Another important thing to know is that only PayFort and Innovate Payments are authorized to make AED transactions. Paypal and the rest are not (even if they say they are/can). This is tied into the fact that the payment gateway business is an oligopoly. Paypal was working on it last time I checked, but there was a problem with it (I can't remember what). If selling in AED is not a problem for you and you have small turnover, then Paypal is probably easiest and cheapest.

I've been using Innovate for my site Garmin.AE. We've only been up & running about a month now, so still working out kinks but it's going well. They've been easy to work with & helpful. It is expensive to set up, [b'>but the fees are refundable[/b'>. Paypal is Very expensive! What e-commerce project are you working on? Can you explain what that means? OP I also believe that if your business is considered high risk for returns (ie clothing, electronic goods, etc), then you will most likely have to put up a higher deposit.

What ages are our children? Uptown has a good reputation for the early years but not so much for the middle school. I have known several parents who were not happy with Uptown for middle school in terms of promises made but not delivered. I don't think they are open for high school yet though may be wrong about that. Campus looks very nice though, much more open than the original campus. Hope that helps.

Why not do a modified schedule of 2 or 3 days a week? In the US many studies have been done to show preschool is a very important part of a child's early education. I think that doesn't take into account, though, proactive parents who are already doing things like "teaching" the alphabet, counting and colors in their daily activities. Depending on the type of parent you are, your work commitments, etc, then do what you think is best. That being said, my girls didn't go to school until they were 4.

If it's not serious then go with Duplays. I think they are at American School of Dubai in Al Barsha. If he wants something competitive there is an over 35 division (assuming that's his age group) in Dubai Amateur Football League.

This is how I would handle it. Go to the school and get an official WRITTEN response (on school letterhead and signed by the principal) from them about what measures have been taken to correct the issues at hand (ie formal reprimand, teacher evaluation by admin, etc). Then take that and the documentation from your end of the complaints and present it to the KHDA and ask them for assistance. I think it would help if several parents did this together since you claim that it's not only your son/you with issues. Good luck, I don't envy the position you are in. edited by GMKSME on 25/03/2014

Do you even need a license? If you plan on selling hand-made goods at the artisan fairs like Arte, I believe you are covered under their license. Same with Mom Souq.com and Mumzworld. Though I'm less sure about the latter 2. I think you only need a proper business license if you are selling directly to the consumer (like on your own website or even wholesale to stores here).

OMG this seems like a lot of work for her when she has a work visa and contract already , I hope it will get sorted in one day as she wants to fly immediately . If she doesn't get it done here can she get it done in Philippines before her return ? . Thank you ladies for your help It will be a big hassle for her to get the paperwork done to come back to Dubai even with an employment visa. This blog posts explains it pretty clearly. http://thirdculturefamily.com/2013/06/10/annual-vacation-for-maids-in-dubai/ I've been told it also costs more if you do it in the Philippines and by cost more they meant bribes at the airport. :( Hope your helper can get out to see her family as soon as possible.

Flip the cover inside out. Then take a safety pin (the kind w/ that have the plastic over them so they don't come loose easily) and pin the "bottom" corners of the duvet to the cover. Then flip it back out while holding the outside of cover where the cover and duvet are pinned. Give it a shake. And voila!

Online payment gateways are EXPENSIVE to set up. I think the deposit at Payfort is around 10k USD! That's a lot for mom and pop stores selling online. :( If you are selling clothes/toys, better to see if you can set up a storefront on Mom Souq or Mumzworld.

Dr Heather Eade at Mediclinic Dubai Mall is an Alternative Medicine Specialist/Naturopath. She's Canadian. I haven't been to see her personally, but have heard her talk regularly on Dubai Eye radio, she seems good. If I ever decide that I need to see a naturopath, it would be her! If she was the one on last week, I heard her too. I thought she was very interesting and gave a lot of insight. The thing that struck me the most was when she said something about how traditional medicine treats a disease, but complementary alternative medicine looks to treat the source of the problem.

How does Ripe compare to the Organic Supermarket price wise? Not sure about Ripe, but the farmer's markets I've been to here are a FRACTION of the cost of even the regular supermarket. You can't beat that. Organic (mostly local) and cheaper than even the imported, non-organic produce. @samz - Shocking but that place is just so cold to me, I think of organic markets and they're supposed to be inviting and friendly. That place is the complete opposite.

As for organic produce, much as I WANT to love it - I find the veggie boxes go off after 2 days. There is a reason they spray produce with various chemicals to make it last longer. even if I put stuff in the fridge it wilts so quickly and then I end up with a tonne of lanky veg I need to use pronto. I'd only do it if I had a dedicated cooking day to use it all up quickly and then freeze batches of stuff. But this is the point about organic food. We should be buying and cooking things FRESH. Before refrigeration we only bought what we could use that day or the next, that way we aren't wasting (like we do now). I know it's not ideal, or practical for that matter, but the fact that organic wilts or goes bad within a few days is a GOOD sign. It's chemical free!

I don't know how the Entertainer can justify charging the same for the app as the book, considering the saving on paper and printing the book. It does cost a lot of money to build an app so there are costs to make up. They are likely trying to recoup or justify the expenditure. Although The Entertainer is making money hand over fist in general! i disagree - we produce apps for clients every day and they don't have to cost a fortune, you'd be amazed! Well I also know and yes, apps do cost lots of money to produce. Simple games like flash-based ones for a single platform (ie Facebook) maybe not so, but an app like The Entertainer is likely to have cost 60k AED minimum but I wouldn't be surprised if it cost around 100k AED. Which, again, to The Entertainer's bottom line is a drop in the ocean but it is a lot of money in a general sense. There are so many functions that are included and it has to fit specs of all mobile devices.

Hmmm. I've never had it taste bitter. In fact, I find it tasteless and use it to "soak up" flavor from whatever dish I pair it with. I also think it lends texture. Here are some examples: - Add it to salad and it provides something to "chew" and it also soaks up flavor from the dressing - Use it as a rice substitute for dishes like grilled fish (again to soak up the flavor) - Meat substitute for example in a pasta sauce. It provides the "chew" that you miss out when you leave out mince meat Washing it is CRITICAL even if it says pre-washed, I still give it a rinse. I rinse it over and over until the dirt smell is virtually undetectable. Hope that helps.

Spinneys now sells 2 brands of Quinoa, both organic. One comes in a red bad (Eden) and another comes in a box (I forget the brand). The one that comes in a box comes in 2 varieties: red and white. I use the same method as Singarosa. Make sure in the washing stage to use cold water and rinse, rinse, rinse the smell away. Or else it smells like you're eating dirt. I also add a pinch of salt to the water. Singarosa, I didn't know C4 sold quinoa. Do you know the brand? I normally go to the Mirdif or MOE C4 and have never seen it. Do you mean the couscous in the open market type of area where they sell spices, nuts and the like?

I just called the DRFA and they say they are entitled to 1 month and 1 flight back home. She is arguing that her friends, swearing on the skies above, received a gratuity and she is showing me a portion of a 7 days article that states UAE labour laws passed to pay gratuity to maids...I can't find the article, but found an old one from the National from 2012 stating similar headlines, but saying the laws are approved but "not enforced " yet. Anyway, it's a shame I have to spend last day with her researching laws about this when I am already giving her above and beyond what she is entitled to and I have always been so generous to her with one paid flight every year when she is not even entitled to it.... Oreo, you should explain to her the nuance of laws being passed in the UAE. Even once they are approved or finalized or signed, it doesn't mean they take effect. [b'>New laws and bylaws take effect only after they have been published in the Official Gazette. [/b'> I'm sure it's frustrating for her to understand this, and I do think it's unfair for domestic helpers to be excluded from the labor laws, but that is how it works here. :( Do what you think is fair after her years of hard work and loyal service to your family.

This reminds me of that episode of Master Chef Australia when the Dalai Lama went on as a guest judge. Short story is that one of the contestants really stuffed up her dish and served him what was basically a slop of food. The Dalai Lama graciously took a bite and later told all the contestants that according to his beliefs he can't pick this over that. Instead he accepts everything and appreciates the effort regardless of the outcome. I think sometimes we forget to appreciate small gestures of kindness because it's not what we personally would do. Maybe it took a lot of effort on her part to give you these clothes, whatever their condition. It's not so hard to just be grateful. Is it?

Its not as bad as those who let their children sit in shopping trolleys (as in the bit you put your groceries not the proper place). The though of outdoor shoes where you put food turns my stomach. edited by IzzyOnTheSeat on 02/03/2014 You don't eat off the trolleys do you? The place you put your hand to steer the trolley is far dirtier than the inside of the trolley. I think it's far more gross when people don't put raw meat/fish in bags and just put the plastic wrapped tray dripping with raw juices in carts and on the check out counter.

Be careful you aren't using construction sand or other sands that aren't meant for "play." There are small particles in construction sand (and other sands not meant for children) that can be irritating to the airways of a child. There was some talk about it a while back in the US that the particles may be carcinogenic. I can try to find the articles but I'm sure you can find the same on your own via google. edited by GMKSME on 27/02/2014

I'm not sure of this particular recipe but I think we make something similar. Here are some tips to try: 1. Strain the yoghurt as much as possible. Greek yoghurt is great for making sauces because there is very little water content to start. It's almost like cheese. 2. Dissolve the corn starch in water THEN add to the yoghurt. Do not mix in a blender. I think the combination of too much water in the yoghurt plus blending it is the mistake. Hope that helps!

I would be careful about soft plastic styles of latches. They are easily stretchable and a determined toddler/young child can force through them (or open just enough to get their arm/finger caught in the door). I would stick to a hard plastic one that doesn't have any "give" and doesn't need to be stretched to "lock" it but instead "clicks" into place. If that makes sense.

I think "landlord" is the same as owner isn't it? It's probably that way because the bulk of their business is rentals and the owner of a rental is the landlord. That's the way I read it anyways. There are a couple of other sites that people list properties on for sale and rent. I've mentioned in the past http://paynocommission.com where you rent/sell directly without an agent, thus there is no commission paid out to an estate agent. There are also a couple of sites that aggregate listings from all the major real estate portals and publish them on their site. That is convenient because you don't have to go to all the different sites, they are listed together on one. I forget the name of that one, I'll look around and see if I bookmarked it though.

Are there any schools that post samples or practice tests of their entrance exams? In the past 2 countries I've lived in the majority of the private schools had these for prospective students to practice before they took the actual entrance exam. Any schools here in Dubai offer the same thing on their websites? I looked at several and couldn't find any. I'm looking specifically at the middle school grade level. Thanks in advance.

If that's the main reason there's a site you can try called paynocommission.com. I haven't used it myself but came across it when I was looking up something to do with lease contracts.

Maybe schools can't dictate to parents what to send in the school lunch but they can decide to offer only healthy options in the school canteen and on school trips. There is no excuse for soda, cakes, deserts, etc to be sold at school on a regular basis. Maybe on the odd occassion for a bake sale fundraiser or International day or something similar. However I know several schools that sell donuts, waffles, cereal bars and the like on a daily occassion.

Having kids at different schools is a nightmare in my opinion. All the schools end/start at about the same time and the travel distance is not usually doable. That said I would be fine sending my 12 year old on the bus as long as the pick up time wasn't too early. Depending on where you live the commute can be more than an hour (because of all the stops in between). If I were you, personally I would homeschool them and apply for a place starting in September. K12 is an option, probably the best one since they are in the KHDA system. The curriculum is very comprehensive as well. But to be honest, with 3 kids I would hate doing it (though I would suck it up since it's only 3 months). Try DESC out in Academic City or GEMS Wellington Silicon Oasis. Then you can live in Silicon Oasis where the rent isn't that bad and the commute won't be either. It's also very accessible to a lot of after school activities like sports, dance, etc. Hope this helps, though I know I'm a bit all of the place.

Colours have you tried [b'>some of the new schools that are opening[/b'>? I have seen ads for the new Safa school near Miracle Garden and Nord Anglia school and I think Gems Al Khail may still have places. Best check the new schools where you may have better luck with availability and at the same time keep pursuing whichever other school you had in mind as I suppose it is always possible they may have spots come up if other families that have received offers don't end up taking them. However in such a case it will depend how far up the waiting list you are and whether they will reach you so it may be a big risk to take if you don't have alternatives. The problem w. these new schools is that there are TONS of teething issues. There is not one new school that doesn't go through them even if it's an established education group (ie GEMS) that are running it. It can be frustrating and a huge loss of time and money putting your child in a situation like that. Of course depends on the age, younger children not so much of a problem but for older children they can lose a lot of ground if a school isn't really prepared.

I'm totally with you on this one FairyDust. I have to disagree firmly with The Dangerous Blonde regarding the role of flight attendants. Their primary role is safety-focused and to belittle them based on what you think of their role is offensive. And to throw a spanner into it, although it was probably annoying to have a strainger make a comment about their child drinking soda, it's utterly and completely true isn't it? LOL

Great question. I'll be following this thread closely. My mother is coming in a couple of months and I thought with the new health insurance laws in Dubai that even visitors needed to get minimum coverage? And that the government was going to push this along by working with insurance companies to offer plans for this reason.

Was going to make a ginger and turmeric "tea" to see if it would help with my arthritis as apparently it's really good and i don't want to take the imuno-suppressants....
