I thought I had read that Mina Al Salam is kind of toned down, and not too wild. Maybe I have the wrong one in mind? I enjoy both toned down brunches as well as lively. But after seeing photos of some brunches, I think there are a few I would never want to go to. One particular photo comes to mind of a woman hiking up her hemline and posing with the chef...was just surprised the venue itself was advertising that on their FB page. I'm no pearl-clutcher, trust me, but if I want that kind of environment for that price, well, places in Vegas come to mind, and they serve better food! I think we'll stick with what we know and she can just put up with the "old fogeys" place ;)

I'll be intrested to hear what you think about it and whether it is worth the money. I have my DD coming out next month :) and we're planning taking her to our usual place for brunch, but feel she may want to experience something a little more OTT

I think Brits have always been a nation of expats, it's something in the genes, For many it's a sense of adventure, for others a case of the grass appearing greener.and for some a chance of a new beginning. In any case it doesn't mean that Britain is in such dire straits that leaving is the best option, and the majority do eventually go home. In spite of its failings (and don't we Brits love to expound on them, especially from a distance) UK is still for the majority a very good place to live. [b'>Here in Cyprus [/b'>there are many expats who have chosen to retire here because of the weather and easy going lifestyle, but very many of them eventually return home because it is only there they can get the support they need in old age. The majority of the complaints about the state of Britain stem from a very raised expectation of state provisions, the NHS and transport systems are the usual targets, but when you live somewhere these givens do not exist, then Blighty starts to look a little less grim. edited by Livelytrish on 30/12/2014 Hopefully that will be us in 4/5 years time :)

I have no doubt there are and as you say a lot of expats too. All I am so hacked off about is the fact that when you're honest with them it just gets thrown back in your face. I sympathise with you but there must have been a reason why they refused you. Yes, he was getting a less than 1k a month (taxed) pension which they said was enough to live on, but he still had to sign on twice a month and prove he was looking for work, which of course he was. edited by Geordie expat on 29/12/2014

That was one of the reasons we left the UK. Then [b'>you see the likes of people coming into the country [/b'>claiming all types of allowances for themselves and their families, some of whom were still living abroad, it really makes me wonder what the government is thinking about. They obviously don't care. Sorry where do you "see" this ? In the Daily mail ? Errrr no. I still have friends in certain parts of the UK where this does actually happen and it's been common knowledge for years. They bring their families across, get some sort of work and then the wives and kids go back, once they've proved they were all living here. It's never checked again, or hardly ever. edited by Geordie expat on 29/12/2014 Actually its a well known fact that Eastern Europeans bring more to the UK economy than they take out. Migrant workers tend to be young people looking for work and a better life. I'm not saying that they're not, we used to have a lot where we lived in The Fens. It's the ones who have learned how to fiddle the system that spoil it for the rest and there are certainly plenty of them. That's why we were so hacked off with the UK. We've both paid tax for over 30 years (and some of it at the higher rate) and when it came to the crunch and we needed just a little help from the state to get us through a rough patch it was completely refused!!! edited by Geordie expat on 29/12/2014

They obviously don't care. Makes me wish the UK would adopt the UAE policy of looking after your own first! Something to be said about that. Many countries could learn a lot from how the UAE works. You're dead right there. If all the people who go into the UK had to jump through the hoops we do to live here it would be a much better place. To be honest I'm hoping that when we leave in a few years we can afford to retire somewhere else.

That was one of the reasons we left the UK. After having both been employed almost permanently for 30 years each, we were made redundant. Because DH receives a small pension, no more than GBP1k per month, as he is taxed on it, they wouldn't pay him job seekers allowance. I was paid the minimum as I managed to get some temp work. I didn't say anything about people talking behind each other's backs? I said people would be chatting to each other on PM/email, instead of on here. As we all know, the introduction of FB groups has led to a decline in traffic on here. Other forums/FB groups are different in that they are there actively to encourage chit chat. EW has always [b'>discouraged chit chat [/b'>and for that reason people have been drawn to other places where they can freely chat/meet up. Once EW introduces a PM function people will simply PM/email the person they want to talk to, and take any further chat or meet up from there. Thereby reducing the need to chat on here. Thereby reducing traffic further. Thereby making EW the most dull forum in the world. That is something I have never understood. Often a 'chit chat' thread can become quite interesting and it's a way to get to know people, especially when you work all day. And yes I know I shouldn't be on here at work, but when it's quiet or I'm on lunch it would be nice just to she what's going on. I've had a few threads deleted just because they turned into a chat and yes they probably were boring to others, but there's no need to scroll through the lot just ignore and go on to the next.

Haseff just to let you know if we were a few years younger we would definitely go for one of these. We called into the sales office at the weekend and were really impressed. They're not releasing any properties until the whole thing is handed over, unlike JVT which is still a builders nightmare. All I need to do now is hope that they're not too expensive to rent if any come straight on the market at the end of next year

When returning to the UK to live permanently again and you have a UK license that has not been renewed or has wrong address from the time you left the UK you apply for a renewal stating you have returned recently from abroad. If you don't have any driving license you apply for your first one and get a provisional license and take a test. I'm not being awkward here, but this would mean DH and I landing back there and not even being able to hire a car to get us home!!! You can drive on any foreign license for up to six months while you sort out the UK one. Thanks I didn't realise that. I just assumed that the UAE licenses would be returned along with everything else when we leave

Firstly we have never used our UK licenses since we moved here and secondly it's only the photo card I've renewed. Yes we used our UK address as the actual question was how long have you lived at this address, not where have you lived for the past three years. We also pay tax in the UK so if they check with HMRC they will soon find that out. So they do ask about the address you are actually currently living in and how long you have lived there. Looking at the notes on the form For renewal of photocard online it says you are asked for details of addresses of where you have lived over the last three years. It also says you need to be resident in the UK. "To renew online, you need: a valid UK passport to be a resident of Great Britain - there’s a different service in Northern Ireland to pay £14 by MasterCard, Visa, Electron, Maestro or Delta debit or credit card (there’s no fee if you’re over 70 or have a medical short period licence) addresses of where you’ve lived over the last 3 years your current driving licence, including the paper counterpart if you have a photocard licence (if you don’t have your licence you must say why in your application) your National Insurance number to not be disqualified from driving" I would have thought its a bit risky to say you are resident at a UK address when you are not. Surely they have ways of checking. It certainly didn't ask for his NI number and anyway we've done it now and they've taken the cash, so all we can do is sit back and wait. As I mentioned if they check with HMRC we are still tax payers in the UK although they do know we're out here. Also I think he was just being a pain as the actual question was how long have you lived at this address and as far as he is concerned the UK is still his permanent address. Men!!!!! edited by Geordie expat on 28/12/2014 So if I have understood correctly, he has declared himself a non resident to HMRC but a resident to DVLA. Lets hope they do not check with each other. He's told HMRC where we are, but he also still a UK tax payer which he has obviously declared. Anyway hypothetically, how do people manage when they return to the UK permanently and have no licecnse to start with???

We've just renewed DH photocard license online. No issues. We're you able to use the online form from Dubai and you gave an address in Dubai? It normally does not work outside of the UK except possibly with a VPN it might. Just used the online form and once his new photo card arrives we'll return the old one. We gave our UK address

Yes the villas in JVT are more modern than Springs and most of the initial snags have been sorted now. it is still quite a building site around the edges as they are in the process of completing various apartments blocks and eventually a shopping mall. As far as I am aware there will never be a communal pool in JVT, a lot of people have built their own in the gardens. Yes there are one or two very small playgrounds, but nothing to suit kids over about the age of 6/7. A number of people have joined Jumeirah Islands Club, there is quite a lot at Motor City which is about 5 minutes away, or there's always The Polo Club near Arabian Ranches, which is very nice. We personally like it as we have pets and the villas are well separated so we never feel we are disturbing or being disturbed by our neighbours. Regards commuting to Media City it's a breeze :)

If I can find the article again I'll post it. Strangely enough it appears to be people with no credit whatsoever who are targetted. They just cost banks money!!! I can remember when my DD opened her first bank account she was advised to take out a credit card even though she didn't want one and use it at least once before cutting it up. That way the bank knew she had credit and she also had a credit score for any future needs. This is true, "good" customers are not those who pay their bill, have no debts or overdrafts. I think you have hit the nail on the head, he said that two weeks ago he had a call from them offering him a credit card and he declined. Two weeks later they close his account. Connection? edited by Di@DXB on 23/12/2014 I would say there's definitely a connection there. He's of no value to them :( As I said I can't fault them either back home or out here. Mind we have consolidated all our finances with them, mortgage, car loan the lot.

This just makes me wonder, what would other people do if it happened to them and the plug was pulled on all their money through no fault of their own? Well that is exactly what the danger is to everyone who banks with them! They can totally screw up people's lives big time. edited by Di@DXB on 23/12/2014 Appears from what I read last night any bank can do this to you though, if they decide to.

Yes you are right Mannikat, a closed account cannot be reopened, I'm assuming, perhaps wrongly they have been on the line to the CB to hurry this along, I think they are only seeking to reinstate his funds back to him, not sure how by cheque or by offering a new account, not sure he will want an account with them now anyway. Its all a bit fuzzy and he is going back today to try to get the exact picture of where his money actually right now. It looks like as you say he is going to have to run around doing a lot of paperwork to get an account operational again somewhere. As usual bank messes up-customer has to jump through hurdles. The day needs to arrive when banks realise they would not be there without our money. Although I bank with said bank, if this was me there is no way I would be going back to them. The problem out here as we all know it the hoops you have to jump through to open another account. it's not like in the UK where you can just walk into a branch. Is there no way they can let him have his money in cash as they have admitted it was their fault. At least that way he could still go on holiday and then worry about a new account when he gets back. edited by Geordie expat on 23/12/2014

Positive Paws at al quoz (Laura and Amie) are excellent and only use positive reinforced methods. Please stay clear from Caesar Milan type trainers who use harsh punitive methods which do no good for any animal. If you want to try training your dog by yourself, the late Dr Sophia Lin, Dr Ian Dunbar, Dr Patricia McConnel are just a few great behaviorists who have put up loads of videos on youtube and have info on their respective websites on understanding your dogs body language and working with them to make a well behaved pet. Kikopup and Victoria Stilwell are also great trainers on youtube. Please don't even look at Ceasar Milan. I can totally second the girls at Positive Paws, they do a wonderful job.

Probably because there are so many conflicting stories here. Friend of a friend who was living with her Emirati boyfriend fell pregnant, they got married before the baby was born, so dates didn't correspond and didn't encounter any problems with the birth certificate.

As I mentioned it's highly unlikely that any bank would do this to someone who is actually paying them money in the long term. It's the people who have no loans, mortgages or credit cards who are looked at first, unfortunately.

I know it's like closing the door after the horse has bolted, but this was one of the reasons we kept our UK account and transfer most of our money either there or offshore. If heaven forbid this should ever happen to us we still have UK cards to get hold of ready cash. It appears that any bank can do this to you and you have no recourse Just to add, nowadays banks always look at customers accounts that aren't making them any money first and they are the first to get the chop. Makes more sense in some respects to go back to saving cash under your matress :\: edited by Geordie expat on 22/12/2014 Good advice GE, what offshore bank would you recommend that does not have horrific minimum deposit levels?
