It's not that bad, Pikachu! Hubby is in charge of the school run, both ways. we both work govt. hours, so knock off is at 3.30. I miss peak hour traffic both ways, and the drive is only 45 mins while only doing 100kpm.

I'm not really a nervous driver, just not extremely experienced. The only thing that worried me was having the girls with me, as they are very very distracting, esp in the mornings as they're grumpy. But it seems this issue is sorted out now, they've been found a place somewhere for next week in AD.

Gardens and IBM is a long way from JAFZA if you're doing a commute already from Abu Dhabi. Why is IBM a long way from JAFZA? I guess she means if I've already driven from AD (which assuming I'm in the city, is almost a 1.5 hour drive) it may seem that it's a hassle to go further

To be honest, I've done the abu dhabi to jebel ali run, and i find it alot easier than driving around dubai. Even a trip to the marina from my place in jlt is a bit scary!! I've driven to festival city a few times as well. To Mall of Emirates. I still feel this highway run is alot easier as it's straight forward, no navigation etc

Honestly Ginnee, while it's not the best drive in the world, I think it is also good for you to face this fear and conquer it and you're being thrown in at the deep end! There are a lot of nervous drivers out there and non drivers who rely on taxis but part of getting out of depression is to feel empowered and learning how to drive a difficult drive will do just that. I don't agree with avoiding things and driving is an essential life skill and one which you will need with children. So well done for doing it! Unfortuntately all the summer camps I've seen don't start til end June / early July so your best bet is a week of a maid service. Keep at it, don't give up the job and I hope the villa and maid situation is sorted soon. Thank you TBD. My husband just informed me he found me a nursery to take them for next week. In the meantime the maid thing is looking slightly promising. Will let you know if and when we get her back! Dont be too hard ladies on Anne, everyone is entitled to their opinion and maybe she just saw it from a different angle. Thanks all for your lovely support, as always.

I think you're getting the wrong end of the stick. My kids [i'>are[/i'> in school, but not now as until September they're on school holidays. I am the one that wanted this job and knowingly took it, despite the fact that we were moving to AD (the area we're moving to is only 45 mins drive away from my job doing a very safe 100kpm). It's nothing to do with hubby. Any fil I earn, according to his religion and his belief, is for me to spend on myself. Not my girls, not bills, not even essentials like underwear and toiletries, but just luxury or fun items for me to enjoy. This is why I want this job so bad. I'm willing to drive slowly and carefully in the far right lane and will get used to it quickly, no doubt. I cant take any any any time off as if I do, it will surely cost me my job. I've been stuck at home bored and suffering depression with 2 children for the last 4.5 years and this is my chance to get out of my darkness. And it's done the trick, my mood has improved substantially since I started working. We are sorting out the maid isse, inshallah it will be fine - will let you all know when I know. Everything will work out, but please don't blame my lovely hubby :)

Thanks ladies. no, the LL didnt turn up at his home yesterday. We're going to just move in there on weds and see out our 40,000AED worth of rent :/ As hubby is convinced that he cant get his money back, even though he has a receipt.

I understand. TBH my dd passes out on the morning car journey but then she is only 6 months. I cannot recommend anywhere in JAFZA I'm afraid so you will need an Abu Dhabi nursery. I am sure there are plenty of summer camps. Does your DH work in Abu Dhabi? Can you not have him drop them off in his way into work? Since you have a longer commute and most nurseries open at 7:30am? Where is his workplace? Let us know and you can work backwards from there. Thanks TBD, yes hubby will be happy to drop them of on his way to work, but actually finding a nursery or child minding centre or whatever, who will take children older than 4 is proving to be a challenge :/

Ginnee where do you work in Dubai? It is honestly easier to have the nursery closer to your workplace than home, I know this from experience. If you can say which area your workplace is in, I can recommend some nurseries with summer camps. Thanks TDB. I'm only reluctant to bring them here to dubai with me on the way to work because i'm an inexperienced driver - verrrry inexperienced. I've not started driving on my own yet, but will be by end of next week. To have two screaming an/or arguing and/or talkative toddlers in the back of the car is a dangerous distraction. I work in JAFZA abu dhabi

can you and your husband not take time of from work, as it's only a week ? read the other thread about huuggggge problem and you will get the jist of things yes, i'm aware of all that - why can't you take time off ? because I've only just started this job 2 weeks ago!! There is no way I can ask for time off especially as they were reluctant to hire me as I didn't have a maid. Well I now have a maid which is why they hired me, but ironically she's not here to help me!!

Sunday, Monday, Tues, Weds, Thurs from 7.30am-4pm. If anyone has suggestions or knows of someone good, please advise asap. Thanks alot. did you pay by cheque, can you stop the cheque? if so you would need to go to the police in order for that to happen, as cheques here once written are treated as cash, hence what happens if its bounces. cash :( ooooh never pay with cash hindsight is so 20/20!!! We wont make this mistake again in a hurry

Does the LL live in the divided villa? Can you go round that and wait for him? Do you know anything about him - workplace, where he lives etc? I would not let it go lightly to lose 40k. You must at least have his passport copy Ginnee, please tell us you got this at the very least. hubby knows all these details and at the moment he is incommunicado as he is on the ph and talking to lots of ppl trying to sort this mess out :( but yes, he allegedly lives next door, so hubby will be waiting outside for him when he comes home from work! taken an arabic speaker with you. that would be hubby :) yep you need to be able to communicate etc. I just hope we can catch him. my husband is a verrrrry good comminicator, no question about it :P

Hi Busybee! I just wanted to say that you are a wealth of knowledge about living in Abu Dhabi. If I ever need to move there, I will definitely be contacting you! Yes, she most certainly is! She is also absolutely correct about those areas that are not allowed to rent to expats. i can tell you all of the local housing areas as there are many in auh, a good clue is if its a big estate with all the same housing, then its illegal for an expat to rent there, there are rules if they are broken the landlord could have his house taken away from him, those houses were graciously given to them as low cost housing, some locals have to wait very long time in order to qualify for one of those housing, there is a shortage of those, but quite often they are given them and dont live in them, as they are too far out, they rent them out to expats and then rent in town for example, but its illegal. so look to see if they are all the same type of housing, and they are big estates, if you are in a villa for example in kca that has been split then you will know if the rent includes the electric/water etc or there is only 1 phone connection to the house as well. each house needs a meter/electric bill and to stay away from others as i have mentioned. Thanks BB - I didnt realise that this was land GIVEN to the locals. Not good, not good at all

Ok first sort out your maids visa, go to Satwa and organize to bring her back on a visit visa - it will cost about 1200Dhs for the visa and it can be done in 2 days - you will have to leave a security deposit, which will be returned when the visa is cancelled. Bring her back and you have 60 days to get her employment visa organized. Get her out of kish asap - its a really terrible place and those girls have to do awful things to survive if they have no money - also that way you can still work. thanks for this advice will tell hubby You have a huge lot on your plate, but as Ilovechoos says, get your maid out of Kish. That should be your first and foremost priority right now. Yes, we are working on that now. She's only been there since last night. So hopefully we can get her home tonight or tomorrow

Yes a PRO to figure out the maid mess while you see if you actually have a house to move into at all. yep but why a 40k deposit? You might find that he has conned a lot of people into big deposits and done a runner. If it's his villa, how many people has he given the keys to? And as to why Ginnee gave the deposit, perhaps out of desperation as villas are very hard to get in Abu Dhabi these days. All speculation of course, and hoping it all works out. no they are not, there are plenty around at the moment, there is one by me with a very nice landlord, but they are still quite expensive compared to dxb and have always been more expensive than dxb, its a "closed shop" here. BB, where is this villa you are talking about, and how much is it? we may have to find a new, legitimate one and try to sue the landlord, but hubby doesnt think we'll get far trying to sue an emirati :( in kcb dont know price but think it would be 150 edited by busybee2 on 03/06/2013 mmm, 150 way out of my league!! The villa we were going to rent was 60! well what area was that in, there is nowhere ever you can get a villa for 60 even in the olden days when the rents were cheaper you would still have to pay 120 for a villa and 140 for a compound villa. you were obviously renting a divided villa, or its in a local housing area, which are not allowed to be rented out to expats. which area, if it was al fahal, bahia, shahama, baniyas, wathba, samha etc etc then its illegal and yes you will find it very difficult to recoup any money yep, shahama. and yep-divided. I dont know how hubby got us into this pickle. grrrr

RE the anxiety, check with your dr and see if you can take a broad spectrum vitamin B - specifically Neubiron. Vitamin B is proven to help with anxiety. I'm on it and it has helped me - more than the anti depressants. I also take folic acid and fish oil, which are proven to help with depression. Ask your dr, cant hurt to try.

Tell your DH to call the Abu DHabi Rent Committee 800 2353 Go to the Electricity dept and let them know. call an agency that deals with Kish stuff and get money wired to your maid. and if you are on a Dubai visa, separate to your DH's then you can sponsor her edited by PowerPuffMom on 03/06/2013 hey that's an idea, I can sponsor her!! let me see what i can do PPM, do you mean my PRO? I'm not under my employers sponsorship, if I want them to sponsor me it will take weeks to do it, no? actually, its not going to work, as im under my husbands sponsorship, not my employers :( then you need to get a PRO onto this mess, and super fast.
