Thanks Abaddon. Actually I had planted everything in pots/seedling trays to begin with. After they sprouted, I put the plants in the ground or in bigger pots. I don't think I loosened the soil - you're probably right as the soil is quite 'hard' in the ground here - only the top layer is looser.... so I gave up and found it easier to plant in pots anyway. As for the pumpkin, I've decided to try growing them in the ground so let's see how that works out!

DD has just turned 1 and I am still exclusively BF. She generally has about 6 feeds in a 24 hour period (of which 3-4 are between 7pm and 7am still :\: ). Those of you who are advocates of continued bf, when did you start introducing cow's milk to your babies and do you give that as a replacement to BM or along with it? Should I be reducing the number of b-feeds by this age? DD has been getting small amounts of cow's milk in her food for a couple months now and seems to tolerate it well, but am just not sure how (and what quantity!) to start giving it to her in a bottle or sippy cup?

I've been thinking of trying Bokashi as it looks simpler and less messy than regular composting. How long have you been doing it and are you happy with the results? Do you just keep the bokashi container inside in your kitchen? Am assuming it does not smell or make a mess in that case?

Hi ladies - was hoping to get some advice. Am a VERY inexperienced wannabe organic veggie grower :) I have planted some seeds in tiny pots recently which have started to sprout nicely. Some of them are pumpkin seeds and the plants are already quite large so I want to transfer them to a bigger spot. Has anyone grown pumpkins here before? Do I transplant them directly into huge pots (as I assume they need large space) or into smaller pots first? Can they be put directly into the ground here? In the past, when I did try to plant some veggies directly into the ground, it did not really grow too well - I had carrots that looked ready, but when I pulled them out, they had only gotten thicker, but not grown past an inch or so (the ones in the pots did much better) - so I would rather use pots, but am not sure if pumpkins will grow in pots and if so, do they need to be really huge?

Sorry can't offer a lift as I am not going but just wanted to say that we have 4 tickets for tomorrow (Saturday) and possibly one for Sunday that we will not be using in case anyone is interested in buying them. These include car park passes, tickets for the concerts and allocated seats in the North Stand.

Hi Plumie - sorry don't have any advice - as you know I'm a new mom myself and am baffled every day by something new myself - but just wanted to say I'm sorry to hear DD is having a rough time and hope you get to the bottom of it real soon. Don't feel guilty though - you are doing the best that you can and you did extremely well bf for 11 months!!! Hugs xx

I have known this sweet Sri Lankan couple who do part time cleaning work around our area for the past few years. They are expecting their second child (a baby girl) in February and unfortunately, due to their circumstances, have decided to return back to Sri Lanka for good in Dec/Jan. The wife has already left and the husband is looking to take back some things for the baby. They are specifically looking for a crib but I'm sure they would appreciate any other baby stuff too. I am putting together a small package for them but DD is still using her crib so cannot give them that. In case anyone is looking to get rid of a crib or anything else they can use let me know and I can get you in touch with the husband directly.

She is almost a year old but is a tall child. It probably won't be super comfortable for her legs in the rear facing position but I believe that it is now recommended to try and keep them rear facing as long as possible. It sounds like your car seat can be fixed with the Isofix clips (i think that's what they are called?!) - am assuming that can be done for both forward and rear facing positions? And I see that it goes up to 50lbs which is almost 25kgs (well 22.7) so that's pretty good!

Thank you for your replies ladies. ShannonB - the carseat you mentioned seems to have most of the features we are looking for, but how do you install it in the car? Can it be tethered/latched or do you have to use the seatbelt? SweetLily - I wrote to Hakan at carseat.se and he wrote back already and has given me a few options. The Axkid Kidzofix actually fits all our requirements, but I had not actually considered the aspect of traveling with the seat! And the reason i was thinking of the convertible car seat was JUST IN CASE DD gets to a point where she completely refuses to sit in a rear facing seat or if she starts getting car sick sitting rear facing (which seems to be the case with several babies on here!)...

Sorry ladies I know this has been discussed on here several times before, but I still cannot find all the information I need. DD is already almost 12kgs and we need to move her into a bigger carseat (I've just realized that we should have done this when she hit 9kgs!!). I would ideally like to continue with a rear-facing car seat for now with the option to make it forward facing later on if possible - we went to Just Kidding, and either the rear facing ones go up to 18kgs only or there is a convertible one but that can only be fixed with the seat belt. My question is that does anyone make a car seat that will go up to 25kgs, be convertible, i.e. rear facing for now and can be turned around to be forward facing later, AND can be fixed with the isofix clips? I am also searching online but I would love to hear from someone who has personally tried one of these?

I have a box of 125 Standard Pre-Sterilized Disposable Liners 8ox by Playtex - is that what you are looking for? You're welcome to have the box as I bought it thinking they were for milk storage and freezing but as I do not use Playtex bottles, they are of no use to me. I live in the Green Community though (bought them in the Choithrams here a while ago) so am not sure if that is convenient for you!

Thanks ladies. I am not too worried about the occasional something with salt or sugar in it, but I just don't see the point in introducing it deliberately as neither really has any nutritional value IMO. Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I just find it frustrating when some people (especially the in-laws :\:) behave as though I'd doing something mean or depriving my child of something she'll enjoy. Yes, she will ... at some point, but there's no need to give it to her now when she's so young!

All the books say no salt or sugar until the baby is 1 at least. Personally, I don't see any nutritional benefit in sugar and am in no rush to give DD (who is almost 11 months old) any for as long as I can avoid it - and that includes on her 1st birthday. Some of my friends think I'm being OTT but I figure she doesn't know any better so why introduce it to her? I also have a friend who has a DD almost the same age as mine and she has already been giving her bites of cookies, ice cream, desserts etc. - granted she is her 3rd baby but it's just something I am not comfortable with. Same with salt although I think a little in moderation will be okay after she turns 1 especially as then it makes it easier to eat the same foods as us etc. Just curious what you other moms think about this?

Am definitely in! But I still plan to finish my last 2 sessions of the shred that I started back in August just so I can say I've sort of finished it once at least!! I started Hypoxi a couple of weeks ago and have had my dad visiting and just haven't had the time to do it, but will definitely finish it this week and then start all over again! Let's all try to encourage each other :)

Thanks ladies - we needed to have the garden fixed up anyway so contacted a company that was recommended on here and they are ripping out the damas trees this week. It is frustrating as we just paid AED 900 to have them trimmed a few months ago and are now paying another AED 1900 to have them removed :( But after everything I've read on here, I think that's far cheaper than repairing damage to the house/walls/foundations etc... Thanks again for all the information on here - I would have not realized how serious the problem can be with these trees if not for EW!!

Hi Moonbeam - welcome to the world of shredding :) I have not been consistent enough to be able to give you any great weight loss stories, but I definitely feel the difference in my fitness level and stamina since I started shredding. I try to do it 5 times a week but the weekend comes along and throws me off EVERY weekend :( However, if you're looking for inspiration, do a search on here for the earlier Shred threads and there are plenty of success stories with people losing weight and inches. CycloneT is a regular on here - she used to be a regular shredder but has now defected to the 'running side' ;) but she has posted her own success story on here a few times. I am trying to finish up my 30 days and then will start a new thread - it will probably end up being an October Shred Thread at this rate but see you there!

Thanks Nomad - just spent a bunch and had them trimmed. Now we'll probably have to spend a bunch more to have them removed - very frustrating. We are actually planning to take out the grass and irrigation system next to the damas trees anyway and just put down gravel. However, they are only about 6 feet from the house in that section - is it quite likely that they will damage the foundation in that case? What is a better alternative to put as a 'hedge' here - we are in the Green Community and do not have perimeter walls, only low fences.

I just saw this thread and it turns out that these conocarpus trees are what they call damas here :( We had no idea about them and had our 'landscaper' plant these all along the perimeter fence :( On one side he had put another hedge plant in between these damas and naturally those did not grow at all. On the other side we have damas all along the fence and so all the grass under it has died. This is after he has put an expensive irrigation system and that area being watered up to 3 times a day sometimes! So we have just decided to remove the grass from that section and put in gravel or pebbles as clearly nothing is going to grow in that area!! I wish I had known about these trees before we had the garden done :(

Sorry to hijack but we need a garden overhaul as well and I came across this thread. Green-ish does the blue metal look like the gravel in the photo from the link you have posted? That might just work for us too - where did you source it from if you don't mind me asking? We would like to leave our backyard with grass as we have spent a fortune planting it all and maintaining it all these years, but the sides of the garden just do not stay green (it is where the dogs go pee and so we were thinking of taking out the irrigation lines there and putting down gravel and some desert plants. In another strip our 'landscaper' planted a row of damas at the fence and laid down grass in front of it. I had no clue at the time that damas sucks out all the moisture in the area and so nothing really grows under it :\: so again a waste of irrigation lines and precious water!

Urban Tails is fantastic but super expensive in my opinion. If you can easily afford it, it's a good option as the fur babies appear to be well taken care of and they have an indoor/outdoor play area to keep them entertained and socialized. I personally used Woof earlier this year and was very happy with them - Tania is very hands on and sent me regular emails with photos as updates - my fur babies were very well looked after when they got back from there and as I have them on a raw diet, I was happy that they agreed to follow my feeding instructions without any fuss. This summer i had to travel and Woof was not available so I used Bark and Purr. Christine drove out to pick up the dogs and she truly appears to be an animal lover and they were also in good shape when they came back and she kept them on my raw diet. My only 'complaint' would be that she did not email or sms while I was away which was a bit frustrating but I don't think she gets much time to get on the computer to be fair. The cost was really reasonable.
