hi there... sorry to hijack the thread but just wanted to say that if this particular indian lady who has worked as a teaching assistant before would consider transferring her visa to maid visa then my friend who lives in Executive Towers may be interested in hiring her. It will be purely for childcare as the family does their own cooking and the apartment they live in is fully serviced. we got ours done... the costs were as follows: - husband's will AED 2000 - my will (which is a mirror will of my husband's) AED 2000 - guardianship document AED 1500 - power of attorney AED 1000 - arabisation of all documents AED 1500 so worked out to be AED 8000 in total... I chose to make a will of my own because I have property here in my name... but it wasn't mandatory

we set up one with Zurich (through Nexus brokers)... it's an education plan I think... they're all the same concept but just marketed under different names (pension, health, education, etc.) we're happy so far and one of my relatives (who had invested in the very same thing 10 years ago) recently cashed his for his son's university fees... and he made a substantial profit... the one we've taken is not very 'high risk' so obviously the rewards aren't that high as well... but we wanted something relatively simple to manage if u want the name of the advisor we used just ping back on here

Hi Anouja... For the party in the Marina - I think you're guests will have no problems reaching it assuming the party is on Friday... as the cycle route that day is aimed more at the roads towards Hatta (DWTC - Airport Road - Khawaneej Road - Emirates Road - Al Hubab Road - Hatta) With regards to the party organizer - I am one myself but unfortunately am already booked out this Friday and Saturday... but the easiest thing for you to do for this would be as follows: - go to any of the supermarkets or discount stores and buy some packs of funky coloured nail polish - ask one of your friends or visiting mums to help run the station for you... all you need is one adult or older child to be able to put the nail polish on the other children! - if you buy a couple of tubes of child friendly lip gloss or tattoos you can add these to that station and the kids will have a blast! - for the balloons, the balloon arches are an expensive thing... so keep that out... instead just get 30 to 40 helium balloons from the closest party store and get them to the venue urself... at a time around 10-15 of them will comfortably fit in your car... you can even get them the day before and store them in a really cold room and they should hold till the next day afternoon! Horizon School is open... although they have said that if parents are unable to pick up their child by regular school closing time of 1:20pm (on Thursdays) then they should refrain from sending them to school... children using the school bus need not worry as they will not be affected and will run on schedule as usual.

Hmmm... for my DH's 30th we threw him a jungle/African themed party at home with all the nearest and dearest friends & family... he was floored!! We chose jungle/Africa coz of he's quite a 'wild child'! :) it's one of those wonderful events that expatwoman forum actually helped me out a great deal... I managed to borrow a lovely artpiece of the BIG FIVE animals to be used as a backdrop! I swear the women on this forum are such darlings! anyway... for your DH... lemme see now... a full day out with the family to experience something you've not done before would have been lovely but my only concern is that ur very close to ur due date and that means u would need to be in reasonable proximity of ur hospital... for gift ideas - check notonthehighstreet.com I found a lovely scratch map there for my DH who loves travelling... they seem to have some unique gifts...

Dear HorizonMum2, Hi, I am Italian, from Milan. First of all, seen the season, April, I would concentrate in the center and south of Italy. All the north and Milan included can Be very wet and rainy, maybe not but better avoid. In my opinion, better to see the main cities of center Italy, Rome above all, Florence, Pisa, then south to Sorrento, Capri, Pompei. The only north option I would consider is Venice. I think Milan is worth only if you have already seen the rest and if your main interest is shopping (at crazy prices). As for restaurants, please as Somebody else told you, please, try to avoid touristic restaurants. The cities centers also have "normal" restaurants with our real great food, not the touristic one, bolognese or whatever! Not many know that the south of Italy is amazing, Puglia, Sicily (full of culture, history, archeology) Sardinia (isle) above all. Looking forward to your email... one of the challenges I have is to find somewhere appropriate to stay... travelling with us are our parents and also our children... so we're a group of 5 adults and 2 children... ideally I'd like to find a 2 bedroom apartment or so to stay in each of those cities... or a cheap B&B

Why dont you look at a cruise, there are some decent deals on at the moment. DH and I have just done one that started in Rome, finished in Venice, did Pompeii, Sorrento and then we did a leg through the Greek Isle. Whilst you only have one day in port you can organise your own tours, you only have to unpack once and you wake up in a new city each day. If not, Venice is a must, its beautiful and Pompeii is amazing. thanks for the cruise idea LittleOne... unfortunately my DH's parents are a bit fussy and wouldn't be able to deal with sleeping onboard a ship... they will come up with all sorts of drama related to sea sickness, etc... better to be on land...

Pompei is amazing we spent two very full days there, it's just so big. If you want to see something similar try Herculaneum, just as interesting but much more manageable. is there enough to do for the children at Pompeii? I'm concerned on how to keep two young kids entertained during our trip

one of the oldest and most experienced cardiologists in Dubai is Dr. A BinBrek... he joined the Cardiology team at Rashid Hospital from 1976 and was soon made Head of Department until he recently moved to start his own practice. Check out the clinic page.. http://binbrekmed.com/aboutus.asp He's one of those typical 'wise old men' and has a lovely sense of humour! :) My mum who's a nurse at Rashid for the past 35years has worked very closely with him and strongly recommends him for all cardiac related issues within our family and friend circle... unfortunately his clinic is on Bank Street (beside BurJuman mall) and not in the areas you would have preferred...

Cass, London Business School and Manchester Business School have excellent reputations I have worked with them all and been to many of their Alumni evenings. The staff are wonderful and the students all seem very happy :-) okay cool... thanks... will pass that info onto my brother

why not make your own popcorn box themed to the event you're having! Party Centre have them but they aren't too big so if you're looking for tiny individual ones pick it up from Party Centre... else get on etsy.com and search for popcorn box and viola you will get a whole range of printables that you just print on card stock paper and fold/glue at the creases. well I went for a portrait couture shoot today with some really glam photos... they took one of me in a real HOT dress lying on my tummy... with the hair and make-up they totally TRANSFORMED me!!! hehehe I'm still on a high from the shoot! I'm hoping to blow that pic up on a canvas and give it to him! to hopefully remind him that I can actually look sexy if I take the effort! Where did you get that done and for how much? Would love to do something like that. went to this studio in Downtown called ENCHANTE... they are offering a promo on this new concept of portrait couture (google the words 'portrait couture' to get an idea of the type of photography)... well as part of the promo they are offering the session free till 31st jan (so basically the make up and the photographer's time is free) and then they would give you 50% off prints ordered... just from the raw images I saw today I'm really impressed and have a feeling i'll be buying a lot in the end and burning a very big hole in my wallet!

Why not look at some of the afternoon teas? I've been to a few at the Park Hyatt by the creek which was lovely. You can have a private area. Some hotels now offer Baby Shower packages for tea and sandwiches. I've been to one at the Park Hyatt as well... really lovely... not sure if the decorations were organized by them or not but it all just felt lovely and all fitted in! and the mini sandwiches and truffles were to die for!!

were you getting them printed? best thing to do is go to PARTY CENTRE in Garhoud... they stock balloons from AMSCAN and balloon plus helium plus treatment (to last longer) will only cost you AED5 - AED 6 per balloon... of course printed and foil balloons are more costly...

unfortunately most of those older style villas that you are referring to (Arenco and Asteco types) have all shot up in rent and those that were around the 120 mark are easily touching 180 now! all the best... we are on waiting list at this compound called The Terraces... and they were initially for 130... but I've been told that from april it will be 160 or 170...

if ur willing to make the trek to karama, there is a DaytoDay discount store right opposite Families Supermarket that stocks this... around 5-7dhs per set... they definitely had lots of them when I went a couple of days ago... they only accept cash payments though...

lots of people have left because they increased the rents of the springs villas to extortionate amounts... villas that were previously 125K-130K are now being advertised at 180K-190K!! I know ten families who have moved out of Springs and into MotorCity!!

I am stuck with a bottle of EDP chanel number 5 tried Dubbizle was offered 50 dhs - its 645 dhs... bought it for my Mum for xmas and brought her up in a huge rash ;-( oh no! hope your mum's rash has cleared up! what's the last you would be willing to part with it for? I'd be happy to buy it if it wouldn't break the bank (hehehe my DH would die reading this considering my side of the dresser is bursting at the seams with bottles of perfume amongst other cosmetics!)

Hi Untouchable... would be happy to order them from you... one of my suppliers has recently ventured into this line of business... they are actually wholesalers of essential oils to the larger perfume manufacturers... and this is something they're thinking of trying out... at the moment they are exploring this through my event company... although they have a fully functional freezone trading license for the more wholesale B2B deals... maybe we can meet and I can show you some samples...

True ... But honestly, what man (other than western expats) does wear his seatbelt here? I would think many do... as the cops are running helter skelter fining people! my mum got fined once for not having worn her belt when she was just moving her car from one parking spot to the next on the opposite lane... the copper was waiting at the junction/blindspot next to Lamcy Plaza! <em>edited by HorizonMum2 on 22/01/2014</em>

instead of Baby Vicks... try this crème from Mustela called Soothing Comfort Balm... it's much milder than vicks but works surprisingly well (at least for my kids!) and can be easily applied on the nose, chest, forehead without any burning sensation... additionally put some regular vicks on the soles of your baby's feet and then put socks over it... I have no idea what the scientific logic is behind this but these are one of those grandma's remedies that seems to work wonders!
