Well ladies ... my friend says that the reason bamboos are called lucky bamboos is they don't always thrive in every home and you are actually lucky if they thrive in your home... which I seem not to be... as for her, like GloriousMorning hers were fine for 2 years or so and then started withering... so if you believe the superstition, you can be lucky for a certain period of time and then your luck might just wear off... hehe... anyway since my luck doesn't seem to hold even for a while, wont be buying them again... :( We met on Friday in a group so could not get a detailed feedback from her.. she will visit me after 2 days... will just ask her about the other plants now and try to take care of them as much as possible... she did say not to change bamboo water before one week... if that helps anyone...!

@ ScottishRose... I think it doesn't matter if MIL has only one son or not (mine has just one too)... what matters is whether she is a person in her own right or not, instead of just being emotionally dependent on others for her well-being... and that goes for all of us... we need to have a life, so that we are able to let others live their own in peace... I think every woman should develop that kind of self-reliance to age gracefully and live a tranquil life...

I know how you feel. I got bamboos and they were fine for 2 years, never gave them any fertiliser nothing, just watered them and had them indoors. Then someone told me that I need to change their water every day and need to use fertiliser so I did and they started dying.... Now I am back to not giving them any fertiliser and not changing their water and they are still dying.... It is just their natural death.... Ok... this has thrown some light on my situation... I was changing water every other day initially and then i read it should be changed every 2 week... so i stopped... but it seems their dying hours started right then... cause their condition seem to be deteriorating slowly anyway.... its excruciating to watch... i hate to be responsible for something and not being able to take care of it... this is the reason I am weary of having pets, because its a huge responsibility and unless I know I can give that kind of attention I wont keep one... last time my bamboos died I felt really disappointed with myself and it is happening all over again... :(

What makes a wise mother in law? ... a friend is working on a social project of sorts and asked me this question... from my own experience i told her... non-interfering in relationship between the spouses, accepting daughter-in-law's short comings and supporting her wherever necessary... not prying in her affairs... not talking to her son about daughter-in-law behind her back, if has any issues then discuss when both are present... What are your observations?? I agree with all of the above. From the opinion of a DIL (never blessed with children so can't give a MIL's opinion) these are all the qualities which I so loved about my late MIL. There were obviously times when we disagreed (sometimes coming at things from diametrically opposite directions) but we never fell out as we each understood that we were entitled to our own opinions and would invariably agree to differ. I regret to say, however, that my mother - whilst not being a complete ogress - doesn't hesitate to criticise my DH both to me and to his face. To his everlasting credit he manages to ignore her moments of rudeness for which, after approaching 40 years, I believe he deserves a medal ?. Mind you she doesn't reserve her rudeness and criticism just for him - if anybody displeases her they soon know about it? With age my mother has become the same with people she is close too... but thankfully she holds herself when it comes to SILs hehe... otherwise I cant imagine my husband being so magnanimous... :) edited by Grittt1 on 05/03/2015

Your friend will derive a wealth of info on that topic here no doubt to garner research for her project, but if it is intended for publication I think you should make that clear from the outset so contributors have that in mind. She has not asked me to post this question here... but her asking me got me thinking... and since one gets pretty interesting feedback on such issues here on EW... and that too from women from different cultures and all... so was curious to know what general experiences and observations are... who knows, it might help me become a good MIL one day ... ;)

I think mine got overwatered and rotted the roots eventually. The leaves turned yellow before it eventually gave up. I'm itching to get a new pot. Does it have good drainage? I think they don't like too wet a feet... I have no idea GM.... I am waiting for tomorrow... a friends who actually 'talks' to her plants is coming over from Oman... will get a crash course in taking care of indoor plants from her and let you know here if interested... !

maybe over watering them, really how can you kill bamboo.......its a weed.....lol I hope their blood wont be on me, and they are just dying their natural death...my DH however believes the former... wish he never got them in the first place...it seems they somehow die in our house. can you really over water bamboos?...... other 2 small plants seem to be doing fine...was hoping to chance upon a bamboo guru here.. but seem to be out of luck... :(

Two ideas which needs a bit of effort but can be managed once a week... :) 1. Home made crepes with either nutella, peanut butter or choice of jam... the easiest thing ever... 2. Chicken or cheese, or just cheese quesadillas ... you can add onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, olives if kids like... although ready made tacos are available making your own is easy and can be done a day earlier... just make sure to make them crispy and let them cool before putting them in the lunch box...

A British Airways gate agent once told me " This would be a great job if it weren't for passengers like you!" Not understanding that "passengers like me!" pay her meager salary! You need major help. Like major major. And you have children my God. Think about your children and get some help. Ignore, ignore, ignore.... [b'>Either a wind up merchant, admin trying to liven things up, or someone with a brick short -[/b'> whichever it is they can only continue as long as we respond !! lol Good detective skills there... Grittt1 you are very slim. I am 5'5" weigh 56 kgs and considered myself slim :) Since you do not need to lose weight and only want to build stamina, in your shoes I would start gently exercising. Do not go all out as you will then burn out and be put off by exercise. If you have stairs at home, go up and down the stairs for 15 minutes a day. Start by walking up and down and after a week see if you can run. Follow this with some jumping jacks (if you do not have problems with your knees) and plank. That way you have got something done without needing to leave the house or buy expensive equipment. I also love Daza's idea of doing some exercise when watching tv. A colleague recently told me instead of only sitting to watch tv she does kettle bell exercises for the first 30 minutes. I think that is a great idea. Are you seeing a doctor for the anemia? I hope Beebers chimes in on this thread - I always look forward to her posts on topics like this. Dont have stairs ... but no problem with knees and will try jumping jacks and plank... I don't watch TV at all... just some videos with DH on laptop when spending time together and I cant imagine what his reaction would be if I start moving around on the couch next to him... ;) Doctors give multi-vits and its hard to keep up with them... so I will just try to improve the diet and start with the exersize ... this thread is really helping me sort out in my head what would suit my lifestyle in this regard...

Oh yes... sit-ups and planks too for the belly... my sis had told me long time back that that's the only way to lose belly fat... but since my lose cloths and slim person doesn't reveal much of it, and DH was not complaining about it either, I let it be... but all this talk has motivated me to do something about it as well... thanks everyone for the motivation...!

Hi Grittt1 If you struggle with motivation to exercise and haven't done a lot before I'd start with just trying to work extra activity in to your day. Find a time of day that suits to do a brisk walk of at least 20 minutes, building up the distance and time gradually. Take the stairs not the lift. If there is an escalator, walk, don't just stand there. Work out some exercises you can easily do when you are watching TV (if you watch TV). High knees up on the spot, leg raises etc. Something to raise your heart rate and something to work your muscles. Google some ideas, you'll find loads of suggestions. If you are anaemic it could be making you breathless and affecting your stamina. Make sure you are eating plenty of iron rich foods along with foods that aid iron absorbtion. Plenty of protein too. Thanks a lot... i think this should suit my lifestyle... i am physically an active person, the sort who wouldn't sit even while talking on phone... but I am really busy with some online voluntary work that I do, so besides the house chores I am sitting most of the day on my laptop... so mentally I don't lack motivation but time constraint made me neglect my health for so long..... I am a bit anaemic as well... so i think i would start eating better and start walking or light jogging for starters...!

hello i would highly advise that you calculate your macros rather than calories you can use any online calculator to do this and if you want to do it by hand let me know i'll send you the formula you need to use. once this is calculated stick to it, this kind of lifestyle dieting is called IIFYM (if it fits your macros) it's a form of flexible dieting and it works wonders. i love it because i still get to it what i like as long as it fits my macros. you have to note down everything and the best way to do this is myfitnesspal. the problem with that app is it is calories based which i find really useless, so you have to search on youtube how you can edit your macros on myfitnesspal. there are lots of videos that will help you. my next advise is to do cardio like 2x a week. walk on an incline or stair master or cross trainer for like a min of 20 mins, or what i do is zumba <3. i burn like 650 kcals on that alone lol. and 3x a week i am lifting weights. that way you will gain muscle and get you toned nicely. 1 day i do upper, the next i do full body the 3rd day i do leg day so that i have the weekend to recover after leg day. i love lifitng weights as it burns calories for 24 hours becuase it's repairing the muscles you have weared out making you stronger. 2 ladies that really helped me out are jessie hilgenberg (i purchased her ebooks because shes that GOOD) and the other one is 1fitashmom, you can find her on youtube she posts videos of her flexible dieting and exercises. hope this helps Phew... !!... that seems like so much work... I wish I was that motivated....maybe one day though now that i have started even thinking about doing something to keep fit... will save this info for then.... thanks a lot... :)

I would imagine that you would need to somehow increase food intake slightly to compensate for excercise then? Any form of movement is good and simply going for a brisk walk (with dogs works best for me) will help but since you're enviable metabolism is an issue then might i suggest...porridge? Smallish pot and then a walk while the weather is cooler (or early in the morning). I take it this means having breakfast before the walk and not after.. ? ... and will treadmill indoors be fine once the weather turns hot... which will happen soon?

Hi everyone... lately I have noticed I have no physical stamina to brave even a relaxing day out in the park... so I am planning to start working out to build some stamina... I am 37, weight is 52 kg, height 5.4 ... never gain weight, in fact prone to lose it easily... can anyone tell me what time is the best to do the work out, what type of workout routine is best to stay fit without losing weight ... I am not looking for a really ambitious plan ... just something that can built my stamina a bit and keep me healthy generally... TIA edited by Grittt1 on 02/02/2015

Did the doctors you visited ever get your vitamin D level checked? ... my sister had real low vitamin D and she would get neck and shoulder pains and a full blown migraine after a strenuous day ... Vitamin D is what helps bones absorb calcium... although i agree that you should get an MRI and CAT done but maybe getting to know your vitamin D level is a good idea.. Hope you get well soon...

The policy here is to underplay any unpleasant news and let it die its natural death... esp when there is no serious concern... it works beautifully for the image of the country and keeps the public calm... [b'>except for those who are always on a lookout for something to worry about... [/b'> I agree that intelligence here is on top of everything that's going on in the country and we are in safe hands... I do not think that is a very fair comment bearing in mind the recent attention this subject has received or the consequences of the behaviour of some to this subject. Being vigilant and aware of incidents should not be dealt such belittling in responses. (on here). You are right Lolacat... that we should not belittle any ones concern, and i did not mean to do that... its just that, the growing phobia is general all around the world is a bit daunting and it seems things are blown out of proportion too easily... one feels weary I hope that concerns of all French mothers in UAE and of all mothers in the world irrespective of their nationalities and religion are put to rest soon... edited by Grittt1 on 26/01/2015 edited by Grittt1 on 26/01/2015

Gel works best and you don't need to go away at all... it works fine but if your building has the issue of cockroaches they will probably be back within 6 months or so... companies do give warranty and you can make use of that if that happens... Just make sure they apply the gel discreetly and not right in your face to see... looks ugly... get it done by a reputable company... !

You don't need to be sorry at all... I am fine and still hopeful... :) ... earlier I was not that bothered but lately DD has started feeling more about it, and although having her for myself seems to complete me, its obvious she needs a sibling and so I want to do something about it... remember in prayer... and will pray you are able to resolve things at your end and everything works out beautifully for you...

I have wanted a child for long and took no precautions but nothing as yet... now seriously considering going for treatment.. :( coming from a family of 6 siblings I really feel children should have siblings closer to their age to have a fun childhood... !

I know someone who has exactly the same type of husband. She has a child with him and since he is a good father she feels she it would be selfish on her part to leave him when the child is so young and needs both her parents to grow up well.. so basically to keep the household calm and fightless she caves in on most issues... although every marriage needs compromise but this seems to me more of sacrifice... i think you had a lucky escape... as most above me said... cut off completely...you have no reason to be guilty and no one should be allowed to make you feel that way..

You will need to vaccum sand almost daily !! We have tiled floors but a large rug in the centre of the lounge and rugs in the bedrooms..also the door runners collect sand as does everywhere else !! Agreed... also its way simpler to just vacuum the entire place, tiled or rugs, rather than brushing and using dust picker... I think you should check the availability in UAE of any meds that you or DH might be on... if not easily available here it might be an idea to bring along enough supply that can last you till your next visit back home... !

I went last night, found it much better than previous years. The new layout is a vast improvement. It's not a surprise find as such but my children loved the Deception show they have on. I normally moan about having to take my children (who think it is marvelous) but dare I say it, this year I actually enjoyed going. Same here... We went after 2 or 3 years as DH hates it somehow.... since his friends made a plan to go together he conceded... i already like it but was pleasantly surprised to see so many changes... its much more festive somehow... the entrance looks great now... esp loved the Dancing Fountain... !
