Woo hoo I will largely be running, watching IPL and [b'>teaching kitty cats to use a catflap [/b'> oooh and making yogurt :) Anyone doing anything more fun? A few treats and they'll soon learn :) Sindi will be in and out like a shot, Ali Baba is a bit slower..... Jam doesn't get a magnet :D I rememeber when we first got our JR and with it being a cat flap that worked on their microchips we decided to let him use it :) Worked great until he got a little too large and got stuck one night ;)

I completely agree with you DesertRose. We have two dogs, one JR we've had from being a pup and the other a rescue ??? from N Cyprus. Both are noisy when anyone passes the house or comes to the door, which is no bad thing, but if ever either of them even thought about nipping, or biting, I think I would have to say that once was once too many. I also couldn't live with having to think "what if" everytime we had someone in the house, or met someone outside.

We have a villa for the exact same reason, our dogs tend to bark at the slightest thing, not for an extended period just 30s - 1m but long enough that with the wrong neighbours in Dubai we could have problems we would simply rather not have. We're lucky enough to be in the ranches but it is getting pricey now. I had a friend with a lab in JVT, the villas seem very nice, gardens are spacious, [b'>they said the only downside is lack of facilities and the road layout changes every day! [/b'> I also don't know what the prices in Victory Heights and Silicon Oasis are like now but they were cheaper than the ranches for a while (may have caught up). You should also look at DEWA (electricity/water) costs with villas which can be quite high especially if you have a lawn which I recommend avoiding if you can! You could consider an apartment or villa apartment, it is possible in an apartment block your dog may bark less as the noise he hears will be more frequent so may desensitise him. Part of the problem for us is we lived in the countryside in the UK (us and a farm) so any outside noise was infrequent and now in the ranches it is also very quiet but I think maybe if there was noise all day the dogs would get bored of it. As rents are going up and our dogs are now very old we are considering an apartment or a townhouse. I don't drive either and use Careem too, it's a great service. I also use another car service called Uber. Careem is good for booking in advance, I find Uber is often better for getting cars immediately (they don't take advance bookings). Someone has already given you a link to Careem but here is a link to Uber: https://uber.com/invite/cxpg3 You may also be aware the price for importing/exporting a dog has gone up recently. Please ensure you have funds available and keep your dogs vaccinations up to date so he can return home with you when/if you leave. So many people here arrive with dogs and their circumstances change suddenly. They are then forced to leave them behind due to finances or logistical reasons with quarantine. The dogs often end up on the streets, where they suffer terribly or eventually if they are lucky with a local charity who may be able to rehome them or if they are unlucky with the municipality where they are destroyed. Good luck and hope you can find a suitable home for you all. edited by RuthM on 24/04/2014 JVT is now much improved. Road layouts are fine, we have one shop and a couple more just about to open :) We have left half of our garden as pure sand just for the dogs to run around on. Saves on the DEWA and saved having the grass ruined by them weeing on it. A two bed villa is now going for between 130 and 160k

Any sort of crisps only like salt n vinegar or prawn cocktail and ahve to be walkers, hula hoops or scampi flavour fries. Can you still get Prawn Cocktail crisps? They're a blast from the past :) Oh yes, quite often in Park n Rob and W/Rose. PnR sometimes have Smoky B*con in the oink section too :-) May have to go via Park n Rob tonight and see if they have the Smoky variety

[b'>How does this work though when any changes in contract have to be made 90 days before renewal, if the calculator only updates monthly?[/b'> I asked someone at the Land Department this question and was told what you can do is agree the terms and then agree to go by the rent calculator in terms of rent increases, if there are any, in the month that your contract renews. Complicated much? Which is what I've been saying for ages. We renew in a month's time and the LL has sent us a contract saying that the rent will increase by whatever the calculator says at the time of renewal. How on earth are we supposed to decide if we want to / can afford to stay - or not?????

Thank you Madge Gustard and Geordie expat for the prompt replies. Looking online it appears there are 2 beds in the Springs for around 135k - are things really looking so bad for renters in the near future? Thank you, Geordie, for the recommendation of Jumeirah Village Triangle, we'll try to have a look at that - is it a gated/secure area and, if not, do you feel safe there? Would be lovely to live somewhere with plenty of other dog owners and a garden large enough to play in. Will also look into Careem cars and Golden Wave Properties :0) JVT isn't gated - yet..... but they are saying we will be by the end of this year!!!!! We feel safe there, just as we would anywhere with two dogs in the house. All I will say, and I'm not putting the Springs down in any way, but when we looked at the 2 beds there, we both felt that there wan't enough indoor room for us and the pets and we felt we'd always be falling over one of them. The ground floor layout of JVT was much better for us.

If we have to be informed before the 90 day point of any rent increase, this just makes a mockery of the whole thing. Our LL sent us a letter saying that the rent would increae in line with the calculator. I think he was hoping it would increase by more than 10% in those 90 days. We still can't get a figure from the calculator and it's due for renewal next month !!! To be honest, all a LL can do right now is to inform a tenant before the 90 days point that he will increase as per rent calculator on the renewal date. That is transparent and fair. The LL has the same problem as we tenants do: the calculator only works 30 days in advance. So for him to abide by the rules there's nothing else he can do than inform you that rent will increase, the increase to be decided upon when the information is available on the rent calculator. Your assumption that LL is hoping for an increase by more than 10% is just that, an assumption. Not all LL are evil. No I agree not all are evil. What I said earlier along these lines was that this whole 90 days thing just doesn't work if the RERA calculator will only work for the current month. It's not even a rolling month, so not 30 days in advance. I tried our renewal date which is less than 30 days away and it would only allow me to check up to 30th April. This then gives not just us but a lot of people the added problem of do they stay and hope the increase won't rocket in the time allowed, or do they say no at the 90 day period and look for somewhere else. edited by Geordie expat on 22/04/2014

We still can't get a figure from the calculator and it's due for renewal next month !!! We had this with our commercial rent, we were told that if was no increase mentioned at the 90 day point, the LL cannot increase it. We gave him the cheques based on the amount due on the contact (he had put it up 5%), he made a small fuss then accepted it. We were also told the same applies to residential rents. edited by Ladybirdsarethebest on 22/04/2014 That's we've gone back to him with and refused the new contract, which has the clause 'non-renewable' along with other new clauses.

You could try Jumeirah Village Triangle. There are no facilities within walking distance apart from one shop, but more are promised. The taxis are getting to know the area better, but if we need to be somewhere on time we always use Careem, a private car company. The villas are 2 beds with huge gardens, great for dogs and you'll find a lot of us have at least one. Try Mazz Ali at Golden Wave Properties as he deals with the area.

I agree with this, but out of curiosity, how much of a working Mum's salary goes on a maid, childcare, etc and any other extras needed for her to stay at home? It would vary person to person, but for us about 30% of my monthly salary goes towards things needed so I can be a working mom and costs that wouldn't exist if I was a SAHM i.e. full-time hours for DD's nursery, part-time maid from agency, and Salik of DD's nursery commute everyday! so financially it still works out to be worth it for me to work (alhamdulilah!) Thanks, as I say, just curious, as majority of the working Mums on here say how expensive it is just to go back to work.

Wow ladies, let's stop attacking each other and not picking on sentences from each other's posts - If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all! I dont think TDB meant insult SAHM's at all and I didnt see it that way, but it is a sensitive topic for some women who feel SAHMs are looked down on. I was a SAHM for DD's first year, and been a working mum for all of DD's second year, and I'm leaving my job now as soon as she turns 2, and I can see both sides of the coin. As a mum: SAHM pros: lots of time with LO, bonding, not missing anything SAHM cons: lots of time with LO (haha just kidding) but it can get tiring when you want a break! Working mom pros: You can take a break (usually) more often in the day so when you do see LO you are more relaxed and enjoy them, cherish everything Working mom cons: Missing moments with LO as TDB pointed out It is a luxury to be a SAHM in the sense that as a mother the most valuable thing you have is time with your LO and when you're a working mom you miss it aLOT. [b'>Not everyone can afford it financially to be a SAHM.[/b'> However, I am leaving my job because now that DD is older and talking so much and learning I feel like I want to spend time with her because she'll be grown up before I know it! I am also glad I got to work the past year, and get some time for myself. My point is, both are difficult and both are stressful and both are also rewarding. As for the hubby thing, DH and I are pretty equal - we both dont cook so take out menus are our friend :) I agree with this, but out of curiosity, how much of a working Mum's salary goes on a maid, childcare, etc and any other extras needed for her to stay at home? edited by Geordie expat on 21/04/2014
