I have a Volvo XC60 with built-in booster seat. That sealed the deal for me having a 5year old, 3year old and almost 2year old. I bought it because of the built-in booster seat and so happy with it. Just perfect for what I need. We have a bigger secondary car that my husband drives but for school runs, ahhh this one's a breeze. Easy peasy and I could play their favourite DVD to watch while waiting in the car. Makes mums life easy. And yes, very good service! Yes! I love the booster seat. I don't even have children but managed to sway my husband with the "it's a family car... for the future" line  they're not wasted anyway, my niece likes them!

Thanks so much for the input. I agree, the Volvo looks like a smoother ride but i'm so much more leaning towards the Tahoe. The Volvo looks like it will fly off the road if (god forbid) it's hit by a chunkier car Swisslady, which year is your Tahoe? Being able to start the car from 100m away is exactly what I need (forgot to mention it earlier!) Does the Tahoe cool down quite quickly? Thank you so much for the help swisslady, it really helps that you have experienced both. Don't worry my smaller XC60 had a bump earlier this year and the car stood strong! I'm biased though aha, the XC90s are lovely to look at, I enjoy seeing them on the road while I'm driving. Never tried a Tahoe, perhaps I'll pitch the idea to my own hubby in the future :D ONE thing I will add though, which probably put you off Volvo all together... If you do unfortunately find yourself in a small bump or crash, the parts take FOREVER to get to Dubai as they're coming from Sweden. At least ours did.

My vote is for the Volvo XC90! Definitely, always, 100% for the Volvo -- I drive a Volvo XC60 myself and it's the safest I've ever felt, drives fantastically, corners smoothly and the high spec range like mine comes with bum warmers... Because, you never know when 20 degrees can become too cold! Sorry I can't help with the other two as I've no experience myself, but I'm sure you'll make the best decision for you and your family!

Anyone heading to Garn al Sabhka, take the right turning near Silverene Tower and West Avenue Tower onto Al Gharbi Street and just do a loop round through JBR to get onto SZR or Garn Al Sabhka. Traffic is as normal there, I came that way this morning. I could see from our place the tail back right down Marina road! Hope whatever has happened isn't too serious :(

of course you report it! you get his name and number off the information sheet in the back of the taxi and let RTA know they have a thief working for them. Forget about drunk people eh,, think about the woman who is unsure and takes him at his word...this guy needs to be reported. As a matter fact, if you 'think' he should be reported you need to do it. Just to add. A good habit to get into, especially when you are alone is the minute you get in the taxi, put his information in your Iphone and mail it to someone. I called RTA on Friday when I had chance, I had managed to get a picture of his taxi number and registration plate as he was waiting to pull off so they came in handy! And yes you're right! There's been a few times when I've been on my own in a taxi and texted said husband with "just in case... i'm in taxi so and so" ha. Ah well! Thanks everyone else - sounds like I'm not the only one who has almost or definitely fallen victim to the little scams they play. I just couldn't believe the cheek of it! I actually think I asked him do you think I'm daft!!!? I walked away completely baffled he'd actually tried doing it! @mumto2, that's a good idea. I always feel mean when I count my change when they return it too but hey ho, will start counting when I get it to them!

It's definitely better during the day, especially at this time of year when it's clear!! :) We always take our visitors around midday, so I'd say any time between 11 and 3 would be fine. I've been up once before at night and the only good thing was that you could see the fountains, but other than that not much else but little lights everywhere! Awh he's going to love it no matter what time you go :)

Doesn't surprise me if Oct/Nov is the most difficult time, with everyone either returning to Dubai or brand new in the city from September onwards. My SIL found her maid via EW's classifieds, but I suppose you just have to be persistent :( Does your current maid not know of any recommendations? Have you placed your own ad on the classifieds?

All I'm going to say is don't move here unless you are 100% sure - no, 150% sure! Life here comes with its difficulties, its loopholes, its frustrations... Without a doubt. It will be tough, as it is if you move anywhere in the world. I'm in my early twenties, visited Dubai several times and had my heart set on the place. If you can say you'd love to live here, despite the flaws, then move. You sound like you're searching for someone to tell you to do it, to commit to the move. If you're comfortable in your lives where you are, with friends and family, with enough money to get you both by and lots of savings and pensions, why move? My husband and I moved because it made sense as Dubai was the better option for us both. Can you say that?

Hello Slightly off topic, but where exactly is the new part of the mall? Thanks FFx You can take the escalators going up from the Home Center side. It's on the level above. Yes it's above all the home stores like Crate & Barrel, near the metro link entrance :) it's lovely, lots of new shops and restaurants to explore!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I -think- buying fireworks here is impossible due to safety and all that. I think you also have to have a licence and permission to set them off at home? I think there's lanterns in Dragonmart if you're happy to let something off into the air this evening :D Otherwise check with the golf clubs or even JBR beach, I imagine there'll be a show at one of them.

well dubai police take traffic violations very seriously and everytime a complaint it raised to the 8004353 number they send the driver an sms warning that a complaint has been made against their reckless driving... three complaints and a fine is issued! so yes, please people... do complain if you are faced with a similar situation... if all these violations get reported the police will be in a better position to monitor and control these... the eyes of the public are more valuable than the eyes behind a CCTV control room... all u need to do is note down the driver's registration number, type of car, the street/area you were in when the violation happened (this is to cross check with the camera footage) and also the time of the occurrence... This is definitely useful to know! I try to take a laid back approach to driving, as long as I can move between lanes safely and with enough time, I'm not too fussed to move out of the way of the large 4x4 speeding up behind me. I just think to myself -- they must have somewhere very important to be! Keeps me sane :) What terrifies me is the lack of common sense on roundabouts, especially the new one down Garn Al Sabkha! Cars just pull out even when they can see you're indicating to go down the exit just after them. Once I had to swerve out of the way. My hand didn't leave the horn for a good 5 minutes. Felt like following him and stopping to yell... But you know... I try to be laid back

No, writers shouldn't limit their writing in genres and topics... But when a piece of work is being published in one of the industry's "leading" publications in the UK, you'd expect a little more effort to ensure it's factually correct instead of a piece of tripe that belongs on a blog somewhere in the depths of the Internet. Shameful that some editor at the Telegraph allowed them to publish it - lazy journalism! As a writer, he should at least be contributing something useful to the narrative. I'd prefer to start a debate with a writer who has ground to stand on, if I'm honest, which Mr. Proud does not. And yes, AdventurerB, I agree! All bad press is good press, hey!?

So we should be prepared for no radio ever? Really, why not talk to the families of martyrs on the radio every hour, or tell us some inspirational stories from their lives? Why block the music? Tell me no one is listening to their iphones now instead of the radio and everyone is mourning every morning on the way to work and every night when stuck in traffic? As far as I understand, the radio is staying silent while the Sheikh visits all the families of those lost. It's the first time in a very long time that the UAE are mourning soldiers lost in a war effort. I doubt they've rarely had to worry about how long the radio is going to be out for before -- so they've taken the decision to treat the deaths similar to that of a leader or a Sheikh... With silence on the radio. Out of respect.

Every country has its laws and customs that are to be respected. What is strange for you or me may be the norm for someone else. Some of the laws listed below are also in effect in the west e.g: Unmarried couple who live together and “lewdly associate” with one another may face up to a year in prison - west Virgina Milan requires that citizens must smile at all times, or face a fine In Florida, it is illegal to pass wind in a public place after 6pm on Thursdays In England, it is illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament In Oklahoma, it is against the law to have a sleeping donkey in your bathtub after 7pm Great if your donkey is awake and just enjoying a bit of relaxation time. Not so good if it has snoozed off in a lava of bubbles. In Canada, by law, one out of every five songs on the radio must be sung by a Canadian Great for Justin Bieber fans, not so great for the sane. Part of the CRTC (Canadian Radio and Television Commission) that for both types of programming there has to be at least a fifth by Canadian performers. It is forbidden to be fat in Japan In the country that brought us sumo wrestling In Brazil it is rude to use the a-ok sign by touching your thumb and pointer finger together. and the list goes on...... OMG janatks Hilarious!!!!:lol::lol: I'm so glad you shared these @janatks hahaa

I don't see any problem with just asking them! It's your home, your personal space. Or if you like to be passive aggressive like me, you could just indirectly and "casually" drop in a conversation about what you've "seen on the news today" about someone getting "done" for uploading pictures of other people's property.... That might scare them to take them off! Hahaha.

To the rest of you ladies - thank you for helping me prove my point to my friend :biggrin: I still find it bizarre not having a house alarm in our apartment here, never mind not locking things - it was always a natural thing for my family to do when leaving the house or going to sleep!

No matter where I live I always lock my doors, even when I'm inside. It's the opportunists you've got to be watchful for!! Exactly.. This is my argument!! And even if there's security, there's no stopping another neighbour or their visitors having a sneak peak I can appreciate people feel more safe here perhaps, but come on! Suppose it's similar to the whole leaving the phone on the table at brunch or on an evening out, thinking it will still be there when you get back ha Did you read in the newspaper where that lady came home and some guy was asleep in her bed! Allegedly security had a copy of her key. She called the Police and they were there when she took the picture No didn't see that, will find the link!? Gosh, that would be one of my worst nightmares. How the heck would you react :\: Here you go http://www.emirates247.com/news/emirates/dubai-police-on-selfie-of-woman-with-thief-2015-05-27-1.592018 Thank you!
