I suggest you put some throws over the leather, cats love leather, in fact they love anything that is not meant to be scratched! That is not what I want to hear lolacat!!! :D

I live in shahama (half way to abu dhabi) but work in jebel ali. I don't like driving much. Where can I buy an affordable scratching post? I just took on fostering two kittens, terrified they're going to ruin my leather lounges!!

It's like they just pull out, not looking, hoping whoever may be there will make evasive action. Grrrrrrrrr. This is why I want dash cams. And I certainly wouldn't disclose this to the other driver or the reporting police officer. I would lodge a complaint wiht the evidence the next day. Let them get a lesson. a big lesson especially if they sign official legal documents after making a dishonest statement about the event.

Oh how terrible. His brother will never happily celebrate his wedding anniversary :(. People here just don't seem to think of the ramifications. Someone told me that for the first half of last year, the count of road deaths was in the 700's!!!!! I'm from Australia and we're appalled if the year's tally goes over 20. something really has to be done. I agree the road toll here is appalling but there is no way it's 20 in Australia! I think you're right there, probably much higher (not lower, surely!). I'm a bit behind, not having lived there now for 5 years :D

Do you remember how much you paid rougly? A GoPro is a small digital camera that takes both video and still images. Lots of people use them for extreme sports and they are easily attached to things. That's what I need!!! are they expensive? The new ones the GoPro Hero 3 are about 1,500 - 2,000 dhs depending which kit you buy with it. You find it in sports shops mostly. I'm sure you can buy cheaper cameras as these have specific uses, such as sticking on surfboards, attaching to the helmets of skydivers etc. I have a fake go pro from Dragon mart. It records all trips and restarts each time, so if you need to check something then pull out the sd card and copy it onto PC. edited by BubblingCreek on 08/01/2014

I'm from Australia and we're appalled if the year's tally goes over 20. something really has to be done. that is awesome busybee2..i keep telling my DH that driving in AD will cause me to get high blood pressure someday.. it's really bad.. some people really need to learn to drive and be patient.. its really bad in dxb too! when i speak with people from dxb they always complain that the ad drivers are worse... when in fact its not they are all as bad as each other... a lot of drivers in auh drive dxb plated cars, this is because they have to because thats where there visas are from, and the same vice versa in dxb people moan about ad plated cars, when in fact they live and work in dxb but just drive cars with ad plates etc..... You're right, i guess it's bad everywhere.. i think it is because i am used to DXB and Sharjah since i lived there all my life. i moved to AD 3 years ago and still find it hard. the roads are different i guess. or thats what i think.. i just hope it gets better everywhere and people are not always in a rush to get to their place.. it really is different. a family friend just lost his life on weds because he was driving really fast and lost control of the car and hit a pole.. he flew off the car and died immediately his mother is in ICU and his 6 month old is in critical condition.. non were wearing the seat belt nor was the baby in a car seat.. these things should really be enforced but i don't see it happen.. i know a lot of people who don't put their babies in car seats and they dont wear belts and drive recklessly.. WHY?? Sorry to hear about your family friend - really sad :( I find it quite ironic when I find people driving with a big 'baby on board' sticker on the car and no car seat!! The other day a women pulled out in front of me from a side street, I had to slam the brakes on - yep, big "baby on board" sticker. It really was sad, his brothers wedding was the next day.. we were all supposed to go.. but they cancelled everything.. they just went to the honeymoon immediately and the his brother didn't want to but he did it for his bride.. really sad.. i know there is awareness and stuff about this.. but people are just so stubborn and want to dominate others.. and the car brand really plays a role here also which also gets on my nerves.

What's a Go-Pro? i have had many cars that are neary touching my back bumper and flashing me to move out of the way even though i am driving at the correct speed for the road, if i cannot move over safely i will not move over, it annoys me so many times that people get scared and just pull blindly into the other lanes and then affects those cars and cause more damage and accidents because of it..... sorry if there is nowhere to go you will just have to wait.... But then if the one behind you has no brain, and cannot comprehend this, the over take you on the inside, squeezing themselves in between your car and the barrier. Just a 1 cm movement would wipe us both out and other surrounding cars. Makes me so angry, hence my desire for dash cams!! Oh I've had people literally try to push me into the central reservation in their bid to undertake and barging their way between cars - terrifying. Remindsme, I must stick the GoPro on the dash.

Great to have this info A.R. Thanks. Singarosa, I got these contact details from the FF Abi Dhabi web page. There are times that I wish I had dash-cams, both front and back. I was told of a story where an expat was being followed so closely by a huge FWD with the lights flashing, he couldn't move as there were cars on his right, he was waiting till he had a space to move over. The guy behind him RAMMED into him!! When the police arrived, he spoke to them something in Arabic and the police ended up fining the more expat guy!! He probably told them the expat put on his brakes suddenly or something.. In a case like this I would sooooo love to have video proof of what actually happened. I'm really thinking of investing in these.

Actually FD has a very valid point. Muscle tension can create headaches and all other types of pain. Try to relax. See if you can get a massage. Go for a swim - if you have access to a heated pool. It's not easy living with family who don't understand and think you just need to 'pull your socks up'.

When I worked in a department store, I had a camera right over my shoulder monitoring my till and all transactions. And my bags were throoughly check each time I left the store. I don't see the problem in not putting 100% faith in a total stranger in charge of your most precious possession. But it would be nice to explain this in a nice way. Esp if she herself has children she would also want assurances if a stranger was looking after her kids.

I really respect the fact that you are a psychology major, but the fact is, there is a place for psychology, certainly. and there is a place for medical intervention, as sometimes these things are physiological. This injury could have cause some kind of chemical imbalance causing depression. (sleeping all day and zero motivation are two big indicators). There is no reason to fear that you will be on medication all your life. Most times, esp when it comes to post traumatic stress, it is just used to get you over a hump and you are able to stop using them at a point. Please don't dismiss them altogether. I have a friend who I encouraged to see Dr Amer (she was in a very bad situation), a very good psychiatrist, who put her on anti-depressants. She only stayed on them 6 weeks or so and stopped taking them, and has been fine ever since. I can put you in touch with her if you wish. I'd have to ask her permission of course. But please don't think there is a weakness needing medical intervention. It is no different to a diabetic needing insulin. With great respect, don't listen to negativity from your family. You are an adult, there is not even a need for them to know what medial treatments you are undergoing. You don't need negativity at this time. I know what I'm talking about , having a medical history or chronic depression most of my life.

I also didn't really like my Pajero at all, was much more of a gas guzzler, top range had nothing exceptional about it and taking it for a service was horrendous. I now have the Ford Explorer, absolutely love it, has lots of nice little features and the service package and quality of the service centre is better than anything I have seen anywhere. Ford Edge isn't really a 4x4 and is smaller than the Escape isn't it? Ford Edge is a lovely car and would have been my next choice, just decided on the Explorer for the extra space and actual 4x4 ability. I also have a ford explorer. Love it. solid, dependable, great service package, good suspension, can take a bashing. And I like the look of it. Plus it's a 7 seater, always a bonus

Chivalry is dead in Dubai. Just stand in front of an elevator. The men will push women with small babies aside to squeeze inside first. Just disgusting. Hope you recover quickly from your fall. I knowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!! And it doesn't just seem isolated to Dubai. I fell and broke my hand the day after arriving in Dubai with 3 month old twins. My husband (lebanese) didn't feel comfortable having surgery here, so we flew to Lebanon the next day. We had our luggage, all the baby stuff, two baby carriers with babies in them and me with the use of only one hand - the other in a cast, and I was really expecting people to try to help us or facilitate us, but everywhere we lined up, they saw our weakness and used it as an advantage to push in front of us. I was furious!! Eventually at the line up for the baggage xray (after having a dozen people push in front of us) I said in a big loud voice some thing to hubby like "gee people here are like animals, instead of helping someone who is obviously struggling and suffering, they take advantage and push and shove them to get in front" not thinking anyone would understand my english. suddenly people started beckoning us to the front of the line and helping us. Ooops!! they understood me. We had one helpful business man from Jordan on the flight back who helped us carry the babies through the terminal. So I guess it's just rare, not completely extinct!!

I've not suffered hair loss here in Dubai, but when I started taking natural supplements for a different purpose about 18 months ago, I noticed 6 months into it that I was getting new hair growth around the fringe and down near the nape of my neck. It is now about 10 cm long - which seems about 18 months worth of growth. I have new hair coming in too, shorter bits. So my hair is growing thicker. I don't know which of the supplements it is that's made the difference but I take Neurobio (Vit B complex), Calcium, Vitamin D, Omega 3, folic acid, Iron and Zinc. I shake like a rattle after swallowing them all!! But it seems to have thickened my hair. wish I could say the same for my nails, still as soft as ever and always peeling.

Oh my goodness, Di!! Yes, you are lucky it wasn't something more serious like a broken limb or neck!! I have found chivalry, especially in this region, is well and truly dead. And the women are just as bad. Humanity has really turned itself inward and people are now hesitant (that's if they're even aware of a situation!!) to lend a helping hand. Talk about insult to injury! Hope you feel better soon. Have you got arnica cream or tabs? I heard that helps with bruising. Thanks Ginnee, yes I was so lucky, I am using loads of arnica and ice packs and it is really helping the bruising a lot. xxx Somehow I knew you would be :)

I'm pretty certain I saw them in the cake-mix section at Geant Ibn Battuta. They have a cream mix in the box as well. Look on allrecipes.com for the cream recipe, it seems to be a mix of custard and whipped cream. I would imagine a box-mix cheesecake cream might do if you mixed some whipped cream into, but I'm just throwing ideas out there! I steer clear of the chocolate ones, TBH I much prefer the ones with toffee drizzled over them. so easy. Make a Croquembuche (not sure of spelling :D)

RuthM, I use to enjoy reading your posts which I found very helpful and smart. Nowadays, all I read from you is trivial complaints. Get a grip. It's the hormones, believe me, we all go nuts in the first months of pregnancy, thank God hubby was working here and I was home in Oz, else we may have divorced!! Yes, these things are trivial, when you consider that syrian children are literally freezing to death in snow covered tents in north Lebanon. But I do know that RuthM is a wonderful contributer here and everyone is entitled to an off day, especially when expecting!! Congrats Ruth and hope you have a lovely day despite all the Dubai-esque mishaps!!

There is a new range by Matrix called Fibrestrong (or something like that) In green packaging. I recently had a Keratin treatment at Violetta's Salon in JLT and she suggested this new line of shampoo, conditioner, masks. I use all three and have to say my hair is so soft. Dinks is right, for hair to stay strong you need protein. Years ago I used to use Redkin Cat, a protein treatment, but it may be discontinued or have a different name by now.

It's soooo sad. I've heard that Lebanon is reluctant to help them because they are afraid the same will happen as was the case with the Palestinian refugees, they'll build their own shanty towns. But what to do? Apparently Syria has so kindly offered assistance, but it's been turned down - ummm, hellooooo, as if they'd put the refugees at further risk by handing their care over to the Regime!!!

They are in tents and the tents are collapsing because of the weight of the snow on them. I wonder what organizations are helping, I'd like to donate money.
