I can see where you're all coming from regards to underage drinking etc, but surely, you've got to start trusting your kids and their judgements re friends at some point. Yes the repercussions out here would be horrendous, but I would have hoped that a stern warning from parents would do the trick. If they don't know how to say no to alcohol at this age, then I would be worried.

I honestly don't get it. What's the issue with one dry day. Nor me - it makes everyone sound like lushes. :\: I couldn't care less either. People do go into panic mode about it though ;-) I have noticed the panic mode about dry nights. So what, will they curl up and cry because they can't have a drink for one whole day/night. ;) Anyway I thought people went to the Grand Prix to watch the races, not spend their time at the bar. Seems an awfully expensive way of getting a drink. edited by Geordie expat on 28/10/2013 All sporting and music events here are reason for people to drink! The 7's is sponsored by beer I think. I suppose there is a different mentality here than at home. Not really. I've seen men at Silverstone drinking pints at 08:30 in the morning :( The only time it's not as bad is at the bikes as they are more die hard fans and come for the races, not just a day out on the pop.

So assuming there will be no alcohol served on that day, wonder how that will affect the F1 in Abu Dhabi? Shouldn't affect the F1. I would hope most are going to watch the races, not spend their time drinking. Most will want to drink, that is certain and they make a fortune from the sale of it. The rugby fell on a dry day and they exempted it as it was a major sporting event. I honestly don't get it. What's the issue with one dry day.

any ideas where I can get one from its for my small Pocket filo fax living in Mirdiff area with no car so somewhere near many thanks Is there a Borders at MCC I am sure we bought them there but it was a few years back Yes there is, but please don't ask me exactly where. Some may not agree but I use a water spray bottle. The idea is to let them know what they are allowed to do and what they not, jumping up on counters and tables is not good behaviour . A quick spray of water gives them quite a jolt and and makes them think twice about where they can and can't jump up. As GE suggested larger stones at the base of pot plants works a treat. By the way they are just adorable.........:) We tried that with a very noisy cat we had, used to wake us up all hours of the night. What do you think, ladies? No children joining us, so don't really want to be in a very child friendly environment. Looking for some glamour and champagne! Plus great food! Westin Yalumba I can't think of any other champagne brunches Both are a bit lively mind Any offers on a reasonably quiet, lunch or dinner on Christmas Day. Pretty sure one of the ADGP nights last year was (supposed to be) dry, but it went ahead as usual. (too much money to lose I would imagine.) Yes - and an International World Wide event with visitors coming from ALL over the world - no way can they cancel or move or stop or whatever!! It will go ahead as usual I am sure this happened when the 7's was on, maybe 2008-2009 It wasn't dry there I am sure they can exempt sporting events but a concert isn't a sporting event..... and concerts have been cancelled before; just sayin It doesn't affect me but I understand where everyone is coming from What time does the F1 finish as sundown is 6pm now or thereabouts The race doesn't start until 5pm and should last approx 2 hours, give or take. I think the concert gates don't even open till 7pm

Two questions about 2 month old kittens, how do I keep them away from my indoor plants ( actually its only one potted plant its too big to raise it off the ground and putting outside is not an option) and how do I keep them off the dinning table, as a rule I would like for them to learn not to climb on the dinning and kitchen table. TIA I put large stones all around the base of my pot plants, keeps the cats out of the soil. As for the dining table, they need other options to persudae them to stay away. Ours have a large cat climbing frame/toy.

I have read this thread a couple of times now and from what the OP originally said I am hoping that this poor child has learned these things from watching a movie/tv etc. I do feel that if it was anything worse she would not have been playing with dolls to show what was happening. I also agree with what others have said about the stuff you can find on TV now. I can remember years ago watching the series Rome on TV, and my adult daughter coming in and accusing me of watching p**n, purely because of one scene. So it just goes to show, you can be watching the most ordinary type of TV and just a couple of minutes s*x can make all the difference. To adults it's all part of the storyline, but to a child that age, I dread to think. I hope that the OP is able to help both the little girl and her family to overcome this.

Hi everyone My family and I are coming to Al Ain where my husband will be teaching at a British School. We have had a horrendous time in Jeddah and Qatar and although we have seen Al Ain online and have red about it, we have had such bad luck, we are still anxious....it looks like a good family place to live - we have a 21 month old and a 13 yr-old - yes, I know! Is it possible to have a chilled out life on a fairly low budget? Our apartment and utilities are paid for so our outgoings should not be high. Also is there anything I should bring from the UK that is hard to get in Al Ain? Finding tampons in Jeddah and Qatar was like looking for 4 leaf clovers...any advice would be great - we are due to arrive in December. You can get tampons in most if every supermarket In the UAE If you like vino then bring in from airport, then you can get your alcohol licence once here I find perfume, favourite brands of makeup more expensive here. Baby calpol, baby gaviscon ( They aren't here) Unless you prefer the Tam**x Compak, they're not available here :(

If you think applying online is difficult try one of the branches, absolutely and totally a nightmare - I am sure they have competitions in house to see who can reject most applications for a mismatching signature/name spelt wrongly/ account still in old owners name/ outstanding balance blah blah blah............Guess who has to go to Dewa often and loves online but anyone new won't have a UAE credit card so they have to pay by cash, or I have to use my CC and pocket their cash, then I get a scary bill the next month, I hyperventilate at the thought of Dewa - I hate them all! You can pay your DEWA through most banks with internet banking. No need to visit the branch. You can also pay it via your phone, even better :)

They won't. We will be out of control and organising fun things like an over 40, no kids thing. Now, we surely don't want that to happen now, do we? ? why would you want to do that - go to an EW coffee morning... And why would we want to do that when some of us over 40's with either no kids or no kids here work all day and would rather socialise ourselves.....

Depending where you live, Louise at Hairworks in Ibn Battuta mall is amazing I work in DIFC too and go to T&G and Claude is great, used a few of the different girls and they have always been good but I dont have a colour so I cant comment on that It's the colouring I'm really concerned about as I don't tend to have too much cut off in any case. I've heard such bad stories about people's colouring and then the trials and tribulations, not to mention the cost, of putting it right. I am becomming more worried by the moment I am not even sure if the hairdressers in T&G are actually T&G trained The lady that did mine made a mess of the colour and then cut my hair lobsided! There is a new place in liberty House but I have only had my hair blow dried by them so cannot advise on colour/cut sorry No worries. Thanks for the advice about Roots. Will give them a call

Its tough trying to fit everything in! Just typical of life in Dubai. Sometimes I feel we are like little hamsters on a wheel trying to do it all......................... At least you are still getting your exercise GE :) You're right it was never this difficult back in the UK, we had evenings there ;)

I know hairdressers have been done to death on here, I've searched through all the old threads :) I really need to have my hair cut and coloured and as I work in DIFC was thinking about trying Toni & Guy there. We've always gone to Northern Cyprus during April and it's lovely. Some days can be really hot, but not all the time, most days are lovely and pleasant and 'touchwood' we've never had any rain (yet!!) Just be warned though that the nights can get quite cool/cold.

thanks for listening, just needed a rant. After taking a week off work I am glad to be back in the office for a rest! Am defo not going to let this happen again. Feeling very annoyed with myself, guess I just paid for stuff rather than having the awkward conversation to ask him to pay up or split the bill. My friends never expect me to pa for them they, they go grocery shopping, bring as much alcohol in as they can etc I always treat them to brunch at least once. One of my couple friends do my washing and ironing and the man does any DIY I need ha I had to make him a cooked breakfast every morning bcos he wont eat carbs. He wouldnt even make himself a cup of tea/coffee. I paid for the taxi's as he kept saying he didnt have cash. i drove him to an ATM to sort that out but on the way home each night he was drunk so asleep in the taxi which is why I ended up paying the bill at the bars also. Then he would be asleep when the takeout turned up! I got one drink out of ther bottle of Absolut, when it was empty he went to the bar and paid for his own drinks. thats where all my money went..... Sandance was a blast though, Killers were awesome. You made him a cooked breakfast OMG, I would say here is the cereal/toaster etc crack on! He sounds like a princess lol Definitely not someone I would call a 'friend', more of a leech. I'm in the same position, mine are all grown up and back in the UK with kids of their own, and they told me it was fine as long as I didn't talk about them :) Which I'm more than happy to agree to. A few people where we live have mentioned this and we all suspect it's greedy landlords trying to scare them into moving out, so they can ask higher rents. I do know though, that a number have also won their cases when they have taken the landlord to court. Unfortunately a lot of landlords have no idea of the laws regarding tenants. Thank you If you can wait till the weekend I can let you have a copy of a document that someone created with all the info required for tenants in situations like this.
