I am not supporting them, I know nothing about them. (other than what they told me) The OP was asking for a certain type of dog,Ii happened to see two of them at the pet store we went to, so I was just letting her know... I don't know anything about breeding etc... so when they say they can order certain breeds I assume it is legit. However EVERY animal I have ever owned has been a shelter one, but that doesn't mean these pure breeds, or ones at pet shops don't need homes as well. If this pet shop is a bad one maybe someone should report them to someone who can do something. Sorry Shannon. Please don't take my comments personally. There are a few of us here who know how vile the pet shops are in Dubai (ALL of them) and we take every opportunity to let people know. In theory, buying one of those pups and giving it a home *seems* the right thing to do, but while that one animal might live a long and happy life, the HUGE amount of money the pet shops want for pups goes straight back to funding puppy mills. I also say "might" live a long and happy life because so many of the animals sold in Dubai are appallingly bred and may be destined for a life of ill health, pain and huge vet bills. It breaks my heart to walk away from an animal for sale in a shop, but I will not fund animal breeding. Your shelter pets are the lucky ones. :)

There were 2 a few weeks back at the pet shop on sheikh zayed... they also said they can order any breed... they said their breeders are in romania and hungary if i remember right. PLEASE do not support any of these pet shops. They are supplied by backyard breeders (or worse) and the animals will have questionable breeding and all of the future vet bills that come with that. Any place that can "order any breed"...disgraceful. I always say shelter dogs should be any true animal lovers first choice. There's a nice email going around at the moment..."Adopt a shelter dog and save two lives. The one you take home and the one that gets to fill its place." If people insist on a certain breed, PLEASE do your research and source an ethical breeder from (in this case) probably the UK. An ethical breeder will make you jump through hoops before even considering letting you on the wait list for a pup. Any breeder or store who will sell a pup to the first person with the cash is not ethical and supporting their business helps to fund dodgy breeding.

My fave to use were the Tots Bots and Happy Heineys. I drove to Dragon mart and bought 20 microfiber hand-towels. Used them as additional absorbent stuffing. Have fun! :) Thanks for the reminder! I can't believe I forgot to mention Tots. Such a shame the local distributor is no longer selling them. I LOVE Tots and would highly recommend looking at their website to consider them as an option.

Which itti bittis do you ladies like? I'm going to try them with number 2 when he/she comes along. Do you use the sized or one size style? The all in one, or snap in one? I use Baby cheeks as they were a baby shower gift. I like cloth nappies however these are really bulky. Great for when your LO is learning how to toddle though, as its nice soft landing. Also note that all the plastic film lining on the red And the yellow ones seperated in the wash in the first month. They were replaced by Dubai baby pretty easily though, as they said it was a bad batch. I wouldn't use these cloth nappies when my LO sleeps, as that is when he dirties them the most. I find no matter what size setting thy are on, the are great for number 1s but they can't handle a number 2 at all! Easy to wash though, and I love that they grow with your baby. I'm sure there are better options out there. Hi flydiver. My itti's a getting pretty old! They are all itti bitti d'lish and I love them. They are a sized nappy, so I think the newer style Tutto's would be the way to go if someone is looking for a birth-to-potty nappy. I found the Baby Cheeks to be a good daytime nappy. I agree you have to add extra layers and make them a bit bulky if they need to last for any period of time. The only leaks (No1's or No2's) I ever had were with disposable nappies. Maybe you could go and talk to one of the cloth nappy sellers and check the fit of your nappies on your baby?? If they are correctly fitted, they will not leak. Such a shame to have all of those lovely nappies and not be using them to their fullest potential. :D

Yay...another cloth discussion! :D Shame I don't have time for my usual long ramble. (or not, lol) I'm a massive fan of itti bitti's and Baby Beehinds...both Australian brands. I've tried every BumGenius version until about 18 months ago, and I'm not thrilled with any of them. None of my BumGenius nappies have lasted like the other brands have. There's a GREAT site from the UK - The Nappy Lady. - http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/submitTAQ.asp Obligation free advice and a great way to learn all about the different styles and brands of nappies out there. I never got to meet Sophia, but I'd highly recommend seeing her and any cloth-using Mummas so you can see and touch cloth nappies. It's SO hard to work out what might work for you just by looking at websites. Good luck on your cloth journey! Great decision for your little one. :D <em>edited by Green-ish on 17/08/2012</em>

Haven't read all replies...sorry...bath and bed time here! We went to Istabul for ten days with our children, then 5, 3 & under 12 months. We used a Phil&Ted's buggy every day (the only time I've ever loved it...lol) and also had an Ergo carrier with us. It was a bit fiddly getting on and off public transport with the buggy but Turkish people ADORE children and someone always jumped forward to help us. You could get by with just a good carrier. Istabul is amazing!! Have a wonderful holiday.

I hope you get it all sorted SG...that must be very frustrating! The most important thing for pool water hygiene is the chlorine level. Is it a self-chlorinating system or do you have to add chlorine? To be comfortable to swim in, pH etc has to be right too, but it's the chlorine that kills the nasties.

I am also in the early stages of looking at this for my DD. Very intersting tips on here and will be looking up the wallet card. I have started reading ingredients more throughly and it's AMAZING how many E's are out there and in certain products.... It's almost overwhelming! I guess I always *knew* about the E numbers and have made some attempt to avoid the worst of them. It's these horrid salicylates which occur naturally in fresh, raw foods that are worrying me now. Who would have thought olive oil, apples, watermelon and zucchini would send some kids over the edge?? Argh!

Thank you famn-oz. :) I have reserved Sue Dengate's books through the local library and will have a better look at the fed up site as soon as I can. The wallet cards sound great. It's the salicylates that are ringing alarm bells for me. The few fruit and vege my son will actually choose to eat are ALL in the high sal's list and he shows ALL of the typical signs/symptoms of being sensitive to sal's. :( He almost lives on spag bol based on tomato, zucchini, onion and garlic with a little meat thrown in. All big no-no's apart from the meat! The only fruits he'll eat are green apples, green grapes, watermelon, strawberries and cucumber. All high in sal's. I find it interesting that his tastes are for all of the 'worst offenders'. I shall do my best to go failsafe for a while. If that makes the difference I'm hoping for then I guess we can slowly add foods back in and see if he reacts.

I'm in Australia but assume the basics of running a pool are the same everywhere. :) Our pool testing guys recommend 8 hours a day during the swimming season...4 hours early in the morning and 4 hours evening/night. They say 4-6 hours a day off-season or when nobody is using the pool for an extended period. We get the water professionally tested & adjusted monthly and just keep the acid up ourselves in between.

I can get my head around eating food with the nuked bacteria in it, but no amount of heating will get rid of any toxins that have built up. I need to read a lot more about slow cookers before investing in one.

I'm not sure how many more features the 3 has in it, but mine has enough to keep me very happy and like others have said, I'll probably never get around to use them all. do research on what the new features are and if you dont think youll need them, get the samsung 2. I'm happy he has the all clear from your Dr. I have to ask though...a doctor that says your child is not getting enough exercise?? At three months old?? At that age your baby shouldn't be doing much more than lying down and 'chatting' with you or listening to a story or soothing music. I'm not sure if something has been lost in translation. One thing I found when mine were unsettled is that they needed more fresh air. Can you get outside and go for a walk with him in the 'cooler' hours of the morning/evening? It so hard in the Dubai heat! Daily sunshine (in small doses) is good for them and the non-AC air seems to help them drift off into a longer, more peaceful sleep.

...Taking probiotics is a great idea but personally, I'd avoid yogurt until after the infection has cleared. Children often develop temporary lactose intolerance during a stomach upset so dairy won't help... I totally agree with Daza here. Organics sell probiotics for both children and adults and I think you'd be best finding a dairy free one. None of your stomachs will enjoy dairy at the moment. Sorry if I was unclear earlier...we are in Australia and had the tanks cleaned here. We are at greater risk of giardia in the tanks here as it's untreated rain water in the tanks and (as the tank man put it) our roof is probably a rat highway at night! YUCK There are often discussions on the board about tank cleaning. Someone should know a reliable company. There are numerous filters available in Dubai...again, a topic that comes up every now and then. If you use the tap water for drinking or cold food prep, filters are sold in C4. You want to look for something with various size filters...larger micron down to bacterial. All good ones will need replacement filters. Any water you suspect to be contaminated can be made 'safe' for drinking or food prep by boiling it for at least three minutes.

Thanks so much for all of that Scotchanddiet...I am in sunny Qld so good to know about the bakeries. Interesting about the Happy Meals too. Whodathought Macca's could be safe?? I will confess to a few lazy McD's treats over recent months and have always been surprised that my son doesn't go mental after eating there. I will also confess to LOVING McD's here...really good coffee in the McCafe and the kids eat then take themselves off to the play area so I can have five mins peace with my caffeine hit. :D On grapes...is it the salicylates that make them bad or the sugar?? My boy is a shocker after strawberries, watermelon, grapes and green apple - the only fruits he'll eat and all v high in sal's. :( Did I read somewhere that sal's can cause migraines? :( :( I haven't read the FS Diet book. Thanks gorgeous BM. xxx I would love a slow cooker...I think. Lol. I have to wrap my head around the idea of raw meat and vege sitting at room temp for (potentially) hours before being cooked. Or maybe I just don't *get* how slow cookers work? If we leave the house at 7am and sometimes don't get home until after 5pm... Unfortunately Master B is also VERY VERY VERY fussy and won't eat anything 'wet', so no stews, casseroles etc. I have a very limited understanding of 'fail safe', but I believe it's all about no chemicals, including some of those naturally found in foods. Salicylates, for example, are naturally occurring chemicals in many fruits and vegies, but they are an absolute no-no for some kids...aspergers, ADD, ADHD etc. Anyhoo, I'll try to find the time and energy to cook more foods from scratch...I've become very lazy with the lunch boxes mostly, so need to find some healthy, home-made things he'll eat that will also keep fresh/safe when not refrigerated.

Hi Chocs! Thx for your reply! Have you heard of Waggingtail breeders in RAK? The regulars on this forum have all heard of 'breeders' in the UAE and we all know they are all illegal. There are no licenses granted to anyone other than pet stores for the sale of animals in the UAE. If you buy a pup from a local 'breeder' you are both conducting an illegal transaction and funding unethical backyard breeders. If you must have a labrador, I suggest putting yourself on the waiting list with the local shelters or sourcing one from an ethical breeder overseas.

Hi gunscoley...giardiasis is awful! After 12 months of illness when we returned to Aus, we finally had a diagnosis of giardiasis. Only my husband and one of the children actually had the classical symptoms; the rest of us just had a suppressed immune system and caught every other bug that went around. :( We're on tank water...tanks cleaned and bacterial filters installed and we have rarely had a day of sickness since. Giardia is VERY easily passed from person to person. When you don't know what the source is, super diligent hygiene is the only preventative measure you can use. Put as many toys as you can through the washing machine or dishwasher then sit them in the sun for a while. For the others, a dilute bleach solution is recommended...but I detest using bleach around children!! A vinegar solution sprayed on and let the toys/furniture sit in the sun. Wash all clothing and bedding in the hottest water they can handle. Don't allow other children to play with toys that they tend to put in their mouths...ask Mums of toddlers to bring their own toys. And yep...thoroughly wash all fruit and vege and keep hands clean. I hope you beat it!

NinaSimone, if I was in your position, I'd talk directly to her sponsor to find out their plans for the end of the contract. Nothing to do with 'cruelty' or working conditions needs to come into it. Just that you met her, like her and wonder if she's available to work for you at the end of her current contract. If they are not interested in releasing her, that's their prerogative and there's nothing you can do about it. Best to know the actual situation then decide what to do from there. <em>edited by Green-ish on 15/07/2012</em>

If not, I'm sure any of the ladies at Feline Friends could help you with how to settle her in at the other end. I have had achilles pain on and off over the years whether I'm exercising a lot or not at all. Apparently for me it's caused partly by my flat feet but mostly because of over-pronation. The older I get, the further I get in this parenting journey the less tolerance I have for judgemental generalisations. Two weeks ago, for 35 minutes, I lost my 2 yr old. We were on holiday and staying in a camping/cabin park. I left her looking through the fence at some kangaroos, walked 10 steps away, turned my back for thirty seconds to throw clothes in the washing machine, turned back and she was gone. I could see a long way in many directions and could not see her nor did she answer my calls. 35 minutes later my husband found her in the camping ground office where they were calling the police to report her. She had walked a LONG way out of the park and was in the median strip of a BUSY road when a passer-by found her and took her into the office, only because it was the nearest place with a public phone. I have nearly done myself in with the what-ifs. Judge my average parenting as much as you like. I just know I will never again judge any parent for a lapse or mistake that had no intent attached.

I have a question, some of you mentioned not to leave kids in the car while putting the groceries..I usually put my kids in their car seats first, turn the car on then load off the stroller and the groceries, is that wrong then?? I cannot load the stroller first since my child is obviously in it, and also not the groceries, as we are usually in the parking area, and other cars are passing by and also with this heat, I need to put AC as fast as possible, so what's the right way then??? edited by Proudmama012 on 12/07/2012 That's pretty much what I have always done Proudmama. In a busy carpark, I would rather have small children safely strapped into their car seats than sitting in an exposed stroller or trolley...strapped into their seats I know where they are and can start the car for AC when it's hot. <em>edited by Green-ish on 13/07/2012</em>

My LO is only 15 months and I started looking onto this aftermy MIL pointed out that back n the day prior to disposable nappies, he would've been trained by that age. The statistics showed on many sites that prior to the 70s 80 % of toddlers were toilet trained by the age of 18 months, and now it's only 20%. I found that very interesting. Still not sure how I'm going to start though. Mine wears cloth nappies during the day, and I've heard that helps as they know they are wet.... So fingers crossed :) It is interesting flydiver. I used cloth for all of my children and I used to use these statistics as part of my talks with other mums about cloth nappies. Three toilet-trained children later, I wonder if the reason little ones were out of nappies so much earlier 'back in the good old days' is simply because old-style terry squares really were a bit of a pain and Mums just wanted less washing to do?? Disposables are easier than terry squares, pins, pilchers, stinky soaking buckets etc so maybe 'we' just got lazy and left the training until later??

I tried numerous tactics a few times with my son once he showed all of "the signs" but he was not ready/interested/successful until he was three years old. My middle girl got sick of waiting for me to start the process. ;) She just pulled her nappy off and went to the potty by herself when she was about 20 months. Within a week she was completely potty-capable during the day, but nights took another year. My third child, another girl, also started using the potty on her own at about 22 months. She never wore another day time nappy and now, at 2 yrs 8 months, is dry at night.

I'm sorry but all these examples are of parents and carers not putting the child first and allowing their own issues to take precedence...which is not acceptable You're right. It's not acceptable. But it happens. It's awful. I don't think it has anything to do with the carers putting their own issues before the safety of their children. That implies intent.

I can understand a momentary lapse of concentration - I can't understand a 2 hour trip without noticing a child is not with you. I know. It's a horrifying thought. I watched an Oprah episode about a school deputy (or principal??) who left her own child in the car in the school carpark. She was alerted by staff who saw the child in the car at the end of the school day. Far too late. :( In her case, her husband usually dropped the toddler at daycare. A change of routine meant she had to take the child for some reason. The child slept the whole time she was in the car. The mother was extremely stressed at work and on the long drive to work forgot the child was in the car...forgot to take the turnoff to the daycare centre. That woman is living a daily h*ll. My heart broke for her. It's very easy to say we'd never make that mistake but this lady is an intelligent, educated, loving parent who made a horrible, horrible mistake. :( It happens to good people. I love the idea of something like CA's suggestion. Perhaps a sensor in every seat that will not allow the car to be locked and sound an alarm if all of the passengers do not get out?? <em>edited by Green-ish on 12/07/2012</em>

Great suggestions thanks. I'll steer clear of the Ikea one as I have had experience with one and tray keeps falling off under a small amount of weight. Thanks for the idea of the ones that clip into the dining table/chair, think I might investigate them. JPS1- do you have the phil and teds lobster that clips to the table? Where did you get it from, in the UAE? edited by sparkly on 09/07/2012 If the tray was falling off the IKEA chair, it wasn't fitted correctly. ;) It has little tags on the tray that lock it in position and it can't be removed unless it's lifted with some force. The Tripp Trapp is brilliant and I would have gone for that if we could have afforded it. :D As it was, the IKEA chair is worth it's weight in gold. The only thing I don't like about it is the 'harness'...next to useless but none of my kids have tried to escape it. Be very careful choosing one of those chairs that attaches to a table. They don't fit on all tables and sometimes make the table terribly unstable. If you want something portable, a booster that straps to a chair might be better...again, they need to be used on a sturdy chair.

We went straight to single beds for our children. They are all tall so for us, 'toddler beds' would have been a waste of money. Seeing those wee people in a big bed for the first time is priceless! Dress a single bed up with gorgeous fabrics and you'll forget about the cute toddler bed. ;)

I also love either Saucony or Asics. Both make great running shoes. The single most important thing is to find someone who actually knows what they are doing when fitting you. It's not just about the size and shape of your foot, but how you walk and run...what your knees are doing, where the pressure points are on the foot, pronation etc etc. Lol...I'm no expert on the right terminology :D but I recently got shoes fitted correctly (in Aus, at Athletes Foot) and from the very first run I was FAR more comfortable. Running is literally easier in the right shoes. During and after each run I have no pain at all and am recovering much faster.

Have you called Homely Petz? They do pet sitting/visits in your home and all of the carers know what they are doing. I would never leave the care of my pets to someone I did not know or trust. Unfortunately, it's expensive to have your animals well-cared for when you go away- a part of the budgeting many families forget to do before deciding to take pets on. ;) I hope you find a solution that works for you. Time is of the essence!!
