Yes some of the asking prices in JVT are now around the 120 - 140k mark. JVC is coming on, but it's still quite a building site in places. I think because there's a number of different developers in there, but you can get a lot for your money. If you want an agent that deals in the JVT/JVC area try Mazz Ali at Goldenwave Propertys. edited by Geordie expat on 04/04/2013

Green Community is lovely, we often go there to eat and shop. The only downside is the traffic getting in and out. The road system can't cope with the amount. We used to take our dogs to daycare there and it was an absolute nightmare at rush hour. We live in JVT and the villas are lovely, plenty of space inside and out and we get reduced membership at Jumeirah Islands Club. My DH works in DIFC and now the Al Khail road is open can get there in about 20 minutes. We left all of our furniture in the UK and we're pleased we did as it was so reasonable to buy new stuff here. A few people we know did ship theirs out, but then replaced it as it either didn't look right or didn't fit. There's loads of places to look depending on your tastes - Home Centre, QHomes, Marina, to name just a few. Also try property.ae for rentals.

Has anyone ever tried to redeem their Air Miles for flights? Do you know where you can fly to and which airlines are included? it says on their website. Thanks. That's changed since the last time I looked.

We're not going back to the UK until September and even the prices for then have shot up. We've ended up booking with KLM and having a short stopover in Amsterdam both ways. Doing it this way has saved us around AED 4000. Should probably have said that we're flying to Newcastle which is expensive at the best of times :( edited by Geordie expat on 31/03/2013

To be honest majority of the good paying roles need degrees. If I was you I would try and get a PA role to get experience in that field. That should also give you plenty of admin experience at the same time. The only other field I can think of is HR, but I'm sure there are others on here who can give more advice.

Majority of the reception jobs I looked as were paying less than 5k a month, even some of the PA roles pay less than 10k and they want you available 24/7 at times! It's worth registering with as many agencies as you can and see what they have to offer as well as looking on here and the local job websites.

Hi Marthabelle Can't say much about JVC, except that from a distance it still looks like a building site, although I have heard that there are some shops there and you get quite a lot for your money. We've been in JVT for almost a year now and really like it. All the properties are spacious and the villas have great gardens for dogs, we have 2 and 3 cats. A lot of the green areas are now nearly finished as are the tennis, basketball courts and children's play areas. Majority of the properties have been lived in for over a year now, so most of the snags have been ironed out. We've made plenty of friends here already, both young and old and with and without pets. There is a good community feel to the place and a lot of people get together for football, rugby, keep fit on a regular basis all for fun. As well as having night out. If you want to know any more just shout.

Yes all the villas in the Triangle are two bedroomed, although I believe some owner are starting to extend theirs. I can't speak for the Circle, but it always looks very disjointed to me. We have a good community spirit here in the Triangle and hopefully we'll have some shops nearby soon. Also now the new entrance onto the Al Khail Road is open, it's easy to get in and out. Nearly all of the parks, play areas and tennis courts etc are finished and being used regularly by residents.

My DH has a very low housing allowance, but a half decent salary, which in all honesty I feel is better. As most posters say there housing allowance isn't enough to they have to top it up. I'd rather have a larger chunk of actual pay in relation to end of service benefits and pay rises - if he ever gets one :) Due to the lifestyle we need, we brought our pets with us, it meant giving up the idea of any places with a pool as the properties and gardens were too small. As in all things compromises have to be made and ours is the lack of pool facilities etc. It doesn't really bother us as if/when we want to swim, we just have to pay for it. Comfort and enjoying our 'home' is more important to us.

I would also be interested if anyone can point me in the direction to get some gel to use overnight. I already have the moulds which I brought from the UK, so just need the gel to top mine up. My friend gets it online dentist.net and her teeth are soooo white! Thanks for this. Found something the same as I had before and less than I paid for it in the UK. Presumably I'll be able to SnS??

Seriously I've seen it! There was a house in one of those UK "home buying" programmes a couple of months ago where they had the same thing in one of the bedrooms. ETA: Also twin bathroom with toilets side by side with no wall in between. edited by Wednesday Genius on 21/02/2013 When I was a teenager (many moons ago) I can remember some clubs had two toilets in each cubicle. They reckoned it was because most females went to the toilet in pairs !!!!! It didn't do us any harm edited by Geordie expat on 21/02/2013

100 aed is a parking fine. It may not have happened at 6:30 am, that could be just the time when they uploaded the records to the system. I would not make a fuss for 100 aed to be honest. Plus my experience is that their system is (unfortunately for me) quite accurate. No, the fine does not go up, enough if you pay it at registration renewal. I wouldn't usually complain, but I've never been to Sharjah.

Thanks for your advice and information ladies. Just checked again tonight with DH's license number and the 'TC' number and there is no fine????? I'm now wondering if the plate has been cloned and that's why the fine only shows up on the plate number? If we wait until the car is due to be re-registered will the amount of the fine have gone up, if we actually have one? Confused :(

Geordie expat if you don't mind my asking where/ what did you get? I also have 22 years customer service and sales experience including credit control and solutions and accounting experience with a major uk high street bank. The comments on here are no surprise to me as the service and efficiency I experience here in dubai is shockingly bad across many industries. I just wonder where I should target rather than applying 100 times (hat off to you!) I got a job as an Admin Assistant. It was advertised on this site. To be honest I gave up targeting particular companies quite early on. Very few ever came back to me. I spent most of my time on recruitment agency websites, signing up to as many as I could. I also registered with every job hunting website that exists in the UAE. I picked out certain words from my CV and used them to search. Also remember to check on here at least once a day, both the forum and the jobs section. I applied for any job I felt I had some experience in, along with others which I just decided I would like to try, if given the opportunity as well as those I knew I was way over qualified and too old for! I must have more than 20 different copies of my CV along with numerous letters. All I can say is keep on trying and when you do get in front of an interviewer, don't ask for a fortune in salary. I just asked for what I felt I needed to help give us a half decent life and hopefully save a little.

Can I please add some good news to this thread. I HAVE GOT A JOB after over 100 applications and probably more than 20 interviews, it's happened. And it's thanks to Expat Woman too. Just to let all you others out there still looking for positions it can and does happen, eventually. Congrats Geordie. Thanks.

Thanks for all the advice you've given me. It just seems that 30 years experience counts for nothing! I don't feel as if I'm asking for too much as a salary, just enough to get me to work and back and some left over to spend. Also depending on where companies are based I can afford to take even less if it's near where DH works, as we could car share. As I said I've already got my visa and medical insurance. I'm already registered on as many websites and with as many agencies as I can find. Thanks for some different advice amourahdotcom. I will try a different way of looking at and using LinkedIn to do this. It was a start up company where I was told that the boss who would have been running the office wanted me for my skills and experience, to help her set things up and man the fort, especially as she would be out and about a lot. It was actually the owner who said no, as part of the role involved reception work!!

OK so I now know that my age is against me!!! I have plenty of experience, am prepared to try anything and I personally don't think I'm asking too much money wise. I have been told that at one of my last interviews - "I'm sorry, I did want to hire you, we would work well together, but the owner wants someone younger" Where do I go next ????? Scrap heap.

Planning to buy a car will consider Subaru this time.Which is the best SUV in Subaru. TNX We bought an XV last June. Can't fault it in any way. Great to drive, parking is so easy - fantastic turning circle and plenty of grunt when needed. Any other questions just ask, my DH can go on for hours about it !!

I've been here on DH sponsorship since last May. Applied for over 100 jobs, been interviewed around 20 times and still looking. Although I have been lucky enough to get some temp work. Some of the jobs I've been over-qualified for, some under-qualified and some I've just applied for 'cause I felt like it and thought I would enjoy the work! I wish I could feel confident enough to feel I would secure employment within a week !

fjcruiser We bought a Subaru XV from Al Khoory last June and absolutely love it. Mind we have had Subaru's in the UK too. They are great to deal with and the servicing is fantastic. Very reasonable costs, and they have always been able to fit us in when we want it, sometimes at very short notice. Can't praise them enough.

Geordie Expat I know I have it but I think it's under a mountain of other stuff in my storage cupboard. I'm planning on clearing it out next weekend so will keep an eye out for the book... Love her books. Also love Alison Weir's books; she's a noted historian and until recent years specialised in factual writing, so I like her novels knowing that she probably sticks more to truth than Gregory. Antonia Fraser is another fantastic historical author. I'm just watching Pillars of the Earth and will then watch World Without End which has just started in the UK. Fiction obviously but very good! That would be fantastic if you do find it. I also love Alison Weir and Antonia Fraser, but sometimes a little bit of fiction adds to the story, as long as it doesn't detract too much from the truth.

Can I please kind of hi-jack this thread and ask if anyone has a copy of Philippa Gregory's Meridon, the third and final book in the Wideacre trilogy. Yes I'll ask around but a friend told me to do it myself as we know someone else that did through DKC and they paid aed 7000 each cat - OMG ! I'm not paying for 3 cats just for someone else to do some paperwork. My friend shipped her cats to DOHA doing it all herself said it was very easy and only cost her about 600 using EK sky cargo. My vet said its also very easy he will just meet me at cargo village and stamp a certain certificate the animals need to travel just a few days before we fly, he also said it is really easy and no need to use a special shipping company I just need to check re the rabies certificate that's all. I'll call a couple of vets and see what they say about it all .... I also know a friend who took a dog to the UK and they did not need this rabies cert so surely it would be the same for cats and dogs ?! hope so anyway, will post here when I get more info - thanks again all :) Speak to DEFRA they'll give you the current up to date information on shipping animals back to the UK. And yes it is the same for dogs and cats. We were told that when we left the UK it would be fine when we wanted to bring them back as long as all their vaccinations were up to date.

Do NOT sedate any animal for a flight, please. As has been said it can cause any amount of problems. We used DKC to bring our pets over here from the UK as they were flying separately from us, and we have 5 - 2 dogs and 3 cats. Apparently you're only allowed to import 2 pets per person. As emlsnre said, go and ask DKC, I'm sure they will be more than happy to give advice, or you could try our vets - Blue Oasis in the Green Community, they are very helpful.

The law changed last January.... Vets here don't always keep upto date unfortunately..... http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/2011/06/30/new-rules-pet-passports/ I agree with this, but they also make money out of us by insisting on a yearly rabies vaccination when it isn't actually needed. Oh absolutely, one threw me into a panic, i had come out from UK with dogs, their passport rabies vaccine was valid and stamped for three years. The vet insisted I would not gain entry to UK without quarantine unless they had it yearly! So I emailes DEFRA and they kindly responded with the answer I already hoped they would. Sent it onto the vet for their info and they said that it must have changed recently...... LOL... Sounds pretty typical out here. I don't begrudge paying, but what I really don't like is subjecting all our pets to a vaccination they really don't need every year :(

Is your cat not vaccinated against rabies already? If he/she is then as far as I know all you have to do is prove that it's up to date. They need to be done every 12 months out here, although back in the UK it's every 2 years.

I wouldn't bother with the bedding, unless it's very light and king size. We brought ours and have put it in the loft. The quilt although our summer one is far to heavy as were the covers. Also the bed we brought here is bigger than the one at home so none of the sheets fit. Maybe bring your pillows, but you can get everything you need out here and it's not too expensive. Towels yes, why not. edited by Geordie expat on 19/01/2013

Hi Lou We have a 2 bed villa and there is no study, just the maids room downstairs. The landings are quite large though and if you look on the JVT facebook page some people have put up partition walls and made them into a small 3rd bedroom. There is no nursery within walking distance, the nearest one is at Springs towncentre. Takeaway delivery is fine - most of the time. The delivery lads are slowly finding their way around. Although there is currently a rumour that we will have street signs shortly. A supermarket has been promised for May this year, in the Limitless building, which is near the Al Khail road. The parks are slowly being finished, but there is a very good community feel to the place. There do seem to be a good number of people with children there. Unfortunately you would not be able to have a live out maid/nanny as there is no bus service. We do have bus stop signs mind, but when if ever we'll get buses I haven't a clue. We thoroughly enjoy living here as the space in the villas is great as are the gardens. Hope this helps

We are thinking of doing exactly the same, as all our family are back in the UK. After a load of work related stress we can't afford to go there and none of them can afford to come here. No offence to those of you with children, but we would love somewhere reasonably child free. Sorry :( Maybe we should have a 'couples with no children/Christmas lunch' thread !!!! (apologies in advance, just being michievious!) :) Please don't shoot me down in flames, but I seriously would love to go somewhere without kids. I honestly don't have a problem with families going out, but just for this once, would prefer not.

Ok go down umm suqueim road and take a right onto al khail road. Then its free flowing all the way, take the exit signposted for jumeirah and dubai mall and difc (sorry i cant remeber exactly what is on the signposts! ) but it is the exit just after the one for al safa. You go up and down again on a flyover as you pass over al khail. Keep straight past the turn off to dubai mall then take a right (you will have gone the length of dubai mall which is on your left), its a sliproad that leads you to difc so keep in the right hand lane. At the 2nd lights, by emirates towers, take a u turn and then take the next main right (not the immediate right which will take you to the gate village) past currency house, bear right and you will see visitors parking on your left. Hope that makes sense. If you have google maps, try to follow my instructions. Really its easy and very intuitive, though you sound like you are fairly new to dubai. Do you know where you are goign in difc? JulesLC. Sorry to hijack this thread, but DH has just started a new job in DIFC and he's been using SZR to get there, which takes about 25 mins. Can I ask you what time you travel down the Al Khail and what the traffic at the big roundabout is like in the mornings as every time I've gone down that way, it's taken me ages to get round it. He'll be coming from JVT. Thanks
