Hi we are also moving to dubai in sept. Personally I'm terrified I'm in my fifties no kids, they are all to be left in the uk! What do women do to fill their days I'm so worried I will be bored. We are thinking of living in the downtown area as husband will commute to sharjah, have been told that it's nicer for ladies in dubai ? Help please Can I be totally honest and say that we are both in our fifties with kids back home in the UK.. Yes we have made some friends out here, but they are all a lot younger than us and mainly neighbours. We haven't really changed our way of living since we moved as we are quite happy to carry on as we were in the UK. Yes we do go out more often but it's mainly just the two of us. We also both work full time. When I wasn't working I did find it hard to fill my days as there is only so much coffee you can drink and I'm not one for walking round the malls. I never did venture to an EW coffee morning, but I'm sure you will find some lovely ladies at one. You're right Georgie Expat it is a dry heat so much more comfortable but I lived in Kyrenia a few years ago and in July and August temperatures were very often at around 46 degrees. Maybe this is not the norm but thought it worth pointing out. We must have been lucky then :) Anyway I much prefer the summer heat over there than here :)

It may not be a scam - could be muppet agent lost the contract. Could well be, but I'd still be checking with Ejari. Do they not hold a copy of the original contract, they seem to keep copies of everything else?

One hummus recipe Quick and easy hummus Ingredients: • 400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 125g tahini • 2 or 3 garlic cloves, crushed • 4 tablespoons lemon juice • 5 tablespoons water • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • Half teaspoon salt To finish: • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 1 teaspoon paprika Preparation: Combine the chickpeas, lemon juice, garlic, cumin, salt, tahini and water in a food processor, and blend to a creamy purée. (It may be a bit thick and difficult to blend, but don’t be tempted to add more water – I give my blender a good shake while it’s running to help it along!) Turn out onto a dinner plate or a good-sized bowl, and smooth with the back of a spoon. Sprinkle with the paprika and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil. Serve with warm pitta bread, or whatever you fancy, really. You can increase the lemon juice if you like, so long as you decrease the water by the same amount – any more than 10 tablespoons of liquid will make it too runny, and you can’t rescue it. I find it tastes better if you let the flavours develop overnight in the fridge – the garlic can be a bit overpowering if you eat it straight away. It’ll keep for several days in the fridge.

Hi TanAmbassador We used a guy called Matt Boyle at Currency Index. http://www.currencyindex.co.uk/ If you contact them they'll give you all the info you need and always let you know the rate before you do anything. We checked with a few other places including our bank, as the transfer with them was free, but we still got a better deal through Matt.

Obviously the more you transfer the better the deal and they will do it all via email and your bank. We had no need to draw cash out and take it anywhere. I can wait until next week :) Thank you. I can see the ongoing rate selling of Euro is AED 5.03 looking good I think? I'll post the details tomorrow for you :)

Sorry for what has happened to you, but I think you really know the answer to this yourself. He's done it before and he'll do it again. Believe me my ex was not as bad as this, but he was violent after a drink. If as you say you don't need him financially and the apartment is in your name, he has to go. Again apologies for being short and sweet, but there is no way to sugar coat this.

Northern Cyprus is beautiful but it gets hot in summer, so if you want to escape the heat then maybe this is one for another time. I've only ever known it get anywhere near 40 in the middle of Nicosia. It's absolutely gorgeous by the coast and it's a dry heat :)

Sounds like it. We opted for the gravel etc to keep the Dewa bills down. Was walking my dog last night and they've finally mowed the big lawn between D8 & 9, it was getting like a jungle and I suppose the pesky little creatures will always find somewhere to live! We're in 5 so very rarely get down that end and we seem to be far enough away from any of the 'rubbish' landscaping to be affected by it :)

Just picked up on a post on fb, and these are being called "garden roaches". Perhaps we are in the same situtation as you mainly patio, gravel and only one or two pot plants, which we look after.

I can give you very basic instructions that once you come off SZR and turn along towards Emirates Towers, you will have DIFC on your right, Emirates Towers on your left. Take the filter lane to your right (as if you were going up towards Dubai Mall) at the lights and once round the corner you'll see the entrance to the car park for both Zuma and Gaucho. Hope this helps.

Hi Both, Yep I am happy to leave them nail polish free for a few weeks after I get back no problem. I normally have to do that anyways, as they tend to go a bit yellow if polish left on for too long! Lazy Bones :) But so long as they go back to normal eventually! (sooner rather than later) You don't need to leave them polish free, just have an ordinary polish put on.

I always go for Gelish or Shellac before my hols. No chipping and it lasts. Personally I prefer Shellac, not sure if there is actually any difference and I always have it removed properly. Never try and peel it off myself. As long as you give your nails a rest after two to three weeks no issues at all. It has the opposite effect on mine. We live in District 5 and I can honestly say I have found maximum 3 in over two years in the house and garden. Have you tried Mazz Ali at Golden Wave he was brilliant with us when we were looking. <em>edited by Geordie expat on 07/07/2014</em>

I was just about to add that as majority are classed as 'local hires' you probably won't get any benefits, will have to be on a father's or spouse's visa and the salary isn't that good.

Hi Geordie Expat, How did you like Dr Andreas? Hope you're feeling better :) Morning. I ended up seeing Dr Njoomi at the Meadows Mediclinic as he was around when I went for my results yesterdy. He is such a lovely man, told me exactly what my problems were even before I could speak or he had seen the MRI! End result is I'm off to hospital on 19th for keyhole surgery to repair the tear (if it's not too bad) and have a spurr removed from the bone. Delightful !!!

When we came out it was the end of April. We were told that to avoid paying tax on our UAE income we had to be out here for one full tax year, so almost two years in total, give or take a few weeks. We have only been back to the UK for two weeks since we left though, so will never have to worry about the 90 day rule until we go back full time - if we ever do. We are also still paying tax in the UK on pensions though, but that makes no difference.

I would suggest trying to transfer lump sums as oppose to monthly amounts, if the conversion rate is as bad as it is for AED. That said HSBC do tell you what you'll get for your transfer before you actually hit send. <em>edited by Geordie expat on 03/07/2014</em>

I honestly don't know the answer to that. I was lucky in that I brought my suits with me from the UK, but bearing in mind that it took me two years to find a permanent role, they got plenty of use ;)

That's the problem with some of these companies. I'm lucky in that I have the same cleaner every time and totally trust her. I need to I left a diamond ring on the dressing table one morning by mistake but she had very kindly put it back where it belonged. If you are really concerned it was the maid and you don't know her that well, then yes I would go to the company.

Do you feel able to confront the maid directly? If it was me I would do that to start with and see what her reaction is face to face. If you're not sure you could always ask her to keep a look out in the house for them and see what she does or says. You can almost guarantee that if you go to the company she will probably be fired immediately or at the very least have her pay stopped. <em>edited by Geordie expat on 03/07/2014</em>

I honestly can't remember exactly, but I definitely didn't have my visa cancelled. DHs PRO sorted his out and then I was told mine was ok. Obviously they had to see it and take copies as usual, but that was it. What they did behind the scenes I have no idea ;)
