Depends on what you want from a school. If education is your first priority and you want your kid to go to ivy league university then you should put her in emirates international school in Meadows. Seriously? I haven't heard anything complimentary about that school at all! Just the way the traffic is managed puts me off. Yes Im not sure where this idea came from either. Each to their own but EIS in general both campus have lots of issues.

I think there is but I would advise going on line and just buying the two park Pass that includes both parks. We went last holidays and did this. You have 14 days to use both passes and you have the print out from buying online so you don't have to line up (especially at yas water world). I think it was the same or a little bit cheaper to do it this way. Unfortunately buying on line you can use the vouchers I think but I think I'd rather not have to line up in the heat.

Yes agree with Tim Tam I buy egg free mayo for my daughter from Organic Food Store also but it must be out of stock. I also buy "Go veggie!" Lactose free cheese slices from Waitrose at Marina Mall as well as lactose free "sans lactose" Fuit d'or lege'r margarine. My daughter has recently been diagnosed with egg and lactose allergy too. We have luckily been using the Al Marai Lactose free long-life milk but it has been out of stock for quite a few weeks which is very annoying. Luckily I still have two containers of it. I can usually get it from Geant or Al Maya supermarkets so if anyone has seen some please let me know.

People on A Friday until mid afternoon to early evening there is lots of parking available in the (unfortunately paid parking) and as I look out the window now at 1245 there are lots of spaces. It's not always as bad as you all think. Friday mornings are a lovely time to be down on The Walk when it's not as busy. People are still sleeping in from the night before. Yes JBR Traffic can be crazy sometimes but it's not always bad and at the moment I'm sick of people saying I don't know how you can live there.

Yes you can get it aT C4 and Geant. Beware that you can only buy it in cash which is a ridiculous policy. I think it costs 15 dhms to buy at both places, cheaper than getting say Moe vouchers (even though its only 5 dhms difference ) but if you are using other people's money eg. For teachers presents it all adds up. We usually get this for the teachers as they can use it overseas if they want too.

We have a long haired 8 month old. He is a constant eater too. We give him the hay, pellets and once a day, a different type of veg or apple. There is not much to do in the cage apart from eat but yes try not to over feed them. Once a day fill the bowls.

my children don't do any of this stuff and I actually think many of the tasks are too old for mine...I don't agree with the "age appropriateness" I think it's a great list and children of the ages specified can do all of those things, even the yonger age groups with maybe a little bit of help. I think that we as parents (yes I have 3 of my own) mollycoddle our kids these days. What were we all doing when we were young? Way more than what our kids are doing now. We are just making excuses for our kids like they are tired or they are too young and we should stop with the excuses. We are not helping our kids at all by doing everything for them.

because it is some where different to go to... and not everyone can afford to travel to all the different countries at Global Village. Yes some are not very authentic ( eg Singapore) but its still a fun place to go and explore and better than going to a shopping mall. For the most part, the only "authentic" thing about these stalls is the sellers happen to be from that country. Other than that, they're all selling similar items. I personally don't understand the hype about Global Village, anything you can get there you'll find at the mall, dragonmart, or during your travels....for similar prices. edited by Genkigirl on 01/04/2013

It's very kind of you to post a warning but do you not know that this has been going on for how long. We JBR residents have been living with this for a long time. Its not new. People rushing the red lights on the round abouts, rushing out of the car park to push their way into traffic. People pushing prams across the road and through the round about instead of walking a few more steps to use the walk way.A lot of the times the pedestrians dont seem to care about their own saftely either and just expect cars to get out of the way. Bizarre as I know when I walk on a busy road I always keep my eye out for traffic as I dont want to get hit. I have even seen a car going round the round-about and instead of continuing around again when they realised they were meant to turn, reversed back around the round about with us still coming....nothing will suprise me. It may be fantatsic when its all completed but until then.....

The even was for the Dubai Emirates World Cup on Saturday. Sheik Mo attended as well as lots of other dignitaries by the looks of it. We went down to the beach next to the club and saw the show. A Spanish jazz band, opera singer with horse riders in black cloaks looking spectacular with sparklers shooting from their backs as she sang. The fireworks were good too. My husband however was not impressed with the traffic. Coming back from work after going to the gym in the lakes he avoided the bridge over the marina leading to Sadaf/Murjan end and had went along the front if Maria mall and turned back, after waiting along the front in traffic for a long time he finally gets to the round about and the police tells him he can't turn despite living in Sadaf and must continue on down to TheWestin and do a U-turn wait in traffic and come back again. He was not a happy person at 800pm a night. If you clearly had a JBR sticker on you car they should let you turn in as you live there. Utterly ridiculous!

I do not believe that there are many parents who would 'qualify' to answer this question. If they have nothing to compare it to (like another school in the UAE, or a NFP school) or their own schooling (if they were in a Govt funded state school, not private) then their opinion may be slightly off. I think thats a bit of a generalisation! There are many parents who would be able to answer the question. My daughters have attended a GEMS School for the past 3 years and before that a different non-GEMS school for 2 years. There are also many children from each of their old school classes that have moved to our school so we all qualify. Compared to our previous school we love our GEMS school. Yes its big, classes sizes like a lot of other schools are big but my children are happy and like someone said below they get many opportunities. Comminication with parents is great and you can be involved as much or as little as you want. The facilities are excellent, well looked after, staff are happy, the school is constantly improving. No parent will ever be a 100% happy with their school but its not just about the school its everything including home life and what you as a parent teach your child about life also!

I would say that it does rain nearly every day these days, especially in the East Coast - Changi. There are huge Dengue Fever outbreaks at the moment from it raining so much. The Government are trying to combat the out breaks. They had become slack in policing stagnant water recently.

My daughter is 11 this year in yr 6 and unless she has a problem she does her homework herself and does it well. They should be well on the way to being independent by this age especially when going to high school next year. To do that much every night at that age is very sad for the child. Look how many years of study they still have ahead of them. I would be a big worked if I had to help my daughter every night. If you have other children too where would they get any time with you? I would talk to the school for sure.

yes I have tried recipes without copha, not fully the same but do-able. My mum brought some out from OZ for me one Christmas which was wonderful. Its worth checking but another Aussie friend once a few years back told me that the Supermarket near Mazaya Centre - Is it the Safestway???( Its on the Jebel Ali side of Mazaya Centre) stocked it.... this was a while a go but might be worth checking.

We went there for brunch for a special birthday a few weeks back. Excellent! Very reasonably priced for a brunch, the meat was amazing, they served it a your table and it was from all over, Australia, Argentina, NZ. The waiting staff are great. There is a salad buffet and desert however was only pineapple so you have o order al a carte desert if you can fit any in after eating all the yummy main courses. The pineapple was just nice however brought round on a skewer and marinated in nutmeg and a sugar mix. Delicious! Have also been there just for drinks. Stunning view of the marina and Palm way. Great place to take visitors to Dubai.

I have just been through a similar family situation where the husband we discovered had been planning it for a long time too and also reasonably suddenly sprung it on them. He hid lots of money and despite being from a western country his attitudes changed and he started throwing strange comments around. I helped my family member and her child leave the country quickly as we were worried just in case (despite us believing he did not want the child). You never know at the end of the day what people do under stressful situations. In your case Nippy he already has children you said back in the UK so it may be a different matter but I dont think you should stay here. Maybe he won't give you any money now and you say you don have much why would you want to stay here? I think you need to go home for moral support to have help to get over the shock of what has happened and seeing its happened very quickly. When and if you can with the help of you family fight him through the UK system. I don't know how it works there with maintenance for children etc. but I'm assuming like my country as its based on the same legal principals that they would not look on him very favorably and therefore if he ever wants to set foot in the UK again he would do the right thing???? I'm not sure however. I would not give in o his demands though, show him you are just as strong as he is. I wish you all the best, it's a horrible thing to have to go through but keep strong, you can do it especially for your children's sake.

My 10 yr old daughter returned last night from a 2 day stay at Um Al Qwain Ecoventure. They loved it! I heard a girl get off the bus and shout to her mum she did not want to come home. The food was great, and they all loved the activities, flying fox and Al Ain rafting was a huge hit as well as snorkelling. My daughter went last year for one night and also had Great time then. Of course they came back exhausted as they were very active.. I have not heard any bad reports from them and we had 6 classes go this week.

My guess it is a burst pipe somewhere. We had a similar problem but with a fungus growing in the bathroom. It turned out a water pipe burst 12 floors above our apartment and that caused the damp walls. In the end Idama removed the grout between the tiles, left it to dry properly and replaced it later on. A friend also had a burst pipe causing dampness in her bathroom and cupboards (also JBR). Taziz fixed the pipe and had to repaint the bathroom later. Contact Taziz to fix the problem. Just go on their website and register and make an appointment. Good luck! Here here! Taziz have fixed our leaks many times recently and all is fine now. Definitly give them a call and only 50dhms an hour too( unless you need parts).

Have to be honest, JBR didn't have the same vibe this year. Last year (40th anniversary) there was a real buzz down there, market, activities, music, decorated cars. I dressed my kids up, but we were one of only a few that were waving flags, no music, only a few cars with decorations. This is our 5th year going down there, and this year was a bit of a let down I thought. Yes I agree totally I think it was due to the cars not being as decorated as they were all aware of the ban on parades. However form 8pm onwards there was lots of activity with lots of teenagers out and abouts this year spraying anything and everything. Still very exciting but of course no where like last years special celerations. I can just see next year spray cans getting banned. It would be sad as this is a special part of National Day that everyone ( many locals were there last night with families, young kids etc spraying cars) and having fun. When else can they do this here?

it is absolutely insane there at dusk--I shop at Daily Gourmet at times, and I have to be careful as I don't want have a collision with a banshee chasing a ball, or on a scooter. I just think positive, and say, bustling children is better than complete isolation :) But really I am a little surprised--I have 3 friends who live in Murjan, and I quite like the folk I've run into. But then, I don't live there. I think really you are exaggerating! We live in Sadaf and people in our area are quite friendly. We and many people in our building always say hi etc when they get in .It was one of the things we commented on after moving from a different location how much friendlier they were. Have you thought that maybe the kids don't normally get to see dogs too much and dont know how to behave around them? All you have to do is say a nice please dont touch or explain to them how the dig needs to be treated. I think any area in Dubai will have its unfriendly neighbours so Its not nice just to say its JBR in general.

Once you have a rice cooker you will not go back! Most Asian people have it as an essential item in their kitchen. We have had our same rice cooker ( Panasonic ) for 15 years and it can be programmed to cook up to 8 hours in advance. I could not live without it. Yes, add chicken marinated in Oyster sauce along with spring onions thinly sliced to the cooker half way through cooking and its a yummy easy meal!

If you are really desperate go for the Newton one if its in your budget. Nothing in Singapore is too far. Just google the MRT line map and see where it is . There is a big hawker centre there so convenient for eating it may not be of bad. I used to work at Novena by we know the East Coast better.

Blimey has given you links that are in your budget to ok hotels including the one I gave you Robertson at Clark Quay, but whether they all allow 2 kids as most hotel rooms have the double or two twins and allow for the one extra rollaway bed is a different matter. The Park Royal is quite a good location though. No I have not been to the Robertson and it does seem older but I feel that really for your budget you won't get much else unless you pay more. Geylang area will have cheaper hotels but it is known for its luverrly night life and I would not stay there with my kids.

Newton is a bit out but it's on the MRT line so no problem getting around. On booking.com there is a family room at the Robertson Quay hotel. It's an older hotel and definitely not 5 * but it allows 2 kids in the room and is in a good location and under 1000dhms. Very rare these days to find anything in Singapore for under 1000dhms. Don't forget every price you must add taxes. Good luck!

we bought this year and dont look back. Money now coming to us and not in someone elses pocket( a lot of it). Could not be happier. Prices are going up too so If you are looking into it do it asap. We could have bought back home but the prices there were out of this world, so what was the point of being in debt up to the neck if here we can still enjoy your life. One word of advice, its very stressful finding a place and buying here but worth it in the long run, but dont buy something that is going to cost a fortune and cause you hardship. Be very savvy!

Hi just a question? who old is your DD? my sister when back in Australia was getting migraines from a very young age and I think it was 14 when she was recommended to go on the birth control pill to control the hormones ( not for contraception and she did not use it as such) but it helped. Even starting so young did not affect her fertility for later in life. Just a thought. She and I still get the occasional migraines but no where near like she used to when she was a teenager.

It will rain a lot in that part of the world any time but its something that cant be helped and after living in Dubai how wonderful to see rain and green in a beautiful tropical environment. We are going to Penang in Dec and last went there a couple of years a go. Try Langkawi or Pangkor Laut all nice places.
