Jewel Twin Towers in Dubai Marina-- does anyone know anything about it? 1.hows the community? 2. how are the bathrooms and kitchens? 3. problems? 4. positives? 5. any idea of the rents? I can't find much on dubizzle--lots of things with no pictures or proper descriptions.

gold in glitter, tks , i have enforced most of your points and love the one about send me the photo of where you are and the group you are with, that is brilliant,, can you tell me what the wristlet is? No 12, about not doing anything that would embarass them later if it were posted on fb or internet is a very good point.. tks ps what ages are your sisters, if you dont mind me asking and are you going to relocate to dubai? :) a wristlet is a wallet/purse that they have to wear on their wrist, it comes with a strap. if one of them says they lost their wallet/lost a cell phone then i'm not very lenient. My sisters are 17 going on 18. (I'm 26) so I don't get taken seriously unless I rule with an iron fist. One of them will stay here in London (she's in University) and the other will be coming to Dubai with me before she enrolls in University in Dubai.

OMG! I have no words. Maid almost flooded the house again???? I came out of my room to hear water in her bathroom. She was merrily washing her lunch dishes in the kitchen. Amazing! DH is booking her ticket for tomorrow morning now. At this rate she might just drown us all! I don't know whether I should be laughing or crying at this stage. again?! seriously? okay, so i guess your going to ban. so she did it on purpose? I really don't know what to make of the whole thing. Is she doing it on purpose or is she just plain stupid? I really don't know what to say at this stage. I'm an unforgiving person. If one of my sisters/relatives/guests/nanny made this mistake once, I would assume she was doing it to 'test the waters' with me, but I would let it go the first time. The second time something like this happens, we'll need to take the fight outside.

ladies, i am very interested to know what other mums in dubai allow thier daughters to do.. i know all kids mature differently but we are talking about year 9s.. what curfew do you have for them do you allow them to take taxis every "gathering" seems to have more than just coca cola these days and it is a worry.. do you allow them take buses? do they go to the malls alone? if they are visiting a friends, do you speak to the parents . i would like to hear opinions as to what you think is acceptable debs hh I'm raising my two teenage sisters currently. It's hard work! Okay, so we're not in Dubai yet but, I feel like I had to set the ground rules: 1. Absolutely not being out past 10:00pm alone. 2. Absolutely no dating unless I've met the boy first. 3. I need to be texted the word 'safe' every two hours after 8pm. I won't judge, but I must know his face and have his contact details. 4. I need to be told of plans ahead of time+the addresses of the locations they will be and around what times they will arrive and leave. 5. Although, I can't give my sisters curfews (I'm not their mother-blah,blah,blah) I can expect them home by 2am but only if they've cleared it with me ahead of time. 6. Before they leave my home, all their cars must be booked in front of me. I never trust their friends driving them anywhere, and I don't trust them driving around either. I also request a copy of the confirmation number of the taxi/car service. 7. Not allowed to take purses with them, just wristlets that they must keep on their person at all times. And if I need to do a spot check text, it must be responded to. 8. Phone must be on all times, or else I take the phone away all together. (when they get back) 9. I must know at least one other persons phone number (someone else in the group that is going to be out). 10. I want a picture of the group once everyone has arrived (wherever they are going) 11. Whenever I text and request a certain picture --show me that you are really with so and so etc. or show me you are still where you said you are (our blackberries give time stamps) 12. Not allowed to do anything she would be ashamed of posting on the internet.

I would say email for a pic if you like but there appears to be something going on weird with yahoo. a friend just sent me a message and it opened a link to my personal banking! and sophia 07 can't send mail through... maybe try another day if interested, or a bit later. sounds good. i would love to have a look. GGP, IIRC, your other half may be commuting to Abu Dhabi? In which case (I'm not the world's best at geography, particularly not in Dubai), I think Jumeirah Islands would make the commute easier than it is from The Villa? Just a thought. My husband finds the commute from the villa or the ranches easier than from the meadows to Abu dhabi... There is zero traffic getting out to emirates rd u can travel right along the back way past green community etc to get there.... There's always traffic leaving from the meadows springs areas .... It's takes 15 min to mirdiff city centre and dubAi mall.. The houses are big I have a five bed with five bathrooms and own pool for 195 k.. And I have my own courtyard and fountAin in the middle of my house :) that sounds beautiful!

You really need to come over and have a look around. I have to say I have never seen a nice bathroom or kitchen in any of the houses mentioned. Most places have cheap bathrooms like the type you get in council houses in the UK all plastic and horrible. It does sound like you will have to compromise on the bathroom/kitchen front if you go for a villa. An apartment might be a better option if you dont mind not having a garden. i was there the week before last and saw some rank places. The building quality of villas is absolutely shocking, even on the Palm the houses are simply awful considering what you pay for them I don’t know what your budget is but you could try Emirate Hills or Hattan they are more up market than the other places mentioned. So our initial budget was pretty decent 350k aed and they pay all utilities (unlimited) although we think since they give us the cash in hand that we should only spend 250k and pocket the rest. In all my searches, I have never ever come across anything in Emirates Hills for 350k or below. I just want a nice bathroom. I'm under the impression Emaar makes better build? I don't mind a high spec flat with at least 3 bedrooms.

What is there to be concerned about moving to a lovely place with lots of nice people - sounds like a very good plan to me! my concern is, i'll want to live there but then have to choose an extra 2 hours of dh vs a great neighborhood. (I don't think he'd be pleased to know I'm willing to sacrifice our time together.) Is he planning to commute to AD? AR is not a bad location for commuting to AD - you can go out the back road which is a good clear road rather than do the Emirates Road bash down to SZR - it most certainly won't add in 2 extra hours - maybe you're baseing that on when the old roundabout was there - I too would never go to AR then but that was a couple of years ago - now it's plain sailing. If you want a villa and your dh is commuting to AD I would go for Jum Islands Meadows/Springs The Lakes Green Community Green Community Motor City AR Victory Heights ...Dh wants a villa, i'm not too fussed. what do you think about the marina?

GGP, you'll have to ask people with longer Dubai experience than mine about that. From what I've read here, if you remodel a garden, some landlords expect you to leave it in the state it was in when you moved in, even if you've improved it - I don't know if that would apply to the interior, as well? I should think it's something to be discussed with the landlord before signing a contract, and getting it absolutely clear so you don't land up in deep dooh-dah when you move out. yeah, i wouldn't ever re-model someones house unless i knew from the start that it was ok. i just don't want to have to make compromises about bathrooms. i really want a lovely one. and a night bright white kitchen. i hate the super dark ones-- soo negative feeling.

GGP, sorry, no, apart from going past them nearly every day, but I've never been inside JI. As you'll have gathered, I'm a fan of the Meadows, but I don't think you're going to get your dream bathroom there! I believe our landlord owns quite a few houses in Meadows 9 and possibly other Meadows, if you want, I'll try and find his details and get back to you. my husband is a big fan of the meadows. do you think if i wanted one of those meadows places i could re do the bathroom to my own specs? and maybe re do the kitchen? we plan on being in dubai for a good long while. (till we can afford to buy a nice house in London)

There are some clusters on JI that are not great but we lived on a good cluster (and there are many of those!) we were not right on the water either so were not bothered by some of the mozzie and smelly stagnant water issues either. It was lovely when we lived there - I visited back a few weeks ago and it was looking a bit tired. I can't believe that the roads around springs and meadows and JI are still 2 years down the line still such a mess...... Emirates Rd I think is a safer road than SZR - I now hardly ever have to drive on SZR and feel far safer on Emirates Road and Al Khail Road. It also helps that the huge amount of construction lorries are so much less these days so the roads are not bunged up with cement mixing lorries. We are not on Arabian Ranches and I far far prefer to JI - but that's my personal feeling. GGP you will have to come over and spend time driving around and getting a feel for where you like and take a look at lots of villas - you will know when you have found where you want to be. Happy hunting. You see, thats my biggest concern. No one has anything bad to say about Arabian Ranches and I'm sure the feel of the area is just really happy.

JUmeriah islands personally i dont like them..the lakes arond there are nasty ..... The Villa is a brand new community better bathrooms than jumeriah islands and arabian ranches. We have a double vanity and rain shower and nice tub....and all brand new. 10 min from the ranches. okay, but isn't that on Emirates Road? Is that road really as dangerous as I hear?

GGP sounds to me like you need to look at Jumeirah Islands - 4 and 5 bed villas in new dubai area - just off sheik Zayed road, across from the marina and close to both Ibn Battuta and Mall of the Emirates. They have walk in showers and large bath tubs. Some layouts have just showers in the en suites and others have full bath tubs. All have private pool. Hey Clairehdp! I was thinking about the JI's but I heard it's not so great? Can you tell me what it's like?

What is it with this place and the obsession with bathtubs instead of showers? We have a 3 bed apartment and all three rooms have tubs. Very silly indeed. my son is afraid of the shower...sometimes i think my mil is too. i was hoping for bathrooms with bath tubs separate from really lovely waterfall shower alcoves. you know, the kind of bathrooms from my fantasies? I so wish for a modern walk in rain shower. you and me both. i've had to make soo many compromises while living in London. I hope I won't have to make many more when I move the Dubai.

Yes for sure! Burj Residences are some of the best appointed and also Park Place, stunning bathrooms, and World Trade Centre Residences too. which are better? the burj residences/park place/ or world trade center? (i think i may have stayed at the world trade center residences in 2008--not sure though, they are serviced apartments?) o They are both serviced and longer lease rentals / unfurnished. Personally I love Park Place BUT they have no balconies which for me would be a real negative - I love my outdoor space. I fear you also need a unit larger than what is available (from memory I think 3 beds is the biggest). Sorry you are not finding this home search simple! I was hoping they would be furnished so i wouldn't have to furnish it. i don't mind 3 beds, i'll just make everyone bunk up.

We are moving into Miradoor in a type 15 and I think it has a decent bathroom. It has a seperate tub, double vanity, and large tile shower (the little small square tiles like subway tile, not the big tiles you see on the floor) with glass doors. It's a good size and the nice thing about the type 15 is it has an awesome kitchen too! We are going to be in the low 200's so not a bad price. do you have waterfall shower? and are all the bathrooms like this? whats your kitchen like? (is it light and airy? or dark and heavy?) whatever, your places sounds lovely.

I get them here in London and when I lived in Texas I usually had to go to NY or if I knew an auntie who would pick it up for me, but if it's all in Dubai, then I don't mind. We're regretting not having had DEWA as part of the housing package, particularly since the recent price rises, our bills are quite high at the mo, dread to think what they'll be in the summer. And bear in mind that the "housing fee" comes off your DEWA bill as well - you could at least try to get that as part of your housing package. very interesting. i'll try to manage that now.

GGP I don't think the ketchup tastes the same in UAE or Russia for that matter as it does in the states. I heard once that it's b/c they use different sugar. Beet sugar in Europe vs sugar cane in the US. So perhaps they use different sugar in the hot sauce and that changes the taste just slightly? yeah, ever since i moved to London -- i make my own ketchup :( i hate having to though. i also have to make my own tartar sauce. i'm such a big sauce person!

As for Shirley Jackson, The Lottery is probably only one or two of her books I haven't read - the ones I have are just "creepy" (as in scary or double entendres for who is evil and who is not). As for censorship, it may be easier here in terms of access to actual books. At home, once I graduated to the adult section at the library, my parents didn't censor (about 10 or 12 years old). But a LOT of stuff is available online - how do you control that? Especially outside the home. edited by marycatherine on 26/01/2011 yeah, so i read this a while back. still scares me. i totally would have moved from that town.

When you move to Dubai, you'l find that most Pakistani goods are easily and cheaply available :) However, if you still want to visit Pakistan - it is probably better for women to go in groups. And if all the people in your group are non-urdu speaking, it's recommended to have a local "guide". The two cities where you'd do the best shopping would be Karachi (1.5 hours flight time from Dubai) or Lahore (3.5 hours flight time). If you add the flight duration plus time spent at the airport and for shopping, I think it'd be too hard to manage all of it in one day. i speak hindi. i want to go in a pakistani group. i want some GOOD shopping.

Okay, I'll tell you from my experience. My mother was a doctor for the military (we're from Texas). I got married and moved to London--- then I had to start using their medical facilities. YUCK! YUCK! YUCK! The NHS hospitals (and even the private hospitals) are a horror. I had to have my son privately here in London after the NHS lost my records around 7 times during my pregnancy. During the pregnancy, I started bleeding (at 16 weeks) and they told me I had miscarried. I demanded an ultra sound and on the screen was my happy little bubbly baby--heart still beating. They never figured out why I was bleeding and even sent me home (still bleeding). I ended up delivering at 37 weeks (c-section) AND I had pre-eclampsia! Waiting that long and not figuring out I had such a serious condition was past irresponsible. It was absolutely third world. If I hadn't demanded a c-section the morning I did no one would have realized I had pre-eclampsia. London is not a great place for medicine. Not even Harley Street is that great. The medical practices are out of date. If my mother hadn't been a doctor I wouldn't know to go and call up her friends and ask them for advice regarding the next steps. My son is currently speech delayed, I've combined his treatment with Private and NHS help and let me tell you, I've got the best in the country and I've still had to quit work to help my son because the medical services here are out of date and overstretched. Having said all of this, I do have another American friend here who is undergoing cancer treatment here, but I think it's more out of necessity because she may not have insurance in America anymore (Her husband works here for one of these banks)...So perhaps their UK Insurance is paying for a private room at an NHS hospital. Also, the hospitals themselves are generally are a huge mess. Blagh. I think you will probably be eating your words once you move to Dubai. The NHS in the UK is FAR superior to ANY medical facility in the UAE. Did you know that most Arabs go to the UK/US or Europe for medical treatment? How can you give the OP advice when you have never lived in the UAE? I never compared the UK NHS to any medical care in the middle east. I was comparing everything to America. (re-read). I have no clue on how i'm going to deal with life in the UAE but I know how awful it's been here in London.
