I get coloured fondants from cakebox.me. They are good quality and deliver to your door next day usually. Tavola do keep some colours of fondant in 1kg tubs but they are not always in stock. I make a lot of cakes and really wouldn't try to colour your own from white for something like a red bus - you would need a tonne of gel colour and the fondant would end up so sticky it would be a nightmare to use. Good luck!

Thanks so much Tattie - I will be coming from the Ranches. Great tip about printing off pics. Would ideally like a yellow tartan as my mother has a vague ancestral claim to MacLeod of MacLeod. Might be asking too much though ;-) x. edited by HesterPB on 19/01/2014

My rugby-mad brother is visiting from London at the moment and he wants to watch the England v All Blacks rugby union match live next Saturday. I have checked the OSN sports schedules and they seem to be showing every match but that one. Any England or All Black fans have any ideas as to how he could watch it from our home or whether there is anywhere near the Ranches showing it? TIA xx.

Not sure if you still need but if so, drop me a mail - wikkidcakes at gmail dot com. If you bring them around to me I can give them a spray for you :) Thanks wikkid, that is so kind of you but I actually have got someone flying out from the UK early next week to bring me some so I should be fine. Really appreciate the offer though. X.

Edible gold leaf from an Indian sweets shop, like Puranmal or Chappan Bog? Oooooh, that is a possibility. Forgive my ignorance as I know nothing about Indian sweets, but where would I find these shops?

Hi Polly, I am afraid that I don't have Friday night tickets to swop but DH and I would love to go on Saturday so if you want to sell yours, I would be happy to buy them from you. Could meet you on Saturday to get them (currently out of Dubai and back Friday night - hence why we didn't buy Friday night tickets and by the time I got around to it, Saturday had sold out - DH was not pleased with me!). If you want to sell, let me know and I will post my email address or mobile number. Many thanks! HesterPB

What they have told us existing Kings' parents is that Kings' College (ie the new one in Nad Al Sheba - to be built in between Repton and Dubai Modern High so heaven only knows what the traffic will be like) is to be open in Sept '13 and will go from FS1 to Yr8 and will then grow organically all the way through to final year. That was the plan last time I heard it. The Barsha South school will open a year later... in theory. edited by HesterPB on 07/03/2013

MaiTai, I do know that Automatic in Ibn Battuta mall deliver to us in the Ranches. It was a struggle to explain the address to them the first time, but I spoke to the manager and he took it down correctly. Now they have it listed under my mobile number so very easy ordering. Like you, I am a half and half and I prefer Automatic to most other Lebanese food. Tried Al Arrab at Le Marche when we moved here and just not as tasty or succulent. Might be worth speaking to Automatic at Ibn Battuta just to see. XX. edited by HesterPB on 06/03/2013

We sold our nice cars and bought the most un-stealable car in the world - silver Toyota Auris hatchback, which we leave on a trickle charge in the garage. To be honest, there is not much between doing that and hiring for the hols and if we were to do it again, I think I would hire as the Auris is tiny (particularly after being used to the huge cars we have here) and you have to get special insurance as you are no longer resident in the UK - there is a good broker in Cardiff who offers such insurance at decent prices. If you tot up all the costs (insurance, MOT, tax disc, servicing etc), it probably works out much of a muchness so I would look into hiring when you are back if I were you - less hassle IMHO.

We leave our family home in the UK empty. It is such a joy to go back to in summer and sometimes Christmas or when passing through to Europe. We still pay the council tax, bills etc but we drain down the water in early November to ensure no frozen pipes and that saves us a lot on heating oil (we are in the middle of the countryside). My old cleaning lady pops in once a month to hoover up the spiders etc and gets the house ready for us before we come home. Our gardener keeps on top of things for a nominal amount (and all the fruit and veg that he grows in our garden). Obviously we have upper security, with an alarm, motion detectors, more locks etc. We also have just started employing a security firm to be on call as key holder and to do a check on the house once a week. I can't remember how much they charged, but it seemed good value for peace of mind. I guess we are very lucky though as we live in a very small village, know all our neighbours who keep an eye on things and everyone knows everyone so any strangers or suspect behaviour would really stand out. We have insured it as a holiday home, which it obviously is for us now and that works out very reasonably too. Just so lovely going back to your own home in summer (if you can afford to do it) and I couldn't do the living out of suitcases thing - anything more than about three nights in someone else's house and I am always desperate to get back to my own space. :-)

Also Feline Friends have a great fostering programme for kittens or cats. Similarly, they have no shelter so all cats are fostered until they can be re-homed permanently. All the cats are vet checked etc. and help and advice can be provided if you need it. Look at they relevant section at www.felinefriendsdubai.com - under 'How can I help?' or they have a Facebook page which you will find if you search for 'Feline Friends Dubai'. Good luck and HTH!

Don't worry at all - there is lots of help here in Dubai. I can personally recommend Dr Susan Norton at Dubai Physiotherapy Clinic in Town Centre mall on the Jumeirah Beach Road. I don't live anywhere near, but I would definitely travel across town for her. She is Canadian, very experienced, kind, practical, sympathetic but does not patronise or down talk at all. She was recommended to me by Helen Williams of Lifeworks (on Al Wasl Road), who is an amazing therapist and really helped me at my lowest points. You do need a prescription but SSRIs are available here and the doctor will be able to talk to you about what is needed. Hester - would you recommend Dr Norton for someone who has lost their way? A bit of a life coach + support for anxiety/depression and advise ? Thanks, P Dr Norton is amazing, but she is a GP - a family medicine doctor. I think she would be exceptionally helpful at pointing you in the right direction and advising as to medication, but she is not a counsellor. I agree that LifeWorks is the best place to start for that. HTH! XX.

Ok ladies, I must admit that I am going through a rather uninspired patch at the moment! I am trying to be organised and thinking about what to buy our godchildren for Christmas. They all live in the UK (bar one in Australia) and the range in age from 4 to 13 - both girls and boys. They each get individually chosen birthday presents (either taken back to the UK over summer or posted well in advance), but as the post from here can be hit and miss, in recent years I have taken to just ordering them a book each from Amazon online for Christmas. Obviously as we have quite a few godchildren, it can't be too expensive (I usually spend approx GBP10-15 each) and it needs to be something I can buy online from here for delivery in the UK. Does anyone have any ideas that are more original/inspiring that Amazon books/DVDs/vouchers?? Many TIA! Am just having a complete block on this! XX.

This conversation is truly shocking. I understand the OP's frustration, but surely such matters should be dealt with in a civilised fashion. OP - in answer to your original post, your rights are that you can require her to comply with her contract. I do personally think that should be considered in the light of whether you really want someone in your home with your family who doesn't want to be there. You should talk with your maid and discuss the situation and your perspective with her like adults. At the end of the day, it is only money and surely your family's welfare is worth more? As for those ladies on here who advocate holding the maid's passport so that she can't leave, frankly I am shocked! Are you from the dark ages? Maids are employees, not chattels and ask yourself this, whatever the rights and wrongs and she may do this, she may do that about the situation, do you really want to be that type of person? The type of person who forces another human being to do something against her will? If you want to look in the mirror and see that sort of cruelty in yourself, go ahead, but think long and hard about it first. Someone much wiser than me once advocated doing unto others as you would have done unto you and I would suggest that is still sage advice.

Always been very happy with Hennessey LLC. We are in the Ranches and they look after a lot of pools here. A friend recommended them and we have always found them to be good service (particularly good after sandstorms at coming quickly and clearing all the leaves etc out of the pool) and good price compared to some of the other quotes we had.

My eldest DD had a birth defect and had three operations whilst still in utero at 30 weeks. I was given the steroid shots for her lungs and was incredibly glad that I had as she was born naturally at 34 weeks after my waters broke at 32 weeks. Although she was small, her lungs were sufficiently developed that she didn't need ventilation and only c-pap support (ie a little extra oxygen) for a couple of weeks. I certainly suffered no ill effects from the steroid injections and DD is now a great big bouncy 6.5 yr old with very robust health. You need to listen to your instincts and trust them about what to do, as you have to live with your decision. All I can say is that we suffered no adverse effects at all and in the end, I was very glad I did have the shots. Good luck to you and your bump!

I always use Nigella Lawson's buttermilk birthday cake recipe (from her 'How to be a Domestic Goddess' cookbook). Always turns out well (even when substituting milk and yoghurt mix for the buttermilk) and is a very easy, bung-everything-in sort of recipe.

Both my daughters were nearly 3 when we took the sides off the cot. I saw no need to rush and they had never attempted to climb out so was quite happy with them 'contained'. Eldest DD took about a year to work out she could get out of bed on her own and the younger DD worked it out on the first night! I think just rely on your judgement as, with this as for so many parenting choices, there is no right or wrong, just what is best for your child. As for sleeping bags, one of mine was out of hers at 18 months as she liked to sleep cooler so just put her to sleep in a vest with poppers underneath and the youngest was in sleeping bags until nearly 3. In the UK I used to buy from www.gro-store.co.uk, who do sleeping bags up to age 10! I am not sure if they deliver out here, but you could always ship & shop them as they are quite light. HTH!

I haven't done the Alex & James classes, but I have been to many salsa classes in many places and generally people wear all sorts. I used to wear cropped trousers, a t-shirt and flat shoes (they do need to be ones that you know will stay on) and that was fine. Some people do dance in heels, but if you are a beginner, it is much easier to start in flats and that is what most people wear to lessons. Actually, that may depend on the style of salsa you are learning: for Cuban-style, most girls wear flat for lessons and heels in clubs, but perhaps for LA they do the lessons in heels... Either way, really don't worry about it and just wear comfortable clothes. Have fun!:)

Your point is valid, but I am still struggling to understand why you think it is acceptable to call me misguided and naive when you have no idea who I am and what I do You expressed an opinion and Captain America and myself commented on it. That's part of the entire [i'>raison d'etre[/i'> of forums such as this. Who you are and what you do is pretty irrelevant, really. Your opinion does rather betray that you probably don't know much about the sociopolitics of this region; if you did, you would never claim that the UAE is some kind of Switzerland-style safe haven that has no enemies. You are now putting words in my mouth, Madge, but I will admit that perhaps I did over-simplify my original comments as I did think some sort of sense of perspective might be helpful to this discussion. Again you make an insulting judgement about me that is simply not necessary - we can agree to disagree. My family and I have lived in the UAE for 37 years and I think I know a little about the region and its politics but perhaps you know more. I shall consider your comments and advice carefully.

The website is www.ritmo-de-havana.com and that gives course and fee details. You have to sign up for a course - it isn't just class by class - and you have to pass the previous course to go on to the next one. It sounds quite regimented (and it is), but Del Piero is a really great teacher for beginners. I learnt with him, as did lots of people I know who dance salsa regularly. Have fun!

I shall put your insulting comments about being 'misguided' and 'foolish' down to your obvious fear at the moment. Rest assured that no Embassy would ever have to do any work on our part - we have our own safety mechanisms in place, but they are global and not related to the current climate here. As for keeping documents in order, I think that is a very sensible suggestion and something I have always done, particularly since I saw a thatched cottage in our village in England burn to the ground in under 20 minutes. We have a 'grab bag' in the safe containing all original documents and photocopies of everything scanned on the computer and backed up off site in Europe, but that is more for concern about technology breakdowns and fire. Out of genuine interest, can I ask what people are actually concerned about happening? Do you think there will be fighting on the streets of Dubai or bombs being dropped or what?

It sounds like everyone is beginning to scare themselves at bit! I have lived here through two Gulf Wars, even when the British Embassy advice was for wives and children to leave, my mother stayed on (as did we all) as this is our home. Apart from lots of soldiers and sailors in town, nothing really changed though technically the UAE was part of the 'war zone'. Things are looking rather hairy in the ME at the moment, and if the worst comes to the worst, it may be worth remembering that the UAE is the middle east equivalent of Switzerland - no one else really has any beef with it, so just being here should be relatively safe. That is our view anyhow. I think it is probably wise to keep monitoring the situation, but I certainly wouldn't get too worried or start scaring our children about things until it is absolutely necessary.

Welcome to Dubai! I had my youngest in Seashells for a year before moving her to FS1 at 'big school' and we both absolutely loved it - a really sweet little nursery. They do have a good FS1 programme there as I know people who kept their LOs there for it, but places at Seashells are like gold dust - do go and do the tour and speak to them though. Also, have you considered the new Dovecote Nursery in Jumeirah? It is affiliated to Repton and run by a fabulous and dear friend of mine, so whilst I have no experience of having a child there (both of mine are at school now), I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it as Mena Press is just the sweetest, most caring person imaginable and I know she will have the highest standards for the children and their care. I am not sure what the deal is about getting places at Repton from there or whether they do an FS1 year, but it might be worth looking into. Good luck!
