dear Ilovecandy, there is a strong link between having a bad day and being rude. If you have had some difficulties there is no way we give off the same good-mannered vibes as you would if you had had some great news. Also, what is rude to one is not rude to another. Two weeks back in Jordan a lady kept pushing her pram onto my abaya in the queue at Max (we were all queueing well by the way, Arab and non-Arab); by the third push I began to get a bit irritated but tried to remain patient; she was a smart lady and noticed and said, "well what can I do when your abaya is so long!!" and she said it in the loudest voice for all the (relatively ordered) queue to hear. Being on the shy side I was a bit mortified, but forced my mind into contemplating the differences between Emirati and Jordanian abayas, the latter being so much shorter than the former. Really the lady meant no harm, she didnt mean to wreck my abaya, nor did she mean to shame me in public bringing everyones attention to the inordinate length of my abaya; and it is all cultural. Jordanians talk their heart out and wear their abayas shorter. So we can say: she was rude; or we can say: she wasnt rude, she was just behaving in the way she has been culturally conditioned. I think she was rude! But that's just my opinion!

Along the lines of this topic - rudeness in driving. Am I imagining it or is it really really bad at the moment? Literally every day this past week there has been a major accident on Sheik Zayed Rd , Thursday there were two major ones with traffic banked up for miles and blood and glass all over the road Dubai bound and Jebel Ali direction. This weekend also there was another one and then today one by MOE Jebel Ali bound at school pick up time with traffic backed up a long way. They say that accidents have decreased but with the way the rude drives are and the number of accidents I have witnessed recently I don't believe it for a second. It's just getting worse. Omg I have to say I agree 100% with you! Me and my husband were discussing this last week - we think its getting worse too. Aside from the 3-5 accidents you see per day, we were saying there are at least 3-4 bursts of anger you have per day by some one cutting you off/nearly crashing into you! Its bad!! That too... is a "cultural" thing funny enough!

Thanks FairyDust - I should have really mentioned that my husband and her boyfriend will also be there! As I have found a lot of places now do only allow ladies to be there until a certain time... this was why I had to cross Barasti off - but yes a very good deal you get there! Thanks!

Hi, its been a while since I ventured out on a school night for ladies night but I have guests and want to take them somewhere nice as well as busy... any recommendations? Ideally, it would be even better to find a hotel that has more than one bar offering ladies night so we can bar hop... I'm struggling to find this though! Timeout has my head spinning! Thanks ladies :)

Some of the best steak I have had here would be at Hunters at the Westin, Seafire at Atlantis, CentreCut at the Ritz Carlton in DIFC and the Marco Pierre White Restuarant in the Conrad - highly recommend all of them! Infact Im off to MPW on Wednesday for my wedding anniversary - so definitely a special occasion place! Good luck! :)

We just had a beautiful ring made for our mother at GEMS Mart in gold and diamond park. It's the first shop on the left if you come in through the entrance across the carpark from Just kidding. He took a long time to help us design and choose the right stones. We went to several shops that day and he was the only one who didn't care if we wanted small or large stones. He treated us like we were spending hundreds of thousands when we weren't. Thank you will take a look in there! :)

I have used dazzle and cara. Don't use dazzle, my engagement ring was too large and they cut a chunk out (tried to keep the extra gold) and after awhile the line became visible until it could actually be pulled apart. Cara have been fine, the quoted price is always more than what you end up paying they seem to over estimate and then make it cheap. 'Under promise over achieve' I've had no issues but friends that got rings with very small diamonds in the bands had problems with them falling out. Monali is supposed to be quiet good but I haven't used them myself. Congrats & good luck! edited by mannikat on 22/07/2014 Thanks Mannikat! The guy at Cara told me for the design I wanted to expect possibly the diamonds to fall out - so already I was not impressed. The diamonds I am looking at are 0.22 for each one so not small really... Im thinking they would come out if I went to Cara! Is Monali in the Gold and Diamond Park? I will take a look thank you :)

Hi, Can anyone point me in the direction of a jewellers who create quality jewellery for a reasonable price? I went to Cara in the Gold and Diamond Park and really felt like they were ripping me off! Has anyone been to Cara and had a piece of jewellery made... what did you think of it? Also - has anyone visited the Gold Souk in Diera? Any recommendations for a jewellers there? Thanks! :) TBH I went to Cara and was not convinced either - sorry I don't have a recommendation though. PS if this is 'the' GB congratulations! :) If your referring to her off Dubai 92 - its not her! Sorry :) Plus she isnt even a 'proper' Geordie! I find her so irritatingly annoying... anyway back to rings and all things sparkly ha ;)

I think you have done a good thing posting on here and getting actual opinions rather than just researching online and reading Dubai is fabulous fabulous fabulous. I'm from the UK and moved here with my husband - we only got married to move here, literally 2 weeks before we moved. We had been together 9 years at the time so it was no big deal for us as we knew it would eventually happen - so this may be something to think about, have you been together long and discussed your future?! I would recommend being married, you never ever know what situation you will find yourself in in this country and the police will come down on you like a ton of bricks if they find out your unmarried. It is illegal. Also, what happens if you accidentally get pregnant or worse, run into difficulties? You will not be able to go to a hospital here as by law the hospital has to ring the police if you are not married. You hear about it on the radio quite a bit. My point is, the bad points far out way the good in not being married. Not to mention visa runs, paying for your own medical insurance amongst other things. Regarding the culture, fully agree with @Oopsiedaisy - it is very much a westernised city and you will get a shock to see girls dressed up in the shortest and tightest of dresses on nights out. Just like the UK. Jobs - your boyfriend may get a job here, although I am not convinced it will be as easy as other people have said just because there are alot of construction projects need started/finished. My husband is an Engineer and although he doesn't work in Construction, he tells me it can be hard as companies will employ Indian workers to carry out the jobs for a significantly smaller salary - around the region of 10,000 aed per month (if that). Your job experience, again, Filipinos and Indian nationalities do these jobs and are not paid a great deal of money. It will probably be a case of getting lucky with a company requesting an English national and they will pay you around 10-12,000aed. When I moved here in the January I never got a job until the November (luckily my husband was able to see us through) but it was the toughest part of my time being here so far. Everywhere was asking for UAE experience which how can you get if no one will give you a job! Its that catch 22 situation and really annoying! I have to say I find it really really frustrating as I do think people have this misconception of Dubai where they think... Ooh Dubai - tax free, hot climate, fabulous lifestyle... I am going to move there and make lots of money! It just isn't the case - I am [b'>NOT[/b'> saying you think that but people generally do. It can be hard here and my journey has by no means been easy. For instance, my friend from the UK has been asking me/my husband to find her brother a job here, a graduate engineer who has just left Uni with no full time experience - he thinks he is just going to come here and earn what my husband does who is 32 with 10+ years under his belt! People need to be realistic. I agree with @marytodd - if its just about the culture there are far more interesting places in the world. Have you looked at other places that will be more suited to your situation/career etc? I am not saying it is impossible - but you need to acknowledge it may not be as easy as you may have first thought. Good luck! :)

Dubai London Clinc Dental Centre (Al Wasl road close to Emirates Post) Dr Nora Powell 04 344 4359 - gum shields filled with bleaching gel every night for 2 weeks, then once every 6 months. Was very pleased with the result. Thanks! Im booked into the Dental Spa on Jumeirah Beach Road - they have an offer on instead of 1500aed it is 1000aed. For the home kit. I will give them a try as the offer is good. But does anyone know where I would buy the anti-sensitivity gel that you can apply before the bleaching gel to prevent sensitivity??

I used to get a woman in a burker knock on my front door holding a newborn baby asking for money... Surprise suprise he was ill too. This happened 2/3 times and each time I told her NO! It is a scam and I didn't even feel guilty about telling her to get away from my door. It was a nice thing you did but you were never getting it back. If you see her again I don't think you'd make the same mistake twice. :)

Does anyone know where I would take a broken necklace to have a new chain put on it? I have no clue! The necklace was not bought in Dubai... Thanks! Really??? What??! Yes... Really!!! I've briefly been to the Gold n Diamond Park once so hadn't even thought of them! I've looked all over in malls FYI. The fact you've took the time to comment "really" is quite sad! Go away!

I have just took a look at the website, the only thing is there are a few reviews there that say the gum shields are cheap and dont fit properly! I need results by August so not sure incase I have to send back! I think I am just going to have to go to somewhere in Dubai, but look at this option when I have no time constraint :)

Who has told him that? That's ridiculous! My husband sponsored me when we moved here and although we lived in a 2 bed, we know other people who had and still have one bed! Id tell him to look into this and get a second opinion, I cant imagine such a rule has been invented in the past 2 years??!

However I take your point about the heat and the interior plastic! I viewed one last weekend and I must say the inside was perfect. I will keep a look out for this though - its a good point :) I have a black interior and black leather seats! Not practical for the Summer but they keep my bum warm in the Winter :-) Do you have a beetle Sarahlou or just a car of similar size?? :) I know my husband did advise Id need to keep a towel in the car to sit on so that I could sit on the leather ha!

Hi Kaydee, it sounds like you had a bit of bad experience with your Beetle! As you say, its not the mechanical side it was issues that could happen to any car. Sorry about your experience with it! I know people with them who have them and they say they dont have any issues with it that may not occur with any other second hand car. However I take your point about the heat and the interior plastic! I viewed one last weekend and I must say the inside was perfect. I will keep a look out for this though - its a good point :)

Was this a mechanic in Dubai?? haha! :D We have a very good friend in the UK who has his own business and he says that they are as reliable as any other car of that kind. Ok, well if you don't have specific details I will take the word of our very experienced English car mechanic with his own business :) Thanks!

not sure this is the type of car i would be looking at to be driving in Dubai, I did think the same thing! Why? I know plenty of people who drive soft tops and have never had issues German cars are usually solid ( Body that is) cos its little and most cars in Dubai would drive over it! IzzyOnThe Seat - never heard something so stupid in all my life! Sounds like you are probably part of the "I will only drive a 4x4" crew! Says it all! Exactly Doubting Thomas well said! Pollydxb1 - please share the bad news specifically you have heard about the Beetle? It would actually be really quite handy to know this, rather than just hear you have heard bad things. Not sure what this could be if you drive a German car and say all is fine with it... my husband too drives a German car. Please share!

Vida Hotel Downtown! It was excellent! You pick up a picnic basket and put as much food in as you like, as well as bottles of wine! Unlimited bottles yes ;) There is a pool as well so the kids could go in there - depending on their age and needing supervised of course. Its 300 AED and 400 AED if you want to use the pool yourself. You can also order off a menu, its an excellent deal!

Hi Mseeff, I worked in real estate for 3 months and I left because I hated it! I had never done it before but finding a legal job was taking so long and I did it to try and broaden my network and learn about the areas of Dubai at the same time. It is hard. The competition is fierce because there a lot of companies giving commission only. It depends on the company he is also going to work for, I can say I know a lot of reputable RE companies compared to the one I worked for. All companies will set their own targets and figures so without knowing them I don't know if the ones hes been given are unrealistic or not - but my gut is that they will not be as realistic as they say. It depends on the area he will be given to look after aswell, as more expensive properties carry a bigger percentage. My colleagues made on average 12-15,000 a month - if that. This is a low salary for Dubai. You are expected to work all hours of the day up till late evening if required and on weekends. Your life is restricted. The turnover doing a RE job is huge and many leave their jobs all the time. I don't know anyone that will ever make a decent living doing this - as well as being able to enjoy Dubai and actually see their loved ones enough through the week/weekends. Also - it is coming up to Ramadan in just over 5-6 weeks and the market during this time is dire (I worked through a ramadan). I would assess other options if you have any. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news on this but this was my experience!

I have had numerous dresses made at a place in Satwa called Al-Aryam Tailor (opposite Satwa clinic). The owners name is Ishwar - 04 349 24 34 / 050 450 8558. He is a lovely man and a very good tailor! I have had loads of compliments on the things he has made for me in the past. Just take a good picture of what you want in with you. If for whatever reason they are busy or they don't have a dressmaker available at the moment, as they didn't one time I went, I tried the tailors next door to them, called Alwan. I had a floor length dress made for a wedding I was going to, and spent a fortune on the material, it was silk chiffon, and they did a brilliant job! I recommend both places. I wish I could send you a picture of the dress he made me it was stunning! Good luck! :)

@TanAmbassador: I know there have been a lot of replies to this so I wont repeat what so many have said... but have you thought of the other side to this? This girl clearly likes you and is trying to form a friendship with you, that I would take as flattery! Yes I acknowledge she may be eager and booking flights is a little on the odd side, but her heart is clearly in the right place and she wants to be a part of your big day. If you think more openly about it, perhaps your wedding could be the event where a good friendship will start to form and you can continue that once you arrive back to Dubai? You never know, you could have just made a friend for life... and you don't even know it yet! :) Good luck for your big day it sounds like it will be an amazing experience! :)
