I would say that as long as your Salary Cert and Employment contract are signed and stamped by the employer they will be fine. That's certainly all DH needed for my visa.

- Breakfast at Arabian Tea House in Bastakiya, followed by the coffee museum and a look round Bastakiya's shops & galleries - Dinner & Outdoor cinema at JBR - Afternoon tea at one of the new Palm hotels since her last visit (maybe Jumeirah Zabeel Saray?) - a pampering afternoon? Maybe Cleopatras at Wafi? With pool/massage/mani-pedi and tea? - [b'>The Farm at Al Barari for lunch or breakfast[/b'> - Sharjah Blue Souq V impressed at Granny's tour of the world!!! If she's here during May they are doing a special "camel menu"

Sorry can't help with the buying in Mauritius, but DH and I have spent the last few months trying to decide on a very similar situation. After much consideration and discussion (some of it VERY heated!!!) we have ended up looking closer to home in France. The idea of having a lovely bolt hole somewhere gorgeous like Mauritius has been thrown around many times, but it all came down to our retirement plans and how would we feel being so far away!!!!!

to be honest it would need to be wherever is the quickest... that has a direct flight from dubai... would really appreciate the contact details of any agents you might have used as well thanks again Much as I love the North, I would suggest getting married in the South. Sorry I can't help with any agents though. Have you tried any of the big hotels around Larnaca?

My daughter is 8 almost 9 and we have a chore list and certain expectations that she has to comply with before she gets her pocket money, the chores mainly consist of making her bed, hanging out the washing, clearing the table and polishing the lounge, if she doesn't do it there is a deduction from her allowance. In regards to expectations, as I work I expect her to have had a shower by the time that I get home, her homework prepared for me to do with her, she has to be polite and considerate to the driver and nanny, go to bed on time and so on. This works for me but may not suit all, some of her friends are getting in excess of 1000aed A maid in the making - poor child..... Where on earth do you get that from !!!!!!!!!! All I can see is a well brought up child in the making :)

We bought a place 11years ago in France. Have a look at www.greenacres.com These place are for sale through the owners, so hopefully you will avoid having to pay the agents fees ( in France to buyer pays these ) Thanks for this I'm looking now. I did see a few on rightmove which said 'fees paid'

Thanks for your advice Tallybalt. I have been looking at properties around there. Being able to walk to local shops and bars is one of my main priorities as that's exactly what we'll be doing when we retire :biggrin: Yes NL I was VERY surprised at the prices :biggrin:

We're looking at buying a property in Brittany, initially to run as a holiday let, but then to retire to in 5-8 years time. Does anyone have any good suggestions on where to start our search? I would like it close enough to a village to be able to walk to the shops. TIA

If you want to see a good honest British dentist to start with I can highly recommend Dr Neil Mitchel at Nicholas & Asp, Al Manzil Centre. He may not be the cheapest, but he's a fantastic dentist.

So interesting - so there has been no time change at all with this one GE? Was there a difference in price/make/country of origin with the one which works? No the one which always gained was a John Lewis own brand one and more expensive. I'm just hoping that this one doesn't go the same way.

I started most of my driving out here going for interviews. Not a good combination!!! What I did find was invaluable though, was my SatNav :) If you are able to get one in before you leave home, a defensive driving course will help.

You can either rely on public transport ( Buses, taxis and the Metro) or bite the bullet and drive It was a huge shock to me too as i come from a small village in a small city where every drives nicely You get used to it. It is always good to have your independance as i couldnt rely on public transport especially when i can drive and have a car I did most of my "learning to drive in Dubai" on a Friday morning when the roads were quiet Half the battle is knowing where to go etc so [b'>i drove to every mall[/b'>. This is turn got me used to the road system and local landmarks :lol:

DH had his upper back operated on by Dr. Zbiggy J. Brodzinsky at the Dubai Bone and Joint Centre. He was fantastic and did the op only as a last resort. Perhaps worth getting a second opinion

Just as an aside on this DH being a pain decided that when his photocard ran out at the end of last year, he was going to renew it no matter what. We used our home address in the UK and it arrived within a couple of weeks!! And before anyone starts on me he was just doing it for the sake of trying, it's never used. <em>edited by Geordie expat on 27/04/2015</em>

Sorry I can't remember exactly where to find it, but the idea is that when you get your UAE licence, they should really take your UK one from you. Obviously they don't actually do that, but that's what I was informed when I "exchanged" mine. The DVLA website is an absolute pain to search on :angry: <em>edited by Geordie expat on 26/04/2015</em>

Ours does, but we pay a slightly higher premium for preventative work. We get around 75% of the costs back up to a certain amount. Check with the policy.

Also do you mind if I ask what agencies you went through for temping? Thanks I think you'll find a lot of companies use LinkedIn now, saves on agency fees!! I've been contacted a few times via LinkedIn. For temping I used Miller Hay in DIFC

Have any of you tried looking for temp roles to start with. That was how I EVENTUALLY found my current position. This meant that the agency I used could guage what my actual work was like and how suitable I was for the roles advertised. I also don't have a degree and had to rely on almost 40 years experience, so I had age against me also. And yes a lot of it is who you know, but saying that I have also made good friends with some of the recruiters I used :)

I would say no. SZR in the morning is at a standstill with traffic. There seems to be so many more cars than last year Al Khail is also getting worse, but that seems to be more waggons than cars now :( That road scares me. SZR is stop/start all the way down. Strangely enough I prefer it to SZR. I don't feel as closed in!!!

We went to the Polyclinic at Mirdif to see our regular doctor there when we needed a form filled in and stamped to swim at the Hamdan pool. Didn't cost us anything. Added to say that was 18 months ago. <em>edited by Geordie expat on 15/04/2015</em>

Just one thing to add. Don't stick to Dubizzle only, try propertyfinder.ae too. We found a great agent through there while we were still back in the UK and he was the one we used to find our villa. Some do tend to stick to one area only. DH's company paid for us to stay in a hotel until we could move into the villa, but it was only for four weeks. There was no way they'd pay until our things arrived. We borrowed a blow up bed, bought two of everything we needed including a couple of camping chairs. We didn't ship our furniture over so it was easy just to buy what we needed here and it was delivered within a week.
