The women in "Thong" bikinis on JBR recently.... don't even go there. Im a Westerner but its just becoming very wrong..... She was topless this weekend, granted sunbathing face down - I was in total shock as I'm sure that's an absolute no no, especially as she was right next to the children's waterpark Ahhhh, the topless thong ladies invaded our complex too :-(((( And here I was thinking sheer is an issue...this is not Torremolinos for crying out loud... Yes, I agree that this is wrong in so many ways, but do you not think it's the way Dubai is sometimes advertised as a holiday destination?

All I can suggest is you go on the JVT fb page and do a search. Sorry I can't help from here as I don't have access to it. Have you turned off all the unnecessary ac, such as the ensuite fans and the 'ghost' ac? Also search for Ranjit, of Green Tech. He's supposed to be brilliant at fixing anything that goes wrong in one of these villas. <em>edited by Geordie expat on 05/05/2014</em>

why such a big 4x4 when not needing it for offroad? I know petrol does not cost anything here, but should we not think about the environement!? I agree. Why do people always feel the need for such large cars. I love my Scooby XV.

Are you on your DH or fathers sponsorship? If so, contact all the agencies available and you may be able to find some temporary work, which will always give you UAE experience of some sort. Also use LinkedIn to death :) <em>edited by Geordie expat on 04/05/2014</em>

It took me almost two years to find a permanent role. What type of job are you looking for, whose sponsor ship are you on and have you tried all the recruitment agencies and online ways of searching. Have you also used your LinkedIn profile to your advantage?

We have, but we've also known people to loose too. Mind I do know that they had to do all the checking themselves and watch the villa. Why cant it be straight across the board?. The same for everyone. it would make life so much easier. There is so much talk about the laws now and it is in every paper so LL have no excuse. I bet the RC are inundated at present That's what put us off taking the LL any further. There are so many different answers being given to the same complaints that you can't be guaranteed anything. That's why I called about 6 or 7 times with the same query. Wanted to make sure everyone was singing the same song as it were. It's frustrating and I know so many people filing cases right now and so many people who have been given 12 months notice to vacate at their renewal. I really really hate to say it, [b'>but here's to hoping the bubble bursts again and people learn another lesson[/b'>. If I had access to the thumbs on this computer I'd definitely "like" this. [b'>I have liked it for you GE[/b'>, however the RC people may sing from the same song sheet as per the laws we have read online etc however people were [b'>overruled by the judges at hearings[/b'>. I recently read about it happening to a poster on here. Thanks sarahlou. Yes that is my worry, you get told that you are in the right and it will be ok, but then on the day the judge rules against you. You're left to pick up the costs, find somewhere to live and probably end up with no deposit, to boot.

Not sure on that one Sarah. But have known a couple of people get compensation through it. Thanks My LL has taken her property off the market and when It was up for sale I did say I would move after the 12 month period. I am not sure where I stand now. I have a 12 month contract taking me to mid 2015 so I will hang fire and see what happens Did you actually get the official 12 months notice or was it just formally agreed. If the latter, you may get away with it :)

Our LL told us that because of Expo he could get much higher rents for his properties. He was quite taken aback when DH turned round and said yes, but that's still six years away, what are you going to get in the meantime. I will add that we are paying the 10% as stipulated by RERA and getting the same contract as last year. He did "suggest" we could pay the same and have 12 months notice, but we want to leave when it suits us. And which of the four reasons was he going to stipulate in that 12 months notice? You know unless hey stick by it, they're banned from renting for a year. The easiest one - he was going to sell. Yes we have looked into all that, but feel we want to go when the time is right for us and as DH told him, you never know what will happen in 12 months time?

I am not trying to be dense but I cannot see that in my local UK address supplied by SnS to my email. Is this on their website? In any case I will try that one with many thanks. What about US or other websites asking for local numbers? It's on the SnS website and the other numbers are also there under each address. I see that now, but it still wont accept that number as local UK one. Am I missing some code or numbers? No, it should be the usual number as Izzy posted. 5 digit code and 6 digit number. Just make sure there is nothing else in the box like - or a gap.

What about face products? My Dh uses mine, and I recently switched to another face wash and he came out of the bathroom commenting on how great the product is and his pores are so open he does not want to clog them with face cream..lol lol lol! This is one thing I don't mind my DH doing. I'd rather he 'borrowed' my products than didn't bother. I agree, so my thinking was if he cared for male grooming I'd buy him his own range...he doesn't use. Prefers mine and now my products aren't lasting as long lol I just bought him the male version of mine. He still uses some of my stuff though :)

It must be a thing with men and TV. Mine always starts watching something when we're just about to go to bed. I'd go on my own. More room then ha I do, but then I'm always disturbed when he comes up and he often leaves the ac on which is another thing that irritates me :)

Recycling DOES happen here. There are various different plants in different emirates. i.e the aluminium is in one Emirate, something else in another. Can't remember which one is which but it does happen - I've known a couple of people who worked in the industry. Have faith! :) So, hopefully my weekly trips are not in vain :)

Back in the UK I was totally honest about 1 when I really wanted a job I had applied for. I then added 10% to my answer 2. They came back and offered me 7% and as it was for me a dream job I said yes. Within six months I had 1 + 20%. and it continued up from there :) It was their way of recruiting people who really wanted to work for the company. Wish that happened out here <em>edited by Geordie expat on 01/05/2014</em>

Last week I pick up over $800 worth of stuff I ordered from the US, from the post office. It clearly had the value printed on the paperwork attached to the package yet I didn't get dinged for customs. I decided not to question it... because you pay customs on 1000 usd and over! Sorry to be asking this again, but what is the maximum value you can spend without being legally caught out at customs? Just to make sure it doesn't happend again. i said 1000usd customs will charge 5% of total value. That was why I apologised and asked again as my total order was only GBP 227 yes so your price was like a hundred dollars. So was I just unlucky then?

If we all took this to heart, no one would go anywhere. Please OP just go to the cities you mentioned and enjoy them to the full. Wear your jewellery as you normal, but as we've said, don't flaunt it and be aware of what's around you. Thanks, but the purpose of my post is purely informational. Yes, and I was just suggesting that the OP who is travelling should still go as normal but just to be more aware. I am the OP :) Sorry it was aimed at the lady asking about going to Europe and taking her diamond ring.

I'm still very safety conscious here. Keep my bag shut at all times, don't walk around with my phone in my hand and always on the lookout at ATMs. I think the main issue is that people living here are very lucky in that there is very little crime and they become complacent. Trouble then happens when they carry on in the same way in another country and the opportunists as well as others take note.

Thanks for this. The situation is that the employee is under probation so does the company pay for these charges to get him out the country and can the enforce it? I know there is a 30 day time limit for someone to get a new visa but does the company keep the passport during this time or do they have the right to remove the employee as they see fit? TIA It depends on the company, some are not very nice & they insist on sending the employee back home & issue a ban. They have the right to keep the passport until he finds a new job/ sponsor It is different from one company to another but unfortunately in those situation the employer has the upper hand I was just going to say the same. DH old company HR were great and said we had three months till they needed to cancel the visa and then would give us an indefinate time to fly out. Thay also didn't take our passports from us, so I guess if we'd wanted to we could have done a runner at any time.

I'm headed to Europe for my first time in a few weeks.. Do you think it's safe to take my engagement ring with a decent sized diamond or should I leave it back in Dubai? Whereabouts in Europe? You just need to be aware and not flaunt any expensive items ( Handbags, flashy jewelery) etc I agree with not flaunting it, but sorry, there are loads of people all around Europe with decent sized diamond rings. This is all being blown out of proportion. Just be aware of what's going on around you.

Happened to DH over a year ago. The company were very good about things as the person who wanted rid of him had his own personal reasons. It was in his original contract that if this happened we would both be flown home. Luckily it never came to that, but if it had we were told that they only needed our passports to do the visa cancellation and then we would be given the passports back until we left the country.
