I know this has been asked numerous times, but any current advice would be helpful. We vacated our villa at the beginning of June. It took us a number of weeks to even get someone from the LLs agency to come and view it and we are now being told that we can't have our deposit back as the LL is out of the country and unavailable to sign a cheque. Any offers on where we can go next for this. Thanks ladies. When you say you have been told you cant have your deposit back, do you mean permanently or just until the LL is back in the Country? If the latter, when are they back? It really is so unacceptable! It annoys me. We are moving this Friday, and we wont see a penny of our deposit we gave, she tried to increase our rent by 14,000 AED so do we think we are getting 5,000 AED back? No chance! If you are being told that you will not be getting the deposit back ever, you need to file a case with the Rent Committee!

We used these guys http://promove.ae/ Yes we probably paid a little over the odds but it was the easiest move I've ever done. I would suggest calling them and not emailing though as they are very busy. Thanks Geordie Expat! Will add them to my list! :)

Hi, I know Im not Sarahlou but I have just ordered a parcel from ASOS using my Shop & Ship account, what a big big mistake! Obviously at the time I didnt know the weight of the parcel, and since found out yesterday it is 3.5kg and the shipping costs are 247 AED!! All because I wanted the parcel quickly I used my shop and ship... big big mistake! Depending on how much you are ordering from ASOS, I would not recommend S&S!

Looking for a charger that plugs into wall sockets??! Anyone know where I can get these here in Dubai? Everywhere seems to just sell the USB chargers... I have bought one from ebay but after about 3 uses it has broken so I do not hold much confidence in ordering another one from there! Thanks!

I think I am a bit late to the post, but it would be interesting to know what you chose to do Radley as you originally posted over 3 weeks ago?? I thought it was law for the doctors here to ring the police if an unmarried lady is pregnant? I have heard about it on the radio loads of times. I really would not go to the doctor here, personally, it is just far too risky. I would be on the first plane out of the UAE to get married quickly and then visit a doctor. A friend of mine fell pregnant about 2 years ago and she was engaged only at the time, she started to suffer complications and she flew back to the UK the same day, where she was told she had miscarried. She didn't dare go to the doctors here. Moral of the story, just get married quickly and when you are more settled have your proper wedding/blessing again!

Has anyone else had damages to their Shop & Ship packages recently? In the last two days I have received packages from my NY account and in both cases they have "slashed" open the box, its usually opened carefully. Where they have cut it isnt even where there is an opening its right through the cardboard with a box cutter, they have taped it up with the aramex tape as well and thats even dodgy. The box is the same I have been getting on a monthly basis and its like a pizza box to open, so its not like its hard to get into. I have never had an issue before and I have contacted them through their support line and thank goodness there was no damage to the stuff inside but it just ticks me off. Yeah I had the same happen to me - I ordered a baby gift for a baby shower from the UK, and they slashed open the box so unnecessarily and taped it up with aramex tape very loosely. It was so poorly done, anyone would have been to see the item inside what with the gaping holes they left!! So annoying! I am awaiting 4 shipments (2 from NY address and 2 from UK address) and 2 are really delicate bits of jewellery - I am dreading how they are going to arrive!!

In case anyone thinking about buying it. The new one is only valid April 2015 - Dec 2015. It will make sense for the new book that it can start the same date as the other ones, but I was a bit surprised! Thanks for the info, have been waiting for this for ages. Out of curiosity, was the book cheaper this year though? 350 dhs If you buy the app though it is only 295 AED. As soon as it had loaded I noticed it expired on Dec 31st so I contacted them about it to make sure it was right, so yeah they want to bring the book out in line with the other books (which makes sense) so they reduced the price of the app and the book...

Totally agree with most posters, her voice was so irritating first thing in the morning - and I am a Geordie too! Pleased she has left, although Catboy's voice is equally as irritating so I still don't listen to the station!

I designed my own and took pictures of a few rings that I wanted incorporated into my ring. I went to Cara and they did a fantastic job. Not only was it one of the most affordable in the Golden Diamond Park, but they will be honest with you and tell you what won't work etc... they had to talk me down to smaller diamond sizes as they said they would fall out of the setting I wanted etc... Would recommend them! They even did a free inscription for me

Geordie, it's because I have a sun spot which I've heard can be removed by laser, but on consultation was advised not to cos apparently laser can make it worse..... dunno, but I wouldn't want to do anything that could damage my skin cos beyond that I'm fairly happy with it..... I would definitely listen to the consultant who advised against the laser then. In this part of the world where everywhere wants your money, its good they have been this honest with you. Sorry I cant help further with peels and treatments - fortunately I haven't needed to use any of these... yet!

hey sarah, I hope you don't mind me asking you this, but you seem pretty knowledgeable about all things aesthetic and I was wondering if you would mind giving this board a heads up on what cosmetic procedures you reckon are worth it and which aren't. [b'>I'm asking this because I saw you write somewhere that lasers are a total waste of time[/b'>, I'd love to hear your thoughts on stuff like that..... haven't had anything done, but was thinking of maybe having a peel, got super sensitive skin and at the moment happy with how things are, but thinking of whether/what to do in future...... Depends what kind of laser you are referring to here Artemis - For hair removal or for resurfacing?!

Ah Sarah a guy I work with had that done to him about 6 month ago, someone from "Etisalat". When they asked for his bank details to put the payment in for him, he knew it was rubbish. You poor thing I bet you had that spent in your head haha!

I get a gel bio-sculpture overlay on my hands and feet, lasts about 3 weeks before starting to slightly peel at the sides. I do get them done every 3-4 weeks. It is true, it weakens your nail bed and if I did not get them re-done each time they would probably snap. But, the gel can actually keep your nails strong aswell at the same time. But, I think it is about finding a good nail therapist too, as I used to go to anybody within the same salon and my nails used to be a mess and split when they soaked the gel off, but I have found the best nail technician now and my nails are usually in pretty good shape when she soaks the gel off. I think the risk with your nails is less than the eyelash debate :)

The past 2 mornings "HSBC" have called me and told me that my car loan has a remaining balance of 195 AED and can I make the payment now. No security checks asked, alot of stuttering when I asked them how this can possibly be when I have a direct debit set up that has a set amount that comes out each month, alot of placing my call on hold while they "get my details up". I know that I didn't owe anything and that's what flagged this up as a hoax call. I called HSBC and gave them the telephone number I am being called off, they called the number and said they are 99% positive it is a scam but their fraud team are confirming the number is not a number of HSBC. Also confirmed I owe nothing to them... Beware of this happening to you! I just would love to know how these people get my name, telephone number and know that I have a car loan with HSBC. So worrying! edited by GeordieBird2014 on 06/04/2015

I'm doing laser at Health Avenue Polyclinic located at the beautiful Grosvenor House. Absolutely amazed at the price difference from other salons. I dont think its fair to name the salon that quoted me AED 17'000 (I can see people have already said they're getting good results from there), I'm sure they offer a professional service and probably do a brilliant job. But I don't have that kind of money to spare for hair removal for the same areas I'm paying a fraction of that price (shocking) and I'm seeing good results. Absolutely professional service at Health Avenue, my consultation was long, as I had many questions, very friendly staff and made me feel so comfortable. I am really ecstatic that they are offering promotions right now too, so absolutely bonus. Highly recommended. Do you mind me asking how much you are paying Diamante? Im curious just because, after my next 2 sessions at Silkor are used (pre-paid them) I am thinking of trying somewhere else as they are so expensive. I was so dubious to try the cheaper places thinking the lasers may not be of good quality or being burnt, but I suppose word of mouth is the best way of knowing they are good. Thanks!

I agree with most posters here, they are just not worth the expense or the 3 hours it takes to put them on. I am lucky to have long eyelashes but wanted something that made them look a bit thicker so I decided to have them done for a friend's wedding 2 years ago. They had a 50% off deal at the time, so that probably swayed me a little more too. I applied mascara to mine most days not every day, and removed it on a night gently but it never properly come off therefore I always felt like I had make up on which isn't a nice feeling... and also felt like I had constant dark shadows underneath my eyes too off the mascara I couldn't get off. Over the course of a couple of weeks I would wake up in the morning and they would be lying on my pillow - and some of them had my REAL eyelashes attached to them! So they do take your natural lashes out, and not only that they snapped some of mine too. Once I had them off, I noticed my lashes were considerably shorter in length and so thin and brittle. I used vaseline every night before bed on them to start strengthening them again! I definitely wouldn't have them done again!

I have been to so many spas in Dubai and usually I have left feeling that it really wasn't anything special enough to warrant the price paid. However, just last Friday I took myself off to the Talise Spa in the Zabeel Saray by myself while the hubby was at work and had the best facial I have ever had and it was the most peaceful and relaxing day ever. The grounds are amazing, not to mention the decor and surroundings being beautiful. I really felt like I was looked after. I used all of the facilities before my treatment (sauna/steam/snow room/swimming pool/jacuzzi) and was seated in a relaxation lounge with a cup of tea before my therapist came for me. Afterwards, she lead me back to the lounge offered more tea and told me I could use the facilities for the rest of the day if I wanted. I would definitely recommend Zabeel Saray! :)

Yep I have been using Pure Blue for about 3 years and definitely can tell the difference. My hair feels stronger and silkier and my colour lasts longer using it. The filters used to be only 100 AED, but about 6 month ago or so they have increased them to 150 AED and I have found that is the price everywhere so it must be Pure Blue them selves who have increased. Some salons sell them, and most pharmacies do too.

what are you working as... if i may ask... maybe someone on here would know of a more challenging position you could apply for My previous experiences are in customer service/office admin management and also PA. Thank you HorizonMum :) Going down the lines of Office Manager/PA will give you the most financial income as opposed to customer service...

Good morning Ladies, I need some advice please. I have been in Dubai over 2 years now and i am on my own. In the last year i haven't found it that easy, i am very unhappy at work and not in a great financial position either. I keep looking for a new job and not having any luck (over 1 year now). My question is, when do you say enough is enough? When shall you make that decision and return back to UK? I absolutely LOVE living here and i cant imagine to leave but on the other hand i feel that if i continue to be this unhappy at work and i don't find another job, am i just wasting my time trying and not achieve anything??? I would appreciate anyone can share their thoughts, opinions or if they have been through the same!!! Thank you so much :) Its a hard one, but only you will truly know when enough is enough. The fact that you are questioning that may mean your not quite ready to throw in the towel and leave Dubai just yet. Sounds like it is your job situation that you need to fix, are you registered with recruitment agencies? From personal experience, this is how you will get a job. Applying on Gulf Talent yourself got me nowhere even when I was qualified for the jobs, it made me think of if my application was even getting viewed or not... probably wasn't. Are you asking for feedback from all of the interviews you have been unsuccessful in? I know it is never nice to hear criticism, but sometimes we have to in order to better ourselves for future interviews. To make you feel better (hopefully), one interviewer that gave me feedback to the agency said that because at the end of the interview I asked if it was easy to get a taxi in the area, it showed lack of initiative... when in fact all I was doing was making polite conversation! What it showed me though was that I wouldn't want to work for a company like that anyway and instantly I felt better about not getting it. I think when you say are you wasting your time and not achieving anything is being a bit harsh on yourself. You wake up to lovely weather nearly every day, bright sunshine, and you can do alot of things that don't cost any/little money. You have achieved a better standard and quality of life for yourself. Seems like you just need to catch a break with your job situation... GeordieBird, You hit the nail on the head, off course am not ready to go. As i said previously, i love it here hence why i moved in the first place. Am not ready to throw it all in because i want to enjoy my time here, which unfortunately i haven't so far. God, i have tried every avenue there is in terms of finding a new job, i think its just my luck. I find Dubai works more in connections and i don't have a lot either. I agree i think the work has put me down in terms of confidence whether that is personally or professionally. Thank you for taking your time to send me your thoughts, much appreciated. Well, I have never got an interview here or been offered a job here by knowing anyone. It has always been by registering with agencies and keeping my Bayt/Gulf Talent/LinkedIn profiles constantly updated - as alot of recruitment agents will call you from seeing your profile on these sites. Make these profiles if you don't have one... Its really hard to be any more specific when I don't know what line of work you do... Contact agencies and ask why there are no jobs... get an update on the current market situation. Sounds like you need to get out there meeting people too, register on Meetups and go to a meetup event.

You can put it in all sorts, risottos not just curries etc! ;) Yeah I generally just stock up on beauty things as my moisturiser is 20pound more here than the UK! Thank you ladies. Unfortunately he is a completely absent Landlord. He lives in Florida and apparently has not been to Dubai for 3 years. The chances of a face to face are very unlikely - unless we take a holiday. I think we need to go to RERA. I was actually worried about doing this as I thought it would cause an eviction but now I see he has to have specific reasons to evict. I think he would think twice about that if he knows we have already dealt with RERA. Well, if he lives away that might very well strengthen your case, as he wont want his property left empty and him having to pay the mortgage at any point. Have you already paid for your rent upfront for the year?! If not, I would send him a stern email telling him if he does not reply to your emails and reimburse you, you will cancel a cheque at your end as he simply isn't fulfilling his side of the contract, so why should you. I would threaten him with saying you will happily cancel it and leave the property immediately as you are sick of being out of pocket... (you obviously wont cancel the cheque or leave but I would try calling his bluff). The last thing he will want is an empty property!

Is permanent hair reduction treatment just for ladies? You mean Laser Hair Removal? If so, alot of men do it. The lady who does mine often tells me some funny stories of the men she has on her chair! They get their full back and chest done - honestly I am wincing at the thought of the pain! I know quite a few guys who have had their back done OUCH I cant even imagine especially as I think my pain is quite brutal haha! But I have to take my hat off to them, I always moan about the stuff us women have to go through but I love the fact that they look after themselves too  I prefer rough and ready. None of this mani/pedi facial stuff for men  Hairy backs a no no haha Oh god the same... my husband wouldn't dare have a mani pedi... hairy backs though bye: Props to them!

Just a quick query as to what the landlord is obliged to do for us in way of house maintenance. On our contract it says anything over Dhs 1000 he will pay for but so far he hasn't reimbursed a penny. We had a back door that didn't work when we moved in. The lock had been broken and we had 3 people give us quotes - cheapest Dhs 1750. We paid this and were expecting a reimbursement through the letting agent as agreed. It never came then the lady we were dealing with left and no one else seemed to even be able to find a record of the landlord agreeing to this. We had to have a new water heater same scenario _ all agreed but no reimbursement. Now the toilet cistern has broken. It has been masticked up so much there is hardly any original porcelain and it really need replacing. This cistern is now obsolete so the new loo and cistern is quoted as being Dhs 1250. We have emailed the landlord direct last week and asked him if he will pay for this as we are still owed for the other bits from over a year ago. He hasn't replied. The agents are now saying they can't help as he hasn't left them any money to use for reimbursement. Seems like our hand are tied as we obviously need the toilet and we needed a working water heater and a back door that actually opens. Do we just pay for it and know we have lost out? Do we take all this with us when we go so the next tenants have to go through the same? Just makes me sad as we rent out 2 properties in the Uk and we pay for all maintenance without question - seems so unfair! Take a look at Article 16 -- https://www.dubailand.gov.ae/English/rules/realestatelegislation#/116 The thing is aswell, its actually illegal for the Landlords to put the clauses into the contract in the first instance, especially without agreeing the sum with the tenant, which they don't do, they just put the clause in and will not draw your attention to it. I have to say 1000aed is really high, ours is 500aed, which makes me angry enough knowing it shouldn't even be there in the first place. Same as us, we pay for everything no questions asked in our property in the UK, its not fair. I don't think you will get anything from the owner unfortunately, but one thing you could do is if you are going to renew, make sure you tell the agency you want to meet him face to face when signing and mention all of the stuff to him and give him receipts for it, have him sign to say he has received them and tell him your unhappy with it all. Even negotiate the price off the renewal and see what he says! He wont reply to your emails no way, not if it is asking for money!

The new landlord has to issue you a new eviction letter unless he has a Power of Attorney for the previous eviction letter. This is not likely if he hasn't mentioned it. The POA has to be attested by the courts and can only be for the property you are in. The eviction notice should be notarised and delivered to you by courier/registered post. Please call 800 4488 for clarification though, this is the rental dispute centre number. edited by Ladybirdsarethebest on 29/03/2015 Mine was notarized etc and they have an Aramex desk at the municiplity who arrange the delivery. They don't call to ask when is suitable to bring the letter to you they just knock at your door and if you aren't there they tape it to the door. I came home to find it and was alarmed as all my personal information was there for the world to see plus it says eviction notice on the top of the letter . No envelope etc. When I called the number they said that this is policy and how they do it :-( it was stamped by the courts etc That's awful! Well, they are liars as they called my husband to tell him they had a delivery off the court (we knew what it was) and they delivered to his work. Another example of them just doing whatever they want I guess

Just seeking some clarification about being served a vacating letter by a landlord. My tenancy contract is July 12th 2014-July to July 11th 2015. My landlord sold my apartment during my tenancy. He served me a vacating letter notifying me of the necessity of vacating my apartment atfter the end of twelve months from the date of receipt of the registered letter (9/9/2014). As there was going to be a new landlord I assumed this letter was part of the process and I signed it. My new landlord now wants to sell on too and is asking me to be out of the premises by the end of my contract (July 11th 2015). However, I am aware that legally I have up until 9/9/2015 as per the vacating letter. But my question is should the new landlord have served me a vacating letter in addition to the previous owner or does the old vacating remain valid? Any advice much appreciated. Thank you! Take a look at this... the Dubai Real Estate Legislation https://www.dubailand.gov.ae/English/rules/realestatelegislation#/0 --- Page 116, Article 28. This was the closest I could find to your situation for eviction cases. I think yours is a tricky one. Like another poster has said though, the new owner has to give you an eviction notice as well and they have not by the sound of it...?! I would go and speak to the Land Department but they are a complete nightmare and dont even know the law themselves! You speak to one person who tells you one thing, and the person next to them can tell you the opposite. Its no wonder no one ever knows where they stand when it comes to landlord/tenant issues! Good luck! Im also curious to know how it works out so let us know

I'm also going through laser hair removal at Silkor. Whilst I have had a couple of instances of poor service from them, I cant fault the results of the laser. I have had 2 sessions so far and the results already are brilliant. Also, depending on the area you are going to have laser on, there is a 2 for 1 voucher in the pink Body book for Silkor. I saved 1,800 alone using this. Id definitely recommend buying the book if you are to go with one of the clinics in there.

Yorkshire folk some of the friendliest? Yep, definitely accurate (unless you're from Leeds mwahaha! :P) Some of the comments on the article about Yorkshire folk: "load of **** - the Yorkshire people are the most miserable, unhelpful cantankerous people I have had to come into contact with!! - "I would fully agree, Yorkshire folk are so ****** miserable and tight. The countryside is lovely and it would be a great place if we could only get rid of the locals". Haha!!!

I can not believe there are still studies carried out like this... is it just me or is it a load of garbage?! There are friendly and unfriendly people everywhere all over - or does anyone have reason to believe there are certain areas of Britain worse than others?? If you are bored this Wednesday morning... take a read... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3010236/Unfriendly-Maybe-s-m-Londoner-Psychologists-identify-irritable-Cockneys-nice-Scots-anxious-Welsh.html?offset=0&max=100&reply=80857720&jumpTo=comment-80857720#comment-80857720 My city isn't on there. ;) Apparently South Tyneside is on the list of neurotic people haha! Apart from that my area isn't on apart from the comments section where men have commented saying that Geordies are the most stupidest people and the "easiest"... they have angered me more than the article! People watch too much Geordie Shore and stereotype us all ha! :)

I don't see why anyone should be so offended by it.They do it to everyone entering the supermarket so nobody gets singled out. If it's such a problem there are many other supermarkets in Dubai. I'm offended by the whole policy and have a right to be. They wont do it to everyone. Do you think if a local man or woman in national dress walked in and they refused to have their bags stapled and kicked up a right stink about it - the security would insist and refuse them entry?! Hmmmm doubt it!

It makes me so angry when they do this. Usually I just walk straight past them and then they make the scene of shouting you back, staple it, then I rip it open the second I turn away. If some people had a brain in this country they would be dangerous! How this prevents shoplifting is beyond me!

ATC54M, it's not possible to back date a sick note. I was off for 4 days a while back and when I went to see the doctor on the 3rd day he told me before I even had a chance to ask he could not do anything for the first 2 days, as he can't back date. He also told me the authorities are cracking down on the rules regarding sick notes as there has been a huge increase and that they are conducting investigations into certain medical practices for this. Interesting I thought - if the UK did this they wouldn't have so many problems! ;) Only other thing I could suggest for your situation would be to go back to the same doctor and ask them to write you a letter which explains you were completely bedridden during this time etc... And hope that works!

I have just signed up to S&S at the start of the year and used them 3 times already. 2 items arrived yesterday from Ebay, a box set of DVDs which was 62AED and another DVD for 15AED... S&S is affordable depending on the weight of your items. The things I bought are not available to buy in the UAE so it was even more of a win win for me! I recommend S&S so far...
