Hey Geordie, I think the towel is a really good idea, I was thinking of trying to wrap him in one to contain his paws. The plunger thing that the vet demonstrated is good, as long as I can get him by the scruff and shoot it thru his front teeth.... trouble is he's out most of the time cos of this blasted work, bit stressful, I'm going to try what you suggest when he appears later on, beyond that I think he might have to do a week in the vet. He won't be a happy chappy. :( The towel idea works with our two and saves me getting scratched to bits. The plunger is fine, but I find them easier when there are two of you. At least if you administer it yourself you can try and make suer it goes right to the back of his throat, less chance of it being spit out. Keep his mouth closed once it's in there and once he's licked his nose you're done :) I know this sounds awful, but sometimes a very gentle blow on their nose makes them swallow as well as rubbing the throat.

Izzy, that's really kind of you, I'm in Ranches, but the main problem I've got is keeping him inside at the moment cos there's some construction going on and he won't stay in the villa or garden whilst this is happening. The vet showed me how to get him by the scruff and pull his head back, then slot the plunger between his teeth and bob's your uncle. Needles to say, it looked fairly straightforward then... Thanks again Izzy, I have a feeling that this is going to end up with a week's stay at the vet's, if I can't get him to stay inside We have a large bath towel with a hole in the middle, just large enough for a cats head!! One they are wrapped up in that, making sure their legs are well contained. It's under one arm, some butter on the pill and then open the mouth and put it right to the back of the throat. Sounds horrendous I know, but it does work as long as you keep their mouth closed, once you'e administered the pill.

I was an only child and I don't feel I suffered in any way. All of my friends funnily enough were girls who only had male siblings, or were only children themselves. It never occurred to me to wonder why I had no brothers or sisters, perhaps because I didn't have much of an extended family. My two cousins were in their 20s when I was born. Also at that time people very rarely had more than two children. I'm sure he will be fine, just ensure that he has perhaps one or two special friends he can always have playdates with. <em>edited by Geordie expat on 23/03/2015</em>

The pending election could also be blamed! In a few months a potentially new leader - will they make the changes needed to make [b'>Britain Great again[/b'>! Have you all registered to Vote? Very unlikely any of those in the running will ever be ale to do that. do you think its ethically correct to vote in an election for a country that you DO NOT LIVE in or PAY TAXES in? My eldest DD is 29 and absolutely sure that she does not ever want children of her own and I totally respect her decision. She has a number of friends with children and some expecting and she is more than happy to play "aunty" to them all. This is something I definitely was not expecting as she loves children, but it is her decision and I will have to get used to it.

I would rather be stapled than have your bags taken off you. i think it is Lulu that takes your bags off you and keeps them in a cubby. Then you get home and find the tag in your bag to remind you to pick your bags up. So you need to go all the way back again. AAAAAAAAAAAAARGH. Did that once in Homecentre, but at least we only got as far as the car :) I don't have a problem with having my bag stapled either. I'd much rather keep them with me than leave them where anything could happen.

GE I felt like that at Talise Al Qasr - which was a gift from the boss. Felt ignored and not shown the area very well at all. Funnily enough one of the Spa's I went to was at Zabeel Saray and similarly to you most of it was paid for. If it hadn't been I would have felt very short changed. I couldn't fault the treatment, it was the overall experience which put me off. <em>edited by Geordie expat on 19/03/2015</em>

I'll be interested to see any answers to this as I've done three and I've yet to find a place that really looks after you once the treatments are over. One of my three did, but I think that was because we are regulars there and all the staff know us. The other two 'big' hotels just sort of left us to get on with things once we had finished our treatments. Not really showing us the various facilities or where anything else was.

What a great thread. Lulu hypermarket has a small selection of goodies (incl. chocolate) from the UK and the US. Both Lulu and Geant stock [i'>some[/i'> [b'>Iceland frozen products[/b'>. You never know what you might find if you have a look around. Recently I've found Glebe Farm gluten free oats and cassava chips at Geant; Stonewall Kitchen Roast Garlic Bread Spread at Al Madina and Virginity Soap (!) at Swiss Mart, Wasl Square ;) So does C4

Hi, I am moving back to Dubai later this year. I have just been refereed to a specialist at home for two dental implants - but the specialist says that he doesn't want to rush the procedure and it would take around 5 months to complete!! Anyway, I have seen a few recommendations for dentists on here, but I also wanted to check - does anyone know if they will put you to sleep for the procedure? I am a wimp when it comes to this stuff but as its my front teeth I don't have any option! Thanks in advance Just checked for you and Nicholas & Asp do have the facility for general anaesthesia at the Al Manzil branch. Yes they are at the higher end of the price range, but if as you say you're a "wimp" surely it will be worth the cost. does anyone know, are the small Carrefour Markets equally priced than the big Carrefours? The general pricing is exactly the same. The only difference is that they don't have as many special offers on. When I need a lot of household items like washing powder and cleaning stuff, I tend to go to one of the larger ones.

Can't help with the being put to sleep bit, but why not try Dr Neil Mitchell at Nicholas & Asp, Al Manzil, he may say no, but it's worth an ask. This reminds me! ...I am moving to jvt soon, where do most of you shop if you live there? spinneys is a little pricey, so does anyone know where is the next affordable supermarket like Carrefour or similar in good distance? Tia! Depends on what we're doing at the time, but if we shop on a weekend, we tend to go to the Green Community DIP. There's a Carrefour Express, Park n Shop and Choitrams. None of them next to each other but it works for us. We can also always make a visit to A&E and MMI while we're there. :biggrin: There's also a Milestone supermarket in JVT, bit pricey, but handy if you need something urgently, and a small supermarket under one of the blocks of apartments on the main through road, along with a pharmacy. <em>edited by Geordie expat on 16/03/2015</em>

we discovered the best thing is make visits to many areas to see where you feel the most comfortable then we decided that as it was going to be empty for parts of the year we thought it safer in an area that could be monitored, water leaks etc more than break ins. We have made lots of new friends through the golf club, and as we have no family in our home countries we feel that cyprus for us is beginning to feel like home. The perfect thing is that it's only 4 hours from Dubai should we want to pop over. True, but on the other hand we don't want to be living somewhere that is full of holiday makers for at least six weeks of the year. That was the main reason we chose the North, empty beaches all year round, peace and quiet :) If you are really interested in Cyprus Chezmoi I would definitely recommend at least two or three trips over there at the minimum to visit various different areas.

Yes, but do you not want to do something different once you retire. Hopefully you'll still have time to go back home later on. We are building a small but beautiful (we think so LOL) house and would like to enjoy it before we get too old :) This will be our base. Small so it is easily maintained, and so we can lock it up and travel when we feel like it, but at other times be able to spend time with family or walk to the pub. We have properties in other places we love. They are on long term lease at the moment, but we will convert them to short term lets come retirement so we can use them for parts of the year. May just be me then, not wanting to go back to our house in Kielder and all the rain :(

We have over the years here watched quite a few friends and acquaintances retire to places that were not home, only for them to regret it. The loneliness, being far from family (especially missing the grand children), not knowing the language, away from good health care, were the main reasons quoted. This made us think long and hard as we initially had similar plans to them. For us, growing old away from family is now no longer an option. We will move back home once we retire. Yes, but do you not want to do something different once you retire. Hopefully you'll still have time to go back home later on.

Am madly researching at the moment so any tips most appreciated! TIA We recently bought a wonderful property on Aphrodite Hills, with stunning views over the golf course and the Mediteranean. The reason we bought there is that its a gated community, and as we only use it at the moment for holidays, its easy to lock up when we leave but its monitored whilst we are not there. We used Colin at Premier Residences, covering all of the Greek part of the island his email address is [email protected] .He was so experienced and as GE mentioned its a must to have a property that has its title deeds, but he will walk you through everything. As we were on a holiday when we saw the property that we finally bought, he suggested it would be better for us to meet a solicitor to arrange for him to have Power of Attorney, so he drove us to the solicitors and this made things much smoother when it came to signing the final papers.We didn't have to fly back. I couldn't recommend them enough, very professional, and friendly. We really love the island, after Dubai and the traffic its a breath of fresh air. We were there at Christmas and only passed one car on the road one day! Looking forward to our next visit at Easter. It reminds me of how Dubai was 25 years ago, sleepy but very friendly. Bear in mind Chezmoi, Aphrodite Hills is on the Greek side of the island !

I've heard that the really good stuff (master and 1:1 qualities copies) are not available at the market. It is possible to view them at some apartments near by. But to get an access there, it is necessary to know these people directly. Apparently even if your friends gives you the number of Mr X and you call, they will not reply as your number is not on their phone book... edited by marykar on 12/03/2015 Not true I'm no expert, but the stuff we bought a couple of weeks ago looked pretty good to our eye.

All in all it's a lovely place, plenty of walks, wildlife and fab food and in the winter you could spend the morning sking and the afternoon on the beach If you ever do get around to buying somewhere we can recommend a good solicitor. Thanks so much GE for all this very useful info and offer of solicitors contacts, I found Ian Smith RE online and wondered if they were reliable, they seem to be a British firm. Do you also happen to know if the internet is up to international standards in the north these day, the only info I can find about northern Cyprus internet is not that recent. It seems to be good in the south but the north seems not as advanced? Thanks for pointing me in the right direction with property agents and areas, off to explore some more :) All of the agents we dealt with were either Brits or Turkish Cypriots with family from London :) We have no issues where we are near Famagusta and neither do our friends in Lapta and Guzelyurt, so that covers a wide area. There are also a number of Universities out there and from what I've heard there are no problems for them.

She does have family here but we don't know the employers. The closest would be our friends as she knows their maid through play dates (children's, not theirs ;) That sounds the perfect solution for your hols as hopefully they would also keep an eye on her for you.

I can't be the carrier you use for the vets. It must be a travel approved crate. Doesn't have to be wood though. As long as the pet can stand up and turn around in it, also make sure it's long enough. Our JRT got turned away at Manchester Airport coming here as they felt his crate was a fraction too short. We don't have a safe at home HC but maybe it's a good time to get one :) But then do I tell her the code to the safe? Assume not... in which case what's the difference for her? I would say the difference is that you're not an office that is closed for the weekend. If she needs her passport in an emergency you'll be available.
