In the past I have given my lady, money or vouchers but thus year we gave her a spa voucher yo a reasonably priced beauty salon, "the Red Lounge" 250 dhms for a package of 5 things. She wanted a hair cut, colour. She also had nails done and a massage and I know she really enjoyed being pampered. She deserved it!

We stayed in Penang from dec 26th till just after new year last year and had a great time. We stated at the Holiday Inn which is a middle of the range hotel but perfectly satisfactory, right on the beach, close to markets and public bus also which is easy to catch into Georgetown. Catch a Taxi to the a tropical Spice Garden. Fantastic place with delicious food for lunch and the scenery is spectacular. Show time had a feature on the gardens two nights ago, Deborah Henry, "Destination Weddings". Not sure if they will have a repeat or not. The markets in Georgetown ( the small local crafters one) not the big one was great. Huge influx of motorbikes from the mainland over Xmas and new year but that did not disturb us.

we stayed at the Swissotel last xmas with our whole family meeting up from different countries. The location is great, directly next to it is the MRT station so easy walking and on top of that is a small shopping mall with mimi-supermarket and food court in the basement so excellent for breakfast if you don't want to eat at the hotel which is quite pricey when converting Sing$ to dirhams. very easy to catch taxis if you are not wanting to MRT it. Clarke Quay and Boat Quay are right behind and you can walk all along the river. Our kids loved the pool and the litre streams with fish in them. The rooms were fine especially for families.

Why would you buy an 800dhm penny board for a 5 year old? Pennyboards are great skateboards and the skate well but are extremely overpriced in Dubai. You should buy a cheap one at first for your youngster until he can learn to skate and then later if they are still wanting to skate upgrade. If you buy a 5 year old a pennyboard what will you get them when they are 10? Was having this exact conversation with someone yesterday about birthday presents for an 8 year old who has everything as it's all been given on a silver platter from a very early age. It gets very hard.

Sydney, I feel, is the best place for someone Lebanese. Areas such as Bankstown have a very bad reputation amongst non-Lebanese Australians simply because of the Lebanese there (as the ones there have been in the media for raping women who were not covered, stabbing men etc.), but it is a very Arab friendly area, my Lebanese friend informed me. There is a very big issue in Sydney at the moment netween Lebanese Australians and other Australians, though. I say that as you may wish to decidehow integrated you'd like to become in Lebanese Australia. Public schools are less safe than private, in my opinion. I am full Australian, with an Australian name and 'look' Australian. My children are Arabic. They look Arabic. They have Arabic names.I would not put them into a public school. It isn't as though every child in a public school is a trouble maker. But, as public schools have an open door system and enrolment is dependent only on your postcode, you may have a school with extremely ignorant and racist children, brouight up by extremely ignorant and racist parents who've never left the neighbourhood. At private schools, on the other hand, as there are assessment tests for entry in many, and the fees are high, you get people who have not lived the welfare life. There are still racists, but it is much better dealt with because the schools 'image' is important to them continuing to make money. Andinternational students are worth money. I would look for a more expensive area to live. I don't totally agree with Emma's statement about public schools. If you go to say the Sth Eastern suburbs of melb you will find many middle class, well travelled Aussies from a range if backgrounds, Sth Africa, phillipino, Sri lankan, vietnamese, Somali ( and other African nations) as well as Lebanese and I reiterate middle income earners. The public schools there are fine. Some people can be racist but not all. One thing also not mentioned is that in private schools these days ( eg capital city private schools) the top students and many of the students are from Asian backgrounds not white. 3rd generation Aussies. I'm white Aussie too and my children have dark skin from their father originally non-Australian, before Dubai they were attending a small private Christian College and government run kindergarten. I'm not sure where we would send them again as we would not be moving back to the same area. Australiajudy' comments are well said and sum it up well. Your Visa does not stipulate which city you have to go to? I thought once you got your PR you must stipulate to the government where you will be living. I know my sister-in-law had to a couple of years back. My niece goes to a Catholic Private school in a smallish town in Qld and yes the majority of faces there are white. That is unfortunately however to be expected as its a small country town. Good luck, I think it's going to be great but a bit of a shock to the system for you. Good luck!

Yes which part of Australia will you be going to? I don't believe there is such a thing as Lebanese schools. Some schools offer Arabic as a language these days. Try to google and see If there is a Lebanese Association of Australia or something like that. You will find many Australian Lebanese people. My advise would be to put your children in a local government school ( which school depends on where you are going to live of course as they are zoned ) and integrate your children into Aussie society. No such thing as KG1 it's kindergarten (preschool) and some kindys are very hard to get into so you should contact the local council where you may be going to live and get a list or put your name down for government kindys ASAP. If you can afford private kindergarten then there will be wait lists also. Don't mean to put a damper on things but some places have wait lists just like here. You will have a great life there As its a wonderful country!

Singapore is a great place to live ( check previous posts there is lots of info on here about it). FYI for those looking at moving to Singapore ( this may not affect everyone) - Location Updates from Linkedin Singapore Beginning in August 2014, companies with more than 25 employees must try to find a local hire for vacancies before recruiting staff abroad. The law is limited to professional and managerial positions paying less than S$12,000 per month, which must be posted in a jobs bank administered by the Singapore Workforce Development Agency for at least 14 days before opening the search to foreigners. This move is seen as a response to public upset over the rise in foreign workers over the last decade. ___________________________________________________________

Will add in another "yes" for NKD - never greasy, good quantity of toppings, delivery on time, great service from them in JBR! Totally agree have been ordering from them since they opened in the Marina. Fantastic! Especially with one daughter who has food allergies, such a healthy alternative then the usual cheese pizza's. AND no, the Marina crew are not all English - don't think I hav ever spoken to an English native on the phone there... Other branches though yes.

Yes Alismum is right that is the notice JBR residents have on our billboards. Aprilflower needs to read it carefully sat is a refundable security deposit and this notice has been there for a while now. I have seen many people having things delivered, myself included and as yet have not had to pay this refundable deposit. More to the point is they out up padded curtains in one of our lifts to protect the lift walls from movers and delivers etc but have now taken them down due to having installed tv screens with news broadcasts and advertising. That's where my maintenance is going I'd say!

We are a family of 5 attending a GEMS School and are very careful with our pennies also. Im sorry but I really think that there is no way that you can live on that much per month with out causing huge amounts of stress and heartache. Let alone be able to save anything or contribute to a retirement fund which we should all be doing anyway. I have friends who attend cheaper non-Gems schools, have the same budget but are always saying how hard it is and they have no money. To the point where they cannot meet for coffee.

Bird, sure no problem please give me your email and I will send you the pictures. Our stove was the same one we had before, the range hood was one that fit with the kitchens dimensions so source appliances first then you can do the lay out with IKEA. Yes, I don't believe Ikea dismantle so Jason at The Big Fit Out dismantled the kitchen and took it all away, they then laid our chosen tiles, painted, added sockets, changed roof, lights etc. Ikea came in did the cabinets, then The Bug Fit Out with their contact did bench top, followed by The painted glass splash backs. After that it was all the finishing touches.

I get migraines that are largely hormonal or when over tired. I recently saw a naturopath back in Australia and she has put me on magnesium. A naturopath might be worth a try. A natural remedy would be worth it's weight in gold compared to non-stop immgram.

I had a root canal carried out incorrectly before getting pregnant. A year later whilst pregnant it turned toxic and I had to have it cleaned and redone correctly. I was in excruciating pain and my jaw swelled to three times it's normal size. I was around 15 weeks pregnant pregnant at the time. My dentist would not give me anaesthestic as it was too risky to the baby. It was a very painful procedure without pain relief but it had to be done.

Why would you think that there is a rule that states you must continually invite the whole class to your child's birthday party? It's entirely up to you as a parent and no there is not an average amount you are expected to spend. Expected by whom? Other parents? I don't understand why you would even think there is an expectation. I'm not sure where these ideas are from but quite often the simpler the better. It's for the kids after all not the parents, although there are some parents in Dubai who seem to think this way.

Dangerous blonde you spoke about adolescence. An 8 year old is not in adolescence. Yes I agree with making their life easier but tell me if your daughter comes to you at 8 and says she's too hairy You will take her to get rid if it already? I have a friend with a daughter who refuses to wear skirts or bathing suits as she says she is too hairy ( she is of Arab background too). The daughter was not happy but now after talking through it all understands its a part of life and when she's old enough something will be done, but 8 is too young. Yes we all have our issues growing up its a fact of life. I have freckles so I remember being called horrible names but nothing could be done about that. There will always be cool girls and girls which your daughter will look up to with peer group pressure but does that mean we should let our daughters do what they do? Like most school classes here there is such a wide range of ages in classes with my middle daughter being the youngest. The maturity levels are very noticeable now. Some people might say yes it doesn't matter, what's the harm in giving our daughters these things but tell me isn't that where it starts? Ps - my daughters are half Indian and dark also but I don't think I will be rushing to take them to the beauty parlour for waxing or hair removal until I feel that they can cope with the emotional aspects of it all.

I've had the opposite issue. My daughter is 11, and clearly has the beginings of boobies. I have had a tough time getting her into bras. I got some from M&S which have been perfect for her. Strangely, not many girls wear a bra in her school and I have never heard her complain that she feels awkward for not wearing one. Conversations in her school center around whether someone is wearing the 'right' kind of bra as there are adult bras and kids bras. My daughter is apparently wearing the 'wrong' one :-) Same here I bought my 11 year old a bra as she needs it but has not worn it once. She still likes to wear the sports crop top things or singlet top with an inlay under things. I also have a 9 year old who wanted a bra top when I bought one for her older sister despite having nothing thee. It was just a novelty for her. She wore it a couple of times and then stopped. I think for a 8 or 9 year old without anything they don't need to have bras with cups yet. Why are we in such a hurry to make our kids grow up though? We have all been through peer group pressure, embarrassment of all sorts with our bodies growing up but we all came through it. It's a fact of life unfortunately!

DS is not doing a lot, but some teachers are trying to make an effort. There will be some fun things happening over the next 3 days, but he is really desperate to stay home. The problem is that so many have gone off early. I wish the parents would not do that. I agree I know people who are not sending their kids to school this week because they can't be bothered. What message does that send to your children? School is school as far as I am concerned. Everyone is tired and hot including the teachers. I just figure like my daughters last gymnastics lesson last night that my kids get the extra attention from the teachers as there is less kids in ten class. Gymnastics was lovely they did their routines but had a lot of fun playing with the teacher who was was happy and had less kids. Same with classes at school. The last part of school is such fun and a nice way of the year to finish for the kids.

Hi there. Also consider that many professions are not that advanced in Australia and some times moving there can mean the death of your career, unless you go and work in an area where Australia really excels. Sorry Im not sure where this is coming from? Please clarify what you mean by "not very advanced". Australians are some of the top professionals in the world whether they be working in Australia or overseas and there are endless possibilities to advance to extremely high levels in employment. That statement makes Australia seem like its living in the convict era again. For those that move to or back to Australia yes in some cases you may have to take a dive in pay or a position level , but that would be the case for most countries at the moment as we all lead a very cushy life in Dubai. Depends what you want really...

We had the intolerance test done also and came up with the same results, we also saw Dr Rolef, who ran all tests for intolerances again, celiac, lactose etc and we came up with the same thing again. Sometimes after cutting them out of the diet for 3-6 months they can have them again. We cut out all wheat (which it is often hard to find things without wheat so we went gluten free), no dairy or egg. Now after 6 months he can have small amounts of bread with only a very small stomach ache. Unfortunately no egg or dairy, still causes much bigger pain. If it helps her stomach to cut these things out until you see the doctor, do so as I know it really helped my DS. Tim Tam that's exactly what I am worried about too in case the pains return after cutting it all out. Hence the naturopath has said to take the vitamins to cure the stomach infection first. Im talking about specialist vitamins not just vitamin c etc... The naturopath believes that eventually she should be able to eat egg and dairy again. When the stomach was so badly affected with the pains then any allergy test would show up with more allergic results than normal.

Australia would win hands down over the UK for lifestyle. Yes tax is high and some people are doing it tough as prices have increased. Like everywhere people get on with their lives and do it in a place where they are happy and safe. People are still migrating to Australia as its a great place to be. I definitely would prefer to live in Australia than Singapore ( Singapore is way more expensive and becoming more so all the time and is changing a lot).

My daughter is 8 at the beginning of the year started to get major stomach pains. She was a little bit constipated but not majorly. Previously she would get a few pains on and off and minor runny stools until the pains became almost permanent. Did the test at a general clinic and they said she is allergic to egg and lactose intolerant ( i had suspected maybe she was lactose intolerant but egg was a big surprise) The tests showed she was slightly allergic to wheat. Dr did not tell us how to cure her pains other than stop eating egg and milk products. My other two have no allergies and its scary that one becomes so allergic all of a sudden. A big lifestyle change after making one pot dishes for all the family ( egg is in a lot of things). I started doing everything separately for her but its not easy. Don't really bake anymore and don't buy too many cakes or biscuits either and we are not missing it. My daughter has now just come to understand what she can and can't eat and unfortunately that means no cake, ice creams, chocolate etc at bday parties. If I make lasagna now I use lactose free Almari milk, and cooking is olive oil or sans lactose margarine from Waitrose. If she wants a chocolate treat or cookies and even cake I buy the lactose free chocolate and the cookies with no egg and milk you can get most supermarkets now. Sometimes she wants to try and see if she gets the pains and tastes something but the pains come. I have started to take her to an osteopath to see if that helps at all (suggested by a naturopath) Also I am trying to cure her stomach with natural herbal medicines in consultation with a naturopath from Australia. No pains now and she's very healthy and active. Cut out egg first and milk to see. I agree you need to get the correct test done to see about the gluten as its quite drastic. Willing to answer any questions as well if you have any.

Not sure where the idea that Singaporeans don't exchange gifts at Christmas comes from but they sure do. Locals of all races do, not every body but a large percentage do. Christmas is a special time in Singapore for a lot of locals, a huge Christian community there with great events on at the churches. The majority of gifts bought are gift wrapped on purchase or at a counter in the shop hence not much in the way of gift wrapping.

Don't know about Murjan other than that we walk through all the time and it's very convenient. 2 supermarkets, 3 pharmacies, beauty salons, dry cleaners and all the restaurants. It was in the boot and not visible but unfortunately they think they accidentally left the car unlocked for the first time ever. So Sanran you are not alone. The only country that I can honestly say that I have not seen a lot of teens smoking in is Australia. Out of my relatives, non of their friends smoke, no teens have smoked. It is seriously anti social even as a teen. It is almost like a habit of the lowest class. This is due to Australia being so diligent over the past 20 or so years with their anti-smoking advertising campaigns, laws etc.. I think its fantastic! In this part of the world where its "cool" to smoke shisha which is by far worse then normal cigarettes its going to be very difficult to change mind frames. I know friends who don't smoke but will go and puff away at a Shisha. Why? Doesn't look cool to me. Went to Abu Dhabi last week and found it utterly disgusting that they are still allowed to smoke in restaurants, cafes indoors, Costa coffee for lunch was revolting. Even having afternoon tea at Emirates Palace with people puffing away was not nice at all.....

a friend that used to live there and now lives elsewhere ( I wonder why??) said that when you want to change light bulbs its very hard to find the correct ones and you must go through the developers as when they were built they installed a special type and they would wait for weeks for light bulbs to get changed. You cant just buy them in Ace. Also the drains in the showers were sinking standing up whilst the tiled floor around them were starting to sink down.
