I would like to take out a ten year mortgage or loan to assist in buying a property in the UK to probably let for short time then reside in, can anyone recommend someone who can assist. I want to also be able to pay in larger amounts to reduce the loan and not get penalised if I do so. Anyone done this and can suggest someone to get good advice, TIA My UK friends who reside here have used brokers in the UK to get mortgages They have gone down this route as it was the cheapest way I would second this, and try and find a broker who comes recommended. We used one and he got us exactly what we wanted. They are able to get hold of products not widely advertised and have so many different sources, definitely the cheapest way to go :)

I just don't get it. Why would you honestly want to live in a property that the LL wants back? I know what you are saying. It's easier to move out, not have all these hassles and stress. It's easier to not think of having someone have negative feelings about you staying in their property. [u'>But the thing is, I'm fighting for what is right.[/u'> If there is a law to defend me as a tenant, if this law can actually save me a substantial amount of money (I can save on the rent inflation, commission, shifting, painting the apt., etc...), if this law can say to LLs that you can't just push you tenants away because you want the rent to increase, then I will use that law to protect me. I'm very thankful to every one who backed me up and gave me information on this thread. Because I know I am not alone. I'm happy that I can talk to people here about my concerns as it eases the stress. I totally agree. If we all just gave in and rolled over when the LL's asked us to, the rents would never stop rising. The laws are there to protect the tenants, use them.

You will of course, get some people who say no and have to buy you the gift you've never ever wanted or needed, but there's always dubizzle ;) I do have visions of ending up with 10 toasters... I think that is almost every bride's nightmare scenario. You will know who you can really approach though and explain the situation and know that they will respect your wishes. Good luck for your future (and that of your many toasters ;) )

To be honest, in this day and age, I wouldn't shy away from asking for this or cash, as majority of couples already have a lot of their own stuff. I just think cash makes more sense with people coming from all over the place for the wedding. My SIL also suggested "donations" to a travel agents towards the honeymoon. We would love to go to the Maldives. Just not sure that's a good idea here unless you have a reliable travel agents? It does and you could always ask them if they would like specify what they would prefer you to spend it on. You will of course, get some people who say no and have to buy you the gift you've never ever wanted or needed, but there's always dubizzle ;)

Friends of ours who got married last month, asked it would give them gift vouchers for various stores they mentioned, as luckily majority of their guests lived out here. To be honest, in this day and age, I wouldn't shy away from asking for this or cash, as majority of couples already have a lot of their own stuff.

Dont chop you hair!!! I did that a year ago and i still regret it!!! Same for me. I got mine cut in January, and growing it back out is no fun. I'm getting married in October and wish I hadn't cut it now! I did that to mine years ago and regretted it before I had even walked out the salon. Nothing wrong with the cut or style I just wasn't happy with short hair and as the others have said growing it back seems to take ages and it's no fun. If you really want to get it cut short, do it in stages, then you can stop if you don;t like it at any stage.

The job advertised on he business council was for a german speaker but I send my resume anyway, u never know I guess. I also sent a few other letters out that I found on the links below… Feeling a bit more positive, just hope the employers will see past the exact compatibility and go for enthusiasm and willingness to work and learn. I have over 100 cover letters. One for every job I have applied for out here and none are identical. Geordie I'll hopefully be in touch in the New Year when it usually picks up :) :) :)

We have just been served notice as the LL says that he wants to move back in. I am sceptical. And very keen to hear the outcome of Rowellian's RC date. - we could be following your footsteps! Also, any advice on how to demand proof from LL that they are indeed moving in? Ask him for it. Say it is required from the rent committee where you have sought advice on this matter. Don't forget he also has to prove he has nowhere else to go i.e. no others properties

Correct. 12 months' notice to evict and he should have told you of the rent increase over 90 days from the date of your renewal and even then, he can only increase the rent as per Rent Index Guidelines. So he's missed the boat on the rent increase - hence your rent should stay the same at the renewal of contract. But he can still issue you with an eviction notice for 12 months' from when the notice is served. The notice needs to be served in writing, signed by a notary public and delivered by registered post (ie where you have to sign to demonstrate you've received it). Doesn't the eviction notice have to be for one of the 4 reasons though, he cannot just issue you with an eviction notice for the sake of it. All so confusing Yes he has to give one of the four reasons for eviction and prove it.

Sorry to piggy-back on this one.... We have just been served with 12 months notice as the landlord says he is intending on moving back in himself. I am sceptical. But is there a way I can demand 'proof' that he is indeed moving back in? I believe he has to prove that he has nowhere else to live.

12 months from contract renewal and he has to give you one of the four reasons for eviction. He's left it too late to change anything so your contract should just roll on the same as the last one.

no but if he does rent out as soon as they leave shouldn't the tennant be compensated? I was told by a friend ( He works for a big developer here) that if taken to the RC and the LL has rented it out within 2 years then the tenant is entitled to one years rent in compensation. Does it not clearly state that if the LL kicks a tenant out to sell then he cannot re-rent for a certain period of time? Thanks for saying this. I knew tenants were entitled to some form of compensation, but wasn't sure how much. And yes once they make someone vacate because they say they are selling, they shouldn't be able to rent it out for 2 years. I would love to hear from someone if they have managed to win this battle, as it seems the most common one for LL to use.

They said on the phone that I did not need a UK bank account. But their website seems to be set up only for accounts with sort codes. Can't open a UK bank account as I'm not there! What a pickle. Just found this on line - [b'>If permissible, you will have to apply in the first instance by post. Once your holding has been set up you can register for our online and phone service. Once registered you will be able to manage your holding, including selecting to receive prizes by BACS to a UK bank account (with notification by email), receive paperless documents and cash in and buy more Bonds. So. I called UK Premium Bonds and they said no problem being outside the UK, no need for the tax certificate when applying from UAE etc. Except when you are filling the form out online, it asks for a 'sort code'. We don't have sort codes here. Argh. Anyone managed to do this? I think you can only buy them with a UK bank account. Sorry

Let's face it, Dubai is a career-ender for many women. Great if you're into admin or HR, but for the rest of us, a huge black hole. I've even known lawyers to turn to school administration because there isn't anything else reasonable here. k" on my cv which never looks good. To be honest if I was an employer I wouldn't take on someone like a lawyer for an admin role. I'm not saying they couldn't do it, all I would be thinking was that they are just here until something better comes along. I don't have children out here, I'm on my husband's visa and medical insurance, so all in all it wouldn't cost much to employ me. I agree with you GE, I wouldn't either but some employers probably think they are bagging a bargain and don't think long term. Good luck in your job search. I had a career as a PA and Admin Officer back in the UK and I haven't managed to get anything similar out here. I'm now turning to work I did when I left school at 16, just to do something. GE, I think your experience shows to a certain extent that what DM said is true; you're an experienced Admin person but can't get a job in that field as those jobs are going to lawyers and so you're looking for something else. I had a good part time job with good pay here but they wanted me to go full time which wasn't possible when my children were so small. I could t find any part time work but got offers of other good full time jobs but the pay wasn't great and they didn't pay the allowances that they would have had to pay a man in the same position. My dh said not to bother working for so little and thereby saving employers a whole lot of money! I did that but now that my kids are older I find it impossible to even get an interview as it's so long since I worked. If I go back home, I'm going to have a huge "career break" on my cv which never looks good. To be honest if I was an employer I wouldn't take on someone like a lawyer for an admin role. So if the landlord rents out instead of moving in, what does the previous tenant seek in this case? are they compensated? Who determines the amount? I had heard that if it can be proved, it's a couple of months rent and their removal costs, but don't hold me to that. I have never actually spoken to anyone who has had to do this. They have some fab little ones at Galleries Lafayette. Very easy to fill, you just atomise straight into the canister. OH was so impressed when I brought one home, that he asked me to get him some for his multitude of colognes. [b'>I now have about 5 of them and are fab for small handbags. They are online but the earlybird tickets were gone in 10mins at the special price :-( If you are a DU customer you can get issued a password for pre sale tickets edited by emlsnre on 09/12/2013 I got 5 off the pre sale site and have been charged a booking fee of AED65 for each ticket!!! rip off central I thought they weren't your cup of tea ;) They aren't and I was setting it up for a friend at work ;-) Realised over the weekend that we can't go :( They're on the same night as Carlos Santana, who we've never seen before so we're sticking with him :) I saw him here years ago. I was chatting to my mum last night about this thread and my mum told me that when she used to run out of bubble bath after running a bath for us kids, she used to squirt Fairy Liquid in the bath tub instead ! I remember making fake beards and a bikini with the bubbles ! lol ! I doubt you will get the same effect with Pril ... Must try this again .. Ill have my Dynasty Joan Collins moment in the bath tub :P Haha my Brother and I used to do this. We also used to soak our feet in a washing up bowl with hot water and Persil washing powder in? The only mildly interesting thread today lasted 5 minutes... so, I like Pril for the nice fruity scent but it's a lot thinner so probably less economical than Fairy, the favourite from home... Discuss :D ha! ha! Hands that do dishes can be soft as your face with mild green fairy liquid. Fairy all the way for me, anything else is just false economy imho :) Do you remember the big bars of Fairy Soap as a child.. Oh the smell... takes me back ! Those big green bars cleaned absolutely everything and anything :) edited by Geordie expat on 08/12/2013 My Grandfather used to wash his hair with fairy liquid. He died with a full head of hair so it must of worked? I remember carbolic soap and it smelt awful. Wouldn't be the first time I've done that too and used it when I've bathed.
