We recently left Dubai and will really miss Dr Loubser. He has really been excellent. When we knew we needed a regular check-up for DS now 18 months we would schedule in advance. For this "sudden" appointments required if you call at 8am we often were able to get in that day. You just can't be picky about the timing. He talks to you like an Expat in that he explains about why their do their vaccinations and on what schedule also about your child's health and living as an Expat. He's great with the babies/toddlers. The nurses at Infinity are also really excellent. I have called a few times and just spoke to the nurse about concerns. If they are busy just leave a message and they call you back. Another excellent service from Infinity.

We have some that are a harness style that are great for our 18 month DS. He likes to be able to walk with his hands/arms free rather than always holding my hand.

We are looking at getting a more portable stroller for our DS as we are expecting to move back to the UK soon so have started doing some research. Love our Bugaboo but it isn't going to be realistic to be taking on the bus. I've been looking at the MacLaren strollers. However they say they only hold up to 15kgs. Our DS is only 16 months but is already 14kg. A very tall DS and has always been off the charts for his height and weight. He has only been walking for 3 months so isn't a really confident walker yet. Going to the mall and longer walks he needs a stroller. Any suggestions on other fold up strollers for toddlers that can be folded to take on the bus etc? Considered the Bugaboo Bee but don't think it is really that portable for public transportation. TIA.

We are looking to start investing in either Duplo Lego or Playmobil for our DS for Christmas. He is currently 16 months. However we aren't sure which would be more interesting or longer lasting. Duplo Lego I understand is really for 1 1/2-5 years. For the Mummy's who have older children what has been your experience? Which has your child found more interesting and which have they played with for longer? Is their much difference between the 2? TIA.

Happy Thanksgiving all! I wanted to make a pumpkin pie but couldn't find any at the Umm Sequim Spinnys. I guess all of the other Canadians beat me to it. Did you try Safestway?

The children's meal for DS was FAB on Emirates. I think it was better than the adult meal! Although he couldn't have some of the snacks that he offered as he was only 1. Granted he did have his own seat so I was able to order him a child's meal. I had asked about an infant meal and was told....heehee he could only have a childs meal as he had a child seat!! But in the end I'm glad. Try transitioning her to more whole foods and see how you go. How many teeth does she have? Even if only a couple she should be able to have more whole foods as their gums are pretty hard.

Happy Thanksgiving fellow Canadians! We did our thanksgiving dinner on Friday as it was just easier with our schedules. And Yes, Simpleabc it is on Monday but it is a long weekend in Canada. Do you ONLY celebrate certain holidays ONLY on the day?

I'm a Vancouverite!! Been here 3 years now. London, UK for 3 years before Dubai. I LOVE that Timmy's is finally here. My DH (British) has been educating his office on what Tim Bits are :) He was so shocked when I went to pick him up from work a few weeks ago and there sitting on the passenger seat was a Timmy Tim Bit box. We can't do a trip up to Whistler in the summer without a stop by Timmy's for a road trip snack, LoL. Can't wait for Thanksgiving coming up.

We just got DS first shoes from Pediped in Dubai Mall. They also have a stall in the Springs Town Centre. They have very soft soles but with a little support and good padding. I couldn't find Pediped in BumbleBee in Dubai Mall for the poster below. They did have quite a few of the Robeez. DS had those for the first while but now a bit more of a steadier walker we have moved to something with a soft but more of a sole than the Robeez. We went to Clarks but DS although only 14 months has size 6.5 feet and many of the first baby shoes are too small for him. We also found that Clarks only had shoes like trainers for his size. I thought they would be too hot for Dubai now. Pediped had more sandal type shoes but to cover his toes to be a bit cooler.

yeah, 1st birthdays are for the pictures and parents. Don't have many... even any - kids. Don't worry about a superfandango venue with balloon shapes, clowns, jugglers, petting zoo and all the rest - plenty of time to take out a loan for that in years to come! Another one for keep it simple. So agree on don't worry about a super fandango venue! It is just another play date with a cake and a few nibbles for the adults. Don't go all out and stress yourself. We all have the for the future years to come!

I can't believe all the negative "assumptions" from people who haven't even been. And yes, I have been in Dubai for 3 years so I know what to expect. Ohh, it's going to be bad...ooh they aren't going to get the order right, oooh can't wait to hear about the horrendous service. Well you are all WRONG. Well I've been. And although the timbit selection wasn't as big as I'd like I had EXCELLENT SERVICE and the timbits were very good and so was the blueberry fritter. There was a Canadian girl behind the counter helping out and watching. The staff were so enthusiastic it was so nice to see. Box of 10 timbits was 9 AED. Again, they were so yummy. I am going back!!!! Plus they have chill. I couldn't get that a few weeks ago in Vancouver and was disappointed. The only downside, the street parking.

shelly how did your flights go? We have flown before(as you know) but DH was with us on the way out. Funny enough both flights with him were day flights but my 2 flights going back to Dubai are overnight by ourselves. Do you have anymore tips from your flights? My DH too is such a wiggler and hates to sit still! Ahhhhh. I'm hoping the overnight flights will help!!

We have a medium sized fan on a timer which goes on for 30 min every 4 hours or so. So no A/C left on, just the fan. It seems to do the trick on keeping air circulating. We use it turning the rest of the time at night as well in the summer with no a/c on in the bedroom. The a/c is too noisy and also is either on or off. What is it with the A/C in Dubai??? You would think in the Middle East they would have better A/C units!! Builders must be in cahoots with DEWA to install these **** systems.

Can you have bbq's on balcony's? In Dubai you cannot have them at least no gas ones. Also they often cause smoke and set of fire alarms. Is this just a Dubai thing then? We too are potentially looking at a move to Doha. Are there lots of apartments/villa's available or it is a see one and grab it quick type of market?

Its not raining anymore its lovely and sunny down in the south today. Even when it was raining last week it was only showers. We managed to do Thorpe Park, fishing, a trip to London and my kids went to summer camp for 3 days last week without being affected by the rain. Have a good trip. Good to hear. I am hoping I can bring some of the good weather with me!

I regularly bf and pumped for my DS. However at about 9 months (he is almost 1 year) I just couldn't pump anymore. I don't think it was the pump it was just nature. I was lucky enough that I was able to from the start freeze some milk so had a good stock in a small deep freezer. DS then went onto a combination of formula and bf. I was able to bf when at home before his naps and at bedtime. He had bm in his morning cereal. However when we were out it wasn't possible to bf unless I could find a room somewhere as he just wouldn't let me us the feeding cover. Could it be just nature taking its course? Have to say I had a wee cry this morning as I think even our bf times at nap and bedtime are over. He only feeds for about 3 minutes then has some formula I just don't think there is any milk left in me. But I've made it to a year and feel very very lucky as so many friends were not able to bf. Is there a reason you don't want to use formula? I felt the same at the time but again I have been lucky that DS will switch between formula and bm with no problem. Hope you are able to continue and some of the recommendations below help.

After discussions with DH it seems it might be a "translation" thing. He is British and my recipe is Canadian. It seems that perhaps I'm looking for what Canadians/Americans call shortening. White, quite soft, sometimes has the brand name of crisco, used in baking. Crisco is available at Spinneys and Safest Way for sure. It's nearby the oils in Spinneys and by the baking goods at SW. I think I've seen it at Choitrams, too. Thank you ladies :)

My 10 month old and I still go. We sit on the playmat and bring some toys. The next group up is at a play centre and my DS is probably only just ready for it as he's only just started crawling. A few weeks ago I'd say he wasn't ready for it. But we have some friends with slightly younger babies so we still go. So I'd say definately babies over 6 months go. Come along and give it a try! We usually go to the Monday one at Dubai Mall. edited by Hunts in Dubai on 01/06/2011

My DS had something similar and it turned out to be cradle cap. I was recommended on his head/hair to use a clear baby shampoo like Johnson's & Johnson's not a creamy shampoo. It helped clear it up quite a bit. Do you breast feed? If so it could be a little milk rash when baby turns their had. My DS had a little rash from that as well. Let us know how you get on.
