Yes but it depends on the type of cancer, small cell, non- small cell, slow growing or not etc but more importantly the stage of the cancer and if it has spread or not. I know someone who lived for 30 years after diagnosis at 50 years old and removal of a lung lobe. On the other hand my mother died 6 months after diagnosis, I am very sad to say. It really does depend on the above ... edited by Genie on 19/06/2012

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDtSnETPVDM Sorry... :) That is very funny :D but the one I think funnier is one where the same scene had been dubbed but this time for flying Ryanair. If you do not know Ryanair you may not find it as funny - but if you do it is a side splitter. Far too many bad expletives on that one for me to put the link here but it is easy to find on youtube. ETA just searched for it and can only find a very sanitised one - not the same and nothing like as funny as the original. Ryanair must have had it pulled - shame. edited by Genie on 19/06/2012

Hi guys. Dr. Koster delivered my daughter in November. I received an email from HealthBay a few weeks back informing me that she was no longer working there. Since then, I have been trying to find her so that I can have my 6 month check-up. I called HealthBay and they wouldnt give me ANY information. And instead they told me that they would inform Becks her midwife, however I have yet to receive a call or email. I then called American Hospital (where she delivered my daughter) and they told me that Dr. Koster had retired. I then came onto EW and saw this thread and now I am confused, but will let you know if I finally find her :) This is a testament to just how good the woman is. I was thoroughly impressed with her throughout my pregnancy and my delivery. Will keep you updated I know Dr Koster well and spoke to her last week, the post I put below is up todate and I have copied it again here. I told her people were asking for her and she said I could put her number on here as it is one she uses only for patients - I am a bit wary of doing so though as the thread may be pulled for advertising. If you put your email i will send it to you, otherwise the info below is up to date. For those who were looking for Dr Koster - she is now at the German Clinic in the Al Razi building in Health care city (block a second floor) and also has a clinic one day a week at City hospital.

Lol- I mean that not many younger people seem to say it, unless they have heard it from an older person. Better? ;) For her ...yes ;) .. she did grow up on a farm in the back of beyond so maybe they use it a lot out there.

It's kind of annoying though, that the news are [b'>carrying on like [/b'>[b'>p0rk chops[/b'>. showing 'footage' of soda bottles spilled in the supermarket. IMHO very insensitive to the poor people in Christchurch who have just been through far, far worse... ha ha - I have not heard that for a while, my SIL always says it but when I ask her why that particular phrase she cannot tell me. Tho' strangely enough I understand what she means by it when she says it. edited by Genie on 19/06/2012

Yep, its usually how mountain ranges are formed LOL Amazing, isn't it to be able to find seashells up in the mountains? I found a beautiful seashell fossil on top of Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain - really amazed me.

Maybe - the ones that hit Dubai were all related to the big ones in Iran (whilst the east coast ones were something seperate) I don't think they have had one on the fault line in Iran that affects Dubai for a while, so maybe they think one may be due. Actually they had worse ones on the east coast. I remember one about 10 years ago when I woke up at midnight (in Al Ain) to find my whole bed shaking. I was terrified as I had my back to the door and thought someone has jumped on the bed. I was so relieved when I realised it was an earthquake that I just went back to sleep!

We are on a fault line here. We have had some shakers in the past! Who remembers being evacuated from towers? Me.. My office really shook and the maid ran terrified from my apartment on the 16th floor. All my pictures on the walls were really crooked when I got home

Can anyone who knows the area tell me if this is near the Mornington Peninsula? It looks like it may be but it is difficult for me to tell from that map. No-it isn't-around 3 hours drive away at a guess-my brother is down there and hasn't posted anything yet so can't be too bad there Thank you - that is a relief.

So ive been looking at one beds and studio housing for staff at my company, and even places like DSO and Discovery Gardens seem to be higher than i expect. [b'>Even my own apartment on SZR got a 5K increase this year[/b'>? Anybody else is paying more than last year? and does this mean that rents are going to go crazy again? I'd rather then just offer an allowance to staff instead of getting into so many tenancy contracts... My apartment on SZR was reduced 5K in March this year. It has come down 12.5K alltogether since rents were at their highest (and the highest rents did not apply to me as had already been in the building a few years)

I would get rid of her .. I dont think after what has happened with her now you are going to fully trust her and this will then cause its own problems. I know its not an esay process going down the route of cancelling and rehiring ( not to mention expensive ) but I would much rather do that and have somone that I can trust. [b'>I pop home early during the week at ramdom times to just check in on my maid, I dont have trust issues with her but when the cats away [/b'>........ That is a wise thing to do. My brother and his wife used to do that when they lived here. One maid was caught having a tea party with all her friends, sitting in the lounge using the best wedgewood service, a wedding gift the year before that was only used when entertaining... at least she got that right :D Worse still, my brother popped home midmorning to find the gate and backdoor unlocked, the baby asleep in her cot and the maid nowhere in sight...After 30 mins she returned from" putting the rubbish in the bins sir". The scary thing was he had no idea how long she has actually been away. (not the same maid as the 1st incident) It always pays to keep staff on their toes by not knowing when to expect you if you have a fixed routine away from the house. The OP definitely needs to let this maid go. Goodness only knows where else and what else she may have done/ gone and lied about.

When you say periods of time what do you mean? a weekend, a week a month or a whole term? Maybe the periods of time are not long enough to be effective. Also as LT points out what concerns you more - the money or the failing grades? Would you mind the failing grades less if the school was not so expensive? As to refusing counselling, can you not make her go by having consequences for not going? I say this with the caveat that I am not the mother of a teen so it is easy for me to say; but surely as she is still dependent on you for everything she needs or wants that gives you some leverage? Finally I have seen on here and in the local press, many people mention Lifeworks for dealing successfully with problems - may be you could try them. Your DD may respond better to a different style of counselling. edited by Genie on 12/06/2012

Have you tried taking away her phone and computer access and grounding her until she gets her grades up? If she loses her social life altogether that might be a motivating factor. I'm not a parent but I did do poorly in my exams because I never studied - my mum was away a lot and so I just went out all the time. Wish now that she had been stricter! I agree. In general people do not change undesirable behavoir, whatever their age or gender, without consequences for poor behavoir. What those consequences need to be is up to you to determine; the more destructive the behavoir than the more serious the consequences should be. That could range from what GA suggests or something more serious - only you are in a position to judge that. The one thing is that you have to follow through and not make empty threats. Of course it could be that she may have underlying issues - such as bullying or other emotional problems and you should investigate those possibilities. But it is also true that many in this age group rebel and act up either because of peer pressure or just because that is how they feel. Consequences are the best way to deal with the latter IMO.

I meant 'fell off' from the beach bag - I guess I should have said 'fall out'. Ask her to try put something similair in the beach bag and see if they could fall out easily. To me it looks like someone actually took the rings from her bag if they are gone. All 4 falling out of the bag is slightly more unlikely. I guess there are no cameras at the pool - but if there are, she should have them looked at. I agree - it would be very unlucky for all 4 to fall out, would make me think that they were stolen out of the bag or mislaid edited by Genie on 11/06/2012

I have done this in every place I have lived here, apart from current one as the LL won't allow it. It is simple - if you open the door and look at the lock, where it fits into the side of the door, you will see a screw directly underneath the lock mechanism (as opposed to the ones at the top and bottom which screw the whole lock plate into the door). Just unscrew this - it is a very long retaining bolt which holds the locking mechanism in place. The barrel of the lock (where you insert the key) will now slide out of the lock. Just take this to a hardware store and buy the exact same size one. Slide the new one into place and reinsert the retaining bolt. Last time I bought one it cost about 40 AED for a good German deadbolt. (although on occasions I have swapped it for one of the internal locks as in AL Ain all the rooms had deadbolts in the villas/ apartments). You will need someone to be in the house, unless there is a second lock, of course to guard the door. ETA I would recommend one of the hardware shops in Satwa - I used to buy from these type of places - bound to be much cheaper than Ace harware edited by Genie on 11/06/2012 edited by Genie on 11/06/2012

These green juice recipes were given to me by a nuritionist in the UK - they are supposed to be alkalizing. I haven't been here that long, but haven't seen kale or bok choy in any of the supermarkets? I find Bok Choy easily, at C4, Spinneys and Waitrose - even my local grocery store has it sometimes. Kale is harder, RIPE market at the Garden centre has it on a Saturday. I believe RIPE have opened a new store in Umm Seqeim, though I have not been there yet, but I read that they sold it there. edited by Genie on 10/06/2012

For dry hair try using mayonnaise - store bought - or you can make your own (two egg yolks, half a cup of oil, use mixer at high speed and add oil drop by drop to egg yolks); apply to hair, cover hair and leave on for an hour; longer is better, as long as you can; then wash off with shampoo as usual. Ooh I forgot about this. Used to do it years ago after being told about it by a Filipino colleague who had fabulous shiny hair. It really works and if you leave it on overnight (only possible if you are single :D) it leaves your hair full of body as well as really shiny.

Update on my experiment. When I went to take off my makeup last night the boots mascara had flaked completely off! It never does this with just 2 coats but did with the 5 coats. The Rimmel one was still perfect looking with not a flake or smudge in sight, even though it was 5 coats- so the Rimmel is the best. edited by Genie on 10/06/2012

No - I want an English fringe not a Lebanese one please. One of the best compliments I've received was from dd after I'd been done up (hair and make up) for a wedding and she said to me "mum, you look Lebanese". I was thrilled. Don't misunderstand me it is not derogatory, just a comment on the different things you say here as short cuts to be understood. In fact it is the words of the Lebanese hairdresser I used to go to for a quick blow dry- who after many attemps at trying to blow dry my hair eventually got it and used to asked English or Lebanese style?

Thank you Beebers and Genie..I cant believe I spent around AED 120 for the redken and no joy :( I dont even know if I should bother waiting till it runs out and then buy the morrocan oil but will definitely go and buy for sure.. Genie, I shall look into the Miessence - although it doesnt seem to show up on the beautypedia website you recommended me :( Thank you No - I think the site mainly reviews products sold in teh US and as both Miessence and Skin Doctors are Australian products they are not reviewed, that is why I put the other links in. As I said my SIL used to sell their products, she is a natruopath (?sp) and will absolutely not use anything that has synthetic chemicals etc in it. They are lovely products and 100% natural ingredients.

Thank you so much ladies.. I have the argan oil by redken - it did absolutely nothing for my hair - perhaps made it 5% softer but nothing huge. is morrocon oil the same or does it contain a lot more argan in it that makes it better? where is the ladies beach club- where I can buy this product? is that the dubai ladies club? [b'>Genie -[/b'> it sounds like you may be using the products i am looking for as you mentioned parabens, sodium laureth and silicone so i assume you are using products that dont contain these - could you pls tell me what you are using? Also where can I buy K-Pak by joico - it was recommended below. If you want a product that contains no synthetic ingredients and is 100% certified organic then the only product I know of that is available here is Miessence. It is available in the organics cafe and they have both skin and haircare products as well as makeup. For more info on the ingredients in their products check here: http://elyorganics.com/pages/miessence-ingredients/ and on the company itself check here: http://www.miorganicproducts.com/miessence-organic-products.php My SIS in Oz used to sell these products and she is very in to the whole organic / ethical thing. They are a pleasure to use, but I am a very fickle customer and am always changing brands. I recently purchased the Skin Doctors range (another Aussie product) and so far am very impressed, very moisturising. Although I will admit I did not check the ingredients, they had an offer on Amazon of 60% off and as it is an expensive range I had been meaning to try I purchased it. As for the redken oil - I always suspect these big companies of cashing in and diluting the oil with something else - though I could be wrong. Try the pure stuff. The Ladies club is on Jumeirah Beach road, on the right hand side if your are heading toward the Burj Al Arab, about 1Km past Mercarto.

Thank you all so much for your replies. The feeder has been out since April when the birds started nesting so we assumed that it was a good time to put it in the garden but yes in retrospect seed is probably better here as the birds are all so small. I will pass on the info and hopefully our phone calls now can be about something else : ) Now I know that when they have young you are not supposed to feed them bread, fats or nuts as they can be hazardous to the young nestlings.

We put bread in a tray in the garden and it disappears so I assume birds eat it. We also keep a large plastic box full of water near it could also be rats - desert rats are very plentiful in gardens here. My mum had to stop throwing bread out onto the grass in the Uk as she developed a big problem with it attracting field mice.

I mostly use it for skin care and I just put a drop through the ends of my hair if it is feeling a bit dry or frizzy (wavy hair that does not like the humidity). I know someone who has started using it as a finishing product and her hair looks fantastic. I have also used it as a one off hair treatment, shampooing it out after, and it was great. My hair is baby soft anyway so I do not use too much of it. I agree with your earlier comment about being away from here. I look like I have a different head of hair when I travel, all it takes is one wash to have full bouncy hair again.

I know in the UK you are only supposed to put out food for birds in the winter as in the summer there is plenty of food for them to forage for. Maybe something similar here. Also lots of the birds here are insect catchers so maybe not interested in the nuts or they just don't realise it is food?

2 words...Morrocan Oil! Its fabulous for hair. Agreed. I also put it in my shower gel and body lotion. Skin feels fantastic. The ladies beach club sells 2 different brands, both 100% argan oil just a price difference for some reason. A bit pricy but so worth the money and you only need to use a few drops.

I know a lot of people rate Dermalogica products highly but I am not one of them. I tried their products for a few months and found they made my normal skin very dry. Most of the moisturisers contain dimethicone, which is silicone, that is what makes your skin feel silky smooth when you appy it, but in my case anyway, make it feel much drier when you remove the cream or it wears off. Their products also contain parabens (bad for skin) and the cleansers list sodium laureth sulfate as the 2cnd ingredient (after water) so it must contain a lot of it. For more info of the ingredients in all their products check out this site: http://www.beautypedia.com/Brand/Dermalogica/99.aspx Of course there are many who find their products great but for me they definitely made my skin very dry. ETA - what I forgot to say is that maybe if you just stop using Dermalogica your skin will improve no matter which brand you switch to. edited by Genie on 09/06/2012
