my parents came here in 1967... back when the whole place was a desert! They still talk of tales when they used to wet towels and lay this on the bed before sleeping on it to keep cool in the summer months! I was basically born and brought up here... so a good 33 years of my existence... went to school here in the 80s - 90s when there were few schools, all reasonably priced and no crazy wait lists! Most of the accommodation then was 'colony based'... and the major colonies were Satwa, Karama, Al Shaab (Deira) and Ghusais... I remember our rent for a large 2 bedroom apartment was 4000dhs for a YEAR!! hehehehe and my folks used to complain that our landlord was an extortionist! :) hehehehhe... ahhh the good old days!

we are moving out of our three bedroom apartment on shk zayed road just next to towers rotana hotel... it's 3 bedroom plus maids room... very spacious but has a very small balcony (as we're on the first floor... all other levels of the building have lovely big balconies)... we are currently only paying 95K but this will surely rise to 120-130K for a new tenant... the building has all other facilities like a big pool, party hall, gym, squash courts, etc. it's also very easy to access Oud Metha from there as there's a lovely back road that connects the two places (so you don't actually have to use the main szr)

U cud get some paneer (cottage cheese) tikkas... I have never seen marinated ones in a supermarket (I might be wrong), v usually order them from one of the indian restaurants uncooked. While placing the order, just tell them u want to barbecue it urself, so send them with skewers. If u have a separate grill, i think some paneer and veggies (potatoes in a jacket, zuchini, bell peppers, etc) shud do... As a vegetarian, they can't expect much at a barbecue! Maybe some vegggie sausages... again something I have never tried, maybe others have a better idea... *cross posted with Shivi... there u go, better options for u OP :)* edited by nams_new on 19/02/2014 Nams_new which restaurant do you order yours from? if they're used to you ordering it in that style I would rather call them up than have to explain the whole concept to someone new

TDB... I googled it and there seems to be loadddsss of recipes for veggie kebabs and homemade veggie burgers and grilled halloumi, grilled aubergines, etc... but honestly I can't be bothered to cook extra... would rather just buy something already premarinated and stick into oven or frill... we have more than one grill so could leave one aside strictly for the veggies... no unfortunately they don't eat fish either...

ladies... in a fix... having a family bbq this weekend and one of the families (invited by someone else) is vegetarian... and I have no idea where to start on the veg dishes for the bbq... we were just going to grill fish, pork and beef... but now with this family I have no idea what to serve them other than the salad accompaniments we had anyway! help... is there somewhere I can just buy pre-marinated veggie skewers? I'd hate to just serve them frozen veggie burgers :( and with all the other cooking that's being done I have zero time (or inclination) to cook veggie stuff as well

I recently did mine (for my small business) with this lovely lady called Shyrell... she has her own studio in the Downtown area... I quite like the way the pictures turned out... I quite liked her style and friendly approach... thankfully she's not pushy and is quite accommodating with her clients... if you want more details let me know and I'd be happy to pass on her contact...

I have had personal experience at Welcare Hospital (now called Mediclinic Welcare) and would recommend my doctor - Dr. Janaki Gopalan... she's the head of the OB/GYN dept and is very experienced... is quite strict and blunt but very very good at what she does! There are many doctors there who also come highly recommended such as Dr. Jennifer Kasirsky and Dr. Marcus Pane If your insurance covers Welcare it probably also covers City Hospital in Healthcare City (as it's under the same Mediclinic brand)... if so then also look at doctors like Dr. Elsa who is very pro-natural birth... only issue is that she can be a little difficult to get your first appointment (although subsequent appointments are much easier to come by!)

I agree... whenever we've taken a table at the safa one we always gather in a couple of our friends as well and make it day out for us all! more people on the stand 'watching out' better it is... especially if ur selling expensive stuff... someone actually tried to walk away with our Delsey suitcase (imagine the nerve) that we were displaying our stuff in!!

Leila, does he drink? if so you could make him a bouquet with miniature alcohol bottles! saw it on one of those DIY websites and made it for my hubby... he was floored! :) if he doesn't drink fill it with stuff that he loves... things like chocolates, some toiletries, a silk boxer even??!! :) have fun...

as long as he still has your security deposit it is best to leave the air amicable between you... facilitate the visits but be very specific about the viewing times... give him one weekday evening (between 7pm and 8pm) and one weekend morning (let's say between 10am and 11am on Saturdays)

well... as you rightly said the contract is between you and your maid and hence you need to speak to your maid directly about it... best to give her clear options - option 1 - stay and work with you and take her one month off after a year's service (that's all she's allowed to legally and as per her contract) option 2 - she can leave immediately but tell her that you will not think twice about placing a ban on her I think she is just acting silly on various counts: - calling you at work to discuss this instead of waiting till you got home - involving her aunt to engage in discussions with you she obviously knows how overbearing her aunt can be and which is probably why she's using her to corner you as she probably doesn't have the guts to confront you directly... if you have not already stamped her visa send her back immediately... if you have then you're looking at a loss of almost 4500dhs in visa processing charges if she leaves now! hoping she agrees to stay... and will work without a scowl!

lots of the small stores in karama sell knee length cycling tights in assorted colours. if you already have some sort of maternity swimwear you feel comfortable in just take this to the store with you and pair it up with a similar coloured tights... and viola... you have your own bespoke swimsuit! :) #sharingyourpainonthewobblythighs

There's one in DIFC, but for the life of me can't remember the name. Sorry I've heard of two in DIFC... one is Bespoke and the other is Ascots & Chapels... my DH got 5 shirts custom made for him at Ascots & Chapels and they've turned out lovely... and if I remember correctly cost him just 1000dhs... not sure about the quality/prices at the other place (Bespoke) but they were recently featured in the Friday magazine

you can just paint the wall itself with something call chalkboard paint... its a clear solution that converts any surface to chalkboard... available in ACE and also most teaching supply stores...

thanks all for the wonderful ideas... but my challenge is that a lot of the items you have mentioned I don't actually have in my cupboard! no knee high boots! no village belle outfit no orange sari no ghagra even!! yikes I know how can I be desi right??!! I just don't have any of these items that actually fit me anymore!! so am a bit stuck! friend of mine has offered to lend her chicken work white salwar so I might end up going as parineeti chopra from ishaqzaade... I have a black waistcoat at home and also a toy gun...

Hey horizon mum! you have sooo many great ideas yourself! and seem an expert in bollywood stuff. I don’t any of us will be able to top it off with such great suggestions coming from yourself! p.s. I liket he white towel and school uniform idea! awww thanks... I have the ideas... no doubt... it's just that I don't actually want to BUY any of the costumes or accessories... would much prefer borrowing something for the day... which is why I'm floating the idea... even for the school uniform I definitely don't have a box pleat skirt lying around in my wardrobe! :)

a lot of the furnished apartments and 3 star hotels offer their meeting rooms/party halls/ballrooms for similar parties... some ideas that pop into mind are as follows: London Suites Hotel at Al Wasl Sports Club Flora Grand Hotel at Al Rigga Savoy Suites behind Burjuman but the minute you have it in a hotel the per head banqueting charges are around AED 75/- per head... if you're okay with having it at a restaurant then you can look at options like Coco's on Shk Zayed Road Delhi Darbar in Karama Foodlands in Deira the list is definitely not exhaustive but just wanted to send across some suggestions... the park is also a lovely option... but you will not be allowed to have a bouncy castle (coz both public parks and community parks wont allow use of their electric connections)... so unless its a large event and you can warrant brining your own generator you'd have to settle for no bouncy castle

the images you receive from etsy are in high resolution pdf format and can be printed pretty much onto anything that accepts that format... so if your home printer accepts rice paper/edible icing paper and supports a 'pdf' file as input source then it will surely work... if not and your home printer only supports jpg formats then you can ask the etsy vendor to send you the file in high res jpg format... if you don't have an edible printer you can check with the bakeries here... I know for sure that places like Mr. Bakers has the printer that prints on edible paper

pity you were put off by the admissions experience at Horizon TruBlu... but having been a parent there for the past three years I can safely vouch for the school! :) it has a wonderful and nurturing learning environment... and hopefully this year a lot more spaces will be offered thanks to the school expansion plans... colours - like TruBlu said it's always best to have a Plan B unless of course you're okay with homeschooling for a bit...

It is hard for us to find a good maid and it is equally hard for many maids to find a good employer as well. We are leaving in the summer and will have to let ours go. Still many months till summer and already I am anxious for her. Hoping that she will find a new family that will appreciate her as much as we do. Hoping that she will get at least the same salary or more. Hoping the employer will let her eat what they eat or at least give her food allowance. Hoping the child or children and/or pet will like and even love her like ours do. All these are in my mind. She might be my employee and what happen to her in the future will not affect us in any way but I can't help feeling that if I know she will be alright, then I can leave Dubai in peace. She is in no way perfect but where it matters, she is. I am not advertising but I just want to say that good maids are out there just as good employers are out there for them too ;-) Does luck has anything to do with it? I honestly don't know. blimey... I'd be really interested in taking over your maid provided, of course, that I can match the salary and comfort you offer her... may I be cheeky and ask you to email me on horizonmum2 at gmail dot com to give me more details... the reason I ask is because our current wonderful house help is looking to leave back to Nepal as she's been in the middle east for fifteen years now and wants to go back and spend time with her grown up kids... she's scheduled to leave in june... so would be quite keen to hear from you... not sure if u need to check with your maid first but we live in an apartment on shk zayed road (close to DIFC metro station) and have two young children aged 7 and 2 and no pets...

why dont you try a different nationality ? I agree... why don't you try a different nationality? we have a wonderful nepali house help and many others in our apartment block have recently switched from philipinos to nepalis as the average salary demanded by the philipino maids in our area (shk zayed road) was going higher by the day! the minimum stipulated rate for nepali house help is 900/- dhs a month but if you agree to pay a decent amount more... around the lines of 1300/- dhs a month and pay all her other expenses such as medical, toiletries, etc. there are MANY who would happily join your family in a heartbeat. The only challenge with the majority of nepali maids that I have had the opportunity to interact with is that they are not highly fluent in English... but if you're lucky to find one that can at least understand basic instructions in English then it would be perfect for you (especially since you are looking for someone to take care of your pets and the house and don't have any children she would need to interact with in English)... we found our 'gem' simply from spreading the word around some nepali maids in the building... perhaps that will work for you as well... wishing you all the best in your hunt...

yikesss tomorrow?!! well that rules out the order online option... why not just make it at home? blue tshirt, blue tights and a white patch sewn onto the front? for the head bit you can probably just cut the shape out from card paper and hot glue it onto a hair band? try the regular costume stores like Party Centre, Mr. Bens Closet, the Craft Store (Barsha)... but be warned it wont be anything less than 250dhs!
