You are of course right, DebK, it is offensive all over the world. Perhaps what I should have said was there is very little tolerance for it in the ME compared to other countries. I am surprised to read that the police in Canada contacted someone over a complaint of this nature, can't help but wonder where they have the time to deal with something so trivial. I am also from Canada and in Calgary, the police would probably tell you to get real if you actually thought they had the time or inclination to do anything about a gesture that did not involve a fender bender, accident, fight etc. Just my opinion DebK not a personal attack on you! : )

Hello ladies! It's been a long time......and I have been wanting to post my story here for over a year now. I actually did post something back in Nov/10 and removed it within a day after getting supreme s**t from my hubby for posting anything on a public forum. As yyzdoh mentioned below I am now well and truly out of Qatar for good and feel "safe" to share my story. There are only a few discrepancies to what was said below, but here goes. I was heading home to Al Khor from Doha on the coastal road when I noticed way up ahead a white vehicle was in the fast lane and not moving over for anyone who wanted to pass, so everyone went in the slow lane to pass him and carried on. When I got up to him, I flashed my lights as I always do and when he didn't move over, I too passed him in the slow lane. FTR he was doing 120 on the nose. About a minute later he came flying up behind me and tailgated for a short time and then mysteriously backed off. I thought he wanted to play a road game with me as they often do and was relieved when he was gone for good, or so I thought. This happened on a Monday. The following Wednesday my hubby calls asking if I have had any problems on the road to which I said no, but a complaint was lodged and his company was called (great right!) and we were to report to the police station the next day - Thursday. I honestly had no idea at the time what this was all about and never even mentioned the incident to my husband a few days earlier because it was a total non-event. So it turns out this guy (definitely a local in brand new BMW SUV with plastic still on seats) put a complaint against me and said I flipped him off. I did not, and am proud to say I stopped doing that many years ago. I didn't even look at the guy when I passed him. Anyway, the damage was done and I now had to answer for it. So he waited until Wednesday to lodge the complaint and I have to presume he knows the system and he presumed I would go to the police on Thursday (which I did) but here's the thing. Apparently, once you open a case with the police, you must stay in their custody until it is resolved and in my situation it was now late in the day on Thursday (many hours spent in the station) with little chance of seeing a judge before the weekend. This means I would have spent the weekend in jail for something I never did because this guy didn't like me passing him. I saw at least 4 other vehicles do the same thing in front of me and he never went after them! Lucky for me a co-worker of my husband stepped in and I was able to see a judge that night, 11 hours and a drive to and from Al Khor to Doha later, I was home with a stiff drink! So be careful out there, as marycatherine mentioned below this is no way to spend your time. I went from being p-oed to a little worried to down right scared and we had virtually no control over the entire thing. Oh, one more thing, no one believed I didn't do it! They all (including the judge) just wanted to assess how sorry I was giving the bird. I have often wondered if he is still out there trolling looking for another expat to teach a lesson to.......? If a complaint is put against you by a local you will be in the police station to answer for it which could be as simple as an apology (heard many cases like this when men are involved) to as extreme as a weekend in jail as I nearly found out or deportation which happens all the time. Melj, anyone can lodge a complaint against anyone in Qatar, but if you are thinking about lodging one against a Qatari I would think again especially if you don't have a man backing you up. It's your word against theirs and you will nearly always be on the loosing end of that battle. For me it helped to look at it like they have a huge power over expat's and will use without mercy if they felt insulted, especially by a foreign female. So don't insult them, it's not worth it! IMHO, the best thing to do is not go looking for trouble, and if it finds you apologize (regardless) and be humble. As hard as that might sound to do,it is way easier than ending up on the wrong end of a battle you won't win. And don't give anyone the bird, please! I don't know why but this is a HUGE insult all over the Middle East and a fast track to trouble. Good luck and all the best ladies, Heather

[u'>UPDATE[/u'> Just wanted to pass on this information... After calling nearly every insurance company here in Qatar I have learned that no one will give full coverage on "older" vehicles here. Some will not go over 4 years, while most others average about 6 years, with a few exceptions such as AXA who will only go up to 7 years. If you have had coverage with the same company from day one, they seem willing to let the full coverage carry on, but not for a new policy. There is no age limit for 3rd party coverage or registration as long as it passes inspection. I was also told that Qatari law states the insurance company must offer 3rd party, but not comprehensive. <em>edited by HEF on 12/11/2011</em>

Interesting. I literally called QIC this morning to confirm and was again told they do not offer comprehensive insurance on vehicles over 5 years..... I guess that is good news though for anyone wanting fully comprehensive cover! Thanks for correcting me!

There is a difference in the insurance one can get for vehicle less than 5 years, and one over 5 years. Just got off the phone with Qatar Insurance Company to be sure nothing has changed..... If your vehicle is less than 5 years old you can get fully comprehensive insurance which would presumably cover the cost to fix both vehicles (if you were at fault). With [u'>any[/u'> vehicle over 5 years, comprehensive insurance is not an option and the cover you get is called 3rd party. This would only cover the cost to fix the other person's vehicle (if you are at fault) and not yours. I also specifically asked if there is any limit on the age of the vehicle that they would cover under the 3rd party insurance and was told no limit. So to be clear, I asked if they would cover a 20 year old vehicle and the answer is yes, no plans to change that. As for the yearly vehicle registration, a minimum of 6 months valid insurance must be left on your policy in order to renew your registration which can only be done after the vehicle passes their inspection. As marycatherine says there are in fact loads of vehicles on the road well and truly over 10 years! Just as a point of interest, there were rumors of this potentially happening years ago in Dubai and in the end when it never came to be "they" said one reason was that it would instantly create a huge strain on taxi's and public transport which was about as sorely lacking there as it is here now. I don't know what the advantage would be to the government implementing a rule like that when so many businesses (and their Sponsors) would suffer and close with no older vehicles to use, fix and sell!;)

Hi RachelA, I was hoping someone had more info on this than I do.... No idea about the long term parking on the back side of the departures hall, but the parking at the new arrivals hall is by the hour no matter how long. Can't remember the exact rate, but I think 24 hours worked out to around qar120-qar150 so obviously not meant for long term. Shame given there are so many spots sitting empty. Wouldn't it be great if someone realized there could be some good revenue there even if it was temporary until this parking area was busier....... If you find a solution, please post! ;)

For what it's worth, I have found that it can be 50/50 when traveling to North America but having your boarding pass for the next flight can make all the difference in the world. Whenever possible, I check in online as soon as the option is available, I almost always change my seats and print the boarding pass. Each time I have been able to do this, my bags were checked all the way through! Happy trails....

Yes, Execlawyer, I loved that story too. When the dad said this was the first time in many days that his kids had played and forgotten about their pain, one can't help but feeling like a jerk for judging him and his kids..... Maybe you can help me with this one though: I am seeking to understand why the hot girl in Landmark C-4 yesterday morning around 10:30 mistook the bakery for the gym where she nearly skipped up the isle in her spandex workout clothes which included a tight, racer back top showing all kinds of skin and knee length tights? Appropriate anywhere in Qatar outside your home or a gym, NO! Especially during Ramadan...... duhhhhhhhhhhhhh

LOL! The joy of sweating.... this is why I ONLY wear black on the bottom and can now expand my color choices on top! Ok, IMHO, it did hurt! I was surprised because I don't mind needles at all. It did not hurt nearly as much as a needle in the gums but it was a pretty good pinch most times and I would say he did about 20 injections/side on me. I agree it is definitely worth it though and it's over before you know it. There is a numbing cream (called emela - sp? I think) that you could put on the area about an hour before hand and you would not feel anything. I did read somewhere online that it is not recommended though and I am sorry I can't remember why??? It is supposed to last 4-6 months, guess it depends on the person, how much Botox was used and how bad the sweating is. Again, IMHO about extra sweating as a result, I don't think that will be an issue for me as I unfortunately sweat a lot just about everywhere possible (hence the black). So I would guess that for me, how ever much my body wants to sweat, it does from where ever but I haven't noticed any more than "my normal" in other places. Honestly, for me it is such a difficult time to gauge this as I am pretty much "clammy" (at the very least) from head to toe within 10 seconds of stepping outside... I would guess that if a person had several areas done, there then may be an increase elsewhere, but that is just a guess. I do not think there would be any chance of becoming ill from not being able to cool down because of this procedure, but that might be a good question to ask a Doctor.

Yes, I agree the price is quite high and I also think it is worth it for the reason you mention. I would probably spend the same or more if we had someone of their level of expertise in Doha anyway! If you happen to know when the visiting acupuncturist is here, please give a shout out.

I did it and it's great! First time in years I can wear a colored top..... Dr Makki at Plasti Surgicentre was very good and used the proper techniques to figure out where the sweat glands are. They swab the area with iodine and when you start sweating it changes color, they mark that area and it gets injected with Botox. He used 50 units/side (think I actually need a bit more - industry standard is between 50-100 units/side depending how excessive the sweating is) and it cost QR3,000.00. I was in and out in less than a half hour. If this is a problem for you, I highly recommend it. I actually plan to do it every six months for the rest of my life!

Hi ladies, I wanted to give a shout out for Dr. Chet who is a visiting practitioner at the six senses (Sharq Village) until July 31. I saw him yesterday and immediately booked a second appointment before he leaves again. He was here earlier this year and will be visiting again in October. If you have aches & pains, stiffness or worse I would definitely give him a try, especially with such a lack of options here in Qatar. Check out his web site and read the recommendations. I can say that unlike most of the people who wrote a recommendation, I am not a professional athlete with an acute injury. I have had low back pain for over 3 years now - so I was skeptical if one or two treatments would give me lasting results. I believe it will given the incredible improvement I experienced in one 90 min session, and with the advice and stretches he has given me to continue with. I can also email him anytime. For me, he basically used a combination of methods that he has studied for years to apply pressure to specific points to release the tightness & tenderness so that the muscle could relax and stretch. I have never had this type of work done before but can say that my range of motion increased by 2-3 times during the appointment! Seriously! He did say that depending on the person and the problem, he would then decide which technique to use, which is great. I think it was amy77 who mentioned his visit on another thread, thank you amy77! I am sooooooo glad I booked the appointment! http://www.sixsenses.com/Holistic-Calendar/index.php?pcode=DOHPA http://drchetcollins.com/

Bit of an update: I filled out the online request for an appointment and they actually called me back! Off to an excellent start I thought. I was told they were completely booked, a file was opened for me and they would call when they had a cancellation. I was in a hurry at the time and didn't ask about booking in the future as I planned to call back when I had more time. Before I could, I got another call. Excellent, I thought. This Doctor asked me about my problem (actually lower back but I selected the "hip" option....) and as I explained things further he told me that because I have tingling & numbness in my thigh I need to see a neurologist, and they do not have any neurologists there at all which is likely why they don't deal with backs and necks. He did say that I could still come in to Aspetar for a consultation but would most likely be referred on to Hammad or some where else.

Well I read your post and my skin started to crawl...... YUCK! I was horrified to find a maid cleaning my bathroom with the spray wand only and no cleaner whatsoever.... It was explained to me that with the water on hot it would disinfect everything as it was splashed around using one's hands! OMG! I felt sick to my stomach at the thought of all the things in my home that were now crawling with God knows what germs. Anyway, after a serious lesson and several "sneak a peaks" on my part, the toilet was cleaned properly with the brush and then with spray cleaner + paper towel which was always discarded immediately, hands washed with soap and move on to the next task. I did save a few bucks on cleaners until I figured that out... LOL That maid is long gone now and I really couldn't be bothered to try and find & train yet another one.

I am trying to get an appointment for a consultation now. amy77, I think you may be right about no back or neck problems. On the online request for an appointment they have a drop down box with choices for the problem area, and the back and neck are not listed as options. I really don't know anything about them but could guess that since they specialize in sports medicine they may be wanting to only deal with sports related issues rather than one's derived from day to day life? Just a guess. I will happily report back with news when I have some.

lulubaker: thanks for the recommendation. I will check them out. ccdoha: do you remember how many cc's or mg's of Botox they used? Also, how did they determine where to make the injections? (ie cornstarch on the armpits and wait for the sweat to turn it purple identifying the sweat glands....) I want to be sure I get it done right this time. That is so great to hear it lasted so long for you the 2nd time! amy77: I personally didn't notice any extra sweating anywhere else, but as I mentioned I really didn't get the full & proper effects of the treatment.

Thanks RachelA! I just meant more than a few hours, but not months... probably is considered long term.... I think there is more long term parking available at the new arrival building, but not 100% sure. I heard it was 45QR/day which is less (assuming 4 days of parking) than a cab both ways and for me because I live in Al Khor! I was hoping someone out there may have current info specifically about the new arrivals terminal. :)

I just called Emirates Airlines here to find out how long it takes for them to arrange a UAE visit visa for Canadians and the rules have changed again! If you are a GCC resident and have more than 3 months left on your resident permit you can now get a visa on arrival for approximately 200QAR per person. They will not give the visa if there is less than 3 months left on the RP. :)

My mom (Canadian) was here at the beginning of the year and we had to have her visit visa extended which was surprisingly easy. We went to the Ministry office beside the airport and got in the long line with everyone else. Unfortunately, no ladies line! Once at the front the process took minutes and her visa was extended for 2 months rather than one. No idea why and I would not count on that happening again, but we paid the 100QAR, waited a minute for the sticker to print and they stuck it on her PP page with the original visa. You will definitely be able to get an extension once, but I would say its 50/50 if you end up with a 1mo extension or 2. Also, the HR people with your husbands employer should be able to help with this and may in fact even take your PP's and do it for you. I would definitely have hubby ask them about it. Also, providing your husband is not on any kind of probation period (assume not as you & your daughter are going him right away) you & daughters visa should be the responsibility of his employer and if a visa run to Bahrain was needed, they should pay. That also assumes hubby has family status with this position as opposed to single status with assistance for family members..... Good luck!

In fact I just placed another order last night. umhasoomiBLOG: if your box is with Aramex you might want to double check with them about a UK box. When I signed up with them a few years ago, the one time fee included 1US box and 1UK box for life! You might have one in the UK and not realize it? After all, it is just a number...... Generally though, I find most items a bit cheaper on Amazon.com compared to Amazon.co.uk......

Glad your refund came through... I have to say that over all I have found QA to be really good. Their fares are cheaper than say Emirates and the like and the customer service I have got from them has been fine. Mind you, I tend to call or visit the Al Khor branch because I live in Al Khor but I also think it is a lot less busy and the agents have more time..... Interesting point, we flew with QA direct to Greece in March and the flight home was awful. They switched the plane at the last moment and we had no personal movie screens and they cranked the heat up so high I was sweating just sitting there. (I think they do that on purpose to try to get people to sleep....). Anyway I complained 3-4 times about the heat and once about the lack of entertainment system and the head stewardess was the sweetest little Filipino gal who assured me my complaints would go to head office, and they did! Several weeks later we got an email from them apologizing and promising to do better. Anyway, I was blown away considering I had my doubts if the complaint I wrote would see anything besides the bottom of a garbage bin. That said, they still have a long way to go to be 5* in my world, but I will continue to fly with them whenever possible! :)

Good point indeed marycatherine. If the document you need to have notarized is meant to be used in Canada where the Notary is recognized and legit, that would be perfect providing you were lucky enough to actually find someone over here who just happens to be a Notary.... And if you do, get the family at home to pick up a 6/49 lotto ticket for ya! Good luck with the NP here, and or your travels next week! Please do let us know if the NP is Canadian! ;)

I tried to find the same a few years ago here and found out that at the time there was no such thing as a Notary Republic or Commissioner of Oaths in Qatar. I do not believe they are recognized by Shari Law. What I ended up doing at the time was taking said document to the British Embassy (as there is no Canadian Embassy here so we fall under their servicing....) to have my signature attested by the Consular of the Embassy. It did cost something like QAR150 per signature, but if you need it you need it! Suggest you contact the people who need your signature Notarized and verify that the British Consular attesting your signature will suffice. It should because it certainly carries a lot more weight! If so be sure to call the British Embassy before going there to verify the hours they accept documents for attesting (not their opening hours) and what you need to bring (passport, etc.) Note: depending how busy they are that day (I would go first thing) you may have to wait for it to get done, luckily City Center is only a few minutes away! Good luck.

When I had my cats fixed, the one absolutely hated the cone collar to the point I thought she was driving herself crazy and must have had a headache from the continuous bumping of it on everything.... I felt so sorry for her, and she was just small so I rigged up a body sock (literally from a sock) that completely covered the incision area so she could not get at it. I worked like a charm! She wasn't exactly thrilled with the body sock, but she did get used to it and soon became her normal little self. I did have to reinforce the area a bit with a thick bandage on the inside, and she soon left it alone knowing she could not get at it anyway. I originally planned to find one of those goofy pet costumes and only resorted to my own creation when I realized I could not get anything like that here. Very recently I saw small pet costumes at the Japanese dollar store above Homes R Us in Hyatt Plaza. I personally have not seen any others around but another consideration was a baby/small child body suit. It is hard to say without knowing the size of the dog and where the incision is located, but I'm sure you can find something. Alternatively, there has to be an animal loving sewer here in Qatar somewhere who would be willing to retro-fit something close......... Honestly, I don't know why someone hasn't made a business making and selling these, there is not a pet owner alive who would choose the cone (which is not cheap!) over an equally well functioning body suit of some kind. Even the vet who saw it said "what a good idea!" Good luck and I hope the doggy is feeling better soon!
