Went to Kidzania yesterday - McDonalds open for take away and a curtained off area to eat next to Pizza Express - adults and children eating Pizza Express in Kidzania also opened but looked like they were only serving drinks and cakes

I travel to Malaysia frequently and have never been told to get Hep B, only Hep A and Typhoid. If you are staying in a nice hotel in KL you should be fine without, my mum has never bothered about vaccines for Malaysia and my DS has never any and he has been travelling there since he was 6 months (bad mummy):\:

Love Singapore too, lived there for 4 years. Sorry can't help with schools as I was single when I was there. Accommodation was more expensive than Dubai, I had a 2 bedroom apartment (condo) in a central location at it was equivalent of AED120,000 in 2000 - 2004. Cost of living was ok, cheaper than here (I think - there was just me to clothe and feed in Singapore). Loads of great places to travel to in the region

agree with Claire, Hilton was really good, don't know anything about Holiday in sorry. We were at the Hilton Arcadia 3 years ago. My DS was only 7 months when I was there, so too young for the kids club but I did go in with him to get out of the sun for a while - staff were lovely and they had baby/toddler type toys. I have been to Phuket many times and one trip to Patong each visit is enough for me, especially with LOs (just my opinion)

I stayed in the Hilton in November a couple of years ago with my mum and DS. The kids club was open and there was a playground outside, I think there was also a games room, pool table etc we didn't use it as DS was only 7 months. We booked an executive room and the service was excellent , kids are allowed in the lounge and it was open all day for snacks, sushi etc. sorry I have just reread the title - and you are asking about the Holiday Inn, Phuket not Holiday in Phuket edited by glasgo2010 on 10/03/2011:\: - sorry! edited by glasgo2010 on 10/03/2011

Thanks again for the feedback, I have tried to call the hotel twice to ask about child policy - but all I get is what ma'am? no ma'am I mean yes ma'am All the websites I have looked at state it is open all day for tea/coffee, soft drinks and afternoon tea which is good (standard in most lounges) - like the bit about the massages!!

TashaB, We used a workshop in Quasis last week (off Bagdad street) after DH reversed into a pole outside our compound. We didn't know to call the police so didn't have a pink slip - he managed to get quotes from a few different workshops there. Good prices (compared to UK) too.

shep, don't live in Fujairah but met a British expat while we were staying at the Hilton last month. She said that many families are members at the Hilton and they spend most weekends there in the gardens having picnics etc

Your husband's biggest problem is that he will probably be competing against a large pool of similarly qualified people from the subcontinent who are willing to work for much less than your husband may be willing to accept. I would have thought HCT would have been willing to hire you both (they do offer an engineering program in some colleges - don't know about RAK). Commuting to Dubai may become old really fast if traffic is an issue (but others may be able to comment on that better than I) - it's not bad in off peak hours but during peak times might become fairly stressful. That's a good point, if your husband would be willing to teach when you get on the ground HCT may hire your husband as well... Not sure about RAK but HCT Abu Dhabi used to help spouses to get a job in the other campus, e.g. one works in the WC and spouse in the MC. Definitely worth asking if they can get him something in the MC. You will be saving them money as they will only have to pay the house allowance once :)

I sponsor my husband and children and didn't have a problem, company paid everything. We have been in Dubai 7 months now and my DH has still not found work, luckily (financially) he can work from home for UK clients but he is really missing the daily interaction with other adults. I don't want to be negative but you really have to consider the prospect of DH not working, once our house was all set up DH got bored, quickly! I work within a HCT campus (not for HCT or their companies) and I believe couples with one child receive a 2 bedroom apartment but maybe that is just Dubai. Re Health Club, check whether the college has one, if so I would use this until you get settled - as SD says unless you have a pot of money behind you be careful with cash as set up fees can be high. Don't want to comment on working for the college as I am not one of their employees. I hope it all works out, :) As a visitor I really like the feel of RAK and loads of new houses being built

My office is within the grounds of a government college and regularly meet with expats in the marketing and publications industry. I have to warn ladies that they must cover their legs (at least to below the knee) and upper arms before coming to my office, they are shocked, don't believe me and often turned away at the gate!;)

So, hubby killed a scorpion in the garden last night. We are in Mirdif. Here I was thinking they all lived in Arabian ranches. Oh well. Im not to concerned although maybe I should be? Do scorpions nest? Can I get pest control to do anything? Where do I look for them? I googled but all the info is on Scorpions in Arizona, lol. Maybe Arab ones are different? Just a bit concerned there may be more and maybe I shouldnt be as chilled out about this as I am? It was white btw, if that makes a difference. edited by Purple on 01/02/2011 This made me laugh Purple. Perhaps the economic downturn hit the scorpion population and they all had to move out of Arabian Ranches to (whisper) Mirdif! LOL! I honestly ruled out AR before I came here after talk of snakes and scorpions on EW. Now they are coming to Mirdif :(

Tallybalt, I ordered every James Bond DVD (for DH) from Amazon UK to my work's PO Box. It came within 6 days, they deducted the VAT (which was more than the postage to Dubai) and I only had to pay AED2 customs duty. Not sure if I got lucky..it ended up costing about £5 less than if I had sent it to a UK address :)

Rhubarb, does it have to be a Phillipino lady? We have a lovely Sri Lankan lady (age 50) working for us. We are leaving Dubai in 2 months time and I would like to help her find a new job as she is trying to build a house back home. She has dogs in Sri Lankan and is a good housekeeper, just gets on with the job.

Lol I say Haitch and so does DS. I wouldn't have a problem with the accent as long as she is speaking proper English. I have some issues with my son's teacher's 'Americanisms' (Brit School). Sweets are now candy, biscuits are now cookies and holidays are vacations etc - it's funny now but I am going to have to knock it out of him before we go back to Scotland!

I stayed there in 2007 for an company meeting. Rooms were about 3 star standard a bit tired but clean restaurant was more cafeteria than hotel but I remember the lunch being ok. Overall it was fine, we stayed 4 nights and had all our meetings there. There is a bar there and the other residents were all very friendly The place is huge. One of my colleagues had a room at the opposite side of the restaurant and it took her about 20 minutes to walk to breakfast!

emailed copies are definitely enough. We sent our maid to Colombo instead of Kisch without checking with the Sri Lankan embassy - so she was stuck for an extra 2 days (extended hol) until we emailed everything over. This was in October so hopefully the rules haven't changed since then

Afraid so...you will have to pay them a visit. What you need is a 'Contract of Employment for Domestic Helpers' issued by the consulate and also you need to buy the insurance (I think it is repatriation insurance) - total cost including typing centre stuff was AED485. It was all done in about an hour HTH

Married. I never got married until my 30s. I had a great time being single but towards my late 20s I think I did start looking for a life partner. Sometimes I have a dream that I am single or with an ex boyfriend and when I wake up and realise that I am with DH and have 2 children I couldn't be happier :) Good luck Khatoon!

Stayed there last weekend. Pool is temperature controlled and it we had it to ourselves most of the morning. Beach has very dark sand which sticks to everything. Kids club is full of broken toys and dried out pens. DS played with the playstation for about 1/2 hour apart from that we didn't bother. They advertise a kids club schedule but it was never open unless you asked them to open it. The bouncy castle was up on the Friday but they did not bring out the popcorn, waffles etc for the children until we asked - the staff were too busy catering for company who were visiting for the day. Playground is fine for LOs but it could do with a good clean We had cockroaches in the bathroom however this may be normal for garden rooms. Second night was really noisy, lots of children running around until 4am! Doors slamming and parents shouting - although I guess this could happen in any hotel. My LOs managed to sleep through it but I was a grumpy mummy at 7am the next morning! Not sure we would go back, it just seemed a bit tired and for almost the same price (and Hilton Honours points) you can go to the Hilton RAK Resort

we have a big 3 bed townhouse, new, full kitchen with dishwasher etc, outside maids - AED115,000. You should be able to find something good for AED120,000. Everything we looked at under 100,000 was pretty old, dirty or directly under the flight path.

Just looking for an alternative to Hilton RAK Resort, we love it there but would like to find a few more places close by on the beach. edited by glasgo2010 on 17/01/2011

I usually stay in Hilton Orchard Road or Conrad which are fine for business trips I second the Scarlet it is worth the visit and it is in a traditional Singapore 'shophouse', haven't stayed there but lived around the corner from it and the area is great for walking around and safe at all hours of the night. Fairmont/Stamford are great for location/views and for the MRT. If you are looking for something a bit cheaper Merchant Court hotel is ideal and close to the Clarke Quay MRT station. Marina Sands looks amazing (haven't stayed there) Have a great time!!

Shaf, My 2 love it (3.5yrs and 15 months). It was only AED40 for the 4 of us to get in and we ended up staying 4 hours! We usualy go on a Thursday afternoon/evening and it is really quiet. There is a small soft play area which the LOs will love, my two dressed in clothes from around the world, played with bubbles/water, flight simulator - the hours will fly by. The manager of the planeteriam (sp) was really nice and replaced the scheduled show with one which was age appropriate for my LOs Enjoy!
