Just looked on GOV.UK and yes it is all saying check travel advice, but the area we plan on visiting is well away from the two or three areas people are being asked to avoid.

There is a small Mall attached to the Hotel with Spinneys and a few other shops in there including some salons. Sorrry I haven't taken much notice of them though.

A lot may depend on where you are living and how far you are willing to travel. I can highly recommed The Cure who have branches in Media City and The Green Community. I always use the one at The Green Community for waxing, threading, mani/pedi, massage and facials and have never had cause to complain. When I changed from a BB to an iphone 5 they just pushed out the smaller bit of my SIM card and put it in my new phone. If you have a look at your SIM it may be the same.

I converted 120,000 AED into GBP and it works out at approx 19k There is no way I would pay that for a similar house in the UK I think if you were to look for a like for like it would be quite difficult - houses round here generally only have the one bathroom or maybe the master bedroom would be ensuite as well, commonly only two rooms downstairs plus kitchen...overall space is much less here. If houses the same as our Dubai villa existed here they would probably rent for a similar amount..Although nobody in the UK would expect you to pay a year's rent in advance !! lol Very true, especially the years rent in advance;) But after we looked at a 2 bed in Springs, there is no way I would pay that much for such a small space.

It really depends where in Hampshire you want to live. Apart from petrol and train fares (which presumably you would not need) the biggest cost of living in UK is housing. Utilities are not cheap but also not hugely expensive (if you are paying for aircon/water in Dubai as an extra you will probably find heating in the UK cheaper). I have a friend whose wife has just had a baby. They have just bought a four bedroom house in Liphook, Hampshire. I am not 100% sure of his earnings but I would suspect around 40k. He goes on relatively cheap holidays (Thailand etc.), and is not a big spender (no designer clothes etc.). But lives fairly well, they eat home cooked meals, and an occasional pub lunch, they have two cars (one is a company car) and he has a camper van for his camping holidays to Wales. :-) A 40k salary would leave you with take home of around £2500 a month. This is a useful calculator: http://www.listentotaxman.com/ we pay for water (and sewerage) in the UK too..and gas. electricity, community charge, prescriptions, road tax, income tax, National Insurance and in some areas residents' parking... Sorry Ruth but Thailand is not a cheap holiday...not many of our friends venture further than Europe for their hols - that's if they an afford to go away at all...(now trying to think of someone I know who's been abroad this year and can only think of two !! lol). I did wonder how Thailand was a cheap holiday. We could never have afforded to go there when DH and I were still in the UK and we were both on fairly decent salaries with no kids. For us it was Easyjet to Europe, or a drive to the Lakes :) <em>edited by Geordie expat on 06/08/2014</em>

You only get free health care if you've been paying tax and National Insurance but at least the schools are free..Hampshire is lovely, we're next door to it, but property is expensive..rent or buy you won't get much change from 700 or 800 a month for a modest family home. Utility bills, tax, community charge and insurance on top. Plus if you run a car you pay road fax and fuel is 3 times the price of Dubai. I've also found grocery shopping quite expensive here this summer ...many items are cheaper in Dubai !! (And you have to pack your own bags !! Lol ). Compared to rents in Dubai for "modest family homes" I would hardly call 700 to 800 pounds sterling pcm expensive. What is the going rate for a Springs house these days? Well over 1k per month and I'm talking GBP <em>edited by Geordie expat on 06/08/2014</em>

I am dreading when I have to move. 10k more a year to move across the street to the older and smaller part of my area :-( I would imagine that you're probably already aware of this, but I have found out that if the LL doesn't sell by the time your notice is up, then it's cancelled and you can stay. Also you have first chance of dealing with the new LL if it sells. You never know this info may help

Hi I don't have HSBC outside of Dubai. Hence the fees to send money. My UK account is Citi and I will move to them here for the free transfers. I am interested though that Geordie expat you get free withdrawals at all Visa ATMs. I don't. I think it's a 10 dirham fee. Not a lot I know but to get at my own money it annoys me. Maybe I need to try to get hold of my elusive account manager again! We opened the account specifically for moving out here and were automatically given Premier status. I think it's only Premier account holders who get the free withdrawals.

We opened our HSBC account while we were still in the UK and were given a premier account from the start. When DH came out here he was allowed a savings account with them, until his residency visa came through. Yes we have free international transfers from account to account, one of the reasons we wanted this type of account. No problems so far, but we don't have to contact our relationship manager that often. Just had my stitches out this morning, still got my arm strapped up though. I start physio again with Kelly next week, so hopefully should see a great improvement from then. She is an excellent physio and you can talk to her and she will explain everything.

The Sheikh Hamdan complex is great if you purely want to swim as it has a fab Olympic size pool. I know every time we've been there they didn't allow children and you need a note from your doctor before you can use it.

Firstly don't worry about Miller Hay all their staff are lovely. A straightforward visa can take 4-6 weeks depending on how it is processed, they can be done express if the company or your husband pays the excess. Don't worry about the 30 days as you can do visa runs. Lastly there is an English RTA page I think the link is somewhere on the left hand side. <em>edited by Geordie expat on 28/07/2014</em>

Never ever been told that about the visa being not valid if in an expired passport and DH e-gate card never works! We were told never to use stapled though. DH has never had a problem with having two passports rubber banded together.

You needn't have any worries regarding Miller Hay, they are a very good, pro active, reputable agency. I did loads of temp work through them and they also found me my permanent role
