Thanks ladies Went on Saturday late afternoon and it was great. Lovely and quiet. Unfortunately our guests couldn't find exactly what they wanted, but they're going back by themselves during the week. I on the other hand, who didn't want or need anything, came back with an almost empty purse. But it was great and our first trip will definitely not be our last. :)

I always go first thing, 9.30am or 10am, parking no problem then. I like the shop called Liverpool (for bags, purses, cocky watches, Ugg Boots tc) you can't miss it, and ask for the "live here price, not tourist". Also, Thai shop at end on left of Liverpool when facing Liverpool has brilliant prices on pashminas. Enjoy! Thanks

You've nailed it...I keep telling my kids that the tests are for the teachers/school. With league tables etc, the schools have to put pressure on. School I worked in UK got hammered by Ofsted becos we had a group of kids who made no improvement in one year...Ofsted's response was that the teachers had failed. If you knew the circumstances of the children and their role models I don't think even the best teacher in the world have have helped them learn subjects they were neither interested in nor would probably ever use. The only issue now with Ofsted and the likes is that I believe many UK Uni's look at a schools report when selecting pupils. I may be wrong about this and am happy to stand corrected.

Exam systems with continuous assessment build in do offer an element of helping those who struggle with exam pressure etc. I believe there probably does need to be an element of exams and swotting for them etc, but too. often I see parents of primary aged kids pushing their kids, and then as. Feefmick has said a year 7 doing full tests on year's knowledge! Way too much too soon. Really if our generation got to Uni without this pressure why do we need to do this to our kids? I think a well rounded person, who has good social skills, conversational skills, etc as well as a decent educational background will do far better at interview than the poor soul who has been kept in being overloaded with school work! my oldest has severe test anxiety and its been and still is a tough time at the moment as doing GCSEs, the other one is in year 10, but in their school they do internal testing at the end of each year in seniors, i think its good as it gets them into the swing of it, the internal exams are not pressured but they would be doing some sort of assessing anyways each year in order to set the kids correctly the follow year. I agree. We had internal exams and tests throughout the school year. They were never as bad as we were only competing against our classmates. Also in those 'dark and distant days' there wasn't as much pressure on the school to prove itself to various boards. I think that's another reason teachers put pressure on the kids, even if they don't realise they're doing it.

If it's any help, we live in JVT and the plot numbers and villa numbers are different. When we sorted our DEWA they had the plot number not the villa number. We now quote both for anything like this.

I was one of those who left school in the '70's. Didn't go to Uni, but that was for family reasons. Majority of my friends did and most did very well. All we had was the 11 plus, which decided if you went to the local Grammar School or Comprehensive. Then we had O'Levels then A'Levels. None of us appear to have suffered from the lack of too many exams and tests. I feel that we were able to be much more social and have done better in the long term as we spent more time with our friends and family and weren't stressed out about school work. Yes we studied hard, but we also played hard. Yes all parents want their children to do well academically, but from a personal point of view and I know 'cause I went through it with one of my kids, if pushed this often works the opposite way.

Thanks for this. I'll leave it up to my guests to choose when they would prefer to go. No MissMoiselle unfortunately never had the time :( and yes they want handbags and pashminas, that sort of thing. Don't have any posh clothes or bling jewellery so we're ok there :) Thanks for the tips about bargaining. Someone else also told me to try the tactic, of showing the money I was prepared to pay and saying that was all my husband would give me. Fingers crossed we have a successful trip. Will keep you informed.

The North IS lovely, both the mountains and the historical sites (spectacular castles and an old abbey) and it is much less commercialised than the South, and yes it is cheaper by far to shop and eat. However it is much harder to get to, unless you fly via Turkey. If you land in Larnaca there is a long and very expensive taxi drive to the North, you cannot take a rental car over the border. Just came back couple of weeks ago. 200 Turkish lira for a private taxi and the journey took around an hour. If you hire a car in the North the hire company will automatically send a taxi as part of the deal. We didn't do that this time as we were only there for a week, but have done it before. That would work.........a lot cheaper than the mafia taxis at Larnaca! If anyone ever needs it I've got the number :)

I can only add to this from the parents and grandparents perspective. DH and I had to come out here as a last resort for him to find some work. We have left 3 children, all in their 20's and 2 gorgeous grandchildren behind. Unfortunately, due to both of our previous work (or lack of) situations, we cannot afford to help them with the fares to visit us just yet. We have one planned trip back this year for our youngest daughters wedding. All I can suggest is Skype, Face Book, WhatsApp and any other means of communication you can find. It's been our lifeline for the last twelve months. Hope you manage to get through this.

RE: those who jumped at my throat 1. i say its her stupidity that caused the damage. did I say with a single word I thoughts she did it on purpose? 2. I brought this particular example up but also said there is something happening on a regular basis that should not. just to give you all an idea: rubbish regularly left inside the house, dirty/wet cleaning cloths thrown on top my my make up, the living room furniture always w/o exception pushed around and left differently than how I told her, so that after each cleaning I go home I have to move furniture back into its place. She forgets, she is in a hurry, she is distracted, whatever. I never thought she does anything bad on purpose, but it doesn't change that I'm either moving furniture, taking out garbage (I also have a cat, so imagine what the cat does with the garbage bag left in the living room by the time I'm home), cleaning the make up kit off the chemicals or water she dumped on it, or now I have to figure out what I do about the curtain. And no, its not a matter of its just a curtain. In Ikea you might find curtains for couple hundred, but if you spent a lot more on them, trust me, it does bother you if it gets destroyed Well maybe its time you need a new maid. As someone said, they're meant to make your life easier, and she's clearly not. Or have you ever thought you're expecting too much from her in the time allowed

Ahahah my baby sleeps through anything - hoover, hairdryer, washing machine, shower. She has her own special "blend" of noise at nighttime which is loud a/c, humidifier swirling and loud crashing waves on the ipad. As for the agency maid - she probably cleans 25 different houses a week. She won't remember everyone's pet peeves and foibles so if you have to remind her every time then so be it. She is not sponsored by you so she can't be on hand to clean in everyone's personal style in every house she goes to. I request an agency maid who speaks English and can read then I write down a list of everything she has to do - she ticks it all off and we are all happy. I am sure she didn't mean to ruin your curtains by accident, no need to be stern. Which agency please TDB I use Jumeira Maids - they've sent some rubbish ones so you have to choose carefully. I can't remember the name of our one as I'm always out when she comes, but ask for a maid who reads so you can leave detailed instructions. Last time I came home and she was using masking tape to get dust off the curtains!! Thanks I'll give them a call

Spinneys give cash refunds for household items. I bought a few light bulbs, which looked the right size in the shop, got them home and they were too big. Left them in the car for a few weeks, as I kept on forgetting to take them back into the shop with me, but as I still had the receipt they were only too pleased to refund the amount off my purchase. I need to add that the bulbs were actually bought using a credit card and they refunded me on a cash purchase. That is true, however they would prefer you do bought more shopping with your return! I was making another purchase at the time, but they would have been quite happy to give me my cash back as I asked before getting to the tills.

Sorry but the crinkling of bags waking the baby made me laugh. When mine were babies over 20 years ago, they had to learn to sleep while I hoovered and did the housework. It was the only time I had the chance, if I wanted to spend time playing with them. I know things are different out here, but honestly, surely it's to your advantage if your baby can sleep through household noises. My baby can happily sleep through hoovering, siblings screaming and the school run with 5 bellowing children but turn a shower on within 100m and he's awake in a shot! Just a question then and I certainly don't want to get into a slanging match over this, but what do you do when he wakes up. I just used to go back let them know I was still there and then get on. They soon realised I hadn't left them and it was just another noise to get used to. I do the same for my 2 grandchildren.

I have 3 children, including a 6 month old. This woman is constantly making noises that wake up my baby when he is napping. Of course I've told her (many times before), to be quiet and not make noise when the baby is asleep. Even as I type this, she is walking around crinkling plastic bags while my baby is asleep! Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhg!!!! If something as minor as crinkling plastic bags is going to disturb your baby, it might be an idea to have your maid take breaks when your baby is sleeping. Better to have a well rested baby than a spotless house. Having a maid is meant to make your life easier, it the cons are outweighing the pros then it's not worth having one. Just found this. Hope it helps Law number 33 of 2008 Article (25) 2. Landlord may demand eviction of tenant upon expiry of tenancy contract limited to the following cases c. If the owner of the property wishes to recover the property for use by him personally or by his next of kin of first degree provided that he proves that he does not own a suitable alternative property for that purpose. d. If the owner of the property wishes to sell the leased property And for the purpose of clause (2) of this Article, landlord must notify tenant with reasons for eviction at least twelve months prior to the determined date of eviction subject that such notice be sent through the Notary Public or by registered mail. All the TH are hard to get hold of, but it's worth a drive around to see if there any notices hanging outside. There are some villas available, but they're asking 130 - 140. Not sure if they'll actually get that but they're certainly trying. If you want I would suggest trying Mazz Ali at Goldenwaves as they have a number of properties here.

We love it. We've got 2 dogs and 3 cats and the space both in and outside the villa is great. Yes there were snags when we first moved in, but we were the first tenant's in our villa. They were sorted quickly by both Nakheel and our LL. I think now that most of the properties will be well past the snagging stage. OK so we don't have any shops, but that isn't a problem as Springs is only a couple of minutes away and we should be getting a Geant between us and Jumeirah Park soon. We get residents rates at Jumeirah Islands Club, which is great. The parks, tennis courts and basketball courts are almost finished now which makes it lovely to walk around at night. If you would like to know anything else just shout.

Hi lovedubai We live in JVT and it really depends on the gardens and what's in them grass and plant wise. Without a garden ours was a maximum of 1500 and that was leaving one a/c on all day for the pets. During the winter months is went down to 500 and that included the housing fee. We don't have kids so I would assume that would also make a difference as we could manage with only one a/c on majority of the time.

Oh thanks everyone. we are actually leaving Dubai to UK about a week after he will get paid so I just hope they dont freeze it as we will only have a week max to sort it out, obviously we want to send the money immediately elsewhere but if they freeze it we won't be able to. We were with Lloyds but now it's HSBC of course. Anyone else been in that situation - leaving the country so has to be sorted quick etc ?! sorry forgot to explain that ..... lol wish us luck :) If I were you, as soon as the final pay goes in I would try and transfer as much as you can back home and draw enough out to keep you going until you leave. Then if that works there won't be much left to freeze. Or can he not just ask his company not to mention that it's a full and final. edited by Geordie expat on 04/04/2013

When I lost my previous job they didn't freeze my account and I had 2 credit cards with them. I got told that it is only if the employer informs the bank that you are no longer employed by them that they will freeze the account. If they don't say anything then the bank is none the wiser! That's what I heard too. If your employer mention 'full and final' when the money goes in. I still don't understand how our bank didn't query the fact that nothing was going in, it was only coming out. But hey ho that's life out here :)

Yep I was with nameless 4 letter bank too and no freeze until maybe a year later when they worked out my salary payments were coming from elsewhere lol! DH is with ADCB and they suspended his CC, froze his account and made him sign loads of things to unfreeze it all! Oh well we've got a few more months until that happens then TDB :-) Mind we have tried to give them his new work details and they don't want to know.

My account was not frozen when my gratuity was paid in, however I did not inform them I was changing jobs. we are with adcb and thats what happened when we changed jobs, lots of money in the account, no loans, no probs with credit card been with them 16 years....!!!! premium customer, but there policy is to freeze until you can prove otherwise etc. That's what I mean about the different banks. We are with the nameless 4 letter bank. They didn't bat an eyelid and we had a credit card and a loan. Even when we reduced our CC payments to the minimum, they still didn't query anything.

They didn't freeze ours when DH lost his job, neither did they query why there was no money going in for a while. I think it just depends on the bank and the staff.
