Not Yank, he's British, he is on the way to the bank now. Sounds fishy to me, although if he has never had a CC or a loan they could use that against him. Does he bank with them back in the UK?

Even if it was premier they should have given warning not just shut it down by sms message, this is ridiculous. No I totally agree. Has he been able to contact anyone at the bank?

A colleague has just asked me where would be the best place to take his children to see christmas decorations and christmassy themes here. A Mall would be fine or anything like that. I'm ashamed to say I couldn't tell him as I haven't been in any of the Malls this month. I was wondering what the Souk Madinat or Dubai Mall was like?

Sorry but I am useless with road names. All I know is that is runs from the very edge of JLT straight up to the E311 and yes you end up going towards AD. You have to get across the E311 to go round the dreaded roundabout :\: before you can go back towards Sports City/VH etc. We used it the other night to come down from there to get to Marina Mall. Couldn't believe how easy it was. If it makes sense to you when we came down it joined the flyover which takes you to the Marina etc

And is that different from the road that goes to Sports City/VH? Or is there a direct road up to SC/VH? The closest direct road to there is the Al Khail

there used to be a back road to JLT along past the Gemplex buildings. Is that not there anymore? Also I'd LOVE to know the routes of all these new roads out the back of JLT. When you say one goes up to VH, which one is that? And is it literally into VH and nowhere else? Or can you get on MBZ road from it? There's a new road opened which comes up from the Ibn Battuta end of JLT and takes you onto the E311, then if you want to go back over you need to go round the Green Community roundabout :\: edited by Geordie expat on 18/12/2014 That's what my colleague said Maybe i will try that one day - want to go to Dubai pet food - stroe....... will get a full tank of petrol in case i end up in Salalah or Saudia That's dead easy using the new road and then into DIP from the roundabout. Only thing is that you can't get into the Green Community at the first turn now, you have to go to the second one

Izzy depending on where you want to be on the Al Khail, it's probably not worth it, having to go up towards he E311 before you can actually get onto it

There is a new road at the back of JLT that I take to Al Fay Road/Victory Heights but not sure if that helps That's the one I was thinking of, just not sure exactly where it goes, or how you would get onto the Al Khail

From my point of view, I wouldn't worry about the contribution for the wedding. It's your day and you want to do it your way. If your family want to invite relatives you wouldn't recognise even if they stood in front of you, let them pay towards a party after your reception. That way you have the ceremony and reception you want and your family get to have a party later in the day

Just as an aside to this thread. Do you guys ever check the official crash test ratings before you buy a car, especially out here. My DH usually handles that department and he is pro-Pajero.....anything we should know?? No not really as they have got better since 2013.

But will they adapt the rent calculator? Prices there are just out if control. If they don't adapt it downward, many landlords will still see fit to increase the rent. edited by Oopsiedaisy on 18/12/2014 I very much doubt it, but what happens if some LL accept lower rents, won't the rental calculator take this into account?

I doubt you'll be able to negotiate a temp rate, I never could as they always had someone else ready to accept it. It all depends on whether the money is going to be worth it, once you've paid your working expenses, travel, lunches etc. Alos if you don't actually need to work why do it, unless you really need the stimulation. I'd certainly prefer to be at home while the kids are little.

It wouldn't GE, because he still couldn't travel while his visa was being renewed - whether he had a 2nd passport for extra business travel purposes or not. :nerd: I know, but what I'm saying is that his passports would last longer this way

DH Visa is in his old passport and has no problems with this. On another note, why doesn't he apply for a second passport for business travel? It's not a problem having a visa in one passport and using another. the issue is applying for a renewal on one passport but enetering on another. UNLESS he has space left in existing passport for the UAE visa in which case do that, and then later on apply to put visa in new passport. Having a 2nd passport in this instance will not help. You can't exit the country while your visa renewal is under process, even if you have another passport and use that one. No but it would help preventing this happening again in the future

[b'>Did anyone read how the female victim ended up being shot?[/b'> I read that the male victim lost his life as he tried to overpower the hostage-taker, so go shot in the fight. But, I did not read any claim that the hostage-taker shot the female, only that she had been killed. Was it a case of police going in shooting, and she was hit in the crossfire? As it said they went in shooting, throwing brandades. The entire siege was farcical on the hostage-takers behalf. 6 people escaped, he took the wrong flag so one of his negotiation requests was for the ISIS flag... come on. The police could have walked in at 10am or snuck in in free clothes, armed, (apparently there was an easy entry/exit point if 6 people broke free) and taken him down. The #illridewithyou hashtag is a very lovely thing for the public to do. Just read that the poor woman died in hospital of a heart attack. No mention of her being shot.

We only found out when they asked for our boarding pass at the till. If I remember, all we could take through was chocolate. Also when we got to Schipol there was quite a lot of booze having to be dumped, before people got on their connecting flights. I remember seeing that at Charles De Gaulle 2 years ago. Some poor woman was having a bag confiscated. I wonder why they don't seal them at DXB edited by sarahlou123 on 15/12/2014 I really don't know as it's the only airport I'v ever used that doesn't. It pained me to see so much going to waste :(

We couldn't buy booze when we went back via Schipol. Purely because they don't seal the bags. Had no problem on the way back.

You could have bought a villa on the Palm for 2.6 million dirhams in 2001 now they are upwards of 15 million dirhams, which is an increase of almost 500%. I look at property as a investment. With all due respect I can't see the North of England or Eastern Europe property prices rising at the same rate as the UAE. Probably not, but who is going to spend 15Mil on a property that may or may not be standing in 15/20 years time. For that price I would want something I could hand down to my family. Also as I have said, what happens when the jobs run out here and you end up with a property you can't sell and you have to leave urgently?

You only need to look at where Dubai was 40 years ago to see buying a property here is a no brainer. You can buy a great property here for far less than you can in the UK and rent it out for far more, yet people are buying in the UK and renting it out for far less........why ??? are you mad? For less..? You need a reality check, I'm afraid. [b'>You can call yourself lucky if you can find a villa in Dubai for AED 2,5 million. For the same amount (EUR 550,000)[/b'> I can buy a stand alone villa with a nice garden in one of the most expensive cities in my country. And I'm from West Europe. And that villa in my country could be almost 100 years old, good enough to stand another 100 years. Every single dirham we earn here, and after paying stupid rents, schooling fees etc, is going straight back to our home country, where we are citizens and have rights. To keep it here.. Now that would be mad. edited by Notnewintown on 14/12/2014 For that price I could buy an fantastic house where I come from. There's no way I would spend that kind of money on the villa I'm renting at the moment and they are actually going for more than that !!
