no avail, a lot of it on MRI's that failed to diagnose the origin of the problem. edited by Genie on 27/07/2012

I was one of the posters raving about them on the other thread - I am so glad others agree. I think they are brilliant, I ordered a pizza the other night and it was at the door in just over 10 mins! Admittedly I do live near them but I also live just as close to 2 others who take on average 40 mins to deliver but whose pizzas are no where near as good. Problem is I have gone from having pizza once every few months to once a week! got to get a grip on that:) edited by Genie on 27/07/2012

I love that guy, I am fascinated by the things he does. I saw one of the clips from his new show where he shrunk an iphone put it in a glass bottle, tapped the bottle and it went back to its original size whilst in the bottle (and impossible to remove without breaking the bottle). Also on his new show he melts the glass on a showcse with his hand, smoke coming from his hand and his hand imprint left in the glass.I think he is totally amazing - in fact he almost has me convinced there is more to it than smoke and mirrors, though logically I know it must be.

I recommend the Atlas Spinal center in DHCC, in fact I cannot recommend them highly enough. I suffered from 10 years of back pain following a bad fall. In the last few years I also developed quite debilitating hip pain and then in the last year leg weakness. After years of on and off unsuccessful treatment (in the long term) I went there. They diagnosed that all the problems were in fact coming from my neck, which had thrown my spine out of line resulting in spinal curvature, distorted pelvis and shortening of one leg. In the past I have been told it was many things - mostly disc degeneration. The X- rays they took of my neck and spine showed the problems clearly (funnily enough no-one had done them before - only MRI's). Within two sessions of painless treatment most of my symptoms had eased. Now at the end of my treatment and I have no problems whatsoever. The two doctors are both from the USA - trained chiropractors and are lovely. The initial consultation involved a very detailed history, physical exam and X rays - they are very thorough. I see Dr Katie Henery, she is fantastic, warm, friendly and excellent at what she does. I initially saw the guy who set the clinic up (Dr Finnegan) but he has gone back to the US and has been replaced by a guy who is equally as nice. In fact everyone in the clinic is so warm and welcoming it is a pleasure to go there. The clinic is on the ground floor of the Al Razi building in block E. Tel 04 451 8877 ETA - They initally said that my problem was so bad that it would be a challenge to treat, but they have cured it. It is wonderful to be pain free and able to walk properly again! edited by Genie on 26/07/2012

I have changed hairdressers here as many times as I've had hot dinners. I went to Inger once and was pleased enough with what she'd done that I made a second appointment with her. I don't know what happened the second time, maybe she was rushed because I arrived late (my own fault for always misjudging how long it takes to get to SZR from my house), but I decided she was too expensive for the result. I also didn't like being pressurized by the receptionist to make my next appointment whilst I was paying for that one. Pastels do my colour beautifully, I am still trying to find someone to give me the right cut! Thanks for replying..do you noe how Nabiha oe Yvonne are?? I have used Yvonne for years - she worked at Hairworks when they first opened and I was delighted when she came back to Dubai a few years ago. I highly recommend her. I have also read good things about Nabiha on this forum though I have never used her services.

I think the answer depends on where you live. My experience is that Dubai serves beverages openly after iftar. In Abu Dhabi they do but hidden away - bars are usually shut and in other emirates it is not avilable at all. But having said that things change every year. Try ringing one of the major hotels and ask them - they should know what their plans are for this year.

Thanks genie and no I guess I shouldn't base mine on 50 per month or I would be forking out 1800 for each of for the 3 years :) I just want to thank them because we have a lot of friends staying over from Abu Dhabi and they are very good with letting people in if I ask them to or receiving deliveries for us. Ha Ha - your calculation has nearly made me rethink my tipping strategy :) But no I will still do it as they also do the things you want to tip for. I am sure any tip you give will be very much appreciated as they earn so little money. Exactly, I am sure they don't earn much and you value the help they give you and think it is worth what you give them so everyone's happy! And imagine how your service would go downhill if you cut their tips :) I would have to move!

I give them 50 Dhs each every month as it is easier to do that as often if they help me with bags etc I do not have change to give them a small tip. (the entrance to our building has a set of very steep stairs that I find really difficult to negotiate with heavy items). When they go on holiday I give 200 dhs. I would give more but there are 2 of them and seem to change on a yearly basis. I think any amount about that would be good and appreciated - definitely 500 would be. Edited to say - I do not think you should base your calculations on 50 dhs a month! I choose to do that so that they are always ready to help me as I really have a physical problem with higher steps and those are not only high steps but really steep as well so I need the help. edited by Genie on 20/07/2012

Maybe leave him with dad when he cries and teach dad how to comfort him rather than having the baby handed back to you when he starts crying ? If he cries when his dad handles him then no doubt he will do the same with strangers. Start at home first - get the baby used to being handled by his dad would be the better answer I think :)

At 3 months old your baby should be very attached to you - and you to them, this is not abnormal but the way things should be. Babies under one year old thrive best when they are attached to one carer. Unless you are having difficulty with coping in being the main carer it would be best for your baby to be with you rather than being unnecessarily exposed (with an immature immune system) to all the bugs that can be commonly picked up from exposure to other young children.

I am glad that Genie mentioned her brother seeing the cabin crew getting frisky in the galley, as I thought nobody believed me when I said that I caught a couple feeling each other up as well. I guess they requested to fly together to get a few days break away. I shall be flying EK again in a few days time…..will report back…but I am being optimistic and hoping for a smile and semi-decent food. As long as they don't shout at DS again, it will be a massive improvement. I wonder if it was the same couple? They need to wise up - one day they will be caught by the wrong passenger and I can imagine what the consequences would be.

How is the economy coach from Dubai with Etihad? I have a business colleague as well as a relative who use it all the time. They say it is very good. Punctual, safe service with proper coach luggage facilities (the under coach storage type with the driver to help). I see the coach all the time and as I said before it is one of those big touristy type luxury ones.

Sorry but Emirates is the pits...I still fly them when there is no other choice but they have gone down badly. Qatar is nothing special but better than Emirates. I actually found Etihad to be very good. Pity about the long drive to Abu Dhabi. I would definitely fly more often with them if they departed from Dubai airport. Trying Cathay pacific for our hols this summer. Hope we wont be disappointed. You do not have to drive, Etihad operate a coach, one of those luxury tourist type ones, from the Chelsea tower on SZR and one other location for economy passengers, or a limo pickup for business etc. I know someone who uses it all the time, says it is very comfy and no hassle.

In the past 20 odd years I have taken many flights both regional and long haul, in all sectors, 1st, buisness and economy, mainly on Emirates. The only time I am ever asked to fill in one of those opinion forms when on Emirates for the survey is when travelling in 1st or business - never in economy. The only airline that has asked me to fill in one of those forms whilst travelling in economy was BA - twice. I always wonder what they do with any bad reviews as you hand the forms straight back to the cabin crew. Emirates when they first started flying had an excellent economy service but that was years ago. I took a business class flight with them to London earlier this month - the service was excellent but a sharp contrast to the economy flight I took 2 months ago. In fact in any economy flight with them now I don't expect good service - TG for the ICE facility - I just plug myself in and try to ignore everything else ( I am not a demanding passenger - I never eat on planes and always walk to the galley if I want something. If I do get a smile from the crew I consider it good service now. My brother flew from Melbourne to Paris on QA last year and said they were excellent. Earlier this year he flew Melbourne to London on Emirates, having not flown with them for 10 years was looking forward to it , and was very disapointed - he felt they had really gone downhill and that QA was far better. On the Emirates flight he walked to the galley to get some water and found the female flight attendant sitting on her male counterparts knee, being given a cuddle and being told that she would get a "special massage" later. Even though they knew my brother was there they just ignored him and carried on cuddling and giggling!!

there are polished ones here and there, but I'm looking for the real thing :) so annoying. you would think its easy to find in this part of the world, but its not. or i just dont know where to look for them edited by Magyera on 15/07/2012 Don't give up - I have definitely seen them here, sadly I can't remember exactly where. I think it may have been on those stalls that sell salt rock lamps and crystals and you can find those on the lower floor of Dubai Mall and Madinat Jumeirah. Of the two I [i'>think [/i'>it was at Dubai Mall.

The best one I have had is from a new place called Rossovivo on SZR. It is an artisan pizza place- the chef is italian and specilizes in pizza, they import the flour etc from Italy and use morzarella from the Italian dairy in Sharjah. They have a proper wood burning pizza oven that cooks the pizza in 90 seconds - which makes the delivery really quick. The menu is small but the pizzas are really delicious and authentic. I know I sound like an advertorial but I really rate them very highly and won't order from anywhere else now! edited by Genie on 12/07/2012

It would be so easy to design a car that makes you hit a button 3, 4 or 5 times to indicate how many ppl are traveling today, and then you cannot turn off the engine until you hit that button again a number of times…..then you would look back to see how many kids are with you. Excellent idea. An Emirati engineeer in AD has invented a device to help prevent these tragedies. It is a sensor in the child carseat. If the child is left in the seat after the engine is switched off it sends an alert to the drivers phone. If there is no response after a minute or two it then opens the car windows slightly, after another minute it then swiches on the AC and sounds an audible external alarm. According to the article I read Volvo have expressed an interest in delveloping this. Of course it would only work if the child is in a carseat in the first place, but in my mind the two things go hand in hand and should be the focus of a government safety campaign.

Hmm I wonder if it was actually building work in the end. In my apartment I experienced this when they were building the Metro out the front and the Ritz Carlton/ liberty house/ Sky gardens etc at the back. It happened a few times and I put it down to the deep drilling of the foundations etc.

The thought of that makes me feel quite nauseous. How could you stand there and let him eat out of that bowl? I would also say how could you let the dog eat of the bowl. But that is me - it is [i'>us[/i'> and [i'>them[/i'> as far as I'm concerned when it comes to hygeine with animals - but I know some pet owners are different and see no harm in these things.

thank you... also sorry to hear about your friend. Tell her to stay strong and find out as much information as she can so that she can make informed choices; it is not neccessarily a death sentence. The UK cancer society is a good place to start. http://cancerhelp.cancerresearchuk.org/ Also tell her to find out as much as she can about what support is available to her. There is so much available in the UK both from the NHS and from social services IF patients get the right information. For example my mother was entitled to finacial help with travel and all sorts of things as well as having many services and facilitites, adaptation fo her home etc. There are also many, many good support groups and psychological support available - it is just a case of enquiring and persuing it. Knowledge really is power in these situations.
