Just wondered as we have a house in Northumberland, but it's a bit out of the way, although great for kids. Old fashioned, in that they can play out safely, leave their toys etc out without worry and everyone looks after each other :) Sounds interesting. You'll need to check the rent calculator to see if your LL is entitled to raise your rent and if so by how much. There is also somewhere, but I can't remember exactly where, that gives all the figures and explains percentages etc. The calculator is by far the easiest :)

Yes all on the same amount, so now they'll have to watch their consumption along with the tyre wear. Totally agree with you about Lewis :) We used to watch the race on AD sport when the BBC weren't showing it live and use the Radio commentary from the laptop. No we weren't in Dubai at that time, shame nowhere else shows them live, unless the Bikers Cafe do as long as there isn't a clash. I must look into that.

Oooops hope he recovered ok. The main change is to the engines, down to 1.6 litre V6 turbo engines, so less power from the engines, but more from the new ERS system (the old KERS). Limited fuel in the cars, which should totally c**k things up and definitely no refuelling :( The rest is just the usual aero dymanics stuff about wings, nose height etc.

Geordie, have you been able to check with your friends how they processed it? I'll try and catch them this week and ask exactly what happened. But..... as far as I can remember they were having trouble with their LL who just wouldn't accept the fact that he was out of line, wasn't entitled to a rent rise and had left it too late to serve them notice. They took all their paperwork, old contract, copy of LL passport and four new cheques and were issued with a new contract. It just meant that they were covered and had paid their rent for the coming 12 months.

We've just bought a lovely new 2 seater from Home Centre called 'the cuddler' and yes it does do what it says on the tin :) They also had 3 seater versions of the same one. <em>edited by Geordie expat on 16/01/2014</em>

You'll def have space in Jumeirah Park, but very little else. You would probably spend your time running the kids about, but saying that it's always worth a drive around, especially now the roads are getting better :)

At the moment Jumeirah Park is just villas. I haven't seen any facilities at all around. There will soon be a small Geant opening though that is about all.

I believe four used to be the norm, as I have heard from people who paid via the RC and they always asked for four cheques. We are lucky in that our LL will accept six.

No community pools in JVT and there never will be. I also think it's the same for JVC, although that is less developed than JVT, so there may be time for one or two yet. Mind if you heard the news this morning, JVC rents have risen the highest in the last 12 months, up to 50%.

Yes it is rather in the middle of nowhere, but seems to have everything we want. My main worry is the fact that the rent cap has been removed in AD and we could actually end up worse off there. Yes they do, but at least you get a warning when they do. We've had ours nearly two years now in conjunction with our H*** cc and we've managed to get enough points to fly to Cyprus and Khatmandu. Mind I very rarely shop at Spinney's, but make use the all the other shops you can use it at, especially when we needed new glasses and contact lens, or anything electrical.

somebody said here they have a friend who pays 70 K for a tiny studio in JLT. this is what drives the numbers. I'm sorry to say but more people than not are either afraid to push back on LLs, or they are clueless about their rights. nobody will help us if we don't help ourselves. I went to court end of last year, and yes, there was a good number of people there submitting complaints. but considering the population of Dubai and how many of us must be getting increase requests outside the norms, the place should have been super full. and it wasn't. This unfortunately is what causes a lot of the problems here and will continue to do so, unless the tenants really do start to stand up for their rights. The law is mainly on their side. It's the ones who just roll over and say they can't be bothered with the hassle, they won't win, and then pay the increases asked. Maybe I'm being a pessimist but does anyone else find it a little suspicious that a man who seems quite actively against having a baby at the moment was OK with giving up birth control immediately after marriage? Does he know something that you don't? His words and his actions are not matching up - he's saying he doesn't want a baby but technically you could get pregnant any day, what would he do then? Hopefully it's because he's not as against it as he's making out, but there could be another reason Yes I agree - it is highly suspicious. Just logically is it possible to sack and ban a qualified teacher that easily, also in a very short time frame, over xmas and New year? I have been thinking that ever since that information was posted - something about the sequence of the posts in relation to inquiries from other posters has struck me as contrived. I know I could be wrong but it is just my gut feeling about the whole thing and no doubt I will be flamed for voicing it. I'll join you in being flamed as I am also thinking this may just be a cruel hoax, from someone who was bored. These posts bring out the best and worst in people, but it may also have brought back hurtful memories for others.

You are right GE, you should be able to pay monthly by automatic bank transfer. That would require more background checks on tenants and an easy way to resolve disputes, like a small claims tribunal. Companies could even offer to go guarantor for employees who were paying monthly; if they are not willing to take a risk for their employees it's understandable that a landlord would not want to risk it either. Property is a long term investment but you see on here people being delighted about reports of the Palm sinking and saying the build quality is so bad and houses won't last more than 10 years but still they want to live here for a while so someone is taking a risk to put their money down. The other thing is mortgage interest rates here are artificially high compared other parts of the world. If an investor is borrowing, the rate of return has to be higher than the local interest rates. Sure thing ARancher, however, ultimately it boils down to 2 things: people need a roof over their head, and a roof that is affordable. Salaries are not going up so how do you suggest tenants pay for the risks investors are taking? At some stage, people will walk away from this madness. How easy will it be to find tenants? Yes but I still thank that there will be others who feel that being in Dubai is 'living the dream', tax free ;) and all that and will be here to replace those of us who have struggled.

If the data is coming from Dewa, which I'd heard too, it will be registering properties that are being newly occupied at the higher rents so that will be driving things up. My dh knows someone senior in one of the government developers here and was told that they were frustrated at not being able to increase rents and the difficulties of terminating a contract. So there were some powerful forces behind the recent changes to the calculator. Government developers are back to releasing off plan properties, which they want sold so need investors and as I wrote before (which was greeted with some mockery on here) people won't invest and risk their money in Dubai if they feel the returns are not justified. The returns expected here are high but then again so are the risks of investing (the property might be delayed and you get some very bad tenants). I've also said that it's not fair for people to pay a year's rent up front but the risks of someone defaulting on payments are higher and it's very hard to evict a tenant. If it was easier to deal with a tenant who was in arrears and to recover arrears other than by launching an expensive claim through the courts, monthly payments would be acceptable. The 2 have to go hand in hand. I genuinely feel for people who are facing increases in rent without increases in salary. edited by A Rancher on 09/01/2014 I agree with most of what you've said, but surely if people were allowed to pay their rent monthly, by direct debit they wouldn't have to struggle to find the money up front. Therefore hopefully less of them getting into arrears. That's where some other countries have it nailed and can evict people who don't pay without so much hassle. I was told that it takes it's prices from Ejari and DEWA, but have my doubts. If it is then there are some people paying ridiculous prices. We live in JVT and it took a number of calls and visits, before the RC was altered to distinguish between town houses and villas and the number of bedrooms. <em>edited by Geordie expat on 09/01/2014</em>

Actually this whole story strikes me as strange as well. The OP's husband has managed to seduce, date and impregnate his child's teacher during the fall term? And then break up with her ...With all the holidays, they'd have had much less that four months. Either the OP's husband is something like George Clooney or I don't believe it. No I agree with you and have said all along I don't think the teacher is pregnant. I think she is just trying to get her revenge as he left her to go back to his family and she probably knows that saying something like this, true or not, will definitely split him from his wife. Which is exactly what she wants, with no thought for anyone else involved.

Don't forget that the new changes came into effect at the beginning of this year, which is probably why the calculator now says that there are more ernt increases due. Yes the 90 day rule still very much applies. One of my neighbours has just won her case, as the LL tried to increase her rent with less notice.

Just reading back through Celesti's posts. So the teacher was fired with a labour ban - meaning she's now stuck with no income. *click* could it be that the whole baby scenario is made up for her to get revenge? Given what she did before to force the affair out into the open? After all the issues, let's face it, who would have her, so who else is she going to sink her claws into but OP's husband and force him to support her and keep her life here. Just a thought. I'd question whether there actually IS a baby? All seems a little coincidental and convenient. But truth or not, HIS reaction is appalling. The "nice" man she was having an affair with has told her he wants to make a go of his marriage and leave her. What better to do than tell the OP that she is pregnant and therefore, hopefully, split OP and her DH completely. Sorry but this all reminds me of what happened to a friend back home many years ago. No baby for mistress, at least not in the right timeframe, two young children without a father and finally three very unhappy people as no one actually stayed together. I just can't get over a man walking away from his own young child. Surely it goes against all natural instincts to leave a young one. It's slightly easier to understand when a child is a teen. My brother and his wife split up and then my brother completely changed his life (business, property etc) to relocate to be nearer his daughter. These men forget that these children will grow up one day and may have to be faced. I read that one of the boys from One Direction is from a broken home where the dad walked out and he's tried to come back into his son's life now that he's famous...... I think a lot of men, if they are going to walk away, find it easier to leave young children and then as you say, famous kids or not, want to reappear when they get older.

I am finding it very hard to believe the venom from some posters here. This is a terrible situation, but are you all seriously advocating a course of action which will ultimately damage an [b'>unborn innocent child[/b'>? The OP has behaved beautifully all the way through a ghastly crisis, I'm sure she will want, for her own child's sake to maintain the high moral ground. Just because two other people have put their selfish desires first it doesn't mean she has to indulge in revenge. To Celesti, my deepest sympathy and admiration for the calm and adult manner in which you have attempted to save your marriage, all the very best for the future to you and your little one in a new and better life. Sorry, but I'll say it again. Is the OP quite sure this woman is pregnant, or is it just an easy way for him to get out of the marriage?
