Make sure you use a detergent designed for whites. Dry them outside in direct sunlight and the enzymes in the detergent will carry on working with the sun. It may take a few washes if they are really greyish, but it does work.

I agree with that the other ladies are saying. It's a lovely area of the country with very good road and rail links. Lots of gorgeous countryside all around and some truly stunning properties in gorgeous pretty villages. Take a look on Rightmove.co.uk and put in Newbury and a 15 mile radius with a budget and you'll get some stunning properties that are on the market for sale or for rent. also some lovely schools if you need schools too. Happy house hunting! Oh the pleasure of Rightmove. Wouldn't it be lovely to have that out here :)

Most people do the Open University thing. Study online and work at the same time. Takes a bit longer but it can be done. One of my friends just got her marketing degree that way. Took her 5 years to finish but she completed it and was happy with her experience. I was just logging in to suggest the same thing. I've done a few courses with them and they have been really good.

To the OP - have a look at Northern Cyprus for an affordable villa with private pool and gardens. Also very secluded beaches along the Northernmost tip of the coastline. I can second that. There are some very reasonably priced villas in Northern Cyprus, away from the crowds and the weather is lovely there at the moment :)

DH had the same about 2 weeks ago and only really got over it at the weekend. Not sure if it's a strain of the Norovirus or not, but it really floored him, especially nearer the end. He wouldn't go to the doctor ;)

Your best option is to go to iftar at a Muslim family home. If you have Muslim friends, they will probably be very happy to have you over. I think the ones at the hotels are a huge waste of money (and not in the spirit of Ramadan at all). Like :-) And in a Muslim home, you will also get the true feeling of Ramadan, not just the WOW factor! edited by mrsb. on 08/07/2013 Nothing better than breaking the fast with my sisters, pray together.. No wasting of food either. One iftar I did like was the one in MediaOne Hotel. It's not too big, but has a really nice selection of food and good service. Other than that, I am anti-tent lol. What has a tent ever done to you ;-) It has zero to do with Ramadan, it's all about lining up to get as much food as you can to stuff yourself and to watch waiters carry away half full plates with food that will be thrown away. When this month should be about moderation, solidarity with the people who have no food, whose fast never breaks. And to be honest, the food is not that special either. One of the reasons I recommended the SMCCU, especially since it will the OP's first Ramadan. I would definitely go back again <em>edited by Geordie expat on 08/07/2013</em>

Sorry can't suggest a WOW one as never tried one. For traditional ones you really should go to the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Centre for Cultural Undertanding http://www.cultures.ae/index.php/ramadan2013 It's amazing, gives you a great insight into the aspects of Ramadan and their religion and believe it or not - it's fun. If I'm allowed to say that about it :)

Sakhifa are you really saying just because there are *staff* to do it for you means you can't do it yourself? Yes it does create a queue because the till person has to scan the items, take the payment and then pack the shopping while the spoilt brat stands there staring gormlessly at her...! Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. I'm not saying I personally, "can't", but it's certainly my right to choose not to. Letting someone else do their job (which as customers we are paying for anyway) doesn't necessarily make one spoiled. Or perhaps it does. We have cleaners, maids, nanny's, patrol attendants, etc. Does it mean we CAN'T perform those jobs? No. But others have been given jobs to do so. How will you cope when you go home and will have none of the above staff? I will cope very well, just as well as you. Why wouldn't I? Sorry if I've missed a bit here, but you're saying you'll wait for the cashier to pack your bag at the checkout, just 'cause you chose not to.

yeah the site looks pretty decent... and the listings look original as well... i just wish they had a provision for landlords to post directly as well... would save loads of potential clients having to pay exorbitant commissions to agents (many of whom who do nothing in particular!!) 'Like' We were lucky in that we found and excellent agent, who definitely earned his commission 5 times over :)

Can you post privately on www.propertyfinder.ae When we moved here last year, that was the only site we used. Dubizzle was an absolute nightmare. just went through their website and unfortunately there is no provision for listings for landlords... only for agents (and that too the cheapest option is listing of 100 properties for AED 1750 per month I did wonder, as that site seems very similar to the likes of Rightmove back in the UK. Perhaps it's because of the cost that majority of the postings are pretty true and honest.

I get what you're saying Geordie Expat, kids are certainly not cheap, however, I do think once you've had one, the next few aren't that much more due to economies of scale lol! Maybe we are fortunate as I do not need to worry about buying DD what she needs (and a h*ll of a sight more!) and we now have so much stuff that we will only really have to buy clothes when we have our next (is it wrong that I have already bought clothes for an unborn baby - I could not resist!) I would like 3 or 4 but DH only wants 2. I feel sad that I might only have 1 more pregnancy but I think I will wear him down with the third. All children are a blessing if you ask me, although I do understand there are those who don't like / want them. I wouldn't dare generalise and say we all want kids, but I think what Kayra was trying to say is that as women it is something within us to reproduce so these are primeval feelings. JoyceB fingers crossed for your DD - I have a friend currently pregnant through IVF so praying all goes well xx TDB I totally understand what you're saying about more than one not costing much more in the overall scheme of things. I was totally of the same opinion until my husband left me and disappeared from the radar. No maintenance, nothing. I'm not saying that this could happen to any of you, it's just how I feel. If I had had more kids it would have been far too much of a struggle, which it was at the best of times. I would have loved more as I really enjoyed every part of things even the pregnancy :) Just my feelings.

Sorry guys can I just say one last thing, from me and probably get shot down for it. You all seem so sure that the good times will last and you'll always be able to afford all the children. Things happen and outcomes aren't always what you thought they would be. Kids grow up and become more and more expensive. I know this sounds awful, but why don't you just be thankful for what you've got and enjoy them to the full. You are not wrong for saying that. My children are little now so everything is hunky dory but I do wonder what the teenage years will be like and how it is probably easier to deal with them when you don't have so many children. When I think about how bad my siblings were to my mother when they were teenagers, I feel scared. I hope to never be treated like that by my children... Thank you for saying that. I feel so bad being so against it. It was the money side of things which concerned me most and due to a sudden change in circumstances when both of mine were small, it turned out to be the right decision. You all seem to have such great lives out here, but what happens if/when they come to an end. <em>edited by Geordie expat on 04/07/2013</em>

Once the visa process in underway and the PRO applies for the local amendment, the EID card process will begin. She can't go for that or her medical without the letter from the ID centre. It just proves that she had one previously. PS Even a copy won't do as we tried this with a new employee <em>edited by Geordie expat on 04/07/2013</em>

I did mine a few years ago in departures at the airport. I only had my passort but it was probably before ID cards so I would suggest you take both. They took the photo and the whole process only took 20 minutes but I guess that will depend on how busy they are so allow plenty of time if you have a flight to catch. You can now have your egate added to your ID card but not sure if this service is available at the airport or not (had mine done in the Dnata building on SZR) We were going to get ours added on to our ID cards, but have heard some horror stories of them not working. Also would you ever get them to expire at the same time?? Got ours done at the airport couple of months ago and didn't even have time to stop for a coffee. They used our photos, but then gave them back when they had copied them. All we took were our passports and ID cards. A couple of times mine hasn't worked but that was due to a problem with the machines so even those who had normal egate cards had problems. I thought ID cards and egate cards were all linked to your residency visa, so they would all expire / need renewing at the same time? No we were told that if our ID cards expired before the Egate card we would lose what was left on it. May have been wrong though.

You need your passport/ID. They take your picture there and then (incl in the price of aed 200) There is a desk as soon as you get to the airport (departures), however, when we got there we were told that the person who deals with Egate cards wasn't there. No more info given, very unhelpful and rude staff. There is another place where you can get it done - just go through the passport control, and take a turn right straight after.. towards gates F or so... you will see some security checks there for business class I think, ask them to let you out again as the Egate office is just next to them (you will be able to see it on the side, you will have to go through the scanner again). It sounds silly but that's how it is set up, I think it's very hard to find them as there are no signs, and none of the airport security staff knew where it was or were able to advise us (only a cleaner knew it!!) There is only one guy doing the cards so make sure you arrive earlier (he is also very lonely there so likes to talk to each customer A LOT :) ) He advised we get a separate Egate card. Also, if you have Emirates Airmiles card you get Egate card for free, according to him. Only if it's higher than the basic level

Thanks for all this. DH and I will be using KLM and transferring at Schipol for our flight back to the UK in Sept. Going doesn't seem too bad time wise, but coming back we only have 1 hour between landing and taking off again !! Plenty of time I did this at Xmas no issue They know you are connecting so sometimes hold the plane for you That sounds ok then. I had visions of having to turn into some sort of crazy middle aged sprinter :) Also I suppose if you miss it because your first plane is delayed, they will put you on the next plane out. If it had been my call I would have waited till the next plane 'cause 1 hour between flights doesn't seem very long.

I would have loved a little boy to join my two gorgeous daughters. BUT had to make a decision on the financial implication this would have, especially in the future. Also what if I'd had another girl, would I have kept on trying. I do know some women who have ended up with more children then they planned to have doing this. It's ok to think, yes we can afford to bring up 3 or more children, but, and sorry to have to say this. What would happen if the money suddenly decreased.. I still sometimes wonder if things would have been different if we'd had another baby, but also remember the great times my girls had, which may not have been possible with more children. It's not just a case of how you feel now, you need to look to the future. I know of some people whose income kept increasing with each child they had. [b'>That must be the exception rather than the norm.[/b'> Basically God is the provider for each human being. Sure you need to look to the future and all, but having just one more child shouldn't be too difficult in many cases. You can cut your expenses, live a more economical life rather than spending more on luxury items, and save more for the future. [b'> Luxuries are something some people never have, so are unable to cut them out.[/b'> I'm not saying one should have 6 children. That many may even be too difficult for the mother to raise properly she'll end up becoming negligent on some matter. I've seen people with too many misbehaved children and it makes me mad. If you can't raise them well, then don't have so many. Really a few children with proper manners are better than many children with bad manners. Yet a friend of my daughter has 5 children all under 8 and they are the most polite well behaved kids I know. It's swings and roundabouts. All I'm saying is knowing what I do now, I don't regret not having any more than 2. They're best of friends and I think that if I'd had three I would have wanted a fourth, so one wasn't feeling left out, which I know can happen and that would have just been too much, even with two parents working.

you pick your grandstand as that depends on how much action you want to see, we were in the south grandstand at that has the tunnel and bends, you can also if you pick the right seat see the finish lines as well. Yep, we picked the hairpin hoping for some action, but nothing. No doubt this year as we've changed to the south, everything will happen down there ;)

It all depends on what type of ticket you buy and for how many days. As the OP said if you buy three, 3 day tickets you get one car park permit which means you can drive in and walk. All I can say is we had seats in the North Grandstand last year and it was too hot to use them until the sun started to set and you couldn't get in anywhere else to watch the free practice. Although we did manage to sneak round to the side in the shade. I would imagine that the new general admission tickets will be the same as there will be no shade at all during the day, until race time. Not good if DH wants to watch the practice and support races. All the ordinary grandstand tickets just get you admission on the day and to the concert that evening. A three day ticket gets you Access to Public Pit Lane Walk Thursday 31st October. To be honest it depends on how much of a petrol head the person you're buying the tickets for is :)

yes its very easy..... its only here that you dont hve to do it yourself, the rest of the world does it, and even in america you have to pay first before you pump. in auh we had self service ones for a while, did it work, nope because people still expected them to pump the petrol for them, even at the self service..... When we were in Northern Cyprus a couple of months ago, we found that they fill your car for you too. Even though I hadn't been in Dubai a year by then, it took the attendant a few minutes to get it through to me that he wanted the keys to unlock the petrol cap. So used to just pulling a lever in the car here :) We'll be back in the UK in September for a holiday and I don't have a problem with filling my car. What I do have a problem with is watching the cost going up on the pump :( And now I've just seen this http://www.autoz.ae/news/Gas-pumps-to-accept-Credit-cards-soon.html Whatever next :) :) <em>edited by Geordie expat on 04/07/2013</em>

Sorry I'm neither person CW, but I have used Pegasus Airlines before. We traveled from Stansted to Ercan and it was fine. Not sure if you've ever used Easyjet before, but I would say that they are on a par with them. We took our own food and drink on board, the plane was perfectly clean and serviceable and the staff were great. The captain even came down to apologise when we were held up on the ground in Turkey as someone had got lost on their way to the gate !!! I do think that as far as staff are concerned, you can have issues with them no matter which airline you travel with. My last flight on Emirates, I had to practically beg for a drink after they'd served the meal. Yet the one before they couldn't do enough for you. I would certainly use Pegasus again.

why dont people just eat before they go out and drink descretly whilst they are in the car ?!! My child is now used to Ramadan being a no public eating no drinking before sunset. Ive explained to him that we must learn to respect those who are fasting and also those who are less fortunate and dont get to eat or drink every day and in particular children who are starving. I may get slammed down for this but I think its a very important time to use this oppertunity to educate children on tolerance, patience and those less fortuante. It is for only a month and not that difficult to observe. I so agree with your comments OK so I don't have kids, and I'm definitely not pregnant, but those things aside, why can't people just arrange their outings around meals. Also I'm sure the kids won't come to any harm if they do without for a couple of hours. Sorry but I also can't see the point of having to have somewhere to go and eat or drink behind a blackout curtain. Are people so desperate that they can't manage a trip out without food or drink. We are living in someone else's country, so we should accept it for what it is and embrace it. <em>edited by Geordie expat on 30/06/2013</em>

We still have occasional problems in JVT with taxis. They either get lost, or don't want to come this far out. A lot of the residents, now use Careem, especially if they need to get picked up for something special, as their cars have Sat Nav and the drivers can find their way around the place.

Thank you! Take it she can buy the silver card from Rashidya metro station directly? Yes and they cost around 20 or 25 AED, but that only gives you 14 AED credit, so depending where she's going and what she's doing it may be wise to put some more on straight away. As someone else said they never expire.

Why not embrace the month of Ramadan and book an iftar in one of the tents in one of the hotels? I am sure 1 celebration without booze won't kill anyone. I would not be amused if I came home from a long prayer or trying to sleep so I can wake up for suhoor only to find my neighbors having a party in their garden. But then I don't know the make up of your neighborhood. I agree with you ... As a Muslim, I would be not be amused if my neighbours were "partying" while our family was observing Ramadan, especially as this is my DD's first full Ramadan and she is very excited. As this is your first Ramadan, why not join an Iftar dinner in one of the big hotels and experience this wonderful time of year in a traditional style to celebrate your DH birthday. You will enjoy it!!!! I definitely second that. I'm really looking forward to joining some different Iftar's this year. We only did the one at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre last year, which was amazing and really enlightening, and dare I say it fun.

Yes AC - there was a lady who wrote a blog about what happened when her twins were crushed by a chest of drawers that fell on top of them. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2279154/Mother-twins-crushed-death-reveals-depth-grief-TV-interview-accident.html Absolutely devastating. At what age do you start babyproofing? My baby is bum scooching and trying to crawl. I already want to secure our glass cabinet to the wall, I think you can buy the things from Ikea. We have these plastic hooks to secure the blind cords already. What else needs doing? A health visitor back in the UK suggested to me when my two were little and starting to get around, that I should get down on the floor and see what I was able to reach, grab hold of, put my fingers into and bump into. I also did the same around where their cots and beds were. Gave me a good insight into the amount of danger in the house.
