All I can say about the OU is that I studied with them in the UK as I was a single Mum and couldn't get to classes in the evenings. We used things like messenger to have conferences, so I suppose it may be possible to use that sort of thing from here, to keep in touch with tutors and other students on the same course. Sorry I can't help with the delivery of course materials, but I do know that the first package gave me plenty to start with. I am going back a good few years now, but I'm sure they'll be able to email a lot of stuff to you. They are very helpful so I would just ask them all the questions you can think of. Just had another thought. They also have, or did have a brilliant forum similar to this one. It's not only for course work, you can talk about anything. I made a number of good friends on there.

Thanks for the replies ladies. And hats off to you! You have all my respect when, after a divorce, you dedicate yourself to your kids and their future. Power moms! Was there sometimes a doubt in your mind after you got divorced, like 'was it all my fault?' 'am I made for relationships?' or 'will I be able to be successful in a second marriage?' Oh yes, quite a lot of the time. Luckily I had the girls to keep me sane and very rarely went on 'dates', although when they were older they did tell me I should. Sometimes, even now, in my 50s and happily married, I do very occasionally wonder if I could/should have done something different, but my DH who knows all about my past manages to convince me none of it was my fault

he has had his visa cancelled this morning unfortunately That's pretty unusual - most companies issuing redundancy would at least wait a month or two before visa cancellation to allow the person some grace time to find a new job. I assume he signed for his end of service payment on visa cancellation, is he sure it was correct etc? I also find that strange as my DH had the same issue last year but was given a couple of months grace to try and find another job. It's not costing the company anything unless there is something else going on !!

Wow, MrsB...You are amazing! Amazing???? Hardly .... What would you do with two small boys and nothing else? You would have two choices: 1. go on welfare and sentence your sons to a life of mediocrity or 2. rise to the occasion and do what you have to ... I chose the latter. Insha'allah "Notnewintown" will also chose the path both Geordie Expat and I chose and give herself and her children another chance at a better life. It is very hard but it is possible. You definitely did better than me MrsB. I unfortunately had to do any job I could just to keep a roof over our heads as I had no other income !!! I was always a firm believer that I had to put the girls first and an unhealthy family relationship was not going to do them any good.

I was divorced with two young girls and yes it was a struggle, especially money wise, but we made it. Both have grown up into healthy happy adults and I have become a grandmother to two. As for me I spent most of my late 20' to early 40's being a single Mum looking after the girls, but it's never too late. Here I am now, married to a wonderful man only a year ago - we had been together for a few years before that. We're in our 50's and have just completed the first year of an amazing new adventure here in Dubai. So YES there very definitely is life after divorce. OK it may take some time, but be strong and you'll become a better woman for it.

I would definitely get your daughter's birth certificate attested, before you come out here. I have never had my birth certificate attested and I'm on DH sponsorship. Neither has he for his work.

The DF is "up there" with trashy papers like The Sun. Nobody with any sense actually buys these gutter press rags. We don't buy any to be honest, did so years ago as they are great for lining rabbits hutches! In Holland we call it decorated toilet paper :p I'm a child of the 50s and I remember my gran tearing up squares of newspaper as loo paper when she ran out of that lovely shiny scratchy stuff!! :D Was it in a green wrapper called Izel, or something like that? Shiny on one side and scratchy on the other That's the one, useless stuff but my gran swore by it (I just swore at it!!) You can still buy it!! I'm surprised you can still buy it, it was so bad. We knew all about the company from posts on here, but were happy to listen to the guy who came to see us. I was not prepared to tar all employees with the same brush and have been very pleasantly surprised. All I will say is not all employees are bad.

We've transferred all our pensions offshore and so far been very pleased. We weren't forced into anything and were allowed to take as much time as we wanted before deciding where to deposit our funds. All the products they offer are offshore savings plans. Nothing is based here in the UAE. It is the way that "some" of their consultants manage your policies. If you like the guy - check out his credentials, and make sure he is actually qualified to do what he says he can, being given a license to operate and know what he is doing in this industry are TWO VERY different things! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend our guy. He's knowledgeable, not pushy and keeps in touch every six months or so, unless we need to get in touch and he's never let us down yet.

Both of my DD's wrapped theirs up for Santa when they were about 2. I kept a couple back just in case, but I think due to all the Christmas excitement, they were forgotten about by the time New Year came. I did ensure that they got a special present from Santa in exchange :)

No just DH - no signature from me at any time on application.....:-( Do they double double check licenses? Never had any license requirements in RAK so new to this.. Sorry can't help with that. You may need DH to go and do the 'shopping' in this case, or ring one of the shops and ask if / how you can be added.

I think their usual opening hours are 10am, but I'd heard that all A&E and MMI weren't opening until after sunset during Ramadan? No the one in TECOM is usual opening hours.

Not sure, but I don't think they open till about 2pm. No issue with the license as long as you were named on it originally. I always for the 'shopping' on my own :) Unfortunately I am not named - just DH...... My name isn't on the license, but I signed the form when we applied for it and DH handed in a NOC too, so I could use it without him.

We often find that if we don't want to go with a big hotel, which is most of the time, it's nearly always better value to book directly with the hotel/b&b. They will often give you more of a discount.

I am not sure about other airlines but if you fly Emirates they will send a car out to you, they always pick us up, but I do not know about car seats. Thought that was only if you fly Business or First Class?

Sorry can't advise on the car seats. Everything else about them is very professional and reliable. They will text you when the car is on it's way. Let you know the make and your driver's name and number. Then again text you when the car arrives to pick you up. I honestly wouldn't use anyone else, whether it's an important run or just a trip out.

I may be wrong, but as far as I know you can only get a birth certificate from the country of birth, so yours will be a Dubai BC. You will then be able to get a British passport for the twins.

Fab thanks- that's the only thing putting us off. That said, we barely use our pool at the moment, so I think we'd probably be okay! Are there are districts you would recommend? We live in District 5E away from the main road and love it. All I can recommend is to stay away from either of the two main roads. The one through the middle and the one which runs along by the pylons. I do wonder about the pool thing, but I suppose it will be a novelty to start with :)

Thanks GE! Are you in JVT? Why are you looking to move out? That is where we are strongly considering atm! Yes, we're in JVT. We love the villa, the space, the neighbourhood and it's great for the pets. We'll have been here two years come the turn of the year and to be honest, I just fancy somewhere with a communal pool. It's the only thing I really miss out here. Mind if we do move the new property will have to match the one we have at the moment, so that could be a slight problem. If you have any questions about JVT I'd be glad to try and help.

I was going to recommend a villa that just became free and might still be available outside of Uptown, about 3 minutes away, in a nice compound but to be honest if it is for next year it will not be possible to rent anything now, as they will want you to start paying immediately. You pretty much have to look and get it straight away when you find something you like at the time you want to move. good luck though! Do you mind sharing the contact details? I'm willing to try it, but don't quite get the full picture on how to go about it. Thanks! OK so this is an old wives tale, but it's always worked for us when we've moved our cats. Butter his paws, try and keep him a bit longer but at least when he goes out, he'll have the house scent on him and should hopefully find his way back. As I said it's always worked for us, but we have had some nightmare times for the first couple of weeks. Just make sure he's got plenty to play with, even if he doesn't normally play with toys in the house. Good luck. Yes just as Nomad said, put a little butter on each paw and let him walk around the house before he is allowed out. It's supposed to help them retain the smell of home and help them find it again. The other idea someone once told me about, is to leave trails of his litter around the boundary and perhaps even a blanket with his is your scent on near the door. Hopefully all this should help him find his own house again, but most importantly make sure, if you can that his microchip is registered with a site similar to one we used in the UK which keeps a database of all pets details. This can be a godsend if he does go walkabout. Sorry I didn't explain the buttered paws properly, but I have only just managed to get back online. Good luck and let us know how he gets on.

I use Persil white for whites and Persil colour for coloureds. I thought perhaps it maybe the water? Could be the water? Powder is always preferable to liquid though. I use powder for my whites and liquid for my coloureds and occasionally vanish, but not all the time.
