Hi... in a similar situation as you... considering full leg laser after having done one session of upper lip/chin laser... I had the treatment done at Cooper Dermatology... my skin is medium fair with dark, thick hair growth and a substantial number of ingrown hair due to countless years of waxing, shaving and threading For my upper lip/chin the technician used a combination of gentle ND Yag painless laser and the more regular laser that smells like the hair's being burnt (that stung a bit)... I'm due for my second session later this week and the hair seems off for now... My only worry has been the price... how much are they offering the treatment at Intl Aesthetics Medical Centre? At Cooper, six sessions of upper lip/chin has set me back 2500!

Basic 1200? edited by Eleanorah on 05/01/2014 yes basic 1200 and everything else we provide is an add-on to that... the only thing she ever pays for is mobile to mobile calls... she basically uses our landline for all local landline calls to her sister/friends... and skypes with her family back home using our laptop/account a couple of times a month... when we hired her, as per the nepali government, the basic pay was only 800... but we paid her 1000 the first year, then increased it to 1100 and now in her third year her salary is 1200... we plan to increase it again by 100 next year...

I think the current thinking, especially in Dubai, is that westerners are better employers - they pay higher salaries, expect less, are less abusive etc, and give more time off. I agree... which is probably why most maids, especially Filipinos and Sri Lankans, prefer working with western expats... in our case, for example, my nepali maid wouldn't be able to adjust in that environment as she cannot read, write or speak English! so I guess she's quite content working with a family that understands her! I personally hope she never leaves us as she;s quite a darling!

I think there is a BIG difference between what they ASK and what they actually GET... pretty much like the rental market in Dubai! :)

it's also subject to nationality... most governments have set a minimum wage for maids so, for an indian maid, for example, the minimum wage is 1400... and most of them make anything between that amount to around 2000 (if they are live-in)... also the job description, amount of work involved, etc all play a part in deciding the final amount... I, for instance, have a nepali maid and we pay her 1200 per month but she is live in and we pay for all her needs (all medical/health, food, clothing, toiletries)... everything except her phone calls... she also gets one day off (Fridays)... we also give her a little extra when she celebrates a religious festival, her birthday and even on our kids birthdays and also on new years day.

w live on shk zayed rd... next to towers rotana and our apartments are AED 120K for a large 3 bedroom with maids... it also comes with a play area, squash court, gym and pool... plus we have a community park (satwa park) just across the road...

we're considering heading to Kenya this year for a safari with the kids! but if this is your first year here look at places that the budget airlines like FlyDubai and Air Arabia fly to... like Maldives, Sri Lanka, Nepal, India, Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, etc.

for the Groomsmen shirts try this store called EXPRESS... I've been to their branches in Dubai Mall and Mirdiff City Centre... they seemed to have an entire range of funky coloured shirts from teal to hot pinks and reds!!

This shop in Dragon Mart called CANOE Fzco usually stocks party items (but mostly balloons, streamers, glowsticks, children's costumes, etc.)... their shop number is HBM06-07 The toy shops in Dragon Mart will have a lot of the inflatables you're looking for... but you are also likely to find these in any of the small grocery shops along Beach Road. They usually have shark inflatables, beach balls, large inflatable sun beds, etc. and you can haggle on the price. If you're looking for paper lanterns, there's another store in Dragon Mart that sell them for AED 5/- each... this shop is called ROSSO and is in EBL05-06... when I last went the colours they had on offer were yellow, white, mauve, pink, red, orange, blue, green, brown and black Daiso pretty much always has a stock of the flower garlands... they would cost you AED 7-AED 9 each... they also tend to have some amount of beach toys like buckets, shovels, etc. For the grass skirts, etc your best bet would be Party Centre but be warned that they are frightfully expensive... you should look up online to see if they have any sites on DIY grass skirts... then you could just buy supplies and make your own Also ask around on here if people have stuff they could lend you for the party... I have a couple of garlands, for example!

Cally... congratulations!! Also, give this place called Mr. Copy a try... they have various branches across the city and are quite cost effective... their minimum print quantity for card stock paper is 20 A4 sized sheets and it costs around 4dhs per sheet depending on the paper quality... I think price -wise they would be slightly cheaper than DESCO and you can also try asking for a discount! :)

ideally, you should have the birthday in a community park close to your home... these are often the quieter ones that are smaller and hence easier to keep track of the children running around... safa 2 tends to be quite busy on weekends so your party might clash with a couple of other birthdays so may just end up being total mayhem! please note that community parks will not allow the use of electricity so the bouncy castle is definitely OUT of scope... edited by HorizonMum2 on 29/12/2013

cant help you on the keratin bit or recommend any straightening treatments... but perhaps it's worth taking a step back and just reducing the amount of products you use on your hair... for hair loss (provided its not related to any hormonal issues) most dermatologists will recommend use of Anagen as a shampoo (around 69/- dhs in most pharmacies) and the Anagen ampules (around 250/-dhs) to be used in combination for a period of two to three months... I had a certain amount of hair loss a couple of years ago and switched to this shampoo (it's very light and suitable for daily washing) and really noticed the difference... I don't use the ampules though but if you had severe hair loss that particular treatment is meant to stimulate hair follicles... good head massages (wet or dry) can also help stimulate circulation and improve the general health of your scalp and hair

we went last night and it was indeed lovely... especially the lovely snow ball fight area and the sudden bursts of snow into the air! :) my kids were thrilled to say the least! [u'>[b'>some words of advice:[/b'>[/u'> - take a taxi (the traffic to get into the place was crazy at 4:30pm!) - some rides have REALLY long queues (especially the bungee jump one!) so best thing would be to have one parent standing in queue while the other takes the kids around and bring back the child to the queue just in time for the ride or else ur going to have some pretty irate children! for the bunjee jump ride we queued for 1hr and 10 minutes! - they accept both cards and cash for the tokens... although entrance is free everything else you have to pay for... rides and activities are 20-25dhs each... lovely start to the festive season... be sure you go fast as the market ends this friday

for adult ones you can get these from ACE RENTALS - white plastic armchairs are AED 9/- each - white plastic chairs (without arms) are AED 7/- each - white cosmoplast tables (5ft) are AED 30/- each... they also have a foldable version for AED 40/- each If you have a four wheel drive you can stack these in your boot and can collect directly from ACE branch in Festival City... else if you want them to deliver then there is an additional charge of AED 100/- for the children's ones I have these with me and can rent them out to you for AED 350/- I have a variety of colours - blue, red, green (mostly primary colours)

Hello all! One more question. Can someone tell me what happens after Grade 6? I.e what is the process for getting your child into a secondary school of your choice? I'm assuming you have to apply very early and then they get assessed at the school? Does Horizon help at all with the placement? Do Horizon children have some sort of 'quota' in Dubai College? Horizonmum, you mentioned that all kids are now automatically offered a space in secondary school in Star? Was this a circular that you received? Thank you all in advance. with regards to what happens in Yr 6... is that some of the senior schools (like DC, JC, DESC) arrange school visits and discuss options with the students... and then they have an assessment test and application process to get into them... the problem is that the highly sought after schools like DC is one of the last to announce their placements and hence many children have multiple applications in place as a backup... Horizon students do not have any 'quota' at DC... and entry is by assessment and application review only! they do now get automatic entry into Yr 7 at Star International... a circular was issued to all current Horizon parents...

I was really happy about Dubai winning the Expo until just now - i just spoke to a guy on my way to work who lives in a labour camp in Al Quoz. His landlord came in this morning and said room rent has gone up (as of next month) from AED2,100 per month to AED 3,000. Crazy! whether we are labourers or white collar workers - we will all need to relocate based on the initial rush of rents... so he might need to consider moving to sharjah and I might need to move out to Remraam or something further! hopefully once rents stabilize we will be able to move back to where we initially were... all a matter of time... just bear with the country and it's crazy landlords for a year or two...

Not wanting to rain on the parade, but what do you think will happen the day after Expo? Dubai will be working hard on preparations for the Olympics!:-) Seriously, if this city can recover from the terrible blows it took in 2008/9, I think it can overcome aalmost ny adversity. Back then, no one could have predicted the Arab Spring and the benefits it brought Dubai. So we can't predict what will happen but things are better here than in many parts of the world. i'll buy front row tickets for that version of the Olympics!!! :) from their plans it looks like the actual expo site will eventually become a university campus! so that's one issue already solved for 2021!

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how many people actually know (without googling!) what the World Expo is, how often it is on and who is hosting the next one? I dare say, for most it does just mean an extra day off work!! in all fairness, not many... but that's what Dubai is best at doing - MARKETING... now that this baby is in our hands, they will ensure that people all around the world know what this means and how exciting it will be!! around twenty years ago not many people knew what DUBAI was all about... they'd only heard of Kuwait and Iraq (thanks to the Gulf War)... but just look at how Shk Mo changed that!!! you just watch how they ensure that this is even more talked about than the summer Olympics! :)

this is definitely a thread to think about... to me I think this announcement just offers HOPE... hope for more opportunities (job-wise), hope for a better standard of living, hope more improvements to society... Dubai has always striven to be the best at anything it has undertaken whether it's a horse race or building towers... so maybe they will indeed take the Expo to a completely new level making it something that people all over the world will talk about and remember... and with regards to this proposed 'bubble'... well we'll just have to deal with it when it comes... just like we dealt with the last bubble... for those who can sustain themselves here in the short run with the inflated rents and not so competitive salaries will stay on... those who can't will move on to better opportunities elsewhere... life will go on... I own property here... and fall into the bracket of those who took out a mortgage at the peak of the property boom... and since that place is too small for our family I am also separately renting... so I think I can understand both sides of the spectrum... yes, I struggled to pay my EMIs over the last few years but that's a risk I'd take with my property even back home... yes my rents will probably skyrocket where I'm currently staying if they remove the rera caps... but that probably means i'll have to move to someplace cheaper, smaller and further away from the city... personally I don't think that the property prices will stay inflated for long... with this announcement a lot of residential projects which were previously on hold will be resuscitated and that means the property supply will in time overshoot the demand and thereby stabilizing the rents... many businesses here have been holding off on their expansion plans/new offices in anticipation of reviving this, if and when the expo was announced... coz to them it basically meant more projects will be initiated and hence they will naturally need more resources, talented staff and bigger capex budgets to operate on... the inflation will go crazy for a couple of years but after that things will stabilize just like it has before... just a matter of sustaining oneself until then... sorry if I appear biased or too strong in my opinion... but having lived in Dubai my whole life (although I'm not emirati) this is the only home I know and I can't stop beaming with pride at how much this place has achieved in such a short span of time... agreed that they are not as organized as many of the developed countries... but they'll get there and will, hopefully by 2020, do in five decades what other nations have taken centuries to build... :) I just hope I'm here to see all that unfold :)
