I could never call Dubai home as although I am here for hopefully the next 5 years, we have already found out once how easy it is to end up jobless. I would have hated to have been in this position having bought a house here.

it's actually both... it's FREE to enter with parking underground... and you can troll along the mall (themed like an old arabian souq/marketplace) for free... but if you decide to shop or eat at any one of their numerous restaurants you would need to pay... they also have a lovely little abra ride inside that you can take (again a paid activity) not sure if their christmas village is up yet but if it is - it's a lovely place to visit! Double check on the parking. I have a feeling I read somewhere that they either have started or are planning to start charging for the parking!

Totally agree, and so many of the shops are not offering refunds, just a credit note or money on a crd that has to be spend within the "group" - I hate that! I miss good old M&S gift receipts! One of the reasons I rarely shop here now I don't really want to stop shopping here, if I did - I'd have no clothes, as I am rarely in the UK long enough to shop, and I like to try on clothes! It is more of a case of making sure you take opinions with you, so no need to return items! LOL :) I'm very rarely in the UK full stop. I just do what SarahLou suggested a while ago. Try the clothes on out here and then order from the UK :biggrin:

In her early forties :( This is a big problem! I would contact her husband, meet him for a coffee and talk to him about it. Tell him she's scaring you and that your worried about her mental health. Also tell him your getting so worried you have thought about calling the police. Tell him it needs to stop right now or you will start taking action. I know her husband must know somethings not right with his wife. Take action now, dont let this woman intimidate and scare you for one more day. Totally agree. I think this coffee meeting should include the OP's DH as well, though. If the stalker finds out the OP is ignoring her, yet out meeting her DH for a chat, that could be misconstrued and catastrophic. I was just about to say the same. Whatever you do DO NOT meet her husband on your own. Take your DH with you.

Im not sure how old you are but as we get older (mid 30s,40s) we need to eat less carbs becauses our bodies produces more estrogen, which creates more fat cells, which make more estrogen that creates more fat cells. Your body stores the fat, usually around the tummy and thigh areas. Perimenopause, or menopause transition, begins several years before menopause. It's the time when the ovaries gradually begin to make less estrogen. It usually starts in a woman's 40s, but can start in her 30s or even earlier. And when you get to your 50s, your body wants carbs, but you know what happens if you give in :(

Gosh GE - if your rent is only 25% of your income, even with DEWA of say another 5% (2k per month), that still leaves you with 28k for food, entertainment, travel, clothes and saving. that should go very far with no small children (school fees would take at least another 10k per month for two or more in primary school/ nursery). are you sure you're keeping track of all your discretionary spend? I have a family of 6 (including 2 kids a baby and my maid), and we spend less than that every month. We do sometimes lose when we have to send money back to the UK, which is why I try and keep a bit of a stash here and transfer when the rates are good. Hey at least we're saving something and adding to our pensions, which is more than we were doing back there. I'll just have to ask for a pay rise in the New Year !!!

GE..not sure where your money is going but we have about 80% of the income that you state. Our apartment costs AED100k a year but school fees are AED144k a year. We don't get flights and my kids do a couple of paid activities every week. They are always needing money for school and uniform is costly and both outgrowing clothes at a tremendous rate. I'm also topping up a mortgage back home as rental income doesn't cover mortgage. It is tight but we get by. Wish I knew and yes we're topping up back home too as DH pension doesn't cover our costs. What would you class as a decent amount to save every month? Your rent is now 25% which is good (my rule is no more than 1/3 of the income) I would say you should aim to save min 25% -&gt; 10k Which leaves you with 50% each month -&gt; 20k Something else must be eating a big chunk of your income (hope not the dogs) :) OK so we're getting there at 2-5k per month. We have to keep a reasonable amount out here, as when we do go on holiday the dogs kennels have to be factored into anything we want to do and occasionally the cats if our neighbours are unable to look after them.

Someone from the UK perhaps? To be honest I just use a lovely lady optician at Al Jaber in Springs shopping centre. she has been great with my contact lenses, especially since I wear varifocal glasses and always have problems finding lenses to suit.

I'm never sure whether my cleaner would prefer a present or money. In the past I have always given her money. Both Eid holidays, when we go away and when we have guests she always gets something. I'm going to give her cash at Christmas too as I wouldn't know what to buy her and I always feel that as the rest of you say, they prefer to spend it on what they want/need.

I can suggest my dentist Dr Neil Mitchell of Nicholas & Asp at Al Manzil Mall. He's a lovely guy as well as good dentist and he recommened various treatments to me when others had just suggested extraction. Not sure if there's a pediatric dentist based there too, but you could always ask.

As of today I have lost a stone :-) ( Took me 3 weeks) I used my fitness pal, kept my calories to 1240 a day and exercised 4 times a week ( mix of cardio and weights) I ate no later than 8pm at night and it seems to be working well although with Xmas coming I may put it all back on Well done you :biggrin: Yes Christmas is going to be a bit of a struggle, but it's only a couple of days and at least you know what to do to get rid of it again. I am taking my trainers to Ireland and will go for brisk walks with the dog x Jealous :cry:

I agree with Chrissy and Beebers, in my case I do eat healthy, no processed food, no sweets, desserts or sugar, minimal salt, no wheat products, no bread or rice or pasta, and no junk food, my normal eating window is 6am to 7pm. Exercise-generally a brisk walk for about 40 mins. One guilty pleasure a square of 90% dark choc. Typical daily diet, breakfast-oats porridge made with water no sugar no salt a little cinnamon for flavour and to boost metabolism, lunch- steamed salmon lots of green veggies-dinner-pot of plain yogurt. two cups of tea daily and one cup of coffee. Thought maybe cutting off at 6pm instead of 7pm as I am not sure where I am going wrong food wise :( I think you are eating too little calories. Aim for around 1200-1300 anything less than that puts your body into starvation mode and metabolism will slow down and become sluggish. I found if I went below 1100 per day I didn't lose a pound but when I kept it at a steady 1250 I did. I don't eat my Dinner till 7pm and then have a snack ( organic peanut butter on a Ryvita) at 9pm and I still lost the weight :) I agree. I have tried the cut down to the minimum calories and all it did was make me miserable as I didn't loose a kg. I also refuse to cut things out completely, apart from processed foods which I have never eaten, as I think a little of everything is good for you

Now you've got me thinking about it. I have almost always done this. Breakfast around 8ish or later on a weekend and dinner is finished by 8pm most nights unless it's something special, which is very rare or at least on a weekend, which means it still probably works. The only thing I really do when I'm desperate to lose some extra weight, especially if it's for an occasion, is cut out the carbs for a few days and up the protein. The rest of the time I just eat normally.

Most people we know don't have villas, don't have maids, don't live the "Dubai lifestyle" - but they're only getting by month-to-month and can't save. We're talking families with a monthly income of around 40k, which isn't amazing, but isn't particularly low either (the average monthly salary in the UAE is about 18k). Now that most companies no longer pay rent or school fees, Dubai isn't a place for families to come if they are serious about saving. It's a place to come to enjoy a different sort of lifestyle for a while, but not a luxurious one, and then to leave again after a few years with no real savings, but some good memories. I wish someone would help me reassess our lifestyle then!!! Yes between us we bring in more than 40K a month, but we're still struggling to save much. We live in a 2 bed villa and unfortunetely can't downsize as we brought our fur family with us. If our LL decides to give us 12 months notice next year we're stuffed, unless a miracle happens regarding rents by then. We run two cheap cars, neither of which is a hugh 4X4. In the three years since we arrived, we've done one brunch a couple of dinners out when friends have been over and same goes for beach days. Yes I go to a salon approx every six weeks and hairdresser every 2/3 months for a cut. Apart from this we live pretty much the same as we did back in the UK, so if anyone can help and tell us where I'm going wrong, I'd be eternally grateful. Have you got kids? No just the two of us and five pets, which is why we need a villa We are on similar money and still manage to save almost half of that almost every month. We have no kids (no dogs either), travel 4x times a year, do brunches every 4 months or so (for other peoples bdays) but go out for dinners every week (pub style but still costs us 400each time). We live in an apartment and rent takes up half of the rest of the expenses. I do not do beauty salons..do my nails and waxing, and my friend trims my hair. We never buy designer clothes but i do buy an odd piece of clothing at a high street brands (which are more expensive than in the UK). No maid either. We do do a spreadsheet of expenses where we firstly decide how much money will go into savings. If we see the credit card going too high we then cut on going out. I cannot understand where your money goes... Do you pay too much for your rent? Do you have very expensive hobbies? Write down all your expenses and see where it brings you. Life is getting more expensive here but I do also think it is still relatively cheaper than in Europe (case without kids). We will have to pay more for rent next year since we've been given notice to move out and that will cost us another 30-40 k more a year probably but we will still be able to save more that what we used to in the UK Don't worry I'm the worlds expert on spreadsheets for household expenses!!! Yes we have to pay more than we would like to for rent, but unfortunately there is no other option. No hobbies, as I said we live pretty much the same as we did in the UK, where our main hobbies were walking and motor bikes, neither of which we do much of here. Cleaner comes twice a week. Hols are down to minimum two a year (and our flights have been free due to the airmiles we've accumulated) and no weekends away as we always have to factor in kennels for the dogs, luckily we have lovely neighbours who will look after the cats. To be honest it's probably the rent that is the main problem, as if we had an apartment we could manage with 1 bedroom. Just have to hope that our LL is in a good mood when our next contract comes around and one of us gets some sort of pay rise :(

The Sainsbury ad is a beautiful story, but it seems very cheap and exploitative to me for a supermarket chain to make mileage from the memory of our national heros, many of whom did not return from one of the most devastating war battles in UK history. Not appealing to me at all. This account of history should not have been pilfered for commercial purposes. They've only used it this year as it's the 100th Anniversary, which I think is good, as the younger generation need to know their history.

I am the same GE when I first came everything was so cheap and I could live it up. I too rarely go to brunches etc, I don't buy clothes in Dubai, friend does my hair and I tend to go to the free beaches at the weekend and take food. Rent, food and utilities are my biggest spend and all of those have gone up. I used to save a lot but now lucky if it is 10% per month The only good thing is that we've managed to hold onto our house back in the UK as DH pension covers the mortgage. Yes we do manage to save a little, but it then ends up being swallowed up by something!!!!

Bright Eyes did they have the design in the shop or did you take the Arabic script and ask them to make it for you. What about the chain?. I might nip up there, sounds a very reasonable place. Cara do it all for you. All you need to do is give them the name you want. It comes in a lovely box with the chain.

Marriage is a partnership no matter who is working, but spending money isn't the only thing that should be shared; sacrifices should also be shared, no? When I wasn't working after first arriving to UAE, DH would give me an allowance, but the amount was decided upon by having a discussion. I didn't see it as an insult because I left my career. Our decision to move was mutual, we have a goal, and budgeting will always be a part of that. When I would get frustrated, I would focus instead on what we were trying to accomplish rather than focus on what I was doing without. It takes emotional maturity and practice. Sounds like OP and her DH need to revisit their goals and approach. That said, I would hope the OP has access to her DH's account(s) for emergencies. I don't want to sound harsh to the OP, but it did come over as a bit of a winge. Sit down and talk to your DH. Perhaps he's worried about spending too much money at first and wants to keep some in reserve just in case. Also be prepared to cut back on things you spend on. I am not saying this just for effect, but for our first few months I never dreamed of spending on manicures and facials, or going out for coffees and lunches unless if was really necessary. Please just talk to him or this will hang over your time here from the start.

Still pennies to take as opposed to their cost in England. Does not mean it is not noticeable that the price will increase. If service quality did it would be good. If a booked taxi arrived it would be fantastic too. Anyone tried Uber? Never tried Uber as I heard bad reports about them.
