Both Sweet Connections and Gluten Free Supermarket have online shops so you can order all your baked GF stuff. Sweet Connections also has a kiosk in Mercato and a cafe in DIFC, although I haven't made it to either. Ripe market (Saturday mornings at Time Square at the moment) has several GF stalls.

Sweet Connection has a cafe in DIFC which only serves Gluten Free food so that's probably your only option if you're worried about cross contamination. Carluccio's does have a gluten free menu with quite a selection. Also, as mentioned above The Cycle Hub in Motor City has a GF menu (it is a Paleo restaurant). You can also get gluten free sandwiches at Shakespeare & Co.

Yes that's what we're thinking of doing but just wanted to know if someone has done that recently? I guess I book a return ticket to Hong Kong. Then a one way to Dubai from HK. Do they need to show a hotel booking too in HK? And what happens when they come here and need to register with the Philippine embassy - is there any issue then?

I was not aware just how difficult the process is until now. The maid is in the Philippines - she has been in Dubai before but working for another family. We already have her work visa (spent the AED 5000+ on that) as we could not bring her on a visit visa. Now when she went to get her OEC over there, they tell her we have to go to the Philippines consulate here to get approval etc and now when I started looking into it more carefully, I realize that it's virtually impossible. I believe earlier you could do it through and agency but the one I contacted now have said that there is nothing they can do. I believe the only possible way is if she can get a 'tourist' visa to another country like Singapore or Malaysia etc and then she flies from there to Dubai on her Dubai visa. Has anyone successfully managed to do this recently? Any tips/guidance would be much appreciated!

I know this is an older thread but we are deciding between Singapore (Sentosa), Malaysia (Lagkawi or Penang) or Indonesia (Bintan Island or Bali) for next week (I know totally last minute!!). We've sort of narrowed it down to Bali but am now getting worried that it will be raining the whole time. I love a little bit of rain on a beach holiday but not major downpours all day every day! Anybody have experience with Bali (or these other areas) in August? We have a 3.5 year old and a 17 month old and the original plan was to go to Thailand but my husband had visa issues so we had to cancel that and look for a last minute replacement. Any ideas would be welcome, including resort names that do not break the bank too much! Thanks :)

I have never seen it in Dubai. I order it through Green Pastures directly and then use Aramex Shop and Ship to bring it over. Haven't found a better option yet.

Yes this would be for a party at home. I can't remember the name of the companies but year when we did a Barney theme for my daughter's birthday there were a couple party organisers who had a barney who could do a home visit. We also recently went to the launch of a new party store near the Green Community DIP and there was a barney there who made a surprise appearance :)

Hi ladies - just wondering if any of the party companies here have a Minnie Mouse who can visit for a toddler's party? I've seen Barney and a few other characters but haven't found a Minnie yet and I know my 3 year old would be over the moon if Minnie could visit her on her birthday ;)

Thank you CP but she is from the Philippines. We have booked a cheap-ish flight on fly dubai to Muscat - we were told by them that she can fly in and fly out on the same flight back without needing a visa to get into Oman so let's hope that's true!

Ladies - we have just hired a maid who was here on a visit visa and have processed her work visa. She now needs to exit the country and enter back in on the work visa. Do any of you know if she can do a road trip to Oman or do we need to send her out by air somewhere? What is the most cost effective option?

Skiingfreak what kind of smoothies were you adding them to? I recently bought wheatgrass powder and have been adding a spoonful to my smoothies and I don't even taste it in there? Do you do smoothies with almond or rice milk or even yoghurt? I've been making one with almond/rice mile, banana or avocado, chia seeds, raw cacao, virgin coconut oil, wheatgrass and a touch of honey and it's yummy!

Great - will bake it the day before then :) Many of the comments I read for the pro- pre-baking (if that makes sense!) said that if you don't pre-bake the base can be soggy... so I guess that's not the case? Do you change the baking times or temperature (somewhere else I read if the crust is unbaked then bake it for like 15 mins on a higher heat and then lower the heat for the remaining time)? Sorry about all the questions but since I'll be baking these for the first time for a bunch of guests at Christmas, I'm a little nervous!!

Also, in the interest of saving time (and because I'm almost 8 months pregnant and cannot stay on my feet too long!!), is it okay to make the pies the night before do you think or should they ideally be made at the time and served hot? I'm also doing all the sides etc so would be nice if I can do some of the stuff before hand! (we're ordering the turkey so the big job is taken care of :) )

That's right - it does not apply automatically. You can get it automatically if both parents are US citizens. If only one is, as in our case, and we live overseas, you have to either have the birth in the US or be able to prove through documentation that you have lived in the US for 5 years, 2(or 3?) of which are after the age of 14.

Hi Ecochic - I have been feeding RAW for about 14 years now. We have been through many 'phases' depending on what I have read/heard etc, but eventually just switched to the pure raw meat/organs/bones model with no veggies/grains/dairy etc added and did that for the past 6-7 years or so. The only supplement I have added is good quality fish oil (I order mine from the States). There is a great forum on yahoo groups for rawfeeding - you can join in and the diet is discussed in great detail on there. I have never posted anything myself there but got a LOT of information off those forums. Good luck!

Ladies - I know this is an old thread but I was hoping for some more info. For our first baby, we ended up going back to the States in the end and having the delivery there as we were lead to believe that was the only option for automatic US citizenship for her. However, now our second is due in Feb, and while I was at the US embassy today, I was told that as I am a US citizen, another option is to have the baby here and then apply for an immigrant visa and once we get that, as long as the baby enters the US within 6 months of getting that, he or she automatically gets citizenship. Has anyone else gone down this route and is it worth pursuing? The lady at the embassy did say it was a lot of paperwork and we'd have to go to the Abu Dhabi embassy to get all this done, but if I can avoid having to go stay in the States again now for a few months with a toddler, then it may be worth it. I believe it falls under the Child Citizenship Protection Act.

From what I was told, short visits/holidays in the US etc are not necessarily accepted as proof of residence there. I am a US citizen, my entire family is American but i am married to a non US person and as I cannot prove that I have spent a total of 5 years in the US, of which 3 need to be after the age of 14, I had to go to the US to have my first baby and will be heading there again in Jan for the delivery of the second. It is very frustrating but they were quite clear at the Consulate that you have to be able to prove it through either school transcripts or tax filing. So even though I was born there and lived there until I was 3 and then have spent a total of more than 3 years after the age of 14, but as there is not really any way to prove through documentation that I was there from 0-3 or the many long summer visits etc, I was told my child's chances of getting a US passport if she was born here were very slim! In the past, US passports weren't even stamped half the time upon entry or exit so they do not take that as valid proof if you were just visiting several times over that period.

Sherryd - I have your email address now so you can remove it if you like. But I did want to say that the banana muffins are quite 'brownish' and not white so they may not work for you. DD does really like them (just baked some today) so it's a nice recipe to keep anyway. As for the sugar 'issue' it really is a personal thing I guess. Like one of the other ladies said, we all try to do the best we can for our children. I do not feel like I am denying DD anything as she has never tried sugar. She loves fruit and vegetables, home made 'sweetened' baked goodies but I just do not want to give her 'refined sugar' for as long as possible as I do believe it is terrible for all of us. My line of thinking from what I've read and my own experiences is actually the opposite - which is that babies given sugar at a really young age are more likely to develop 'cravings' or 'obsessions' for them and by not giving it at such a young age, I am hoping she will not develop as much of a taste for it. For example, I and many of my friends who were not really allowed sodas as children are still not interested in drinking them now, whereas most people I know who were allowed soda at a very young age still drink a lot of it... so again, I am not saying my way is right but it's what I feel comfortable with :) And SherryD, as I am half Indian and married into a family of chocoholics, believe me, I've heard it all - from giving DD honey to sweets to tea to everything else since she was quite young but have managed to stand my ground so far!

SherryD - I don't give my DD sugar either as I believe it is completely unnecessary. For her 1st bday I ordered a regular cake (for the other guests) but she did not eat any - she wasn't even interested in it. For her 2nd bday which is coming up, I posted on another site and was given this recipe.. haven't tried it yet but it looks good (it isn't a banana recipe though!): http://thenewhuntergatherer.blogspot.com/2008/06/food-to-celebrate.html?m=1 Alternatively, I have a sugar free recipe I use to make banana cupcakes/muffins for her and she loves them so you could probably try that and stick it in the cake tin instead of a muffin tray. Let me know if you would like that recipe and I can try and dig it up (if you put your email address on here I can scan and email it to you if you like as I cannot find the link to it online anymore but I do have it printed out :\:)

Just like to second DISH - they are absolutely fantastic, my friends and I have used them on several occasions and their food, presentation, service has always been impeccable. We've always used them for a few starters and main courses (they walk around between the guests serving little individual portions of everything and another time we also had a table full of yummy salads) but they mentioned they also do a bbq which would be great too I'm sure!

Hi ladies - hoping to get some advice here. I have successfully managed to grow tomatoes, carrots, lettuce, eggplant, bittergourd here in the past. However, some of my other plants, such as the zucchini and cucumber grow amazing plants (creepers), even flower, but then i don't get any veggies growing on them?? At the moment, I have a few huge okra plants growing but not a single okra on them. I also planted a few Incan berry bushes, have tons of flowers on them but no berries. What am I doing wrong? Why would they flower but give no fruit after? Also, while I'm on the subject, since the weather is cooling down, what else can be planted right now to grow during the cooler season (in pots or in the ground, mainly asking about fruit and veggies).

I've been using cloth diapers for DD since she was a few months old and love them. We've been using the Itti Bitti (love them!), a few Cushie Tushies (very cute, but too bulky when she was little! Okay now) and Bonnibuns. The Bonnibuns were great until recently but I think she has outgrown them now. The elastic legs leave red marks on her chubby thighs and they leak (wee) if I leave one on for nap time. She is 22 months old and 15kgs. Should I be adding additional inserts in the Bonnibuns for naptimes? Also, for those of you who have larger babies, which cloth diapers worked best? I am thinking of buying some more Itti Bittis but I see that the large only goes up to 16.5kgs so should I look at ordering the Tutto instead? Any other brands that work well for larger babies?
